I couldn't do it. I really tried to like this book. With a name like Obsession, I was chomping on the bit thinking it would be racy and hot. It wasn't exactly what I had in mind. I think it has potential, but the writing didn't flow smoothly. The sentences were too precise - "I ran home from school. I opened the door and entered my house. I went up to my bedroom. I laid down on my bed." Most people don't talk like this and although you want to be proper to a certain extent, it has to feel natural.

Now, here is what bothered me the most about this. I have nothing against same sex relationships. But I do have a strong opinion on age appropriateness of couples. I'm not comfortable with the thought of a teacher and student having a relationship, and even more strongly against it when the teacher is more than twice the age of the student. I know that technically Rick is an adult since he is 18. However, his teacher is not only almost 40, he is also married. And what I could not understand is how someone who is married, and almost 40 and has been STRAIGHT his whole life can suddenly indulge in an affair with another male, fall in love, and leave his wife for this person. They have absolutely nothing in common either. Rick hates PE, and seems to be lackadaisical with his education (meaning he wasn't a great student in other areas either) and yet does not want to work instead. His sole purpose is to stalk his teacher by remaining in school where he can see him. Even if you're flattered by the thought, WTH is there between them? If the author could have explained what Mr. Devereaux was thinking and feeling, then maybe it would have made more sense. I also could not like Rick. Honestly, the guy had absolutely nothing redeeming about himself. He has an "affair" or rather one night stand with Jared by pretending Jared was Mr. Devereaux. Why? On the one hand he states that he really liked him, and how gorgeous his eyes were, but on the other hand he has sex with him, but didn't really want to be with him. You don't lose your virginity to someone you don't really want to be with. And the constant use of the word "passionately" drove me absolutely nuts. Think of another word to describe the lustful feelings coursing through them. Please. Then there was the whole "ghost" thing. I can't even begin to describe how off that was, and so not in keeping with the story...unless the author's intent was to make "obsession" a three way street. Rick's obsession with Mr. Devereaux, and Jared's obsession with Rick, but then can you blame the guy?

Last, there was Rick's fear of anyone finding out he was gay. What did he expect would happen IF he got Mr. Devereaux to want him back? Rick wasn't exactly subtle about his feelings for Mr. Devereaux. Constantly staring at him, constantly playing with himself around him, and keeping his photo as his wallpaper on his phone. Not exactly a recipe for NOT getting caught out. I do have to admit I loved the suspense of the threatening notes, and the twist of who it actually was at the end. I'm reading book 2, but have a feeling that if that book were combined with this one, and this one edited to clean it up some, this could rate higher. Right now as is? I can't recommend this to anyone else.

I received this book for a fair and honest review. I have to say, I didn’t know what to think of this book at first. I have to say I found myself emotionally drawn to this book. I truly felt everything that the characters felt and went through. Rick is a young man still going to school and has a few friends, he has a major crush on Mr. Devereaux and is always fantasizing about him in some way. The teacher has no idea and is married, he is a soccer coach and is very fit. As time progresses Rick does become infatuated with him and he does make a move on him. Rick is 18 years old and nobody knows he is gay or anything, he has not told anyone. In order for Rick to get closer to Mr. Devereaux (Jacques) he joins in on the soccer team. Can his plan work with seducing Mr. Devereaux? Is Mr. Devereaux feeling the same and not wanting to lose his job, marriage, and life as he know it for love? The love that is told through the story is truly amazing, love is not about age or gender it is love in all different ways and forms. This story has twists and turns and love wrapped in the middle, a true heart wrenching story of love and life. I would say this is an book that you have to read and your emotions will run over, truly a wonderful story. I would give it 8 stars if I could!!

This story is told through the eyes of 18 year old Rick who has a crush on his male PE teacher, things become heated between them and Rick is fighting his obsession and trying to keep his sexuality a secret to family and friends. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you turning the pages and the M/M sex scenes are detailed but not crude. I personally loved this story but was disappointed with the epilogue at the end. I will however look forward to the authors next book in the series, which is called Temptation.

Original Post: eARC Review: Obsession (The Obsession Series, #1) by Steve Genis

My Rating: (5 of 5 Stars) 5The multiplier rating takes effect.

Oh my heart aches so bad but in a satisfied way. With this ache, I just confirmed to myself that this is one story that is tragically unforgettable and real.

This is a story of obsession.

We have Rick, a young high school student, had always felt something for his PE teacher Jacques Devereaux, married to the principal of the school. The crush had developed when still in 7th grade but instead of losing intensity, it just gained as the years passed. The crush soon turned to falling in love and finally into an obsession Rick could not rid of.

By a twist of fate, Rick and family are sent to London for his father's work. Although it only lasted a year, it was that year he met, became friends with and finally lost his virginity to bar owner Jared. An Englishman and in his thirties, he never thought to fall in love with and become obsessed with Rick. He knew from day one that Rick had feelings for Jacques but he hoped and hoped that he could capture Rick's heart eventually. His decision to leave all and claim Rick for his own is something that drives his obsession to an end he never expected.

Jacques is the PE teacher, married for twenty or more years, he had secrets of his own shared and kept from his wife. He loved his wife but Rick was someone he could not somehow ignore, nor resist, and soon the fascination with the young man turns into an obsession he could not escape from. Even if it meant losing all.

This story of obsession is as obsession takes us. Based on true to life events made into fiction, this love triangle is an unexpected real story of how a young man's future could get influenced by two older men. One would destroy his trust, one would destroy his heart. He almost had it, had happiness in his hands, but life intervenes and throws a curve ball Rick could not control nor catch. Soon, it was hard to breathe or to be content. Could he make it in the end?

I almost did not make it in the end. My heart was ripped to pieces and I could not help but just sit there and stare blankly into space. This struck deep chords within me, especially after losing one friend just lately to a disease we could not comprehend. Tears. What tears. And yet, I cannot but help but recommend for this is a read that strikes, hits and leaves scars that are both bad and good. Beautifully written (and I don't care about editing, never did) and just loved and cried.

A truly unforgettable story I never expected.

I'm having a hard time rating this book – I typically like an HEA even if I have to go through some pain and angst to get there. This book is very dark and I suppose it could possibly be considered a pseudo happy ending although I didn’t really like the ending.

After reading the synopsis of book 2, that seems like the more logical place to start this series.

Mr. Genis’ writing and story-telling ability are very good. I would guess this was a hard story to tell and he did a good job of telling it.

Rick is obsessed with his PE teacher, Jacques Devereaux - like scary obsessed. He believes himself to be in love with him and fantasizes about them being together. He is angry jealous of Jacques wife which makes his obsession even scarier. Finding out that Rick’s previous relationship is with an older man – 37 to his 18, it seems that Rick has daddy issues that manifest into what he thinks is love because he feels he never had his father’s love.

What I didn’t like about this story was the sudden switch of Jacques from turning down Rick’s advances to suddenly agreeing to have sex with him to being in love. I don’t know if it was because we only saw him through Rick’s eyes and never really got inside his head but it was too quick a turnaround for my liking.

There is a story within the story revolving around Rick and his one-night stand from London, Jared (whom is featured in book 2). This sub-plot is almost as scary as the story between Jacques and Rick. As you read it, you understand that it is the highest of ironies but it was unsettling at best.

The ending really left me feeling unfulfilled.

***REVIEWED FOR SARAH & KIRSTY'S BOOK REVIEWS***

Wow! What a book! There were so many twists and turns in this book that I found myself chomping at the bit in a rush to find out what was going to happen next. I was able to relate to some parts of this story which made it very enjoyable for me to read. I had mixed feelings for Rick. It kind of felt like he manipulated Jacques at the beginning and I didn’t see him being like that. As I read on though, I started to like him more and more. It was obvious that he had deep feelings for Jacques but he also wanted to try and do the right thing with everyone else. I loved Jacques! Imagining his French accent made me squirm! I hated Evie from the very first moment she was introduced; I wasn’t prepared to find out about the real Evie though. There was something about her that just didn’t quite sit right with me. Jared was an absolute tool and I was kind of happy that he got his just desserts. I loved how he was incorporated into the sex scene with Jacques and Rick. That was something I have never read about before. It completely worked though as it gave this book a bit of an edge that others haven’t got. The ending I didn’t see coming at all! I was weeping when I had finished! The sex scenes in this book were extremely erotic. There was also a lot of emotion in this book which I loved as I felt like I was on the same journey with the characters. I really felt like I was part of the story. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I think Steve more than did justice to the M/M genre. 5 stars!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Rick is an 18 year old who is convinced he's in love with his PE teacher. He is obsessed and wants to make his teacher realise they should be together. But happens with the stalker becomes the one being stalked?

This book was slow to start and a bit frustrating at first but it quickly picked up and started getting interesting. Rick was frustrating at first and his stalker ways had me a little concerned. And then the death threats and attempts started.

This book was so different from anything else I've ever read. The ending is bitter sweet and had me in tears. I'd recommend a box of tissues by your side as you near the end. 2 days finished and if I think about it I still tear up.

A late comer to this series I read it in its recommended order and I must insist if your starting or with this series that you also read it in that order so that you can gain the full experience from start to finish:
- Temptation
- Obsession
- Resignation

Wow…where do I begin? I had the great opportunity to receive an advanced copy of the prequel to Obsession, Temptation. Reading Temptation certainly set me up nicely for Obsession but even I couldn’t predict the direction the story would take. Obsession is set two years after the end of Temptation and our main character Rick has it all figured out. He’s in love and the object of his desire is a much older man who already plays a rather significant role in Rick’s life—and this has disaster written all over it. Rick’s past and his present collide in amazing way—much of it leaving me to wonder, what else can go wrong. This book was full of plot twists but they didn’t over power the focal point of the story, which, at its core, is a love story. Those plot twists can be quite shocking but so very entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed this book—Steve Genis is a very talented author; I’ll read whatever he writes. Please give Obsession a try—you won’t regret it!

An amazing 5 +++++++++++ stars for this!!
Now in the 1st book (Temptation) i was NOT a fan of Rick at all, but after reading this my views have been changed.
So in this books he's back home, in Melbourne and his infatuation with Mr Devereaux is still as strong as before. The only thing is now he's being followed and having his every move watched. HE has no clue who it is but his obsessiveness with Jacques, his teacher clouds his thoughts so he shrugs everything that is happening off more or less. A face from London makes a reappearance too, threatening him.
Without giving too much more away a LOT happens in this book and some of it makes you think you know who is behind what's happening but when it comes to light about who it actually is you won't see it coming !!
This was a brilliantly written book, i loved the twists and how we're led to think one thing when BOOM it's completely different than what you expect !!
And the ending was just WOW!!
Emotional ride but amazing !!!

3.5 nearly 4 stars
I read this book following a recommendation by someone in a book group I follow. I have mixed feelings on it, I enjoyed it however there were things that also frustrated me.
PROS: the author clearly tried to ensure the reader understood ricks infatuation with jaques and all the feelings of being a closeted young man.
The final few chapters truly made me cry, as the author got the emotion exactly right.
CONS:
Jaques accent- I'd have much preferred the author just stated that he spoke in a French twang rather than trying to write the words in the way he spoke them.
I found some of the scenes too far fetched- Jared possessing jaques body for example did nothing for me, but then I'm not a fan of PNR.

All in all I'm glad I read the book, and I will look into purchasing the remainder of the series

Where to start with this review?
I am going to start off by saying that I read this in one day and loved every minute of this book from start to finish. I had a serious case of love/hate relationship with Rick, The guy rubbed my up the wrong way a few times and made me want to shake some sense into him.
Steve Genis does a fantastic job with the character development, he is able to make you feel as if you know the people he is writing about.
This was one story that will stick with you well after you have read it. Never have I read a book and been on such a roller coaster of emotions. I laughed, cried not to mention the What the? moment.
If you love a good book with a fantastic plot line, hot love scenes and a story of self discovery this is it ....
Well Done Steve, I cant wait to read what you come up with next...

What a magnificent book!!!!

I originally read this book first, and then I was told I should have read the Prequel Temptation and then read this one. So that's what I have done!!
Reading Obsession after Temptation was the best decision - the book was magnificent!!!
Rick has the hots for his French and PE teacher and he has decided to act upon it.
A secret affair - with devastating consequences kept me glued to the book.
Secrets and mysteries are abundant throughout.
Jared makes a surprise visit from London - with disastrous results.
Congrats Steve Genis - I absolutely loved this book.
I laughed and cried all the way through it.
Definitely deserving a 5***** rating - if not more..

I really tried to like this book, I did. I think it has potential, but the writing as of right now, is way to choppy. Too many actions involved, like I said before (ex: I opened the door. I got out. I walked to the car. I got in) I think it would be good, if was just cleaned up a little bit.

Now, I'm all for creepy stalkers and all, and I get this book is called obsession... but you lost me a little at the bathroom window, then again in the pool. Maybe because I can't relate to the characters mentality. Perhaps when the prequel comes out I'll have a better understanding and then may dive back into this one. Until then...

I have just finished reading this novel by Steve and he certainly knows how to make you feel the characters and the emotions they go through. Its the story of Rick and his obsession with his French P.E teacher and how he copes with his predicament. He finally decides to come out and tell people he is gay with unexpected consequences. This is certainly a tale weaved with many twists and turns and mysteries waiting to be solved. Once you start you are hooked and it is hard to put down and a warning the kleenex will need to be handy as there a couple of cries and maybe an ugly cry or two.

I admit this book had me wanting to learn more about the characters in it and what was going to happen next. A roller coaster ride that had me wanting to learn the fate of this 18 year old kid. The story is intriguing and characters are entertaining and I found myself turning the pages into the wee hours. That said some areas were a bit choppy and could have done with some editing book a worthwhile story regardless and well worth the price. Enjoy…

oh man what a story the whole thing had me from the start. Rick is a very strong young man as far as a character goes. he is very smart in what he wants and how to go about getting it. too bad so many people got hurt from the affair he had with his teacher. Eve is just wow never saw it coming or thought it was her. Jennifer in the end turned out to be very forgiving. really cant wait to read book two.

This is a really beautiful and emotional m/m story.

It's a story about Rick growing up and about how he deals with being gay. He's a young high school student who has had a crush on his PE teacher for years. He becomes obsessed with his teacher. When he unexpectedly moves to England for a year with his family he meets another older man called Jared.

Obsession

This book was wonderful in how one and two depicted Rick's love for Jacques as he struggles with his feelings and people's opinions. As their lives come to a close everyone realizes how happy they made each other. I was enthralled by these books and the beautiful romance, I would strongly suggest reading them because of the great romantic nature and the beautiful plot!

Obsession by Steve Genis is very aptly titled. I became obsessed within the first few chapters. The story is compelling, mysterious, and tragic. It slowed down a bit in the middle and could use a once more in editing, but is a very solid story line.
