Grad student Jules has always felt different. He’s got buddies, sure, but relationships make him turn tail and run. Dreams of tigers and memories of a mysterious great-grandmother make him wonder if there’s something his parents aren’t telling him. When an unexpected inheritance offers clues to Jules’s destiny, he’s intrigued, to say the least. It doesn’t hurt that the news is delivered by a sexy Russian who seems to know Jules better than he knows himself.
A prince of a powerful tiger clan, Sergei Sidorenko wants to live as an ordinary man. But his family nags him to take his place as king. They offer him a deal: teach the lost prince Julian how to shape-shift and control his untapped sorcerous talent. Then Jules will be king, and war between the once-rival clans will be avoided. Most importantly, Sergei will be released from clan obligations forever. It sounds like an easy out. But Sergei doesn’t count on Jules being so temptingly innocent, so eager to learn. Lessons in sorcery turn to lessons in love. And Sergei falls hard for Jules.
Dark clouds gather over the tiger clans. In a bid to seize power, Jules’s ambitious older brother, Anton, works on the key to immortality. And he needs Jules’s flesh and blood to finish the spell. Tangled in Anton’s machinations, with a traitor in their midst, Jules and Sergei must fight for their lives—and for the love that destiny would deny them.

The page numbers are NOT accurate. This book is more than 200 pages; it's 4,000 locations, but it feels MUCH longer. I skimmed a few chapters, but I did finish. Eventually.
What can I say? I love shifter stories, but sorcerer tigers are not my cuppa, apparently.
The burn was slow ... sooo damn slow. Too slow. Mind-numbingly slow.
Nothing happens until the last few chapters, and the villain's accomplice is obvious almost immediately.
The writing was flat and left me disengaged and bored.
This one was on my TBR shelf forever. I suggest removing it from yours.
Exceptional world-building+alluring characters+outstanding writing=one great story!
I've yet to read Linda Gayle before, but let me tell you- I’m a new fan.
A complex world of magical shifters unfolds with breathtaking beauty. A royal family composed of good, honest, and fair tiger shifters battle against a storming evil. The loss of a prominent tiger in the clan reveals a secret. More precisely he’s a concealed weapon in the war, an unknown brother, and a potential future king. This advantage happens to be Jule’s, a college grad, who is oblivious to his impending future.
Russian prince, Sergei, is presented with a challenge. If he succeeds he scores a ticket of freedom from the responsibilities he is shrinking away from. He wants to win…bad. What exactly does he have to do? Find the young man and set his hidden tiger free. Doesn't sound too hard, aye?
Kink in the plans…he didn't foresee a fascination with Jules and definitely didn't anticipate falling in love with him. His sister is presumed to mate the new king. She will fulfill his families’ duties and stand by his side, share his bed, and become his partner. Talk about bad luck. Sergei reigns in his attraction and desires. He won’t turn Jules’ down, but he won’t make the first move. Their connection is instant and fierce but Sergei is known as a selfish bastard and he'd hate to ruin his reputation. He wants to do his job and get out. Yet the thought of anyone sharing Jules’ bed makes his hackles rise and his claws come out. Sergei finds himself in uncharted waters. He’s never wanted anything more than instant gratification with a lover, but with Jules’ he craves the whole package. He wants…everything.
Jules has never felt complete. He never fit in. He wondered what was missing. None of his wild, restless fantasies were remotely close to his epic fate. Everything he thought he knew about his life was a fabrication, a cover, and sadly, a sham. An astonishing life awaits him, but only if he wants it. He is a powerful tiger, he can be king…and a king takes what he wants. So, now the question becomes, what does he want?
A war is brewing, battles are fought and these predators hold nothing back. If you are squeamish, you may want to pass. It gets a little ugly and Anton (the murderous brother) is a depraved villain. To my delight, the vulgar was balanced with a magnificent love affair. They hold back until they can’t anymore, and then defy everything and everyone…and it’s freaking HOT. If you like shifters and magic, if you enjoy sexy sweet forbidden love, and if royal tiger boys sound intriguing, you need this book. It was nearly perfect and certainly the best shifter book I've read in a long, long time.
The first half was pretty good, with Sergei and Jules getting to know each other and Jules' power and shit. That was pretty cool. But then that weird shit with the bad guy started and I'm sorry, but I just couldn't get into it. Everybody's got their limits, and I think I just found one of mine.
The second half was predictable and that's when the boredom level started to really skyrocket. It's hard to maintain interest when you can literally predict the next move in the book. But I managed to get thru it, and I have to say the happy ending was all I could wish for.
This actually went slower than I thought on the sex part, well all happens still in the first week, but is something different than the usual books where the MCs sleep together few minutes after their first meeting. The book wasn't bad, but there was so much that needed more explanations and the end seemed rushed, alsmot abrupt. I liked the MCs, and the story wasn't boring. 4 stars
One of my Top Five Paranormal Books of 2013 was Linda Gayle's A Shadow of Wings, which I gave 5 stars (A+) review on Reviews by Jessewave. So, I was very happy to see that the author had published another M/M book with Tiger Boys. Now, it isn't a sequel to A Shadow of Wings, but introduces another fascinating shifter universe, one with magical Russian tigers!
As with every book I've read by Ms. Gayle, she is able to weave incredible original world building along with a steamy romance that knocks my socks off and makes me beg for more. In Tiger Boys, she gives us Sergei and Jules, two men who should be enemies because of their family backgrounds, but who instead come together in a quest to save their lineage from a ruthless villain (namely Jules' brother). Add in complex secondary characters like Sergei's sister and Jules' parents and you have a great read. But the thing I loved best about Tiger Boys was the chemistry between Jules and Sergei. The slow build-up to their coming together is not to be missed and when you add the magical/paranormal elements of the novel, you will be rooting for Sergei and Jules' happy ending.
Because I read so many paranormal books when I find one that resonates with me, I want to shout about it from the rooftops and I can with Tigers Boys. Highly recommended!
P.S. If you haven't read A Shadow of Wings, run out and buy it. It is only .99 on Amazon right now!
I was not captivated by this story. It sounded like it would be a great book. A shifter who has grown up never knowing he was one, let alone that they actually exist. We had the bad villain, his brother. Then we have the 'hero', his (will-be) lover/tutor.
It just dragged on and on, to me. It took me a few days to finish. I was interested in seeing how it ended. There were times I'd leave half-way through a paragraph to come back later. I was expecting more denial and angst. There wasn't much. To me, it felt like the story revolved around the 'sexual tension' more than the story behind it. Not that I don't mind sexual tension, but if you are going to have a plot and mystery, stick more to that.
So, the story. Jules was placed in a foster family to keep him hidden until it was time. Sergei, who is the prince(and should be king) of the rival pride(of tigers) is sent to retrieve Jules and train him in his true being. Everyone needs Jules to defeat his power-crazed brother who is obsesses with immortality. His brother, with the help of someone close to Sergei,(you figure it out easily) steal young tigers and kills them.
He sees Jules as a threat and wants to use Jules for his own needs. In the end, you find out the truth about the cryptic writing.
I haven't read a shifter book in ages but I was drawn to Tiger Boys. What intrigued me, besides Sergei who is so gorgeous and engaging I fell for him big time, was this was that this the first shifter story where the shifter was completely unaware that shape shifters existed let alone that he was one. The concept of a human who has always been in human form having to learn how to shape shift was a character I could identify with, Jules had to come out twice once as gay and then as a tiger but it wasn't going to be easy. Sergei has a daunting task ahead of him when he agrees to attempt to teach shifting. He starts out with a little magic and then the best kind of magic happens Sergei falls in love. Is the feeling mutual? Will a man who has lived his whole young life as a human be able to shift let alone be able to become a king? Interesting questions and that is why you must read the book. A unique love story and adventure well told.
I really enjoy reading full novels as opposed to the novellas usually found in M/M fiction so I was excited to check this out. I haven't read this author before either but since it kept coming up in my recommendations what did I have to lose?
Time. Time is what I had to lose. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the story and at times it really held my interest. But that's the problem you see. It held my interest 'at times'.
The story is very well written and the characters are completely fleshed out. We spend the first 85% of the story with the two MC's at a compound where Jules learns about his heritage. It's all very lovely and idyllic, a vacation for the men to fall in love.
There are a couple of little break away scenes to the bad guy letting us know how truly bad he is and what lengths he is willing to go to for his plan. These are rather dry and don't convey the horror they should or could. They also don't impact our heroes with any real urgency to stop this mad man from world domination.
I kept checking my progress on how much farther I had to read expecting something dramatic to happen soon, with no luck. When we finally get to the drama everything is over quickly and everyone gets their happily ever after.
I'm left disappointed with the author for missing or not giving us any real drama or intrigue. Yes the writing was good in that the reader is able to imagine or visualize the MC's and their appearance, actions and feelings. The surroundings are also richly detailed but I don't care so much about Sergei's Jag when there is a bad guy murdering people.
There is one other book by this author I was interested in reading. I think I still might but before that I'm going to go back to one of my known authors for some real drama and action.
This is the first Linda Gayle I have read and to be honest, I was really sceptical about reading another paranormal/shapeshifter story, especially from someone who was new to me. Ended up? I really fell in love with this world she has created and I just Want. Some. More!!!!!
As the blurb reads, we have a young man by the name of Jules. A graduate student who works part time to survive the costs of bankruptcy-inducing school fees, he is the most surprised when he receives word from an antiques dealer that his grandmother had left him something. Thinking this may be his way out of financial and everlasting doom, he meets Sergei Sidorenko. Surprisingly, the man is not old enough to be an antique himself and was quite attractive. Best news of all, this man seems to be attracted to him. Yay!
Sergei is a prince of his clan. Coming from a long line of kings and princes, a horrible incident in the past left him with a sour taste with anything pertaining to his family. Or his legacy. Rejecting his world, he turns to the human world and succeeds in dealing with antiques. When his sister approaches him to beg for his help to help a young tiger raised as a human, his first reaction was to say no. When his sister plays the big sister card, he finally capitulates and agrees to meet the young 'human' and maybe train him. He meets Jules and all thoughts of decency goes out the window.
Sergei convinces Jules to be trained and even if it was a hard start, eventually, Jules gets the hang of this new and supernatural world he finds himself in. His sense of reality starts to shift and it was a difficult process. He not only had to deal with magic, he had to deal with shape-shifting too. To top it off, whom he knew as his family was not. Another complication: it was really difficult to think and maintain that his and Sergei's relationship remain platonic. Sergei had been told: Don't. Touch.
That was a tall order!
This was such a different and curious read. Yes, this is a plot that involves magic, shape-shifting and violence related to both, as well as the expected romance between two hunky, beautiful men, but that is where all similarities end.
This world is different.
Linda Gayle has created a world that is not wholly revealed here and screams of SERIES!!!!! where I would expect the rest of the mystery will be revealed. She, however, wrote it in such a way that just kept me reading till the wee hours of the morning. It has action, romance, violence, betrayal, romance and more twists and turns. And yes, romance.
Eventually this book ended, and there is a whole lot of stuff that are left unanswered. Instead of frustrating me, it made me even more curious and I just want that next installment now. When? I have no idea. I just hope soon.
Sergei should be the next ruler of the Tigers, but he doesn’t want the headaches. He agrees to help find the next “lost” prince and train him for the job. He tells Jules about an “inheritance” from his grandmother, a house and some other things he can’t tell him about, but needs to show him instead.
Once the two arrive at the inherited house in Connecticut Sergei shows Jules that he is not just another college kid, but actually a powerful Tiger-Shifter who is next in line to rule the clan against enemies who would steal their power.
Jules has to decide if this is the life for him after he decides that Sergei isn’t actually crazy. Sergei admits to finding Jules attractive but takes longer to admit that maybe they mean more to one another than mere hook-ups and has to decide if he can be a guy who commits.
Once they decide to break free of their past lives the enemy rears its head and the two have to work together or risk everything.
This was a free read on Kindle for me, but I would have bought it anyway. I really enjoyed Nancy Gayle’s shifter universe and thought the magic and the history she described were fascinating.
The love between Jules and Sergei is sweet if not overwhelming and the ending seemed to be a solid HEA even if it was still a bit tenuous by the end.
I highly recommend this book and give it a 4 of 5 hearts.
What struck me about both these books is the really creative world building. I love shifter stories, but finding a unique approach can be difficult at times. This world Gayle has built in Tiger Boys is really fascinating and unique. The families trace their ancestry back to ancient alchemists who learned to manipulate the elements. These experiments led to both their sorcery powers, as well as their shifting abilities. I loved how these two skills integrated together to create these characters with a long and powerful history. We learn about the other clans, the fall of other types of shifters, and so many details of their powers and magic. It is all incredibly well done, and I especially loved the play on the Russian lineage. These guys have their sexy accents, a love of the cold, and a connection to the old world and their family history that I really enjoyed.
4.75 Stars - This is not your average shifter book! I may have said it before, but it is definitely true for Tiger Boys. It has a unique take on shifter mythology, good character development and strong plot. With magic, alchemy, and intrigue it grabbed my attention and kept me reading well past my bed time.
Jules is a great character and I liked the idea of a vegetarian Tiger; it added some humor to balance out the bit of graphic gore contained in the book. Sergei was perfect as the conflicted teacher and wayward prince. Together the tension was high and when they finally consummated their attraction, the sex was hot.
Bottom line, the writing was good; the action, drama, and sex balanced; the story interesting. I highly recommend!
Ms. Gayle obviously has read up on her weretiger mythology, and chose the sorcerer path and a full Russian culture to go along with that. I love the new created mythology she came up with, which brought a suspenseful subplot to the book. It was very well done. I liked Sergei and the prince, and there was the added appeal of first time on top of everything else. The villain was just a little cartoonish, but I liked that he had an accomplice who was much more complicated in motivations and goals.
The magic was well done, although the part in the lake made me a little uncomfortable. There’s also a squick factor with the villain, but I won’t go into details. Overall, I enjoyed the book and it looks like there’s a cockatrice story I’ll have to check out as well.
Tigers AND magic! I really enjoyed the world building. The idea of the tiger shifters being sorcerers and having family hierarchies and kings was too cool. Sergei was a wonderfully complicated and conflicted character and I enjoyed seeing his relationship with Julian grow. The sexual tension and suspense was well done. All the plotting and scheming and double-crossing was very intriguing. At the heart of it, though, I really just connected with Julian and his resilience as his whole world shifted. He was a compelling character that I loved watching grow and strengthen. I can't wait to read more by this author.
3.5 out of 5 stars. While I enjoyed the story quite a lot, the lack of development in the relationship between Sergei and Jules is why I can't rate the story higher. I would have liked to see more interaction in them getting to know each other beyond just sex and Jules learning his heritage. Still a good story just lacked more oomph in the relationship side for me.
What a great shifter story. The journey of Jules and Sergei, both coming to certain things in their lives, keeps the reader engaged and wanting more. I started this morning and minus a small break, I finished it this afternoon. I just could not seem to put it down, which says a lot about Linda Gayle's story telling ability. A great read...
decent use of time. loved the world building and character development. usually shifter books tend towards instalove and a bit too much sweetness. this book was different. really liked Sergei. I'm glad a lot of the story focused on the characters development and he didn't just wake up with this latent talent but had to grow into it with training. nicely done.
Very entertaining... and sensual... story. I was hooked from the first chapter. The chemistry between Jules and Sergei is electric. Although there are not enough sex scenes, they are well done. The sexual tension leading up to them enhancing the eroticism. The plot kept me interested and had some good action with a satisfying ending. I will watch for more from this author.
A really good book. The author did a great job introducing a new world full of interesting characters. The love story was almost secondary to the main plot and that was refreshing. I wonder where else the author can take this story.
This book was just okay not great.. It could have been much better but it just fell flat...Anton could have been an awesome villain but he wasn't .. 3.5 stars
This was a really great book. I like how the romance between Sergei and Jules built up. I also found the magical element really cool too. If this becomes a series, I could definitely get into it.
