Drifting Into You #3

Shifting Gears

Rate this book
Find out what happened to AJ during the timeframe of Feint in the Drifting into You trilogy with this standalone spinoff novel.

AJ

Walking away from Rosalie Wells was hard, but she deserved a life that was free from the dark shadows that would always follow me. So, I said goodbye and boarded a one-way flight to Japan.

Here, life is a cycle of meaningless routines. By leaving LA, I thought I could let her go, but my mind always drifts back to the woman I left behind.

Until the night I meet Raven. A woman whose eyes lock with mine and mirror my strength and pain. I’ll never stop loving Rosalie. But maybe, with Raven, I can find something worth holding on to again.

Raven

After a tragedy forced my hand, my destiny became sealed. To protect my sisters, I’ll do anything—even marry one of the most dangerous Yakuza leaders in the city. Soon, fate will lock me in a cage.

As my last days of freedom slip away, a man with a battered heart and haunted eyes shows me a glimpse of what life could be. Maybe falling for him will be the most reckless decision of my life.

But AJ gives me a taste of something I thought I’d lost forever—hope. I just have to decide if trying to mend his shattered heart is worth risking everything. Even our lives.

Shifting Gears.... I don't know if I love or hate you lol. Part of the Drifting Into You series, Shifting Gears takes place at the same time as Feint, only this time we're getting AJ's POV from his time in Japan. I was really excited about getting AJ's POV covering his break up with Rosalie and his thoughts/feelings/ and what he was up to in Japan that leads him back to LA. What I didn't expect was to broken... and irritated with AJ LOL. Or maybe I did, the men in this world tend to piss me off sometimes ha.

We left off in Tandem with AJ breaking up with Rosalie, at the urging of her father, and leaving LA for Japan. Shifting Gears picks up with AJ landing in Japan, starting to work for a shop that Rosalie's father set him up on. He's sad, missing Rosalie, and bored. But a chance encounter with a woman named Raven has him thinking maybe things can turn around in Japan.

Raven has an arranged marriage with the head of the local organized crime boss. She's out to save her sisters but her fiance plays dirty. Raven and AJ quickly begin using each other and bond over their trauma. Only, Raven's fiance figures out their secret and heads will roll....

I won't post spoilers here... but let's just say I didn't see something coming. Completely threw me! My head is still processing. I will say this... AJ.... I want to love you. But you're a player lol. I know we're suppose to believe you love Rosalie and everything but I have a hard time believing you sometimes. Also, your relationship choices are questionable for me. However, I did enjoy the tie-in to the end of Feint!

Overall, I did like the story. I really did like seeing AJ in Japan and him missing Rosalie. I just kinda wish there was more of that emotion.

Shifting Gears follows the story of AJ after he leaves LA and the love of his life. This story takes place across the world and shows AJs character evolve after losing the one women who stole his heart, Rosalie.

AJ heads to take the job that Rosalie's dad offers when he leaves LA. & honestly, AJs character doesn't really peak until later in the book after another loss. I feel like he hit the bottom in this book after having a discussion with Raven's sister. Sometimes we need to fight for who we love. Anyway, reading this after Tandem was great because I won't wonder what happened when AJ left.

This fast paced story fills the gaps of where AJ went, what happened and how he filled his time. To wrap this up, I enjoyed the book a lot. The only thing I didn't like was how AJ jumped from woman to woman but I understand why he did it.. When we can't have what we really want we supplement it with everything else.

Thank you to Naughty Nook PR and the author for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

The perfect addition to this series. I knew it would be 5 stars before I started. I have read so many books and I can honestly say this is probably my favourite series thus far for sure !!

I loved heading AJs side of the series and what went going on while he was away. It meshed so well with the others as his lifestyle remains the same rather than being something complete unrelated.

I also loved how we got to see a more emotional side of AJ and got into more of his thoughts and feelings it was really great.

Like the other 3 books this one just played like a movie in my head. So easy to read so engaging and suspenseful and sexy. It reminded me of Tokyo Drift (Fast and Furious) and I loved that. I’m not a car girlie but when I tell you this series is so good I mean it.

I’m so sad this book is over I wanted it to keep going and I want more and more from these characters.

1 million stars
And 4/5 for spice

Thank you once again R.Snow for the ARC!

I was nervous to read about AJs time away from Rosalie. But it was amazing! It really just added a layer of his personality and made me love him More!!

AJ never wanted to leave and really thought he made the best choice. He tried to lose himself in a new town and settle for an awesome girl who made him forget . But when things go bad with her he also will not let it go.

And a friend helps him realize all is not lost and maybe it’s time to go home. This series is awesome and I loved each book and layer of the story it created!!

Wow, amazing. Every chapter had something going on, definitely had me saying one more chapter every single time. It was my first read of R.Snow and this book had me really wanting to read the rest of her books.
Shifting gears had great spice, things I definitely didn’t see coming and lots of moments where I was on the edge of my seat. This book had me constantly thinking about it while doing day to day jobs 😅

I have just finished this ARC read, and unfortunately, I found this a little dull. It had such a potential story, but I just feel like it was repetitive, and my God, why did the MMC have to finish every sentence with baby or baby girl?! it made me cringe. It felt like the plot could have been developed more, and the boring sex scenes less. Not for me sorry.

This book put me through every emotion in the spectrum of emotions, and honestly it’s hard to put into words how I feel about this but I’ll try. The amount of shit this book me through was insane, because honestly I was just very confused through most of it in the romance department but more on that later. This plot was amazing though, really intense and exciting, I’ve never read a Yazuka / Japanese mafia romance before and I loved it, especially the underground fighting element of it. AJ is an champion LA fighter who moved to Japan after putting his girlfriend Rosalie in a dangerous position, and meets Raven, a dojo owner who is in a dire situation and needs hip help. The plot twists in this book had me stunned, I had to put the book down for a second. In all honesty the one in the middle of the book got me the hardest though and I cried so hard. This ending is more of an open ending that leads to the next book so yeah I definitely want to read it. It’s more of prequel than part of the actual series. These are just some personal preferences, but I hate romantic confusion, like I genuinely need to know who the fmc or mmc ends up with. I also hate it when the the mmc sleeps with someone who isn’t the person they end up with, yes he has great chemistry with some characters in this book but looking back it feels wrong knowing he was love with someone else the entire time??? However while it kind of icks me it plays a major role in this book and it makes sense. The amount of false hope in this book is insane, this book ruined me, I was crying and so emotional through a lot of it. I loved this so much, I’m still a little iffy on AJ, but I loved all the other characters and give this a 4.5/5

Finally we get AJs story from his time in Toyo’s and holy freaking airball did R. Snow deliver!

AJ is coming off the low point of his life by leaving the first girl he’s ever loved behind to keep her safe, trying to start a new life in Japan, he falls back into old habits and old ways, thinking it will help him forget Rosalie. But it doesn’t, the women he meets in Tokyo help him not only see he’s running from his past but that that past is something he should grow for, change for, and go back for.

AJ isn’t a perfect character and that’s why I love him so much, he’s flawed, makes dumb decisions, and while I know some readers love the perfect book boyfriend experience, AJ is a book boyfriend who might not be perfect but he’s perfect for her and that’s what matters to me. I also LOVE the nickname he uses they always make me melt.

And Raven and Sydney were such good FMCs in this book I really hope to see them in a future book!

P.S. this damn man in the stripped suit is going to mean something one day, I can feel it 😅

Talk about entanglements our boy AJ sure knows how to stumble into them or as fate may have it fall into his lap.

Leaving behind his past and his first love, to ensure her safety, even at the cost of breaking her heart, AJ relocates to Japan
to start a new life. Oh boy does he find it!

AJ is smart, good looking but also unknowingly lethal. His favorite phrase with the ladies is “Baby” talk about cringey… sorry just wasn’t my vibe but his flirtatious antics are at times comical and sincere. His sincerity one night changes his life and that of Raven, “forced” to be the wife to one of the most dangerous Yakuza leaders. His entanglements are worth noting…such a Casanova! Haha!

This story takes you on high intense ride. Full of emotions, family Loyalties, action packed drama, and deep losses. The jaw dropper! definitely didn't see coming moments, where I was like no way!! Giving way to twisty, edgy characters with elements of passion and murderous intentions. Shifting gears had some serious sass!

This was a great spin off to Tandem. After reading the series…R. Snow left a lot of questions in the air as to what happened to AJ while he was away. You can see the character development of AJ as a man who knows what love is because he has experienced that with Rosalie. I felt bad for Raven but I’m so glad she had Sydney to redeem her death and their family name. Just throwing it out there but I want to know who the man was that Sydney saw and what happens to Sydney after AJ leaves.

Truly a 6 star read✨🖤

I’m not going to lie and say this book didn’t make me cry because it absolutely did!😭 but it’s one of those books that’ll make you cry but you love it so much. So, In the end it’s truly a 6 star read. I loved AJ, Raven, and Sydney and I love the locations in the book. Of course you’ll need to read the next one to truly finish AJ’s story. I suggest you pick up this book if you want some Really good writing, amazing characters, side characters, plot, lots of spice, and book that just might make you cry🖤 I look forward to reading the next book in this series! Tysm for sending me an arc of this book!! 🫶
I absolutely loved reading what happened with AJ while he was in Japan after the events that happened in Tandem led him to move away.
In comes Raven, with bad things and people surrounding her. Everything she did was to protect her younger sisters, Sydney and Regan.
AJ, nicknamed “Hero” by Raven after their first encounter, starts developing feelings for her and that’s when everything goes to hell.

This book was so so good, as is everything else by R. Snow. 💕🫶

AJ left LA to protect Rosaline from the enemies he has made. He goes to Japan and discovers that you can not run from who you are.

AJ is board with his new life and runs into Raven. She reminds him of the love of his life. After a tragic night, he is left wondering what happened until Sydney appears needing his help.

I love AJ protectiveness and desperate drive to help Raven and Syndey. I appreciate his idea that leaving will protect Rosaline. I stuggleba little with how much of a playboy he is.

Raven and Syndey are strong women that force AJ to face his fears and confront them with the same ferociousness that he faces all their problems.

This is an action packed book!

I found myself lost at times, I haven’t read the other books in the series and I wasn’t sure if I needed too. I for sure want to read the rest of the series!!

AJ is sweet and protective over those he cares for. Although I did find him immature at times in the beginning but he was better at the end.

Raven and Sydney are both badass in their own ways. I love both of them so much.

There are some spicy scenes that add to the plot line!

Total redemption story for AJ for me as I was not a fan of him in Tandem. Loved him here though. As well as both FMCs, so strong and fierce.
This is a spin off of the Drifting Into You trilogy. I recommend reading those first, actually the first two (Tandem and Feint), then this book, then continue onto the third, Chasing.

When I heard that Snow was writing the book on AJ when he was in Tokyo, I was ecstatic!!! i feel like this book showed me more of AJ’s personality and how if you’re a person he cares about, he always has your back!

I loved Raven and Sydney in this book and how much they showed AJ that they see him more than just some guy who does underground fighting and works in a car garage. It was so sweet of Sydney to push AJ to overcome his fear of being rejected by Rosalie 🫶🏻

I've been wanting this book since finishing Tandem because your girl was dying to find out what happened to AJ all that time away from his girl Rosalie. So when I was told by R. Snow herself that she was giving us this book I'm like Ma'am give it to me now.
And oh did she deliver. With delicious tension and spice, I ate this book up. Not to mention the emotional rollercoaster I was thrown on. The amount of tears I shed could've filled a bucket because I'm warning you ahead of time you're gonna cry. And that ending had me screaming because our boy finally came to his senses iykyk.
This was an absolute binge-worthy read and I can’t recommend it enough.

A spin off from the Drifting into you trilogy where we get AJ's side of the story once he moved to Japan.

Only, I felt this was more about Raven (the girl AJ meet and get involved with) having AJ just as a supportive character.

But even then, Raven's story was exciting to read. I was shocked at some points on the story that definitely didn't see them coming.

In general, it was a good book, but again, I would've like to have a little more about his break up with Rosalie.

R. Snow did it again with Shifting Gears! The way I absolutely gobbled this book up was sickening, I am talking up til 4 am because I was like 'I'm almost done, can't stop now!' I have read all three other books in this series, this one is more like a standalone in that series as you don't necessarily need to read the others but in my opinion, it makes the impact of the main characters story lines so much better and intense. I have been an AJ fan since Tandem, when his red flags were bright but in my eyes, they weren't really red flags but more like confusion about love and commitment and also being a man who was a kid raised on the streets.

That being said I really enjoyed reading about what AJ was up to during the Feint books storyline that follows Rosalie. I loved the cultural background sprinkled into Shifting Gears as it takes place in Tokyo. I really loved the introduction to Raven and how they both came together and bonded over their struggles and trauma, and I feel like Raven gave AJ some type of motivation in life while he was in Tokyo, which he very much did need. You get to see AJ back in the underground fighting scene but in Tokyo. This book had me on an emotional rollercoaster from the beginning to the end.

This book you experience loss in more ways than one, but you also get answers, conclusions, and remarkable characters intertwining. I am so grateful to Sydney, who in the end encourages AJ to follow his heart and head back to LA to the woman he loves.

I don't want to give much away in regard to the entire storyline so I will leave it at that. Absolutely read this!

R.SNOW, the author you are, you had my crying on page one!!! PAGE ONE, THE WHOLE FIRST CHAPTER HAD ME REFEELING THE END OF TANDEM. That being said, I loved this book, honestly I couldn't get enough of it, it was amazing seeing a different side of AJ, and seeing the reason why he acted the way he did in Chasing. You gave me new chacters to love and I loved them and hated a few of them, some of them did need to be set of fire and thrown down some stairs. Raven, my sweet girl I wanted to jump into the book and hug her so bad, along with her sisters. Sydney.....my girl she had my dying a few times, and honestly I loved her she when she came into the story she gave a turn in the best way. I can't wait to see if we get another book maybe staring her, wink wink, I honestly can't wait to see what else you have for us in this universe. I can't wait to reread this book while reading the trilogy to see it play out in timeline order. Also may have to go read Chasing again cause I'm missing AJ again. But, seriously I love this books and I can't wait for more.

First off I just want to say this story was absolutely beautiful!

This is a interconnected standalone so you can either read it before or after the Drifting Into You series, but it does happen during the same time period as Feint so it gives you a little more insight into AJ’s POV!

Raven and AJ’s dynamic is absolutely heart wrenching and sexy all at the same time! They choose to be vulnerable with each other, but then you’ve got the absolute sexiest, most arousal-filled nights imaginable!

I’m not going to say much more as I could go on forever but just know this book is totally worth every word written! I laughed, I screamed, I cried. Shifting Gears may not sound like much but it’s definitely something that hits you when you least expect it to! You will pick it up and won’t want to put it down! Snow takes you on a rollercoaster and you better hang on cause it’s a rough ride. I hope you give it a shot and love it just as much as I did! 💜💜

Okay byeee 🥰

You’re entire socks will be blown when you read this and you will never regret it. If you’ve read the other books, you know EXACTLY why. Because AJ….He is such a hottie it makes no sense. What I loved about Shifting Gears is that we get to see a side of him that’s different. AJ is still missing Rosalie, so he’s having feelings that he’s never experienced. I honestly enjoyed seeing him from this different perspective.

Now listen….AJ is still AJ and we adore him lol in this book he is absolutely still unhinged in the best way. lol

The action in this book is fun, and the DRAMAAAAAA ATE IT UP! I was yelling, screaming and I almost threw my kindle multiple times. Okay…i did lol but that’s because I’m team Rosalie all day. I get it…my boy AJ needed to see the light lol But this book is fun! And the conflict is so raveling that you’re sitting on the edge of your seat. You definitely will have your world rocked.

And of course…..i can’t wait for more!

"I'm going to hell for thinking of him in ways I shouldn't. But I'm probably going to hell anyways for what I plan on doing to kaito"

Honestly I wasn’t totally convinced that I would finish this book. I hadn’t read the Drifting Into You series which made me confused in the beginning of the book. That being said, I LOVED IT. R. Snow managed to make me feel so many emotions. Sadness, spice, anxiety, joy? I felt all of them. The relationship between Raven and AJ was so unique and wonderful.

While you don’t have to, I suggest reading the Drifting Into You series to understand the relationship between AJ and Rosalie first.

This was an enjoyable read that explores themes of grief, longing, and the fight for freedom—both emotionally and literally. I appreciated watching AJ’s growth as he tries to move forward from his past, even if he’s still haunted by what (and who) he left behind. His connection with Raven was heartfelt; two broken people finding hope in each other when their worlds feel like cages.

Since I haven’t read the other books in the series, I wasn’t as emotionally invested in AJ’s story as I think I would’ve been with more background. But I still enjoyed this look at two people trying to break out of their self-made prisons and find something real.

~ arc review ~

hum… i wasn’t privy to the fact that this is a middle book in a series so imagine my surprise when it was announced that one of the tropes was “second chance” but the second chance happens at 99% of the book and meanwhile the mmc fucks random ass girls? 😵‍💫

this was mainly a book for the mmc to whine and be a little fuck boy and calling every woman “baby” or “baby girl” which ew.

no thank you.

oh forgot to add the fact that he doesnt like the japanese girls bc they have no curves 🙃 so. there’s that.
