This book is full of traditional Native American tales of the Abnaki. It was a quick read. The tales are those Molly Spotted Elk was able to get out of her elders when she was young. She paid for the tales by doing jobs.
Contemporary people may consider this a book of faerie tales. I would hope that the dignity with which the stories have been told for centuries might endure when readers work their way through the book, rich in the "flavor" of indigenous peoples lives. A book to read slowly and hold close.
Read this to Jr and we enjoyed the entertaining tales. Many were on the downer side of things with not so happy endings. Interesting to compare and contrast with other similar stories we've read from other cultures.
