The Hate Game

Rate this book
Dear Author,
Can you see the caring smiles on our faces and the love in our eyes? Yes? Well, that’s bulls**t!

We are models and it’s our job to fake emotions. To tell you the truth, I hate his guts. He is arrogant, violent, smug, and manipulative. What’s there to like? And why do I keep bumping into him everywhere I go? He’s my worst nightmare! … or maybe my sweetest dream?

Photo Description:
Two men stand in front of an arched window. They are holding hands, shirtless, adoration for each other in their eyes. What is held behind their gaze, the emotion the camera cannot capture, is the intense feeling of hate one model has for the other. They may be each other’s worst nightmare, but anything is possible, and they just might discover their sweetest dream.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love’s Landscapes" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

Two models in a rivals to lovers theme.

Neither of these men appealed to me. Chase had a sense of entitlement and Heath was a bit of a brute and neither could communicate except in their ongoing snipefest during shoots. They're both rather one dimensional and kind of stereotypical that I'd wished for more character or less cookie cutter. So the set up for rivals was solid and the tumbling into I love yous was sweet, but how we got from A to C--no clue. Underdeveloped transition after all the spewing and grumping. Sexual fantasies do not make the heart grow fonder, just the dick bigger.

I got to the end of the third chapter and couldn't keep going.

The writing is smooth and flows well, but the plot is enemies-lovers and the love interest is horrid. I don't care if the handsome model is insecure he's an arse and his concept of flirting is school-boy note passing, indistinquishable from sexual harrassment.

“I just don’t understand what there is about me that’s not to like.”

Everything.

Contradictory claims are made about Heath - first he's hiding lack of confidence with an arrogant attitude, then he's admitting to Chase that's he's a cocky guy after they get together. I need some consistency! Quite a few corny statements and too many endearments leave me feeling blah about the whole thing.

It was a good story, but not something that will keep up front in your mind. It flowed well, had the angst between the two models. But for me it isn't a story that I feel I will remember in details far down the line.

It is a love-hate relationship between two models, Chase and Heath. Chase 'hates' Heath, that sexy, egotistical jerk. Plus, it seems that Chase is stuck in gigs with Heath all the time. Well, that is because Heath makes sure they have gigs together. Chase is the only man he desires. He is in fact, not some player. People(Chase) may assume that Heath is a player.

Heath knows that Chase is attracted to him but just pushes him away. It is a turn on for Heath. It is a game. He knows for a fact that Chase will be his. This is a cute story to watch them go from miscommunication to being on the same page.

This is going to be one of those stories that you are either going to love the push-pull between the two MCs or you're going to hate how aggressive Heath is towards Chase.

Heath, lover, that's not seduction, that's sexual harassment. Just sayin'.

This was well written and I am sure those who like it will say it's sexy and may even like the chemistry between the MCs (I hated Heath, so I found it creepy).
There was an over abuse of the word lover and quiver(ed), but they were my only niggles when it came to the writing.

This was just a case of not being the story for me. I found Heath to be so overbearing I can't really remember much about Chase.
Thanks to the author for their time and participation in the loves landscapes event.

I'm so bummed this one didn't work for me, because enemies to lovers stories are one of my favorites. I didn't like the MC and there was something about the writing that just didn't flow for me. A lot of the dialogue was awkward and stiff; not like how people actually talk to each other. Too bad because I've enjoyed other Hennessee Andrews stories.

**Grammar**

Chase and Heath met 1 year ago. They are models and rivals. They cant stop bickering and fighting when they meet on jobs. They are handsome, sassy and smart and actually in love with each other. Heath calls this btw them "the hate game", he thinks this was a great foreplay but now he wants more, he wants Chase all for himself and he is sure Chase wants the same, just he is too stubborn to see this, and he is actually right.

{H:“I hated you from the instant we met, but honestly, would have given my soul to the devil for one night with you.”}

{H:“The hate game. That’s what I’ve called the game we have been playing. And now I’m tired of playing. It has been great foreplay, but I want more, need more. I need you.”}

Heath likes to make Chase angry, he loves his pissed face. Chase thinks he is an asshole, but at the same time he tries to make him jealous.
The line btw love and hate is small and soon the 2 men cant stop kissing. The sex scenes are good and i liked them, but the book is too short to give more.

The books ends with them saying they hate each other and cuddling after sex. 2 idiots in love XD

{C:"I hate you"}
{H:"I hate you more."}

I'm totally suck of enemy to lovers themes.

I really enjoying foreplay-banters between Chase & Heath.

They're totally mortal enemies from the beginning...

The love/hate emotions that bounced back and forth between Chase and Heath pleased me in unique way !

Contemporary enemies to lovers story.
Chase and Heath are two models but are the opposite in every way - particularly their temperaments, but that doesn't stop Heath from pursuing Chase, although Chase has made it clear he's not interested. At a photoshoot they are encouraged to kiss, and that changes everything as Chase agrees to go out on a date with Heath which leads on to more. I really enjoyed this one, the love/hate relationship is played out very well. My only erk as the repetative use of the word "Lover" by Heath.

Got to the 53% mark and thought this is not for me so I'd rather skip the rest.
Both MCs were rather horrid, I didn't care for either one. Lots of contradictory information and writing/dialogue didn't seem genuine too me.

This was a very fast read but I had a hard time warming up to the characters, especially Heath. The man was a pig with nothing but sex on his mind. There were a few sentences where he acknowledged that he liked Chase for more than sex; that he was intelligent and worldly, but 100% of his behaviour demonstrated that is was all about sex. Chase started out strong but ultimately gave in. We really don’t know what happened because one minute they are kissing on a photoshoot and Heath asking Chase out to dinner, and the next minute they are in Heath’s apartment. How about a dinner scene where these two actually have a conversation? Other than giving a brief background onb Heath, there isn’t much in the way of character development. There really isn’t much depth to anything in this story and it is completely forgettable.

I didn't like it. The author should have done more for their meeting and falling for each other. It was a love at first sight kind of story but not believable at all, in ny opinion. Heath sounded like a stalker and psycho when he said things like "I know you want me", when all we hear from Chase is "That dude is an awful person, and I hate him".
So more time in betwwen meeting and declaring never ending love would be a plus.

Oh, I wanted to like this story, I truly did, and I actually think the author has something here…

BUT!! The characters felt miscast to me! You get an idea in your head reading the intro and think the story is going to go a certain way, but instead the two men didn’t fit into the slots I thought they would. Chase is the model I expected to be arrogant and hateful but Health (the hick) is the one who plays the villain! Secretly Heath supposedly has bad self-esteem and apparently longs for a real relationship (which I assume is supposed to make him a catch) but mostly he just needles the guy he’s crazy about. The ‘flirting’ from Heath was heavy handed and unsexy, he wasn’t really a likable person. And Chase, the love interest was stubborn and although it could have made for some great tension and hot sex he was instead annoying-corny dialog, stupid reactions, etc. I looked into this author and it appears she’s a serial writer; one that churns out books that are all from the same formula but with the names changed each book (though some have very good ratings!) and this may have colored my thoughts on her writing. This book has potential and perhaps I’ll give one of her others a try down the road but I think this was a miss for me. However I appreciated the author’s participation in LL and the free read!

It was fun but not wow.

The plot was just very light and I thought that it just didn't have enough flare in it. The plot was just ba lacking in a lot of aspects.

One thing in liked though was some of the characters banter. Some were really funny. And their love/hate relationship was fun to indulge in.

And for the record, who wouldn't love two very how gay models going at it? Just imagining it makes me want to combust.

I'm not a fan of enemies to lovers and Heath was pretty much a bully at the beginning but it turned around nicely. Very hot read.

I agree with a lot of the other reviews. Heath was just too much... egotistical asshole that I never cared for. Chase was any better with his put upon attitude.

I liked this one, but then again I'm a sucker for love/hate relationship. I really loved the sexy notes and Heath's cocky attitude.

It started out promisingly. I loved the banter and the tension. But sadly it went from hate to love way too fast. I skipped towards the end.
