Ladies and gentleman, may I present for your reading pleasure the first of the legendary Angelique series, first published in 1957, and one of the finest historical novels ever written.
As many may recall, these were reading rites of passage for many teenagers - visually marketed as French erotica beneath a more respectable cloak of history in its detailing of the underworld of seventeenth-century Paris and the court of Louis XIV.
Time has been kind to this lovely novel, and with a newly translated and expanded edition just released on Kindle, will hopefully enchant a new generation of readers.
This is such a big surprise for me. I have picked this up because my grandma liked it and I wanted to see how it is. I had absolutely no expectations and I ended up loving it.
The story follows Angelique as from 11 until she is 17. You follow her in all her adventures as a child and then going to the monastery with her sisters. The action takes place in France in the 1640s.
Angelique is a unique character. She is a free spirit that likes to run free in the forest. Her best friends are boys and she gets them in a lot of trouble with her ideas of adventures. She is also very smart and cunning - there are so many interesting situations she finds herself in. She surprised me!
I love Angelique's relationships with the other characters. My favourite is her relationships with her father, who is trying so hard to make life easier for his family. They are part of nobility, but they are very poor and he is so confused on what tradition (and society) dictates for a nobleman to do and what he really needs to do to provide for his family.
I will definitely read the next book especially after that ending...
