After a massive volcanic eruption puts earth into nuclear winter, the planet is cloaked in clouds and no sun penetrates. Seas cover most of the land areas except high elevations which exist as islands where the remaining humans have learned to make do with much less. People survive on what they can take from the sea and with foodstuffs supplemented from an orbiting set of space stations.
Jess Drake is an agent for Interforce, a small and exclusive special forces organization that still possesses access to technology. Her job is to protect and serve the citizens of the American continent who are in conflict with those left on the European continent. The struggle for resources is brutal, and when a rogue agent nearly destroys everything, Interforce decides to trust no one. They send Jess a biologically-created agent who has been artificially devised and given knowledge using specialized brain programming techniques.
Instead of the mindless automaton one might expect, Biological Alternative NM-Dev-1 proves to be human and attractive. Against all odds, Jess and the new agent are swept into a relationship neither expected. Can they survive in these strange circumstances? And will they even be able to stay alive in this bleak new world?

This was a great follow up to book one which ended with a cliff hanger. I hope that the series continues because I like Jess and Dev so wholeheartedly. Their adventures were wild and the action never stops.
Their romance was the only sweet and gentle thing in this cold, terrifying future.
Take the time to read each book. I highly recommend the latest novels from Melissa Good.
As much as I loved the first book, and I could read about Dev all day, somehow this sequel seems "a bridge too far".
Thing is, I think if the whole story had been condensed to a single volume, it would have been exceptional. As it is, the plot drags on, just to fill another book. Granted, it is a rollercoaster of action, but gets a bit tedious failry early on, and it does the story no real good when the plot goes off on a tangent and tries to entertain us with things like rescueing a polar bear and teaching Dev how to surf.
The plot is solely focussed on the action and as such, the romance suffers. And while Dev is as charming as ever in all her innocence, the fact is that she just follows Jess, no questions asked. I had hoped the sequel would see Dev assert herself a bit more. She pulls a couple of heretofor unknown tricks from her sleeve, but there really isn't much in the way of character progression. And I think that's a shame.
Anyway, there's a lot of flying and fighting going on, but halfway through I couldn't be bothered anymore. The thing I hate about science fiction in general is that it is too easy to rely on the tech and whatnot, and charcters start pulling up stuff that just seems to be "invented at the moment" because the author didn't really know how to get out of a situation. The book almost lost me completely when Jess . I mean, really? The answer of course is that her mother was thoughtful enough to genetically manipulate her eggs. Sigh.
Another thing, something I overlooked in Partners 1, is: where the hell do they get all the resources? The planet is covered in water, with a few islands where people scrape by a living, yet no matter the destruction, it is always immediatly replaced. How?
An awesome continuation to the first book! Part two was even more action-packed and filled with crazy twists and quite a few betrayals; I was kept on the edge of my seat right until the ending. Jess was just as badass as in the first book and Dev was her usual sweet and capable self. The few quiet moments they shared were delightful. Definitely recommend for people to start with the first book and then read this one for a complete story.
I actually had a memory pop up on Facebook, from like 5 years ago, I was reading the series in the picture. I decided it was time for a re-read.
I was definitely not disappointed. I love the series and Jess and Dev. It’s so interesting experiencing new things, like a pool and swimming or a kiss, through Dev’s eyes. The world has definitely changed and Good does a fantastic job of bringing this new earth to life. Jess is one tough cookie and I love how Dev brings out her softer side. Good does a excellent job of bringing the fighting to life. I have no problem being the imagery to life with the words written on the pages. The flights, fights, and relationships are fantastic. On to book three!

This is an Uber-Xena Series written by my favorite fan fiction writer, Melissa Good. This book and series is set far in the future. And a future that I hope will not come to pass. Yet, I love these characters and these stories. I re-read them at least once a year. If you like science fiction and you like Xena and Gabrielle fan fiction, you will like this “reincarnation “ of them in a world far different from theirs and ours. There are currently 3 books in the series. I am hoping for a fourth one. This book is the second one in the series.
