Didn't think I was going to finish this one today, but it was really engaging, so I said why not?
I enjoyed the first book when I read it last year, and I still like it a smidge better than I do this one, but Mayhem on the Marzipan Express was a fun listen either way.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who was getting strong Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express vibes from the plot, so if you like that book, you'll probably have a good time with this one as well.
I'd say it's less predictable than The Crime Brûlée Bake Off, and I liked the mystery for the most part, but I missed the baking taking centre stage. It was still present, there was just less of it, which makes sense, considering the setting.
The romance was nice, but I liked it better the first time around. We did get a sweet love confession here though, so it's not like there was no development, and I'm still rooting for them, which is all that matters.
I hope we'll get book three soon, that ending gave us all something to look forward to.

It was so fun to return to the world of Claire Walker and her culinary charm! And we have her handsome Viscount boyfriend, Jonny, on board for this journey as well!!! I definitely felt like we were stepping aboard The Orient Express with Agatha Christie a little bit and loved that feeling! Nothing like combining some murder mystery, culinary delights, a fun cast of characters and a train ride to get the little gray cells bouncing around! Hee Hee!!!

This was exactly what I needed right now and I loved it so much for that, haha! I really enjoyed the first book in this series but I LOVED this one! A mystery on a stranded train is always a good time (fictitiously, of course) and being back with Claire and Jonny made this one extra fun. (and the friendship with Alan? adorable!)

A Claire Walker Mystery always delivers a fun read. I liked this one even better than the first. Lately, I've said that about lots of second books. Mayhem on the Marzipan Express kept me hooked. It reminded me of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, yet with a Baker's touch.

Claire returns as the charming, down-to-earth amateur baker and an ex-contestant from Britain’s Battle of the Bakers. She and her handsome Viscount boyfriend, Jonny, join judge Alan Gables on the famed Scottish Mallaig Steam Express, with a name change for this event: Marzipan Express. It's for the chef's special food event with top fans. Claire is there for a romantic getaway with Jonny and to serve as Alan's sous chef.
Things go smoothly until the first body drops. Will it be the only one? Claire and Jonny turn detectives again, but Alan Gables emerges as the key suspect. They all work together to figure out who is really behind the attack.
Side note: The author writes in the preface, "And to David Tennant, who is the only person who could ever be Alan Gables in my head or in any adaptation. You hear that, executives? ONLY DAVID TENNANT. David, are you listening?" I adore David T. He was my favorite Doctor on Doctor Who. After reading that, I pictured David as Alan and heard his voice in every line.

This is book 2 in the series. It continues on from book 1. I would say you can read this one without reading book 1 but there will be some spoilers. Claire is back along with Johnathan. This time they are on a train. Which honestly was my favorite part about this story. Very much like Agatha Christie’s Murder On the Orient Express feels. I actually kept forgetting it was modern day. I loved Claire and Jonathan but felt their relationship wasn’t as strong in this one. Claire of course is there with her baking curse words again lol. The mystery part of the story was really good, although the motive was a little weak in my opinion. I still liked it though. The murder has some descriptive details. See more in content. Overall, I enjoyed the story and if you loved book one you will want to read this one too!

Claire and Jonny are back again on a VIP train trip honoring Claire’s mentor, Alan Gables. The baking is on point, but that’s the only part of the trip that goes smoothly. First there’s a dead body, then the train breaks down. Will Claire and Jonny be able to solve the case before the trip resumes and a murderer walks free?
I loved Claire and Jonny together and how they both balance each other out. The train setting was very reminiscent of Murder on the Orient Express. There were characters I loved to hate, and great growth for the characters I loved. This was a light mystery with a romance continued on from the first book. I recommend reading the series in order.

Mayhem on the Marzipan Express, turns a luxury train into a closed-circle mystery where “every passenger feels suspicious when there’s nowhere to escape.” I thoroughly enjoyed this gentle, warmhearted cozy mystery that is blended wonderfully with equal parts of fun baking banter, romantic interplay, and playful sleuthing all aboard a picturesque train journey. While the mystery serves as a fun engine, it’s the relationships and culinary charm that give the story its cozy appeal for me! Also, the fun recipes added in was an extra sweet touch of goodness. Worth the read!❤️

This was a perfect continuation from book one! I would definitely recommend reading book one first - this is a different murder mystery, but everything else picks up right where the first ended.
The romance between Claire & Jonny is still the sweetest slow burn. 🩷 Some challenges pop up in this one between them, but I love how they work everything out.
It was a bit of a slower read for me, I struggled to follow the murder mystery part at times. It was written very well, just a little more confusing to me than the first one. I loved all the Scottish vibes! It really brought the story together, in a new atmosphere.
I know I'll definitely reread both books in this series at some point, highly recommend!!

Overall, not as great as the first book in the series. This one had some great humor in it with the interactions between the three main characters, but the story line and execution of the plot really fell flat for me. Too many convenient "ah-ha" moments or lack of protocol being followed after murders occurring that, I'm sorry, but even the conductor and other train executives on board would have followed to make sure that an amateur, self-appointed sleuth would not be allowed to go and touch and interfere with. Not to mention the relationship drama Claire incites with Jonny throughout the book. Plus the whole "baking swears" and "tearms of endearment" didn't work as well in this book as they did in the first. There are just simply way too many of them. If the author stuck to a chosen couple, it would detract a lot less from the rest of the book. The murderer and reasons for the murders also fell flat for me and was just too much of a stretch, not realistic. This second book in this series, unfortunately, didn't work for me as well as the first one did. I am apparently in the minority for this opinion (looking at the other reviews), but the plot and execution of the first book in the series was stronger than they were in this one. I still enjoyed the main characters and, as I said, the interactions and humor between Alan, Claire, and Jonny, and I'm really glad Alan returned as a character, and not just Claire and Jonny, but the plot and other details in this book didn't quite work for me. The included recipes do sound yummy and tie in with the foods mentioned throughout the book. I actually enjoyed the kitchen/baking scenes of the book the most and the sleepover in their train compartment and the developing friendship between Alan and Jonny, but, for me, Alan's romantic drama was not developed enough throughout the book and just felt thrown in by the end. I'll continue reading further books in the series as they are released, but this one didn't have the strengths of the first book, for me.

Crepes Alive! This was another fun read by Rebecca Connolly! Agatha Christie fans rejoice!
If you like Scottish vibes in a contemporary setting with lots of baking involved, murder to solve, all while being trapped on a train, then this is the book for you!

I enjoyed this one a lot. I found Jonny and Claire even more endearing in this next adventure of theirs. However, Claire comes to have some insecurities regarding her relationship with him. (Their romance is continued from book 1, so while this one can be read as a standalone, many references to their relationship and things that happen in the previous book are discussed and mentioned.)
But their love confession scene had me melting like fondue in a chocolate fountain.
I loved trying to solve the mystery of the murders with them, the jokes, the prank they pull on Jonny, baking delicious foods (I definitely want to try the recipes found in the back of the book), and the trifle conversation Alan and Claire had was the icing on the cake!
I do recommend this one to any cozy mystery lovers who also enjoy delighting in romantic tension on the side.

Holy tartan tarte tatin! Claire and Jonny are back with another mystery and this time they're stuck on board a train with a killer! This one reminded me of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, with the train being immovable and everyone stuck onboard.
Claire Walker, baker extraordinaire and accidental sleuth, is hoping for a relaxing, romantic getaway with her boyfriend, Jonny. Instead, she finds herself trying to solve a murder just moments into their journey. The Mallaig Steam Express—temporarily rechristened “The Marzipan Express” for an exclusive culinary experience—sets the stage perfectly but it all goes off the rails when a body turns up. (see what I did there?)
I loved Claire's wit and how she puts the information together. I also loved that Claire and Jonny's relationship has progressed since the first book. He really is in love with Claire and has also started using baking swear words like her. It was fun getting to see Chef Alan Gables again—he's quite the character!

I loved Claire's wit and how she puts the information together. I also loved that Claire and Jonny's relationship has progressed since the first book. He really is in love with Claire and has also started using baking swear words like her. It was fun getting to see Chef Alan Gables again—he's quite the character!

I LOVED this story! The snark, banter and funny moments were my favorite and I loved the secondary storyline too. The mystery was great and I absolutely devoured this book. I read an ARC of this book but I will be buying a finished copy for my favorites shelf. I need lots more books in this series!

I love her books. This was a fun Christmas read. I loved they were stranded on the train. I loved the premise. I loved that I didn't guess whodunnit. I loved that it is clean. Can't wait for the next installment.

While I very much like the characters in this series, as in the first book the “villain” was very easily guessed. This made the second half of the book quite slow.

3.75 stars.This was one of those books that I enjoyed while I read it, but promptly forgot everything that happened as soon as it was over. Our MCs are back from book 1, but baking is only tangentially involved in this one. I enjoyed the sleuthing, but the culprit was pretty obvious from the very beginning.

Okay, I barely know what to say about this one. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, and was excited to learn it was now a series. And admittedly, the premise sounded interesting. Claire (recently off a GBBO knock-off) and Jonny (her Viscount boyfriend she met on the show) are going to be on a special train to Scotland that has a car set up for one of the judges on the show, Alan. Alan has asked Claire to help him cook pastries for the guests on the special train. Fun, right?
Well, no. Quickly there's a death on the train that turns out to be a murder. Part of the deal with the special train was everyone had to turn in their phones (convenient). Claire and Jonny begin to investigate the death, and seemingly within minutes Alan disappears. But they don't worry about the missing Alan at all.
And Jonny is now doing the swearing using baking terms that Claire does. They alternate the terms regularly, and it just started taking up more and more of the page.
I really didn't care who the murderer was, and just felt frustrated with much of this. I'll admit, I skimmed a lot of pages to get to the end to see who did it. It made sense, but again, I didn't especially care. It seems Claire and Jonny are now going to the Isle of Skye with Alan (yes, he finally reappeared). Will I read that one? I doubt it, or if I do, it will be a long time in the future.

This was a good sequel to The Crime Brûlée Bake Off. Make sure you read that book first. The swearing with baking terms was really weird and a bit annoying but the story was captivating and there was some good character development. The ending had an interesting twist. Definitely worth the read.

This book was so delightful! I adore Claire Walker and her insatiable need for answers, how she cares about other people, her baking, and also her “baking swears.” There was less baking in this book than in the first, but still enough to satisfy my love for food in books. And watching her and Jonny work together again to solve the mystery was so fun.
The relationship between Claire and Jonny is so sweet. I absolutely love them! And I love how the relationship developed and shifted and grew over the course of this book. Jonny is so good to Claire. His devotion is swoon-worthy and the way he takes times for her, sacrifices his preferences for her (hello socializing!), and works to reassure her is just delicious. Also the kissing in this book will make any romance lover’s toes curl. Those kisses!
It was so fun seeing Alan Gables and getting to know him better. I *loved* how this one ended but I’m not saying a word because it will give too much away. Let’s just say I hope we get a lot more of Alan and his surprise in future books. Other things I loved: the old-fashioned train; the mystery and whodunit feel; the twists I never saw coming; the mouthwatering food descriptions and recipes (now I really want to try potato scones); the kids; the colorful characters that make up the train passengers; and the setting. It’s Scotland. We don’t see a lot of it, but I still loved it.
It’s just a fabulous book. If you like mysteries, baking, or toe-curling kisses, give this book a try. It is the second book in the series, but can easily be read as a standalone.

This vacation on a train offers a captivating murder mystery without sensationalism that will retain your interest until the very end, much like the works of Agatha Christie and the charm of The Great British Bake Off. I'm enamored with quotes such as “What the custard?”, “Crêpes alive”, “Did it make sense? Not a teaspoon.”, and “The Scot remained by the stove and dutifully turned scones while looking as though someone had stolen his kilt and murdered his alpaca.” The characters' charm and the Scotland train setting make the story utterly enchanting. The historical context is skillfully integrated, enriching the narrative. This book is masterfully crafted, distinct, and utterly delightful. This cozy mystery seamlessly blends amateur sleuthing with culinary pleasures, romance, and suspense, all set on the captivating Mallaig Steam Express. Claire Walker is a compelling protagonist whose baking expertise and astute instincts make her a pleasure to follow. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making the suspense gripping. The narrative is well-paced, with unexpected twists and turns that will keep you enthralled, and the romance and humor add a touching warmth. While some elements may be predictable, the characters' depth and the narrative's intricate details stand out. I was lucky enough to take a trip by train just over a year ago and could clearly picture the goings on with this romantic journey on the Marzipan Express, temporarily named for chef Alan. Claire Walker is off on a trip with Jonny and right off, they discover a deceased person. The mystery, food, and insecurities abound as this mystery fights to be solved.
I liked Claire and Jonny, and self-doubts they each experienced felt real and relatable. I was there for ALL the food this cozy mystery had to offer and loved trying to make all the connections before it was too late.
I enjoyed the narrator and the audio brought this one to life. A fun setting and an interesting cast of characters made this one a delight.

This was such a fun addition to this culinary mystery series. I loved the friendships between Claire, Allen, and Johnathan. Claire is invited to help prepare food on a culinary train ride tribute to chef Alan Gables. What should be a fun adventure, turns into a stressful situation as a dead body is found and the train breaks down in an area with no reception.
It was really fun trying to figure out who the murder was. My favorite part was the friendship between characters. I loved getting perspectives from Claire and Johnathan as they figure out the seriousness of their relationship. Such a fun book. If you like a cozy mystery, this might be for you!

Very fun sequel and development of beloved characters. The killer wasn’t as obvious as the first book so that was fun to try to figure out. But man… Becky can write REALLY annoying characters. I don’t remember the last time I was so annoyed with someone as I was with Felicity. So great job! Here’s to hoping for another mystery!

I enjoyed reading this murder mystery even without a couple ingredients missing to make it absolutely delicious. It can be read as a standalone but is continued from book one. Claire has brought her baking, and boyfriend, onto a train to help her idol with a special event. Our MC's relationship doesn't seem as strong because they are both questioning if they are right for each other. The main chef goes missing and Claire stumbles onto a crime scene. They race to solve the murder on a sabotaged train and Claire is threatened. It was a fun mystery although a little weak and the cooking puns were a bit much. Overall, I liked it.

This follow up to The Crime Brûlée Bake Off didn’t hit quite the same for me. They’re cozy baking-themed mysteries with a mild romcom storyline. It was alright but not my cup of tea, despite being inspired by the Great British Baking Show. I liked the baking references and the idea of a cooking show judge hosting a train journey with fans.
The banter in this sequel wants to be witty but came off more catty, and our MC Claire instigates drama with her boyfriend Jonny out of insecurity and poor communication. I find drama & cattiness tedious & off putting. The lack of protocols when a crime is suspected also bothered me. I do really like the characters overall, and I’ll continue reading the series as it’s released.

It’s back to baking and romance and murder mystery solving, but on a train, as we return to the almost too sweet romance of Claire and Jonny. At first glance, they seem like a mismatched pair. Claire is an unglamorous amateur baker who gets the opportunity of a lifetime to bake with one of the harshest judges on Britain’s Battle of the Bakers, on which she was a contestant in the first book, on a tribute train ride dubbed the Marzipan Express. Jonny is the Viscount Colburn, a handsome eligible bachelor despite his family’s dwindling income and historical family scandal that was uncovered in the first book, and his intense dislike of people. Unless it’s Claire. He’s so crazy about Claire that his terms of endearment for her involve pastries. But they work well together solving crimes, and who wouldn’t jump at the chance to travel up to the Scottish Highlands on the Marzipan Express?
Mayhem on the Marzipan Express is basically a locked room mystery where the title is clearly a twist on an Agatha Christie one, but the murder mystery is much simpler with a less elaborate cast of suspects. Here, Claire is baking with Alan Gables, award winning pastry chef who has been dubbed the Marzipan King. He’s notorious for not liking anyone, but he likes Claire and invites her to bake with him on the train ride. But someone’s unhappy, and it’s more than just Claire when she realizes journalist Felicity Farrow has her sights set on Jonny. Of course she gets it. Felicity is gorgeous and would look great on his arm. But Claire has other things to worry about, especially when a dead body materializes and Alan vanishes and the train inexplicably stalls due to a mechanical failure that can’t be immediately fixed because of an approaching storm. With less than twenty-four hours to find the murderer before another body drops and the suspect vanishes forever, Claire and Jonny have their work cut out for them. Oh, and there are no cell phones allowed on this train.
As cozy mysteries go, I found this one to be simple and I picked out the culprit early on. They did well covering their tracks, but it also felt a little too obvious. Fortunately, there were other things to keep me occupied, like how jealous Claire was, the lack of communication between Claire and Jonny, a bit of romance in the cards for Alan, and plenty of baking. The terms of endearment Jonny used for Claire were a little over the top to me, but it makes sense as she’s a baker. It was just a little odd how he was always calling her an eclair.
Anyways, I did like how Mayhem on the Marzipan Express focused a little more on the mystery and threw in some fun monkey wrenches. I loved watching Claire and Jonny have to navigate and piece things together with no cell phones and train cars loaded with people who are upset Alan isn’t showing his face, mostly because he spends a good chunk of the book missing. It was also fun to watch them have to soothe the ruffled feathers of the people who paid to be on the train to meet Alan and eat the things he baked, except it’s Claire who ends up doing most of the baking and food serving. It was nice to see them face some challenges, so it was a little disappointing I fingered the suspect early on.
But Claire and Jonny were sweet without being overly sweet this time around. It was less fun dealing with their insecurities. After months together, I would have expected they’d have some arguments and heart to heart conversations, or maybe both of them are just that insecure. I hated getting roped into their devolving loops, but it was sweet to see them make up. Outside of their romance and their doom loops, I really enjoyed watching them try to figure out who did it, how, and why. I loved that all of it made sense, and I really liked watching them work. I did feel they didn’t spend as much time actually trying to solve the murder as they did baking and dealing with people, but all the elements felt better balanced in this installment.

Of course, the Highlands were all outside and we didn’t get to go outside, but I liked the tense atmosphere in the train cars. Regardless, I loved this locked room setting, and even enjoyed reading about what Claire was whipping up in the train’s kitchen.

The standout element, without a doubt, is the characters—especially Claire, Jonny, and Alan. Claire initially comes across as timid, but she proves herself to be strong-minded and outspoken when it truly matters. Jonny is a fascinating character with his antisocial yet undeniably charming personality. And Alan remains wonderfully mysterious—I won’t say more, as I don’t want to spoil anything.
The “bakish” language completely charmed me. Expressions like “Crêpes alive!”, “What the actual croissants…,” endearments such as “ma crème” and “Éclaire,” and even naming Alex’s assistant “Flaky Pastry” added so much humor and warmth. I was fully immersed and could almost smell the pastries Alan and Claire were concocting.
