The center of the story is the impossible love between a priest and nun, and the conflict of religious life and secular life.
Shortly after the Second World War, in a small parish in Dalmatia priests are trying to break the monotony of small town and one of the youngest, Don Jere, devises a way to strengthen the faith of the people.He thinks that it would be good to replace the statue of the Virgin Mary with a real live nun who would act as a statue and occasionally move her eyes in order to convince the local people in the existence of God. Don Jere asks the head of the nearby monastery to send him a nun, and they send sister Magdalena, a former circus trapeze artist (her stage name was Glorija, real name Jagoda) who after a close encounter with death decided to turn to God and become a nun.
Ranko Marinković (22 February 1913 – 28 January 2001) was a Croatian novelist and dramatist.
Born in Komiža on the island of Vis (then a part of Austria-Hungary), Marinković's childhood was marked by World War I. He later earned a degree in philosophy from the University of Zagreb. In the 1930s, he began to make his name in Zagreb literary circles with his plays and stories.
His career was interrupted briefly during World War II. When his native island was occupied by fascist Italy, he was arrested in Split and interned on the Italian mainland. After the capitulation of Italy, Marinković went to Bari, and then to the El Shatt refugee camp where he made contacts with Tito's Partisans. After the war, he spent time working in the theatre.
His best known works are Glorija (1955), a play in which he criticised the Catholic Church, and Kiklop (1965), a semi-autobiographical novel in which he described the gloomy atmosphere among Zagreb intellectuals before the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia. Kiklop later was adapted into a 1982 movie directed by Antun Vrdoljak.
In the last years of his life Marinković embraced the political views of Franjo Tuđman, and became a member of the Croatian Democratic Union.
Možda bi bilo najjednostavnije reći ovo---Marinković je odličan pisac, ima onaj sirovi talent za pisanje koji je ponekad toliko bitan. Njegovi likovi su ljudski, uvjerljivi, zanimljivi, a on uvijek uspije zaviriti u ono što je najintimije u čovjeku, ponekad sa nekim ironijskim odmakom, a ponekad čini mi se ipak sa nekakvim suosjećanjem.
Glorija mi je jedna od najboljih drama hrvatske književnosti, obrađuje s mnogo dinamike i duha sukob ideala i stvarnosti, pojedinca i društva, religije i osobe, duhovnog i tjelesnog, umjetnosti i zbilje, a posebno tu dolazi do izražaja, barem meni, Jagoda i njena unutarnja prevrtanja, jednostavno psihološka karakterizacija glavne junakinje je vrhunska.
Osim izvrsne karakterizacije različitih tipova osobnosti i njigovog sukoba, kao i uvijek, iskren i dobar opis života u maloj sredini i orginalnosti nekih pojava takvih mjesta ( Marinković općenito izvrsno opisuje otočnu sredinu). Dijalozi mi zvuče prirodno, kao da teku sami od sebe...Pitam se kako bi bilo pogledati Gloriju u kazalištu. Je li ovo jedna od onih drama u kojima se više uživa u čitanju? Ima nešto filozofsko u Gloriji, no ipak čini mi se kako bi "živjela" i mogla imati svoje ostvarenje i u teatru.
Što ljudi sve ne čine iz uvjerenja, i iz kojeg čega drugog...ponekad je teško razumijeti ljudsku prirodu. No, ova drama se tome približava, nekakvom razumijevanju, iako ne teži i objašnjenju, a možda me baš i to privlači. Neke se stvari možda i ne mogu objasniti.
Teatar u teatru, okršaj sa religioznošću i religijskim fantzmama, sveštenik i djevojka koja radi u cirkusu, pitanje identiteta, igranje uloga... jedan od najboljih časova vježbi iz Hrvatske književnosti 3.
Marinković je odličan i kad piše drame. Njegov specifičan humor i osjećaj za ljudsku patnju uvijek nekako ispliva na površinu. Neke su drame ovdje prosječne, a neke odlične; sve skupa, isplati se pročitati svaku barem jednom.
