Weird Girls #0.4

A Curse Awakened

Rate this book
Discover Cecy Robson’s sensational Weird Girls series—or return to where the magic first began—with this eBook original prequel novella about four sisters coming to grips with their unique supernatural powers.

Celia Wird shouldn’t possess the ability to transform into a tigress. Her three sisters should never be able to burst into flames, heal wounds, or transform common objects into deadly weapons. And yet they do.

Before they were born, the Wird Sisters were cursed by a spell that was intended to destroy them, not endow them with extraordinary powers. The sisters’ magic is untamed and explosive at best, and time is running out for them to take command.

Vampires have targeted Celia’s sweet, tragically human ex-boyfriend Danny. The sisters rush to his aid, but in order to take down the vamps, first they must face their dark past and break a spell that’s screwing up their powers. Except this curse wasn’t meant to be broken... and the witch who cast it isn’t done toying with them yet.

Fans of the Weird Girls series are going to love the glimpse back offered in A Curse Awakened by Cecy Robson. We travel back to the time right before the sister’s headed for Tahoe. We learn how they break the binding spell that is messing with their abilities. Action-packed, A Curse Awakened is filled with humor and danger as it answers questions about the girls’ powers and introduces them to the supernatural world.

Through Celia’s narrative, we learn about the sisters’ curse, their parent’s deaths and meet Danny. Danny, Celia’s ex-boyfriend, is in serious trouble with a group of vampires, and the girls decide to help. First, they need full control of their powers, and Danny may be able to help them. The tale that unfolds had me consuming it in one breathless, hilarious sitting.

Robson delighted me with the sister’s banter and snark in A Cursed Awakened. I love how genuine the girls are as they attempt to free themselves and help Danny. Seeing them fight with their abilities before and after the binding was awesome and hilarious. Robson explained each of their powers, and we witnessed the changes in those abilities. I The focus here is truly on the sisters, so there is no romance and all of that lovely drama, but it was so refreshing. While this is a novella, Robson proves once again that she is a master storyteller regardless of the length. Fans of the series will gobble this up and be eager to dive back in with the next release, A Curse Bloodline releasing November 18, 2014. This Weird Girl fan cannot wait!

This is a prequel introducing you to the Wird sisters and how they came by their unusual powers. I immediately liked them all, especially Celia, who was the oldest and the main focus of this story. There were touches of sibling humor which I appreciated, being the oldest of four myself, and it was just the right amount and not overdone. I'm going to take a chance on the next book and see where it goes.

Penguin/Loveswept priced this at 3.99 which I thought was a little too much for a story that ended at 84 pages. I know the author has little control over pricing, but I did want to mention this for anyone on the fence about purchasing.

Get to know The Weird Sisters from the very beginning before they ever honed their powers and had a full understanding of what they really are and what kind or paranormal creatures are out there. They will find out they are not so “weird” after all. Cursed from birth, Celia and her sisters were cursed and ended up with powers they will eventually use fight evil supes and landing them a solid spot in the paranormal world…on the good side of course.

This book is release after the series has already been established up to the third installment, Cursed by Destiny. But no worries, this is a great introduction to the series. As Celia and her sisters get to know more of their powers and this new world they are living in, you will learn it with them. I promise that each book in the series gets better and better. The characters get stronger, action becomes more intense and the romance becomes more complicated.

If you have already read this series, this is a fun read to get to know the sisters “pre-kick ass” years and definitely pre-Misha and pre-Aric years. This is actually post-Danny story where everyone is just getting to know what this world is about; making this novella a perfect read to new readers of the series.

I did have to step out of what I already know about this world as some of it yet to exist. It was hard to get used to a less confident Weird Sisters. It was hardest to get used to the girls not having their powers in full control. Not only that their powers have matured, they have also matured emotionally. They really have come a long way from this stage of their lives. I also kept looking for my Aric and Misha whom I desperately need to get more of.

Cecy Robson is one of my favorite authors and I have yet to read a book by her that I didn’t like. All the books in this series are written well with good world building. It’s full of snarky humor, action packed scenes, strong and sexy heroes and kick ass heroines. You can also expect a heart break or two. If you like these things that I mentioned, this series is for you.

Sisters, by way of birth or their gifts? A Curse Awakened is a prequel to the Weird Girls series by Cecy Robson, and being my first foray into this series and a very short prequel, it seems to go back in time to when three girls were just learning their unique powers in a “baptism under fire,” manner. Focusing on Celia and her tigress form, it seems that she must learn to accept her tigress and identify with it, body and soul which will unleash her true potential and gifts. When she and her sisters are caught up in a rescue attempt against a nasty group of vampires, it is do or die time and the tension and actions go off the charts! Can they control their powers enough to save a man from endless torture at the hands of the vampires?

Totally new to this series, I have to say, the interaction between this girls has humor and snark in the bag! Cecy Robson has a great command over her characters as she brings them to life, and makes them feel alive! I enjoyed this enough to want more! I need to learn about these girls, where they are now and who they have become! Their banter sounded like typical teens, and made for refreshing reading! I'm thinking there is some real depth to this series and that I need to discover what it is!

I absolutely adore this series and the very fact that Ms. Robson gave us this much appreciated look into the sister's lives before the beginning of book one, is a huge testament to not only how wonderful a writer she is but what an awesome series this is. This is a must read for any fan. There is just so much more in this than you could have asked for or hoped for.

I loved learning more about the girl's relationship with Danny and just how far back it goes. Not only that but we get a very small background on his family as well as how he got involved in all the paranormal stuff that we later learn he researches so well and knows about. What he was like in college, which lets face it, was pretty fabulous to get. And if that wasn't enough, we get the girls background on their strange and kooky powers and their even stranger and mysterious family life before the opening of book one.

I won't go into too much detail but this was a fabulous addition to the series and one that I am so happy Robson gave us. There was a lot packed into this tiny little story and it makes me even more excited for A Cursed Boodline.

This latest prequel novella that is part of the Weird Girls series caught my eye and I couldn't resist the chance to read about where it all began for the four sisters. Whether short piece or longer, I love each new installment to the series just for a chance to visit again with the sisters, check in on a new adventure, and see a new part of their world.

This is a prequel in the chronological time line and the earliest yet since it takes things back to before they came to Tahoe. It can be read first or at any point in the series since it introduces things, but also stands alone.

The story opens when Celia and her sisters just finished nursing school and got jobs that will allow them to move on to a new place and new beginning. However, Danny calls and needs their help because a group of vampires have taken his dad and hurt him. Meeting Danny leads to their own encounter with the vamps and a trail of discovery and a race against time. Danny says their powers are bound and helps them discover the origins and details of who and what they are just as they work to help Danny get his dad back from a crazed vampire master. In the meantime, Celia has her first dream about the shadowy man who is both stranger and familiar.

This is a quick one, but it is packed with all things cool about this series- sisterly interaction time, danger, new world building stuff, secrets laid open and just a hint of the romance that is to come for Celia. It functions as a nice tide over piece as I wait (slightly impatiently) for the next full-length installment in the series. Danny's presence is a fun addition.

All in all, loved it and always come away wanting more. Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance Lovers must try these. Start with this one in fact.

My thanks to Net Galley for the chance to read this one in exchange for an honest review.

As most of you know I'm a HUGE Cecy Robson fan and was really excited to get my hands on this novella. This novella was an awesome look into the beginning story of my favorite 4 sisters. A Curse Awakened gives us new insight and new information on the curse that made the Wird girls, well weird. ;) We get to see the girls really start to break free from their previous lives and we get to see what thrust them into the paranormal world in the first place, aside from them being cursed. We meet new people and as hopeful as the ending is, it was sad as well.

Little bit of information, this is a Prequel Novella and timeline-wise should be read before The Weird Girls (which is also a novella).

Two of my favorite passages

"Shayna drove us in Danny's truck. Now, we typically didn't allow Shayna to drive anyone, in anything, anywhere. The tri-state was already packed with crazy road rage drivers ready to smash into anyone who cut-or flipped-them off.
These same drivers were scared shitless of Shayna."

"Shayna skipped out of the vehicle, twirling her wrist until her faithful bat transformed into a lethal sword. She needed a weapon when Taran crashed out of the car and onto her knees, scraping her legs on the asphalt. 'Son of a bitch. Who was the asshat who deemed you worthy of a license? There's something goddamn wrong with you!'"

There you have it Cecy lovers, go forth and read!

Mon avis en Français

My English review

Cecy Robson presents an entirely new story in the Weird Girls world in the form of a novella, a prequel, placing itself before all the volumes released. Oh yes, because here we find our dear sisters when they’re moving on which allows us to learn more about their origins and past.

In very few pages the author presents a large number of things. The sisters settle, trying somehow to control their unpredictable powers. And when Danny, a former friend of Celia asks for their help to save his father from vampires, the young woman and her sisters do not hesitate to get into action. But to achieve their goals, the young women will have to investigate their past and the curse that strikes them to try to limit the effects … something that could be much more complicated than expected.

I loved this little story. In fact, I always find it very interesting to discover more about our heroines and the author presents some revelations which I did not expect about. New enemies are introduced here and it’s true that I’m curious to see if we’ll see them later, but I do not doubt about that. This novel is a very good start and I think fans of the series will be more than happy!

I have not read any of the books in the series but this prequel leaves me with the desire to check them out. This was a quick read and a great set up to a series. It explains how the girls came into their powers. I liked the dynamics between the girls and how they come to the aid of their friend Danny. Try this one out and I bet you will want to read the rest of the series too!

A nice quick read, This is a short story that explains how the Wird sisters came into their powers and broke the curse that hampered their use of magic. Fast moving and well written, this story brings a lot of light to the other 6 books in the Weird Girls series. It also makes you want to reread the other books.

Great novella for a reader who has never been introduced into the weird girl series. You learn about the family through celia's pov. Each of the girls powers are explained and unleashed through out this short story. We are introduced to Danny and learn how the girls break their curse. Because of this novella I have been turned on to the series and will reading the weird girl series

WEIRD [Girls] Wednesday: A CURSE AWAKENED! On Tour!

I really enjoyed getting to see the “beginnings” of the Weird sister’s story. Having read the other books in the series I felt it filled in a lot of history and gave me insight into the characters’ personalities. Plus, it has some very clear plots that are very well spun in the short format. It is action packed, full of loyalty and what you will do for those you love. The women are as yet unmarked by the experiences they have in the rest of the series, although they have had a hell of a time anyway.

I really felt their desolation and desperation in the face of evil and power. They make neat work of a few nasties and learn much about the honor of master vampires.

There’s one dreamy sex sequence that I think is precognitive to future relationships Celia will have. I think, or it could just be a sexy vamp toying with her. Celia Wird, is the oldest sister and she was cursed or gifted with the ability to shift into a tiger form and shift through the earth. As far as the action scenes, I found it hard to keep track of whether Celia is in a tiger form, human form or a combination. I would like to see a connection between the curse which we learn about here and the earth shifting ability. If there is no connection it feels a little deus ex machinated.

We also get to meet Celia’s former beau and brilliant family pal, Dan who comes to the women for help. He’s already researcing the origins of their curse, and its extra curse that was meant to bind their powers. Having a geeky friend comes in handy for them!

Cecy is very clever as she writes this prequel, it gives a ton of information on the sisters and their pasts — things I didn’t realize I wanted to know but that I believe offer a fuller experience and which tell me that Cecy imagined this world quite deeply before she ever wrote the stories down.

I liked it, it was quick, action packed and maybe a little “Weird.” it falls more on the ‘Urban Fantasy’ side of the fence between that and ‘Paranormal Romance.’

Clever plays on names and such like Weird and Wird, are often just clever puns or hooks to catch your interest. But with this series the “Weird Girls” thing and the last name “Wird” is both a clever device and actually adds to the story. If anyone ever made fun of you for a family thing like your name (try having a verb as a last name like I do) you will feel a real kinship with these young women.

A Curse Awakened is a prequel novella in the Weird Girls series by Cecy Robson.

In A Curse Awakened the Wird sisters are younger and in a sense more innocent (than the girls we know and love). They are fresh after graduation and haven’t moved to Tahoe yet. Their powers are weak and unreliable, for that reason they are afraid to use them. After some research and with the help of their friend, Danny, they realized their powers are bound, luckily for them Danny is the scholar type and finds the solution to their problem. A solution that takes them to a place where they will learn more about their roots and their maternal family. There, they will find some good things and others better left untouched.
They may not be yet the strong women we know, but still they kick ass whenever is necessary and in this installment the ass that needs kicking comes with fangs.

Even though they are a lot younger in this novella, we clearly see the characteristics that make each sister different and unique. Also, it’s pretty clear that despite not having many things in common, their sister-bond is as strong as ever.

In this prequel we get to see the incursion of the Wird girls to the paranormal world. We also see them learning about their curse and we see them confronting the family that cursed them and abandoned them. There is one character that was introduced in this novella that I feel we haven’t seen the last of him. I’m almost sure we’ll see him again in book(s) to come.

A Curse Awakened has everything I love about this series, strong and well-depicted characters, non-stop action, snarky humor, and a mix of rare legends and mythology.

Cecy Robson’s writing is excellent as always; she has a gift with words that easily captures the reader and traps him/her between the pages.

A Curse Awakened can be read as the first book in the Weird Girl series, but I recommend you to read it after you have read a couple of books in the series to get the full effect of how much the Wird girls have changed and grown throughout the series.

A Curse Awakened is a novella that packs a punch and it is the perfect appetizer to keep us satisfied while we wait for the release of next book in the series, A Cursed Bloodline, to be release on November 18th.

A glimpse to the sisters before coming to Tahoe. This is when they came fulling into their powers and their first true eye opening of the dangerous paranormal world.

****FULL REVIEW****
Danny's desperate call for Celia's help gets Celia and the girls into action, days before leaving for their new home. Vampires are after him and his dad. A female vampire master has fixated on Danny's dad, feeding on him and now taken him. The sisters and Danny come across another vampire with the same target, looking to advance himself as a Master.

The sisters are determined and looking forward to the new move. They are growing and trying to control the touch of powers they have. The sisters don't want to get involved, but Celia wants to help the one person that has been good to them all. They try to avoid the paranormal world, but that isn't always possible. We see Celia struggle with her growing strength and control of her tigeress, especially with no prey to hunt. The stress of the moving have brought on the nightmares of her last hunt, and kill.

We see a bit of Celia's past with Danny, talk of their past relationship. Through Danny the girls learn a touch of curses and magic. He's been reading up on magic to help his friends, the sisters. And now, he believes the sisters are bound, holding their powers back along with their control of what touch they have.

This story touches on the girls previous experience with vampires and magic curses. The vampire experience is of both views, kind and horrid. Then the magic curse that was done to their parents, and them in turn. There is a nasty curse that is held over them. There is even a glimpse of what can happen to those that mess with the bad people of magic and powers.

Not the romance setting. But kicking on the action setting. The girls are a bit new on the fighting side of things, and it shows in the battles they get in. But I love that they are not perfect and are learning, even learning of their powers.

Cecy delivers with these sisters once again. They struggle, but fight strong and stick together. They are new to the fighting, but they fight hard. We learn more of the family curse set upon them, bringing a glimpse of the past with it.

A Curse Awakened is a wee story set before the Weird Girls series by Cecy Robson begins. It is number 0.4 in the series. It is that because there is already a prequel novella out there, introducing us to the four sisters and their unusual powers. This novella shows us how they came about their powers. Well, some of them anyways.

One of my favorite things about these characters is how they are strong yet still quite vulnerable and innocent. In the full-length books they are fairly new to their abilities and that is quadrupled in this novella. In this book, they have powers but not nearly all of them. We are finding out how they gain access to all they can do. I found this to be very interesting. It was nice to see the dawn of who these girls are today, if I can say it that way.

Since this is a Weird Girls book, there is, of course, tons of action. I have to admit that I giggled quite a bit near the end of the first fight scene in this book. The girls are just too cute in their innocence! The fact that they are a little awkward and klutzy helps the humor. It’s nice to see truly how far they have come from this novella to the third full length book. And it’s made me even more excited to read the fourth book, A Cursed Bloodline, available November 18th 2014. Cecy is also good at including at least one “oh my goodness I can’t believe that just happened…and out of nowhere!” moments in her stories and this is no exception. It’s a good one.

If you are a fan of this series, then I definitely recommend you read A Curse Awakened. It ties into the series very well. If you have not read any of these books, I would almost start with either the #0.5 novella or the first full-length book and save this novella for a bit into the series. I just find it means more after reading some of the hardships the girls have had to endure. It puts things even more into perspective.

The Weird Girls series is fun, funny, gripping and exciting. Definitely a series urban fantasy fans need to try.

A Curse Awakened is another prequel novella in Cecy Robson's Weird Girls series (one was released before the first novel). It takes place right before the girls gained their full powers, which I thought was very interesting. The curse that was placed on them by a distant relative remained more on less a mystery until now, and it was great to learn more about it. The curse, it seems, actually backfired, but while the girls didn’t die like they should have, they didn’t reach their full potential either. So when Celia’s first boyfriend Danny (fans of the series undoubtedly know and love the shy geek) comes to her for help because the vampires kidnapped his father, the girls have to find a way to deal with the curse and become stronger before they run to his rescue.

I never thought I’d say this, but it was nice to see the girls when it was just the four of them, before all the romantic drama that follows. Cecy writes her action scenes very well and in this novella the focus is firmly on that. On the other hand, I was reminded of Taran’s excessive rudeness which made me glad that she mellowed out later in the story. Celia's role as the protector of her family was even more important before their entanglement with weres and vampires. I loved being reminded of her strength.

A Curse Awakened is great for those already familiar with the series, but it can be a great introduction for someone still on the fence about reading it. It will give you a great feel of these characters and Cecy’s writing, and I have a feeling it will push you in the right direction, i.e. towards these books. After all, what’s not to like?

I received this ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, I was in no way compensated for this review.

Cecy Robson's A Curse Awakened was an intriguing read to the Weird Girls series. It takes place before the series "officially" starts, yet their curse is in full swing. The girls are getting ready to move away and start a new life with new jobs, but their plans are abruptly halted when their friend Danny comes to them begging for help. His father has been kidnapped by vampires.

Celia and her sisters are racing to find his father, for he can't have much time left in the hands of vampires. He joins them in the search as well. The sisters learn a thing or two about their curse and put that knowledge to good use.

Sometimes it can be hard to read these prequel stories that are taking place before the series stars. We don't have Aric or Misha, so it can be hard to get back into the swing of things. Or maybe it was the horrendous cold I have at the moment of reading this novella and writing the review! That could be a part of it too!

I am wondering though if some of the "new" characters we met will play a role in the next book. There has to be some sort of reason for this, everything that we just read, right? Right!

I soooo cannot wait for the next Weird Girls book! According to Cecy we should see it sometime in November. Which after that ending from the third one, is still going to be a wait, but at least it's in this calendar year!

Overall Rating 4/5 stars

**Thank you Random House and Netgalley for providing this in exchange for an honest review**

The Wird sisters are moving in 4 days. They need to move for their own sanity. Their parents were murdered and they need a fresh start somewhere that isn't filled with painful memories. Things seem to be falling into place for them. They've all found employment and have almost finished their packing. Then Celia's ex, Danny, calls. He needs help from the girls. His father has been kidnapped by vampires.

This was my first introduction to the Weird Girls series. Even though I didn't love it, I did enjoy it enough to move Sealed with a Curse from my "Maybe" to to my TBR list. The thing I loved most about the story was the bond the sisters shared. What can I say, I'm always a sucker when it comes to sister stories. Another thing I really liked was how the girls powers where handled. Each has their own unique power. They also have distinctive, likable personalities.

There were a few things I that bothered me. Taran has a fire ability. It's obvious that she is immune to her flames, but her clothes? Really? Also, how did Danny go from not really knowing anything about supernaturals to becoming an almost expert on all thing supernatural? He said he was able to track down a few books recently, but yet he seems to have all the answers when the time comes for the girls to break their curse?

This prequel is a nice introduction to the Weird Girls series. In this short novella, the girls are packing up and ready to move out of Jersey until Celia's ex-boyfriend Danny calls and asks for help. His father is the target of a rogue bunch of vampires. Celia and her sister have some interesting powers - she shifts into a tiger - but their powers are muted. Danny suggests that their magic is bound and that they need to find a way to remove the bindings. It seems that the family carries a nasty curse and breaking the curse is kind of nasty. Meanwhile, the bad vampires are busy doing their thing - biting and drinking blood, etc. I had to chuckle as Celia's character makes some funny references to sparkly vampires and things Buffy would do.

I enjoyed this little novella and I am curious enough to continue on with the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for a review copy of this book.

It's always a bit disjointing to read a prequel, but it was nice to get a bit of the Wird girls background. I was expecting Misha to be in the story, but that's not the fault of the author. I look forward to reading the next installment in the series.

Thanks again for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Four stars: An exciting novella that fills in the blanks and leaves you hungry for the next book.

The Wird sisters are used to trials and tribulations. They were cursed when they were young, which gave them inexplicable powers. When there parents were murdered, the girls went into foster care, where they bounced from home to home and earned the label "The Weird Sisters."
Now the girls are grown, and ready to move away from New Jersey and start over. Before they leave, Celia gets a frantic phone call from her ex boyfriend Danny. His father was kidnapped by vampires and he needs their help. Celia and her sisters know that they can't take on the vamps and survive unless they free themselves from the curse that has plagued them and fully unlock their powers. Will they sisters survive breaking the curse and the vampires?

What I Liked:

*Wow! It isn't often that I read novellas, and even when I do, I am rarely satisfied. I feel like too many novellas are short fillers and they end before they get going. That isn't the case with A Curse Awakened. At just under a hundred pages, this is more than a filler. It is an exciting story that fills in some of the gaps of the main story line. If you wanted to know more about the Wird girls curse, read this one.
*This novella takes you back in time to before the girls had unlocked their full powers and before they moved to Lake Tahoe. I loved following the girls as they traced the origin of their curse with the help of their friend Danny. Can you say creepy? When the girls go to break the curse they are encountered by a garage of horrors. The woman that cast that curse must have been a nut job. It was an intense scene to say the least.
*Danny has been an important part of the gang from the beginning, and he has always been a favorite of mine. I liked going back in time and seeing how he and the four sisters grew close. Danny is the brains of the operation, and I am always eager to see what he will think of next.
*If you are worried about not having enough action, you needn't. This book is packed full of fight scenes and paranormal horror that you have come to expect with a Weird Girls book. Never a dull moment!
*I appreciated that this novella provided a full story. I was satisfied at the end that I wasn't left with a cliffhanger or a bunch of unanswered questions. This is definitely worth the read.
And The Not So Much:
*I liked getting the back story details on the curse, but I still don't have the full picture as to why the crazy witch decided to curse the girls' mother. There is speculation, but not a firm reason. I am hoping that we will get a bit more on the powerful witch. Who was the werewolf that tore out her throat and why?
*The girls encounter a strange cousin who ultimately helps them unlock the curse. There is a huge twist regarding this cousin. I wanted more on this story arc. I was hoping that the girls would go back and help the grandma and learn more information, but alas that story line was left hanging. I hope that it is revisited down the road.

A Curse Awakened is a thrilling and satisfying novella in the terrific Weird Girls Series. This is one of the best new Urban Fantasy series to hit the market in the last couple of years. It has everything you love in a good UF series. Great characters, plenty of paranormal creatures, originality, humor and romance. I can't recommend these books enough. If you have yet to check it out, this novella is a good place to start as it is actually a prequel story. All I can say is that if you haven't started this series, you are missing out.

Favorite Quotations:

"The last thing I want is you straddling his skinny ass and making skinny ass babies."

"Truth doesn't always matter, Celia. Especially if there are enough willing to believe the lies."

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.

I have to say this author is a new one for me. I came across her name in a NetGalley email and.. something drew me to this series. I am usually leay about new authors. I am picky I guess.. but I was too intrigued to turn back. So, I bought her series up to what I could. This book was a novelette and let me tell ya.. it went from O.O to O.o in about two pages. (laughs) It's fast paced, funny, heart pounding and a damn good story.

We meet Celia (a shifter of sorts; tigress), and her sisters, Shayna (sweet but deadly with wood or metal), Emme (quiet, shy and a healer) and then we have Taran (hot headed, stubborn and could out curse a sailor on shore leave) when her very human, nerdy, ex-boyfriend Danny calls her and says vampires are trying to eat him and his father. Yeah that is a double blink and silence. But Celia being the caring person she is agrees to meet him at the park a few blocks from her home.

That is where things go from bad to diving off a cliff that has no end. The vampires show up, cause a ruckus.. and die. All but one. But that was not all the girls doing. Quennel, a vampire nonetheless, dressed in his biker gear shows up and helps dispatch the vampires. Quennel asks them where Giavanna is. everyone is like.. who? Come to find out, Giavonna is the vampire mistress (a master vampire) that has been after Danny adn his father. Namely his father. apparently he is her feed bag. (shudders) He is after her to kill her for his master. If he does so he will gain her family. He will be a master himself. Celia knows they are not going to let Danny lose his father but how can they take on a family of vampires.. and survive themselves? They barely made it through this encounter and it was only seven vampires and they had Quennel to help them.

Well seems that Danny has been doing some research on his own and tells the girl his theory that their powers, abilities, whatever you wish to call them have been bound. If they can break that binding they will be better, stronger. With heavy hearts they go n search of this.. curse. Cecilia remembers things from her childhood that helps them to figure out that jealousy and I am sure fear that they would be an epic power were behind this.

If that wasn't enough torture they have to go through hell (not literally) to break what has been done to them. With Danny;s help they make it out better. And now it is time to take on the vamps, rescue the human and get the hell back home so they can leave town in a few days. A new life awaits. Another adventure too.

This is definitely going on my top list of books to read. if this is just the beginning it makes me want to hurry and run through them all as fast as my eyes and brain can handle. Epic, epic story and idea here. I love it!!

So I'm a fan of the "Weird Girls" books. They're light and they're fluffy and they don't require a whole lot of thought, which is kind of what I want sometimes. Yes the romance kind of frustrates me, but I'm beginning to understand that not all authors are as good at drawing out the tension between characters as say Ilona Andrews or Jennifer Estep. This is technically a prequel novella to the series--even to the first "prequel" novella The Weird Girls (even though numbering wise its considered after).

I'm not opposed to prequels as a rule, but for me this didn't work quite as well since I've now read two novels and 2 novellas set AFTER this one and the Wird family is markedly different feeling. Enough so I didn't feel a connection to them as I did in the previous "prequel".

Part of this is because Celia is a lot less confident in this novella as she tries to come to grips with her inner tigress. What keeps me reading in the main series is that fact that Celia is so in control of that side of herself. Over the course of the first two novels (I haven't read book 3 yet so I can't comment on how it plays out there) she really comes to terms with how to handle her inner "beast" and come to a way that suits all parties.

I will admit that the lack of drama surrounding her love life is nice. I'm a fan of Aric being with Celia (pack be damned), but her constantly slapping down Misha is at least amusing (even if he is a creeper at times). This novella none of that is in play because she hasn't MET them yet so its just the usual drama one has with an ex (okay well vampire mafia kidnapping your ex's father is not strictly speaking usual). I did get a kick out of reading about Jersey too.

Overall this was just not what I was hoping for however. Its nice to flesh out the Wird girls backstory a bit more, but I wanted more of their present circumstances. Or maybe the novella from another Wird sister's POV (this was from Celia's).

Tempted by a Rogue Prince is the book that I wanted to read since I laid eyes on Kissed by a Dark Prince! Vail immediately caught my attention in this first volume and the fact that he's under the grip of a dark witch rekindled my interest in this character through the volumes of this series.

If you've made the jump and tried to read this new series written by the talented Felicity Heaton, you and I know how the main characters in these stories are intense, ready for anything and especially endearing. I love the fact that Prince Loren and Prince Vail are elves and they are much like vampires on several points.

Rosalind is a strong woman, but I thought she was the least confident female character among our heroines. I found her fears and vulnerability toward her fate very touching and I felt a stronger connection to her. Rosalind is a white witch, but the mere fact of being a witch will put her life in danger in Vail's presence.

Vail really surprised me, I expected to see a man destroyed and annihilated by Kordula. Vail is tormented by his past and nothing seems to get him out of his torpor. The way toward the light and freedom is far away and hard to take; Rosalind will do anything to help, but all hope seems lost.

Even at the end of this book, Vail is not fully saved and only time and Rosalind's love will overcome this turmoil. Vail is so deeply hurt that even if Rosalind is his fated mate, she can't (and sometimes won't) easily try to reach him, relieve him and even heal him.

I like the fact that Felicity Heaton showed us that sometimes love is not everything, you have to devote yourself and learn to live with the past, your mistakes and that love can conquer everything with time.

Vail makes me think a lot Zsadist in the BDB series by J.R. Ward!

We also meet Fenix, a succubus touched by a curse that reaches his fated mate. I was interested in reading more about it and I hope to see him in future books!

Tempted by a Rogue Prince is probably my favorite of this series and I recommend the whole series to all fans of paranormal romance that loves paranormal elements and supernatural creatures!

A Curse Awakened is a prequel to the Weird Girls series and I confess to having already read one of the full length books in this series and whilst I enjoyed it I had not rushed out to buy any more of this series as there is just so much urban fantasy around that for me it has to really stand out. Now I'm kicking myself because this short book gives answers to questions that I had and now much more than before I want to see just what will happen to these characters. These four sisters all have unusual supernatural powers and in this novella the reason behind it , actually a curse is delved into but that's just the beginning of the journey these girls will take.
Celia is the eldest sister and has a tiger form but her other sisters can do amazing things as well. The power of fire, transformation and healing to name just a few of the simply incredible gifts these girls have but their lives are blighted and when this story starts they are about to move but Celia's ex boyfriend Danny needs their help against vampires! It's not something that anyone would want to willingly tackle but Celia, Taran, Shayna and Emme Wird are made of sterner stuff and besides someone has to do something before Danny's father ends up dead or worse!
I really enjoyed this even though as a novella it was rather short. It explains a lot of the background as to just why these girls can do the things they do and as it's not bogged down by senseless romance it actually really works . There's enough action to keep the readers attention engaged and the family dynamics makes sense. I wish I had read this sooner as it gives valuable insight into the Wird families background and so for this reason I would happily recommend reading this book.
