The Lightbender

Rate this book
Fifteen-year-old Zophar Lightbender is the first kid in history to travel to outer space – but tragedy strikes during the mission, and he sees his parents for the last time.

When he wakes, he finds himself in an advanced, futuristic tower filled with talking robots, holographic screens, and mind-boggling technologies. Only with the help of the an impish, super-intelligent girl named Aiya does he start to learn what really happened on that fateful day in space.

They uncover a sinister plot to dominate the lives of everyone they care about, and Zophar and Aiya must use their intelligence and wit – not to mention a persnickety robot, an overeager social media expert, and a wise teenage humanist – to protect their loved ones.

This is the tale of The Lightbender.

Techie, trekker (trekkie!), geek, nerd and dork all in one. When not spending his days fixing other people's computer problems, you can find him playing video games or trying to win the Internet. Equally fond of Texas and New York, the voices in his head argue about which path down yellow woods is best. He likes cheese. He REALLY likes cheese. Someday he will own robots that make cheese for him.

Too often speculative fiction, even that which is aimed at a younger audience, eschews accessibility in favor of the glorious operas to be found within the mental work required to unravel the novel's complexity.

Gordon pens a touching, near-future tome here that is certain to delight genre fans and new readers alike. Certainly his themes of tenacity in friendship and faith belie the occasional, almost cliche jabs at the nanny state.

I will read Lightbender again with my sons. That is as powerful an endorsement as I can give.

I need an option for like 20 stars. That needs to be a thing.

I got a bit slowed down by the theoretical physics, even though it was nicely explained at a lower level. (This book is a YA grades 6-10 maybe.) The pace picked up in the middle and ended very well. A fun easy read for Sci-fi fans.
