"Moomin is about freedom, tolerance, and optimism amid frustration, loss, and fear." —Modern Painters Moomin: The Complete Lars Jansson Comic Strip, Volume Ten welcomes readers back to the beloved world of Moominvalley, where pancakes and jam are a perfectly acceptable supper and wealthy aunts can be altogether too fierce to handle. The tenth volume of Tove and Lars Jansson's classic comic strip features the macabre and hilarious "Moomin and the Vampire" and "The Underdeveloped Moomins." Together, the four stories in this collection display the poignancy, whimsy, and philosophical bent that constitute the Moomins' enduring appeal.
The end of a long, strange trip. Tove Jansson was the author of the first five books and her brother Lars was the author of the next five. His style then grew into a remarkably different one that still retained a lot of the original charm, but was written as funny little political satires and social critiques. As a brother/sister duo of cartoonists, their styles have a sort of male/female difference in both their ink pen artwork and senses of humor. I quite liked all of the Lars Jansson Moomin stips and they had a certain ebb and flow, where it was a bi-weekly strip and you could feel Lars Jansson get bored with one idea, start goofing around, and then look for a way out until he finds another one. Moomin Papa becomes the dominant character over time, and it is often very dry and charming. Overall, a great read; the first five volumes are classics, and the second five are good but the artwork is largely significantly worse. I'd be entirely open to starting right back at the top someday.
Another enjoyable book with Lars Jansson's Moomin strips. Both "Moomin and the TV" and "The Underdeveloped Moomins" are good examples of the whimsical and slightly satirical way in which he allows the Moomin family to relate to the world. The two other stories are more whimsical than satirical, but they are still entertaining.
The final Lars Jansson book (unless volume 11 ever comes out?) is ok but Lars's Moomin comics tend to rely more on gags and new characters than Tove's did. It's still fun, and often quite funny, but I think I preferred some of the previous volumes overall.
Mistakenly read this ahead of vol.9 (thanks to a mistake in my library's call #) so this is the last instalment of the comic strip. Particularly enjoyed Moomin and the vampire.
