One hundred years.
Two love triangles.
A timeless passion.

Maddox McLeod has always enjoyed the ladies. But a long history of casual lovers masks a cutting betrayal which still wounds him. When Maddox is called back to his hometown of Contention City to tend to his dying father, he must briefly leave his true brothers, the Defiant MC, and confront the agonies of the past. Maddox has spent a decade trying to forget that once there was a girl who held his heart in her hand. And once he had a brother who committed the ultimate treachery.

Contention City itself endures among the ghosts and ruins of the old west. In 1888, young schoolteacher Annika Larson traveled to the Arizona Territory and found herself caught between the passions of two fiery brothers. One a gunslinger, the other a lawman, their differences were irreconcilable.

The scars of the shattering chain of events which followed reverberate into the present as Maddox finds himself faced with impossible choices, and a timeless love…

Part contemporary romance, part historical western, this intertwined tale of love and redemption is a stand alone novel with no cliffhanger.

Newly edited! Contains explicit language and sexual situations not recommended for readers under the age of 18.

I'm a huge fan of insta-love , grunge era flannel, my vintage Kenmore sewing machine, embroidered dishcloths and absolutely everything that has to do with 1980s pop culture (i.e. leg warmers, scrunchies, big hair, early Madonna, boom boxes, wood paneled walls, stonewash jeans, etc).

If you believe in Happily Ever After and improbable love stories, chances are I'll love you too!!

3.5 unsatisfied Stars

I have heard the saying "Always leave them wanting more" but this book didn't just leave me wanting more it left me feeling totally unsatisfied. This book is like a selfish lover. Just when it's starting to feel good, you are really getting into it, the end is in site, your burning and shaking oh it's gonna be a good one Wham it's done and you are left going WTF? Is that it???? Yup that' s what reading Remember Me is like!

 photo remember me 4_zpszr3dorpl.jpg

I am going to keep this short and to the point. This book has two parallel stories. One set in the past and one in the present. Both stories are about two brothers in love with the same woman and the woman loving the bad boy brother, but marrying and or sleeping with the seemingly good brother over a misunderstanding . I don't really care for the whole love triangle thing in general it just really depends on how it is written, but it worked well in this story. Both love stories had great potential. The characters are all likable. The plot is interesting. The problem I have with this book is both stories felt lacking, like they are missing important details and rushed unsatisfied endings. It's sad really because I was really enjoying it then it was just over and I was like really? Really? like a cliffhanger without another book to finish it up. Instead of cramming the two stories in one book there should have been two books. Oh well whatevs!!!

Historic recurrence is the repetition of similar events in history

We’ve all heard about history repeating itself and through the ages there have been many examples. This book tells the heart wrenching love story of two brothers and the women they loved. One romance occurs over 100 years ago (1888) and one in the present. The setting is the same, Contention City, Arizona and the present characters are connected in some way to characters from the past.

Past –
Annika Larson travels to the Wild West from the east to be a school teacher. Fate puts her in the path of Mercer, an outlaw who is part of a brotherhood of other outlaws who skirt the law and live dangerously. There is that immediate connection or spark between the two but Annika resists it. Then she is thrown into Mercer’s brother’s arms, James the town marshal, the supposedly good guy. Both men fall in love with Annika. There’s strife between the brothers even before Annika came into the scene. They love each other but there’s so much conflict since they grew to be men. Annika makes a very bad decision based on her own incorrect interpretation of something that occurs with Mercer and marries James in a fit of anger. An action that she will forever regret.

Present –
Maddox McLeod is a member of the Defiant MC, a band of brothers who skirt the law and are not necessarily the good guys. His brother, Jensen, is a cop. They were super close growing up but a woman split them apart. Maddox’s first love, Gabriella de Campo, also made a terrible decision that forever changed all of their lives.

The book covers a tale of vanquished love and an eerie case of history repeating itself 100 years later. I do not usually like books that jump from the past to the present but the author did a magnificent job of drawing me into this story and marveling at the similarities between the brothers and the women they loved. I was enthralled but I was also sad. I felt their emotions and their heartache. There’s suspense, mystery and angst figuring out who is the bad guy and trying to figure out if there will be a HEA.

This is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. It’s really not about the MC, other than the parallel of Maddox being in a band of brothers who love and support him. The story occurs in Maddox’s hometown and the MC shows up at the end to help him (present) just as Mercer’s band of outlaws show up to help him at the end.

Two wonderful love stories that make you question why people are so quick to make the wrong decisions that make them miserable and wreck their lives. At least some people do get a chance to correct the past and live happily ever after.

I highly recommend this book and would rate it more than 5 stars for me.

Ms. Brent has become one of my favorite authors. There are two stories included in this book. Both about two brothers and the love of a woman. 5 past (gold) and present (gold) ★★★★★

Contention City was a Boomtown in the 1880's due to Gold found in the Scorpion Mountains there is one thing that peeved about this but I will get to that later. Annika Larson is moving West to become a teacher when she is held up by The Dane Gang. Where she sees the Outlaw and Gunslinger Mercer Dolan. Arriving she meets the Marshall of the town James Dolan. Yeppers the brother of Mercer.

Present Day Maddox is back to Contention City as his father is dying. He swore that he would never go back due to his brothers and his girls betrayal. In Know Me and Promise Me I didn't really like Maddox McLeod. But he grows on me as his character grows. It goes to show that the young are impressionable and that a lot of wrongs will be righted.

The Chapters flipped back between the past and the present and every time I was getting into the story it would change but the mix worked well. This book had everything in it love, betrayal, redemption and that when push comes to shove blood is thicker than water no matter what. I was really sad to finish this book and it kept me up all night just thinking about it.
Contention City doesn't actually exist any more it is now a ghost town where straw balls run through the empty streets.

Ms. Brent has a unique writing style but keeps you captured right from the beginning. I hope that this series continues.

Very interesting juxtaposition of a modern MC story about Maddox from the Defiant MC and his old love and his family with an eerily similar story in the same town over 100 years before. And both second chance at romance/sex stories are interesting and hot.

We had meet Mad(dox) in the two previous Defiant MC books, and he was pretty much an alpha sexy sexist douchebag. And he had some of those tendencies at the start of this one too, but as he gets back into touch with Gaby, who was his first love but who ended up marrying his brother, he starts to believe in love again. But that doesn't mean he doesn't carry on in his lusty and sexy ways throughout most of the story.

The second storyline in this interesting book is also of two brothers and the woman that got between the two. The storylines mirror each other in some ways, especially with Mercer being in love with Annika but then she marries his brother. Same story, same place, same gold, same flood, same ending.

Glad I found this author. Have enjoyed all three books in this series so far, and it's amazing how different the stories are.

Wow, what a wonderful book! The author did a great job by weaving the two stories from history and present together. It combines two genres I like most and I would say it was one of the best books I've read so far. I don't know what to read next because this story and the characters are still on my mind, especially the ones from 1888/90, I wish I could read more about them. I definitely will read all the other books in this series. I can highly recommend this book, it can be read as standalone, I didn't miss anything significant by starting with this one.

Wow. This book rocked my world. I was not expecting that at all!! Cora Brent is officially one of my favorite authors.

This was an extremely different book, but in a really good way. I loved the way this was written in the fact that I wasn't able to put it down and was constantly guessing how the two stories connected.

What a BEAUTIFUL story that had me in tears through the whole thing. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

well sad to say that I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did all the others I have jumping back in time to basically read the same story twice. I understand history repeats itself but I want to read more of this day not the past.

This was actually 2 short books combined into one. I was having a hard time with the constant back and forth. Each chapter switched stories, time periods, characters etc and it was jarring. As soon as I got invested, it would switch again. So I decided to stop reading the historical story and just read the modern day one. The reason for this was 2 fold. First, I wanted to see the confrontation between Maddox and Gaby and the brother and find out how their drama went down. Second, I normally LOVE historical westerns but the characters were so unrealistic. The 1800s virgin school teacher and the gunslinger who robs her fell into absurd insta-love and this prim, proper eastern woman just took off her clothes the first time she saw the gunslinger after he held her up at gunpoint. Uhh WHAT?! And the second time they have a convo she’s begging for dick?? Again, this is post civil war era when women still wore corsets and were never alone with an unrelated male and now she’s a horny stripper? And the “bad boy” respects her virginity too much to deflower her? I can’t. I DNF the historical story and gave the modern story 3.5 stars.

Surprisingly good, but...

The duality of this story was interesting. I'm not a fan of historical or western romance at all. but the way it bounced back and forth between 100 years ago and tied the past in with the present brought fresh realizations with each chapter. I looked forward to each new discovered correlation.
As much as I want to give this book 4 stars, there are just way too many noticeable typos and grammatical errors. A fresh edit would most definitely do wonders for this story.

Enjoyable but difficult to get through the beginning

This is a slow burn book. I prefer ones that capture my attention and keep it from the beginning. I would recommend due to the conclusion being fantastic.

Fun, romantic read

Cora Brent's books are always a fun, romantic read. The motorcycle club series is interesting as it gives a peek into a different, maybe misunderstood lifestyle.

I wasn't a huge fan of the historical intertwining if stories, I did, however, like Maddox and Gabby's story. It is a second chance romance, but not without its tribulations.

Two stories inside one book! Both stories were about love, betrayal and redemption set during two different time periods in the same city, Contention City. The time period alternates from 1870 to Present day each chapter.

1870's storyline features a love triangle between Annika (new school teacher), James (Contention City's Marshall of Law, brother of Mercer) and Mercer (Local outlaw, brother of James). When Annika encounters Mercer she is immediately attracted to him. They kick-it briefly, but then a misunderstanding occurs and she ends up with James. There's also an interesting sub-plot about mining for gold and the town's bad guys.

Present day storyline features Maddox (Member of Defiant Motorcycle Club, brother to Jensen), Jensen (Contention City's Lawman, brother to Maddox) and Gabby (ex-wife of Jensen). During their childhood, Maddox and Gabby are a couple. A misunderstanding occurs and Gabby ends up with Jensen. Maddox is so hurt and upset, he leaves town for many years. He returns to Contention City to be with his dying father. He tries to deal with Jensen, Gabby, his father and his feelings. There's also a sub-plot about gold and the town's bad guys.

Both stories were pretty much the same. The endings were very emotional, but left you in a good place. I typically do not like historical romance books. However, I found myself enjoying Annika/James/Mercer's story better than Maddox's story! This book did not contain the antics of the Defiant MC. While they made a very brief appearance, this book was all about these two very similar love triangles. Interesting concept!

Why Not 5 Stars?

I did not feel a close connection between Maddox and Gabby. I felt the deep love/attraction between Annika and Mercer, but it was not there with Maddox. I never understood Gabby's love for Maddox. I could not understand how . The childhood / early love connection did not come across as it was being told. It was just off.

I wanted more of the MC and did not get it! I realize that this book took a different direction, but I was hoping for some easy riding and gritty bikers!! *sigh* I hope this series continues (present day please).

Wow...what an awesome and very different read for me! I just knew I would love it though...after reading Promise Me and really liking Cora Brent's style of writing it was a no-brainer to pick up this one.
Two pairs of brothers...two strong but emotionally sensitive women...a gang of friends of dubious intentions...hidden treasure...and you have all the elements for two parallel stories (one in the old west and one in present day) of brotherly love, betrayal, love lost and found and redemption.
This was unconventional in that it wasn't really an historical western or a biker romance but rather just two tales of brothers who fall in love with the same woman and despite years of rivalry and at times hatred for each other, there is a deep understanding of flesh and blood sibling love, no matter what else might have occured. In each story, one brother is a lawman and the other an outlaw of sorts but as we find out they are more similar than not...each possessing a part of them that is goodness while also having a bit of not so good intentions inside.
I really can't explain too much more about the book without ruining the twists and giving too much away but this is one of those stories that does have a common thread and tie together in not just a spiritual way but also a tangible one.
I actually found myself really loving the old days western chapters almost more than the modern day Maddox ones...they were really exciting and sexy (something about an armed, masked bandit is really kinda hot)!
I would recommend this one to biker and cowboy romance readers...and maybe even just anyone that may enjoy a good love story that survives the test of time.

I have read all of the books in this series. Still some unclaimed bikers left, so maybe more books to come.

This book ties in a story from the past to a story in the present. I liked it, but didn't really buy into the situation about keeping an old discovered chest of gold nuggets as a crime, unless you didn't want to pay up to the IRS. If it was found on someone else's private property or maybe on 'public land' (like the community historic graveyard) then maybe it is theft to keep it and keep it secret. However, we can't tell from the story if any of that is the case, so the secret stuff seems too extreme. And really, who is to say where it was actually found, making the reactions in the story way too extreme. It was still good, don't get me wrong... I can actually see a few small-town jokers doing exactly what is in the story.

Also, there are still MANY TYPOS!!!!!!!!!!!!! After three books, I would have thought the author would find a proof-reader! FIND A PROOF READER!!! Plenty of people will tell you where the mistakes are for a free book! It makes me so angry to pay money for a book and it's full of typos (sometimes more than one on the same page) and sentences that don't make sense.

That being said, Cora Brent is a very good writer and I do recommend this series.

have to say I loved how Cora has written 2 love stories in one book to keep the Tales of the old west gold mines.
Maddox was born and raised in the town of Contention City Az and he knew of the old tales of the gold mines . He and his brother would explore the caves. Maddox was as always loved Gabriela but when he was in high school he was hanging out without some friends and something happened and it sent Gabriela in the arms of his brother . she broke his heart and he hated his brother. Maddox left town and found the Defiant mc club and they became his family. So when he gets a call from his brother telling him he needed to come home and see his father before it was to late will he take the chance of running into the one he truly has never gotten over? I loved this one as it has two stories to tell and both kept you wanting more.

This was an amazing book! I started right before dinner and I couldn't put it down. Finally finished it around 430 in the morning! I am not usually a fan of historical romance, but this book has changed my mind! I loved how the past and present intertwined throughout the novel. There was plenty if steam, and I am so glad I finally got to read about Maddox. He was an awesome tough guy. Loved seeing his sweeter side. I would definitely recommend this book and the other books in the series, if you haven't read them. Incredible author. Love how she makes you feel like you are right there with her characters. Can't wait for the next book!

Maddox is a sexy biker with heavy issues rattling around in his head. Life gets complicated and he needs to see his father before he passes from this world. Coming home brings a lot more issues then maybe he can deal with but he can't avoid them even though that had been his plan when he decided he needed closure with his father with what little time there was left.

A good storyline with enough side issues to carry a good vibe as you read. Liked the characters and it jumps from the past to the present historically which confused me until I got a feel for it.

Good read.

WELL WRITTEN AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED

I absolutely was impressed and loved the way the two stories were written plus the characters could NOT have been any better. This author is one of the best. This book was devoured by me in one day as I couldn't put it down.
I have read more of her books and I will read all of them, I just haven't yet.
I urge you to read this book and read some of the others.

HAPPY READING MY BOOK FRIENDS. THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING READ FROM A GREAT AUTHOR.

Love this story. I love how they went two eras of the gold mind in 1800 and present. This story was amazing. It's like reading to stories. I lived in the past of Annika coming to Arizona to become a teacher and meeting the two brothers. Choices that she had to make between the good or the bad brother. And of course the present, you finally read about Maddox. You finally realize how he became so distant on having relationships and find about his past. Cora brings a different type of writing and it was great to read.

So, if you're thinking this is going to be an MC book. It's not. If you think this is going to be like the other Defiant books, it's not.

At first I was having some buyer's remorse because this seemed to be a train wreck of pioneer times and present day all discombobulated and then finally I started to see threads and both ends of the timeline were sort of coming together and I found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would.

A change of setting for the Defiant MC, as one of the brothers, Maddox must return to his hometown to visit his dying father. Maddox grew up in Contention City and left behind a world of heartache.

His former lover, who is the mother of his nephew, broke his heart and although he doesn't want to see her, inevitably he does and sparks fly immediately . . .

The story is intertwined with another love triangle from the past.

Entertaining.

Still good but not as good as other Cora Brent books...

Has all the elements that make for a great Cora Brent romance novel. Great writing that includes an in depth look at the characters and the history. This book melds a romance that takes place in the past to one in the future. Well told with a fluid transition between the past and the present lovers. No major complaint just didn't feel too intrigued by the western plot. Not Cora Brent's fault.

This was a disappointment for Maddox's story. I found the dual brother storyline from past to present to be unnecessary. Would have preferred the author to devote the entire book solely to the protagonists. While some of the historic detail was interesting, I took away from the plot versus adding to the overall book.

I didn't think I was going to like this story because of the dual timelines, but I actually loved it because of that! I think it's brilliant; the dual POV, hers in the past, his in the present, but they essentially tell the same story. And it was an exciting story in both timelines. Definitely, deserving of a 5 star rating!

I am usually not a fan of historical books (unless they non fiction) but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. Because it goes back and forth between the past in the present I was concerned it would be choppy and lose its steady flow, but it fit so well together and never once seemed awkward! I cannot wait to read more (at least I hope there is more in the series)!!

The Best of the the Three!

I really loved the mix of the old with the new. It showed history and how it repeats. I loved every bit of both mirroring tales, and I was sitting on the edge of my seat, anticipating the next part, the entire time while reading this book. I was left with two bittersweet endings that left me wanting more!!!

Well this story was different! Ironic how the past reflects our future. Definitely not your typical MC story. It was good but not what I expected. I think I would have enjoyed it more if the setting was all in the present...but it was interesting to read about the past.
