"BELOVED is the first book in the obsessive. secretive, paranormal romance of Kara Heart and James Dray. An invigorating, satisfying series, that will leave you weak in the knees and begging for more."
Bella Johnson, a Canadian Author with a reputation for out of the box characters and true to life plot lines. Predominately writing in the paranormal genre, she has been known to venture back to the human-realm for some good ol' romance. A writer since a young girl, she is often caught quoting "If I do not write, I do not get to sleep."
I never review books, in part because I have incredibly low standards—or, at least, a very high tolerance for bad writing in service of a decent story. I can fill in blanks and change things up in my mind; if it’s diverting (provided I’m only in the mood for diversion) I’m all good.
Y’all no. This book has numerous good reviews and it seemed to be exactly what I was looking for: easy/trashy summer reading. I went into this expecting it to be not great but super fun. It was like $2.99 on iBooks. And just so you understand how very low my expectations were, the price definitely raised red flags and I did not care. If anything, the price seemed to support my end goal.
90% of this book is someone saying “Kara” (protagonist’s name). Since there is approximately zero exposition, this functions as the literary equivalent of “I am Groot,” except the context is so poorly fleshed out and the characters so utterly devoid of personality that, although the characters seem to understand this rudimentary language, you, the reader, probably will not.
The remaining 10% of this book is split between a total lack of subject-verb agreement, severe (and remarkably consistent) confusion regarding the conjugation of “to lie,” and repeated their/they’re offenses. It reads like fan fic written by someone in their 4th language.
The story may be good. I’m not sure because I haven’t figured out what it is. There are demons (ok) and things called hunters (ok) and, at least halfway through, none of this is explained. The protagonist—our dear Kara—has a name, and not much else besides a wildly erratic, personality. One minute she is awkwardly describing her own teenage longing for a person called James, and then with no transition she is storming off and slamming doors, usually after tripping over something. She’s a toddler who aspires to one day be a Mary Sue.
Actual sentences from this book include:
“He pulled his fingers from her and put them to her area of extreme sensation.”
And
“A demon walked out, looking like a women [sic.] but her obvious turquoise eyes and blueish skin were an obvious abnormality.”
I can’t even. I am baffled. I’m not upset, cause I got what I paid for but seriously no. Just don’t. If you’re looking for angsty YA fun summertime reading that involves “hunters” of some variety just proceed directly to Cassandra Clare and continue to love your life. Don’t do this to yourself.
Beloved is a great, steamy paranormal novel with a spicy heroine, a dashing male lead and tons of dark suspense and romance to keep you going. Definitely one of my favs. :)
It actually hurts my heart to post this, but this book is a cautionary tale for any author planning on self-publishing. This book is supposedly a paranormal romance about Kara, a demon hunter who has an on-again/of-again relationship with her boyfriend James. At no point in this book does the "hunter" part of Kara's background get explained. This reads like a very immature YA romance, except for the excessive profanity and the graphic sexuality of an underage girl. . This was extremely close to being the second book I have ever failed to finish. The spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors in this book would make a "Grammar Nazi" weep. After the third error I found, I started taking notes to possibly assist the author, but I quit after filling three pages on a legal pad little more than halfway through the book There were several paragraphs that I did not understand, due to incomplete sentences and words that don't fit the rest of the sentence contextually. . The plot line is a convoluted jumble of unanswered questions and half-filled holes. Why is she a "hunter"; was she born that way or trained? Why does Jessica hate James so much? Where did the Lycan cone from? Kara has more mood swings than an elementary school, making it extremely difficult to feel any kind of positive emotion towards the "protagonist" in this book. . A content editor and a line editor were really needed to possibly salvage this book. I applaud the author for her desire to self-publish this story, but sometimes, it is best to let the pros help.
This was a mix between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Shadowhunters to me. Personally, as someone who has been obsessed with BTVS since I was ten, this was very exciting for me.
The heroine of this story is, Kara Heart. She lives a hard life for many reasons, one of which is because she's a Hunter , which means she's a demon hunter of sorts. She protects her fellow classmates, even though they show their lack of respect any chance they get. Kara is an outcast of sorts, but has a best friend named, Jessica, a 12 year old brother, Josh, and a mysterious ex, James Dray.
Throughout the book there is a lot of chemistry between Kara & James. James broke up with Kara a year prior, without much of an explanation so she has her guard up. But, these two couldn't help but be drawn to one another. I didn't think I'd like James' character at first because he seemed like he may be a jerk because of how he left things. But, he was a sweetheart, supportive, and it was easily understood how much he cared for Kara by not only his intensity, but that it was easily seen he would do anything for her.
And the way he would hold her and kiss her forehead... Swoons
Then we have Kara and her little brother. Kara is basically the main caregiver to Josh because their dad took off when she was six and their mother, a fellow Hunter, is a partier so she's never home to take care of her kids.
These two have a rough life, but things only get worse when Josh gets kidnapped by a group of demons that want to wipe out Hunters altogether.
I don't want to give too much away but we get introduced to another Hunter, Megan. She kinda gives me the vibes that she's Faith to Kara's Buffy.
This book has everything: drama
fighting
romance
angst &
heartbreak.
It leaves us with a cliff-hanger but I can't wait to read the next book in this series! I can't wait!
Once again Bella has delivered. This amazing young Author has a flair for mixing a paranormal story with enough romance to keep your heart racing and the pages turning. I read this first on wattpad again in the editing phases and will be adding this series to my collection for sure. Bella has a way of drawing you into her characters lives that makes you feel like you are a part of it.A person can't help but cry at their loses and revel in their victories... and well feel a little flushed at other points. I must admit as a single mom, well it will be hard for me to find my James, but i'm sure going to try :) I highly recommend this book, so grab a copy snuggle up on the couch and keep warm as the nights get colder.
This is a much more developed and well written version. The characters are easier to love (and hate). I've always loved Bella's writing ever since I found her online. I've read all her books multiple times and they never get old. I read this in one night and absolutely loved this version. The author goes into much better detail about what's going on, how the characters feel, and what the scenery is around the characters. James and Kara's relationship had me on the edge of my seat with every turn of the page. I cant wait for the next rewrite to come out.
Great first story in the Heart of Hunters series by Bella Johnson. I first read this on Wattpad and thoroughly enjoyed it. James and Kara got under my skin and was keen to see what Bella brought to the book in the rewrite. I wasn't disappointed. James is a dream and Kara is a feisty main character. Even though I knew how it would end it still kept me turning the pages. Great job Bella. Roll on Book two.
..the first book i have ever read on this writer on wattpad and since then i have been following her everywhere( that sounds obssessed but maybe i am)
AlSO..both the characters are unforgettable. James Dray and Kara will take to a wheel of emotion( not sure if that sounds right) if its only possible for JD to come to life minus the supernatural side of him cause thats creepy..
I've followed Bella since I found her online nearly 6 years ago. I've read every bit of work she's put out. I loved the original story of James and Kara but this revised version is definitely pumped up and helps understand their universe more. The details are amazing. This story is so unlike any other story containing shifters or anything supernatural. I look forward to seeing how she plays this series out!
I've always loved Bella Johnson's book from when I first read them on wattpad. This was the first book I've read and its changed so much. I recently bought this whole series and will be buying more of her books. I just love the characters and the realistic situations that happen even if some of the characters are demon.
Beloved is an incredible and suspenseful! I couldn't put the book down at one point. It is everything from paranormal to romance to mystery. The main characters are awesome on their own and together and I can't wait for the next sequel. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone! Great job, Bella. Keep up the good work!
Absolutely loved it! Definitely love the changes she made but I also love how she didn’t change it too much and it still felt like of the one original versions I’ve read in the past (which I totally love as well!) but it was definitely worth the wait and I’ll always be a fan of Kara and James!! I am super excited for part 2!!
I have followed this author ever since she was on Wattpad and she has yet to disappoint me. This book has been apart of my heart for a long time and when I realized she was doing this book, I almost cried with excitement!! This book grabs you and doesn't let you go! You will not be disappointed in this book!!
I'm not finished reading but so far so good! From the very first paragraph the author has me hooked. The details are very well crafted & the characters are so relatable not to mention captivating. There's a suspense to it that makes you want to keep reading till the very end. Definitely a book worth reading!
Read this book when you had it on wattpad and then again after you had it published. It is a really good book would totally recommend it to other's. And So can't wait for the second one to get published
