This book was submitted as a Ph.D. thesis to the Department of History of Johns Hopkins University in 1964. The book tells the story, as the title describes, of the "American Founders" of Robert College, the predecessor to the present Bogazici University. It covers only the first ten years of the College, from 1863-1873.
I lived in Istanbul for two years while my husband was consulting. Not having much to do, I found an old Protestant graveyard and decided to find out as much as I could about those Americans who were buried there. From my own research I learned much about the early New England Missionaries who had their Near East headquarters in the old section of Istanbul. Many of these missionaries are buried in that Cemetery (Protestant Cemetery in Ferikoy-Istanbul). I became acquainted with the son of Keith M. Greenwood, who told me of the upcoming publication of his deceased father's thesis in book form, and ultiimately I obtained a copy and have now read it twice. For anyone interested in Turkey in the 1850-1880 period and the relationship of the Missionaries, as well as the founding of this college, this book will delight them. Otherwise, I can't imagine anyone would have more than a passing interest in it. A few libraries in the US have copies, as does Abebooks.
But since I read it, I wanted to share it with my Goodreads friends!
