No Regrets

Rate this book
On my last birthday, I made one vow for the year. Live with no regrets. Eleven months have passed, though, and nothing has changed. I still sleep alone, spend my life working, and never move out of my comfort zone. Then the loss of my dog throws my whole life out of orbit, and I end up in bed with a very hot and slightly-too-young veterinarian, who has recently made a vow of his own. Live with no strings. Josh is more than happy to help me with the list of acts in the bedroom I’ve been afraid to try. He’s a willing partner for everything I’ve wondered about, as long as I don’t demand more. He’s serious about his no-strings philosophy. As serious as I am about living with no regrets. I can’t help but fall for him, even though I know better. So my biggest regret might be a broken heart.

No Regrets is an enjoyable and hot little number, sprinkled with sugar, predictability and melodrama.

As far as honest emotions and feelings go, what actually struck me as authentic was the beginning of No Regrets when Leslie had to That was the real deal to me. However, all those pit stops into Sugarville throughout the last 20 % kinda ruined the book for me. In consequence, I couldn't give a higher rating and it was definitely not as great as Kent's Seven. Also, the more I read the more I got annoyed with Josh. While I found his personal background and past very intriguing, I had a hard time understanding him and when he said...

...I had to roll my eyes. How melodramatic was that?

It's ironic, isn't it, that so late into the story From the get-go it was clear what they would share: great and hot sex with no-strings. No more, no less. There couldn't be anything more because Josh wasn't open for something serious. He was so closed off, detached and kinda numb and not willing to talk about his issues it left me somewhat frustrated. A certain part of his characterization came off as…there's a good term in German that comes to mind 'überzeichnet'…overdrawn or exaggerated, maybe? I'm not sure if that's accurate. Anyway, I usually don't love Claire Kent's heroines but this time around I've experienced difficulties to sympathize with the hero also. The sex was well-written and suited Leslie's desire to cast off her boring and reserved personality to explore her new and adventurous side. My favorite part was the highly alluring second sex scene. I even found the awkward in a very refreshing way because let's face it, real life is not always as perfect as the fictional world and I think the author handled that part believably. I found the resolution incl. the happy ending a little bit too easy.

Regardless of my issues, I'd recommend you to give it a try if you are on the lookout for a quick and hot read in between. And bear that in mind…no regrets!

No Regrets is a short, hot, and somewhat emotional read. Though the story and characters were rather predictable and cheesy, I still enjoyed it!

This book is about Leslie who has to put down her dog Polly and as a result, is sad, depressed, and lonely. One night at a bar, she ends up having a one-night stand with the vet Josh, and soon they agree to a casual, no-strings-attached fling that eventually leads to something more.

My thoughts:

This was a fun book to read! I didn’t really think there was much depth to the story, and I expected their casual affair to go beyond that and evolve into a relationship. I really loved Josh and his filthy mouth and though Leslie is a caring woman, I didn’t like how she got clingy so fast. Overall, the book isn’t anything extraordinary and didn’t hit my I-loved-it buttons but it’s a solid read if you’re looking for a fast-paced book with hot sex!

This book is longer than a novella but shorter than a typical full length novel.

“Eleven months ago, I’d turned thirty-eight, and I’d made one vow for the year. Live with no regrets.”

Leslie decides to live with no regrets after she has to put down her dog. She meets Josh, the vet, a man younger than her and she decides to have a one night stand with him. One night isn’t enough, so they agree to a no strings attached relationship.

"No regrets" is a short, steamy read. It’s very predictable, so you'll know from the beginning how things will progress between Leslie and Josh.

I enjoyed the first half of the book, where they try some new things in bed ( the sex scenes are really hot and very well written ), but the second part felt too rushed. The book doesn’t have actually a storyline, so I didn’t understand how and where Leslie and Josh fell for each other.

Overall, it was a nice read, but a little too cheesy for me!

Leslie who just lost her dog decides to do things without regrets. But when a one night stand turns into casual sex, could Josh give her more?

I almost DNF mostly because the constant sex in the first half of the book. It didn't help when I found their connection quite dull and her "no regrets" motto was getting on my nerves. But I did start to like it more towards the end.

Overall I wouldnt say there was much of a storyline but it was quite steamy and quick to read. I don't think I will remember this one in a few weeks time though.

After a devastating loss, Leslie is grieving and Josh happens to show up in the right place, at the right time, with all the right actions to sweep her up and away from the sadness that is encompassing her days. I loved that he was organically placed into her life and that everything that followed felt real as well.

This couple are fully developed in every way despite this being a relatively short read. It’s written completely in the heroine’s point of view and usually I’m able to pretty well understand this author’s heroes. Not so this time. Which is where so much of the twist and angst contribute to the story. But when this couple come together as mature adults to confront their issues, Josh really lets her know how he feels. And it is such a beautiful moment...for both of them!

description

With a fast pace and incredible characters, this centers a lot on the heat that intensifies more and more with each encounter. Normally, smexy stories tend to lose the emotional element, but not so here. Even during the most sizzling of all scenes, Leslie and Josh are connecting in ways that I rarely find in other romance books.

4 DAMN YOU ARE HOT, DR. BENNETT, STARS!!

 photo imagejpg1_zpsdc77f4c8.jpg

Well, then! This was my first Claire Kent read and will MOST CERTAINLY not be my last. Short and sweet, but packed a kinky hot punch!

Dr. Josh Bennett is the new vet that Leslie comes across when her dog is very ill. Leslie meets him in the midst of a terrible and sad situation, but when she bumps into him again later, out of the blue, sparks fly big time! Dr. Bennett is hot, young, and fun and would be the perfect way for Leslie to carry out a recent little promise that she made to herself about living life to the fullest and living with No Regrets. Both are just looking for some fun and distraction, and damn do they find it.

We weren't playing house. We weren't even really friends. We were fuck-buddies, and I couldn't forget it.

This book is HOT, caliente, scorching!!! But not cheezy porno hot...sensual and sexy hot...LOL! And thank you, Claire for writing one of their...um... encounters to be probably in the most realistic way that I have ever seen this particular sexual act written. (Anyone who reads the book, will know exactly what scene I am referring to.)

The book does take a serious turn at the end, and things do not continue to be quite as light between these two...which, you'll kind of expect. But, I love the way it wrapped up in the end. It's a very realistic, fun, hot, but still emotional read. Longer than a novella, but shorter than a full-length novel. If you're looking for a fun, hot read, that still packs some emotion...definitely try No Regrets.

"And there was one thing I'd learned in the last few months. Making a vow didn't matter. There was no way to live with no regrets Life could never offer you that. You made choices based on what was important to you, at any particular time, and the regrets would be the things you didn't choose."

Low/medium angst erotic romance between 39 yr old h and 35 yr old vet H who have an exclusive but casual sex relationship for almost the entire book.

h who is almost 40 is a very self-contained character, she hasn't had much luck in romance or even sex, which given she's so beautiful and sensual, I found difficult to believe. H is someone who spent nearly a decade doing relief work in Africa, has seen innumerable horrors. Being a very sensitive type, this scarred him and H became an island, distanced himself from everyone - family/friends/women/even pets - trying to protect himself from hurt.

H/h have a ONS and H offers h a no strings sexual affair. h who hasn't dated anyone in 4 yrs and has never had as good sex with anyone else is first surprised ( and not in a good way) but she's attracted and since she planned to really live life this year, she goes for it and genuinely tries to do the no strings thing.
In return she gets the best sex of her life. H is experienced and inventive( isn't that always the case?) and teaches her all sort of stuff plus they have great chemistry. Eventually they become good friends, h naturally becomes more affectionate but H pulls back and h recognises this. When H's mom dies h goes with him as a friend bcos H has no one else. But when they're back, h ends it - she enjoyed what they had and it would always be a pleasant memory but it wasn't working for her. She needs more. And so H lets her go.

So after some time ,h sees H in the park they jog in and H tells her he wants a real relationship with h - staying away from people didn't save him from hurt when his mom died, so he's willing to open himself to caring/feeling love again - h says okay and there is a HEA.

I liked that both h/H were not typical caricatures but human characters with their own unique stories. The book was low-angst and the h/H talked to each other instead of at each other, plus the sex stuff was hot. Honestly the way it was written it felt the h was discovering sex for the first time, which at 40 yrs seemed bit unbelievable!! Book also needed some editing. But overall it was an interesting read, not one of those usual plot-by-numbers.

3.5 stars!!

Leslie and Josh meet under less than auspicious circumstances, when he turns out to be the new vet at the clinic where she brings her dog who has been sick with cancer to be put down. When they meet again later that day, they embark on a no-strings attached sex only affair, a chance for some emotional release for both of them with clear expectations on both of their parts as to what they are bringing to the table. As time goes on, their bond becomes more than physical. But Josh struggles to open himself up emotionally and it's not enough for Leslie. Can they find their way to a happy ending?

Claire Kent can always be counted on to bring messy, emotional overtones to her highly erotic stories. In this case, you have the tragedy to start with (Leslie losing her dog) and Josh's personal experiences as an aid worker in Africa that led to him completely shutting himself off from getting emotionally attached to anyway, including closing the door to his family and friends. Their affair is a way to express their grief in a purely physical way without the complications of intimate conversations - at least at first. The sex scenes are visceral and ring with truth. There is a particular 'ahem' "back door" scene that is probably the most realistic I've ever read in terms of dealing with the physical and emotional complications of this kind of sex. While there are lots of steamy encounters between them, the style varies from a more role-play oriented form to the reality later on of two people who are sharing their true selves with each other. I loved the way the story played out and how Josh eventually realized that if he wanted to keep Leslie in his life, he'd have to open up to her. Definitely worth the read. 4 stars.

This was a quick and easy read that pleasantly surprised me. When I first started it I almost put it down because of the circumstances surrounding why Leslie was at the vet with her dog Polly. As I continued on though, I became more and more enthralled with the writing. The story is simple and predictable, though the unexpected details placed throughout each scene all add up to a magnificent story that is like no other.

I loved the chemistry between Leslie and Josh, though he did seem too good to be true- nobody is that perfect. Then the reader finds out about his commitment issues and suddenly he is not so perfect, which made me like him more. Leslie is your typical 38 year old who struggles with grief and self-esteem issues, especially when the younger vet (Josh) shows an interest. I love how they couldn't control their passion for one another, even when they were running together. I knew how the story would end but that didn't take away from the build-up.

I have not read any of Claire Kent's other stories but if they are as good as this one, then I am definitely a fan!

I like how the story started... but.. I got bored.
I don't know if I'm just tired or not in the mood to read a novel after finishing 3 novels a few hours ago but... I didn't find the story interesting, and the 'guy wants a hook-up' is kind of getting really old especially if there's nothing new or exciting about the plot.

The story's pretty simple.. kinda flat too.

This was a really lovely story. The reason I rated this only three (well 3.5) stars is bc, as with a lot of other CK/NA books, the characters here are working through some painful experiences, and certain things definitely hit a nerve for me and I ended up feeling way more than I wanted to feel when reading a romance novella.

Jesus Christ. This author needs to change the "words" she uses for sexy time pleasure, because "eh" and "eh heh" are not sex sounds. Those are sounds of indifference. And I'm hoping she didn't have a casual sex fuck buddy relationship that gave her indifferent sex. That's missing the point.

Speaking of missing the point, these characters were really flat. And I didn't give a flying fuck about either of them.

I went on a Claire Kent reading binge phase towards late 2023 which sort of fizzled out early 2024. It was wonderful while it lasted, and I believe I will still pick up some of her older science fiction novels at some point when I once again hit a reading slump or get in the mood for a pick-me-up romance which I know Ms. Kent will definitely deliver.

No Regrets is an apt title for the story that unfolds between 38 year old paralegal Leslie who grapples with her grief over losing Polly, her dog of eight years, and Josh Bennett, 34 year old veterinarian, who is new to Leslie’s town. Leslie made a vow to herself on her last birthday that she would live with no regrets, and nothing has changed in the past eleven months until tragedy comes calling.

Leslie and Josh’s first encounter takes place under emotionally charged circumstances, when Leslie is struggling to get her aging and very ill dog out of her car into the clinic. Josh who has recently joined as a partner to the clinic assists her, ends up making an impression on Leslie through his kindness and sensitivity in dealing with everything.

When Josh seeks her out to spend some time with Leslie knowing that she is going through an emotionally taxing time, one thing leads to another and before they know it, their mutual attraction ends in a no-strings-attached, one-night stand. From the start, Josh makes it clear that he is not looking for any long-term commitment, and Leslie, though she is not looking for meaningless hookups, says yes believing that it would be just a one time thing.

After the initial hookup which neither believed would amount to much, Leslie and Josh reconnect by chance at a bar and gradually establish a pseudo-relationship that is purely no strings attached. While Josh continues to stress that is not looking for a happily ever after, Leslie though hesitant at first, considers the proposition as part of resolution to live without regrets.

While Josh and Leslie continue on this path and enjoy each other’s company, the emotional intimacy between them develops and strengthens, where Josh starts showing glimpses of vulnerability and Leslie starting to want more than just casual intimacy. It takes a lot for Josh to finally reconcile with his past and work for something long lasting with Leslie, upon his realization that short-term and casual does not fit the path that he and Leslie have walked on.

I liked both Leslie and Josh. Leslie for her strength and vulnerability, her determination to live without regrets (which did not amount to much at first – something we can all relate to), her humor and self-awareness, and her ability to see through Josh. When it comes to Josh, it is his empathy and kindness, his complexity, his quiet strength, and towards the end, his transformation from an emotionally closed off man to someone who is more open to pursuing love and where it takes him that made him endearing.

In signature Kent style, Leslie and Josh share undeniable chemistry rendering their moments from lighthearted banter to intense intimacy, both electric and captivating. The push and pull dynamic between the two due to the differences in terms of their expectations creates the needed angst for the story and I loved all of it.

Recommended for fans of contemporary romance who love a reluctant hero and his journey towards emotional fulfillment.

Final Verdict: No Regrets by Claire Kent is a beautifully crafted romance that explores grief, healing, and the transformative power of love, with characters whose emotional depth and sizzling chemistry captivate from start to finish.

4 You Feel Complete Stars ⭐

I adore romances written about actual adults (no bells and whistles, just real life scenarios). Whether it's love at first sight or one night stands that evolve organically; it's just my thing. And strangely enough they're so difficult to find.

We weren’t here to bare our souls. We were here to get fucked.

Grief makes us act out. When Leslie is forced to put down her beloved dog, it's the new to town veterinarian that provides unorthodox comfort. But it's just one night even if Leslie has promised herself to live with no regrets. Except one night is somehow the beginning.

I was doing this. Doing this. I wasn’t going to regret not taking what I wanted—not when the world always, always slipped out of your hands, no matter how tightly you held on.

Josh may not be looking for commitment but something about Leslie turns his crank and he's hard pressed to resist. So commences a casual affair since fate keeps placing them in each other's path. The intimacy and chemistry is off the charts but Josh is adamant about keeping it platonic.

“You turn me on just standing there. I want to fuck you again. I want to make you come harder than you’ve ever come before. But that’s all it would be. If you want hot sex with no strings, then I’m your man. But if you want something serious, then you should just walk away.”

Initially Leslie is hung up on being older and plain but Josh makes her feel anything but. And as they both strip away their inhibitions, it's becomes very clear what's holding them back. This isn't a game, it's about wounds that haven't healed.

Having loved this author's post apocalypse romances, No Regrets is part of her earlier works. There's no doubt her writing just keeps getting better and better but this was just as emotional, super steamy and relatable.

This review is going to be a little different than mine usually are, because I didn’t LOVE this book. I liked it a lot, it kept me interested enough, but there wasn’t anything that kept me on the edge of my seat. That being said, I am sure you’re wondering at this point why I am writing this review. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t do bad reviews. I find them petty and mean and unhelpful. But that’s the thing; this isn’t a bad review. It wasn’t a bad book, and I gave it four stars. Obviously there was something that kept me reading, and I’ll tell you what that was. It was a perfectly normal book, and that fact alone is what kept my attention. Rather than live in a fantasy like we so often do when we enter a new book world, No Regrets felt real. There were no pretenses, no over the top characters or unbelievable situations that you just KNEW would never happen were you outside the confines of a book. For me, that was the hook of this story.

Our characters, Leslie and Josh, meet randomly when she takes her terminal dog into the vet’s office. On the worst day of her life thus far, he is there to offer comfort in a way she didn’t realize she needed. Vehemently not wanting anything serious, Josh and Leslie enter into a no strings attached sexual relationship, the term relationship being used very loosely here. A major prop I will give this story is the accuracy of the facts within. I’ll admit to be very intrigued with books that involve anal sex, and from the blurb, that’s what drew me to this one. The biggest compliment that I can give No Regrets is that it involved one of my most favorite scenes EVER in a book, and you guessed right; it was the anal scene. It wasn’t because it was overtly sexy, which it was, but rather for its accuracy. There was awkwardness, there was uncomfortable silence, there was pain as her body was getting used to this foreign object going in a place that had never been entered before. And yes, eventually there WAS pleasure, and whew...was it ever deliriously scorching to read. But it took a good little while to get there, and I sincerely appreciated that. So often in books involving anal sex the man practically just shoves it in there with little prep and she is instantly orgasaming. Yeah…that does NOT happen in real life, EVER. So for that scene alone, I highly recommend the book!

Despite me not falling in love with this book, I did eventually fall in love with Leslie and Josh. They were everymen people and relatable in every way. Their relationship was a struggle and a very slow build, but I promise that the payoff made it all worth it. Give this book a shot and experience it for yourself!

No Regrets is a quick and steamy read that focuses on the main character, Leslie, vowing to live each day without apology. This promise started before she had to put her beloved dog to sleep, but it was solidified when she lost the only companion she had for many years. At Leslie’s lowest moment, Josh Bennett offers her a way to feel something other than loneliness and sadness. He proposes no string sex – without complications, feelings, or attachment. Leslie gives in to her desire for Josh and begins a purely physical relationship with him. Fun and distraction are what both Leslie and Josh are looking for, and it works for them both for quite some time, but then Leslie realizes that choosing to shut off a part of who she is to be with Josh goes back on her vow to live without regrets, so she has to make a choice. Can Leslie break down Josh’s walls and get him to take a chance with her, or does she hold on to the hope for a serious relationship, making who she truly is more important than what Josh has to offer her?

I’ve read quite a few of Claire Kent’s stories, and let me tell you, she knows how to write a hot sex scene. She has a way of making the connection between the main characters come through with their filthy words and wanton desires. Because Leslie and Josh spend a lot of their time together in the bedroom, their bond is formed there, but despite Josh’s words that that’s all it is for him, readers can tell that their interaction outside of the bedroom illustrates their closeness as well, even if he won’t admit it.

Overall, I enjoyed No Regrets. I didn’t feel as connected to the characters as I would have liked to, which may have been because Josh’s background is only partially given, and it doesn’t come until the end of the book. The theme of living without regrets is a great lesson for readers, but I honestly don’t think Leslie’s actions allowed her to live that way. There were many times in the story that I questioned Leslie’s choices, especially when they seemed to be the exact opposite of how she was trying to be. Even though there was a bit of predictability to the story, the idea behind it and Leslie’s new found understanding of how to live life at the end of the text make it worth the read.

Not my favorite by this author. That's more because of the trope and style of the story. I don't tend to care for stories about flings or no strings sex even when they lead to more. It seems so shallow at the start. That's the basis for this story.

However, I still really like this author though I tend to prefer her stories under her real author name Noelle Adams. They tend to have more plot and concentration on the emotion and character building. Claire Kent, her pseudonym, stories are more sexually based and have more sex to plot ratio. Also, for those sensitive to it, be aware that the stories under her pseudonym tend to be crasser and more direct in their language.

I do love that this author uses beta heroes in some of her stories like this one. I might not have loved the emotionally closed off vibe from this hero but the author makes it work with what you see between the lines. She does a good job in her stories of showing subtly what her emotionally closed off heroes are really feeling.

NO REGRETS by Claire Kent
*was given a copy in exchange for an honest review

NO REGRETS is another one-click must by Claire Kent. NO REGRETS is a standalone story about a no-strings attached relationship that may or may not develop into more. Leslie and Josh meet under the worse of circumstances but after a night at the bar and hot bathroom scene, Leslie and Josh begin a no-strings attached relationship.

Claire Kent never disappoints in the hotness of her books and her characters come to life and have flaws that are realistic and believable. Leslie is trying to live her life with no more regrets and she takes a chance with what Josh is offering. NO REGRETS is a sexy read and full of hottest of hot sex scenes but the journey that leads both Josh and Leslie into more self discovery makes it even better.

NO REGRETS by Claire Kent receives 4 out of 5 Platypires.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review as part of G and the Book Diva Girls. This is the first book I have read by this author. I had a hard time initially getting into the story and there were a few times that I felt like I was not given enough details of the situation. I loved that the book was believable and that her characters had flaws like the rest of us.

Brilliant

Another absolutely EPIC book from Kent.
This is the 3rd book of hers that I’ve read and I’m going on to another after this one.
This one, like the others, is HOT, lusty, romantic, funny & (most importantly) WELL WRITTEN. There’s a great building of the characters and from the start of the book you’re just consumed by it. I couldn’t put it down.

I guess this book wasn't for me. Although I do enjoy most of Claire Kent's writing, I found this book too long and with too much sex. There wasn't much of a story line. I'm sure there are others who will enjoy it. We all have different tastes and I like a lot more suspense/romance in a story!!

My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book... for more, visit Punya Reviews...

I’ve previously read Claire Kent’s Escorted series which I liked a lot. No Regrets, being a novella, was my choice for a fast read. I sure had some frustrating moments but the author has a way of writing that inevitably ends up touching your heart. I can’t confirm that I didn’t shed a tear or two, or had this silly grin on my face when the story ended, cause it had me in knots of emotions.

When Leslie finds her dog, Polly, to be terminally ill she breaks down quite naturally. Pushing 40 and rather a reserved, loner sort, her only constant companion had always been Polly. It’s not like Leslie didn’t have dates and so on, but somehow, she never had a stable, long-term relationship. So when she met the young and handsome veterinarian Josh, she wasn’t expecting anything, let alone a no-strings-hot-sex relationship.

Josh, whom she meets while taking Polly to her vet for the last time, turns out to be Leslie’s healing balm; at least for the time being. He does knock Leslie’s socks off on the very first moment they meet. He proves to be very efficient, helping her thru when Polly is finally put to sleep.

Later that day, a torn and restless Leslie finds herself in the park where not only she jogs regularly but also had taken Polly many-a-times for her walk. She definitely didn’t want to be alone in her apartment that night. Then she sees the sexy veterinarian again, who was also jogging at that time. Talks turn to a swift date... then, a one night stand. It was so unexpected that Leslie didn’t think she is capable of something like this. She has always done relationships, so I didn’t think she had random guys over at all. But there’s something so enigmatic and devastatingly sexy about Josh that in a spar of moment, she decides to do ‘it’ in a public restroom. Another thing she never even imagined doing with anyone!

When she contemplates on it later, the practical girl in Leslie tells her that being with Josh might not be the wise idea. But when she sees him again, the challenge in his eyes tempts her. Josh has already proposed a no strings thing but he also left the options open. Just sex, whenever they wanted, either his place or hers; she can take it or leave it. Leslie though, at first, wants to leave. Then, she finds herself turning around because she desperately needed some kinda distraction in her life. This hot, good-looking (and probably younger) guy wants her that much, and if their one encounter proves anything, he’s good at what he does, so why not?

So it’s settled. They’d see each-other, but it’s Leslie who has to pick up the gauntlet, as in, call Josh first if she wanted to hook up. Leslie doesn’t like it but sex is way too good to pass up. But, most importantly, she unwittingly begins to get attached to Josh in a way that was forbidden in their initial deal. She loves spending time with him, precious little as it is. There’s very little cuddling after sex, though she wants to cuddle up to him all night. She loves talking to him about everyday things. She just loves seeing him. Josh also seems to be enjoying their time together. But the invisible wall of ‘no-strings’ doesn’t let Leslie to get any closer. Josh has already confessed that he’s quite a bit younger than her. At first, it does shake her confidence a little. Leslie is nervous that Josh would tire of her and move on but he divests her off that notion by his crazy lovemaking every time they’re together. Some months pass and the spark between them is as fresh as it was the first time they met.

But Josh wouldn’t come clean about why he doesn’t want relationships. That’s a total no-go area. Leslie, gradually, begins to understand that it’s not only in his love life that he’s so reluctant to commit. Apparently, he treats his family the same way. He doesn’t have much communication with anyone, living alone in his place. Leslie is very curious, but she also knows her queries will fall into deaf ears cause Josh would stiffen up, which would be her cue to shut up. Josh has made her every forbidden sexual desire come true. He is, Leslie would go as far as to say, a willing partner in anything sexual. But she’s ‘just sex’ to him. And this keeps eating at Leslie all through their encounters. She keeps debating, should she stay or break it off? But ultimately, she realizes that no matter what’s written in the future, she has come to care for him much more deeply than she ever had for any guy.

Personally, I’m not big on one-night stands or no-strings stuff, which reflects in my choice of reading materials. I was prepared for it in this story, yet Josh and Leslie’s chemistry was so explosive, I found it unbelievable that these two won’t fall for each-other! For a long time, I found myself asking this, getting frustrated in turn. I liked the simplistic writing style, which went so well with the narratives. Loved majority of the sex scenes as Josh is as good as they can get without any unnecessary drama in bed. I absolutely LOVED Josh, so I could comprehend Leslie’s dilemma pretty well cause I’d probably feel the same if I was in her place.

After a while though, Josh begins to soften up a little. One day, he finally tells Leslie snippets of a horrific incident that he witnessed while working as a volunteer in Africa that changed the course of his life. And his lifestyle. Leslie finally understands that Josh is wounded enough inside to not want to get involved, to not want that connection to happen with anyone or anything. Hell, he doesn’t even want a pet, the talk of which once made them fight, catching Leslie completely unawares.

When the news of a personal tragedy in his family arrives, it unravels Josh at last. He seems so lost that, Leslie, on a spur of the moment, asks to accompany him, totally expecting him to decline her offer. But a visibly shocked Josh just nods his head. And every time they were at his home, meeting with relatives etc., it was very much apparent that Josh gathered his strength from Leslie’s presence, sometimes quite unconscious of him doing so.

After her time with Josh’s family, Leslie comes to a decision. It felt imperative that she does. Leslie knew she is falling for Josh, and quite bad. She cares, but she will not ask anything of him. Certainly not when this would be the ultimate deal-breaker. She knew what she was getting into but now, she can’t go on like this anymore. She wants him completely or this must end here, even if it’d break her heart to let him go. And that is what Leslie does after they return from the trip.

I was glad for that ‘break up’ because I really thought they needed this time off to think things through. Josh needed to come to terms with his feelings for Leslie, which was very much evident every time he made love to her. That guy was barely holding it in! But he was stuck in his own nightmare, not letting anyone get close. I’d be annoyed if he didn’t want a relationship just because he didn’t care to have one or was scared of commitments. But I’ve never read a H who needed to love someone as much as Josh did. He later confesses just how much it took him to restrain himself so that he didn’t ask something of Leslie that he was so reluctant to give in the first place.

I loved, LOVED the ending, even though it was on a HFN note. I didn’t care one whit! In my experience, most novella-length stories can’t deliver it all, the way No Regrets did. But I also believe that Leslie and Josh deserve their HEA. It’d be so lovely to read a spinoff if the author decides to write one sometimes in the future. 4.5 stars and recommended!

I noticed Claire Kent had a few books on KU that I haven’t read yet. This premise immediately called to me. Leslie made a promise to herself on her 38th birthday that she would live without regrets but here she is 11 months later with her life looking exactly the same.

Then, sadly, her 14 year old dog Polly’s cancer has advanced too far and it’s time to let her go. Now meeting the new vet Josh under those circumstances wouldn’t normally mean anything. But they run into each other at the park later that day and a conversation is struck. They’re both starving for companionship but for very different reasons. Josh is down for casual sex but he isn’t interest in relationships of any kind. As we learn, he keeps everyone at arm’s length. Leslie doesn’t think she’s capable of casual sex but she thinks about that forgotten “no regrets” pledge and throws caution to the wind.

This explores the idea of “no regrets” as a fallacy. Leslie goes down an unconventional path for her but she ultimately realizes that it’s impossible to live a regret-free life. There’s no way of knowing what might have happened had she chosen not to explore things with Josh. Her life could not have stayed the same as before because she’s also grieving the death of her dog, a major change in itself. And exploring things with Josh opens her up to a different kind of regret where she doesn’t necessarily advocate for what she wants, instead settling for what he’s decided to give. All’s well that ends well for them but it’s not without regret either.

Josh has plenty of regrets, past and present. It’s not clear whether he was in therapy when he had his “mental breakdown” several years ago. If he did have a therapist, he needed to find a better one. I hope that he’ll find a counselor now so he can process what he witnessed as an aid worker, especially since he’s .

There was a heteronormative approach to anal sex that wasn’t great. He says he’d never let anyone get near his ass with her vibrator, while she thinks about how his finger is someplace it “shouldn’t” be. Unsurprisingly, this is also a white cishet world. That was the only misstep in this otherwise enjoyable read.

Characters: Leslie is a 38 year old white paralegal. Josh is a 34 year old white veterinarian and former international aid worker in Chad and Sudan. This is set in Lexington, KY.

Content notes: death of pet springer spaniel (cancer, 14 years old), death of parent (heart attack), past mental breakdown, dog abuse case at work, sick or hurt dogs (mentions), MMC witnessed the aftermath of village massacre in Sudan while working with refugees (mentions of torture, rape, and murder), familial pressure for grandkids, unsafe sex practices (unprotected penetrative sex without discussion of pregnancy or STI prevention; afterward FMC says she’s on birth control), on page sex, power exchange, bondage, spanking, orgasm control, anal play, car sex, public sex, alcohol, inebriation, gender essentialist language, ableist language

I've been on a such a dnf streak lately.

I stopped where they (SPOILERS INCOMING!) went to his house for the second time ever after her friends left the bar. The hero was describing all the ways she was beautiful and how her being "self-contained" is what made her too much of a challenge for guys to pursue as an explanation for her lack of being asked out much.

Idk, I understand a lot of people eat this stuff up and it's nice for someone to see all the things that are amazing about you--but for a 38 year-old to have that much unawareness about how gorgeous/hot she is and still come off to guys as "completed" or "self-contained" sounds a bit contradictory and rings untrue to me. It sounds like fantasy fulfilling bs instead of anything that would resemble real life. I know it's too much to ask of a romance novella, but still...

This book has one of my favorites heroines written by Claire Kent/Noelle Adams, and I love all of this author's work. Leslie is in her late thirties, mature and self-contained. She tries hard to do the right thing and stay within the bounds of the no-strings relationship she and Josh agreed upon despite her deepening feelings. She is kind and generous, but when she realizes things have become untenable, she breaks up with Josh immediately, with a clear explanation why (what they had was amazing, but she wants something else). She doesn't make demands of him; she respects what he said he wanted and walks away. I love her strength, maturity, and poise. The chemistry between the leads is palpable and their emotional connection evident in all their interactions, especially during sex, which is frequent, well written, and hot. It doesn't hurt that Josh is swoony.
