Reachers #2

Border Lines

Rate this book
"We all remember that kid in Piccadilly. That determined look he had on his face as he willed all those people to him. Just using his mind he pulled them close then blew them all to pieces. It could be anyone. Your neighbour, your friend, your lover. Remain vigilant. Reachers are everywhere."

When the perfect job comes up Charlie doesn't think twice about taking it. This is the break he's been looking for and nobody, not even the rest of his team, can persuade him otherwise.

The job means working for an old enemy and crossing the border into London. Both are risky but Charlie has no idea how high the stakes really are.

The team will have to confront their past, each other and a killer who is closer than they realise. But can they all make it out of the city alive?

This is the second instalment in the Reacher series.

I don't have time for a lengthy review but it has become one of my favourite series. At the time I'm writing this, I already read the next and, seemingly, last of the series - alas...

Border Lines by LE Fitzpatrick is set in apocalyptic London. It is the story of three people with extraordinary skills, hunted by the police. They're called Reachers and they join together to solve whatever their leader deems fit. In this case, persuading three nayers to change their minds and support a lady who wants the security detail for the border. Will Charlie's philandering ways land him in trouble? His brother John thinks so. Wait for a big surprise or two at the end when even Rachel can't see through someone's facade. A jolly good read. And I've asked for more.

Another action packed, suspenseful Reacher read. Border Lines is book 2 in the series and I highly recommend you start with The a Running Game. The key players are back and the who done it game is on. This book kept me guessing right up until the end. Looking forward to see how it all plays out.

I love sequels that don’t feel the need to recap every little thing from the first book before moving on with the story. While you should read the first book in the series first, this one is very much its own thing. Same characters, yes, but the setting quickly becomes different and the job, dangers, and relationships are different.
The dynamics between Rachel, Charlie, and John are great. The interactions between the brothers feel and sound the same as they did in the first book, but with Rachel added to the team they’re now more protective and a bit more loving. Rachel isn’t afraid anymore and has her confidence bolstered by the brothers, and I really liked how these three worked together.
The story’s world again feels very dystopian, and there’s some interesting commentary here about the health care system in particular. The “whodunit” aspect adds a nice mystery element. The ongoing background tension with characters from the first book ties in nicely to keep the books connected and the overarching story moving forward, but it was balanced well with the brand new plot of this book.
The writing is great, witty, and sets the mood perfectly for the story. I eagerly look forward to the next book.

I absolutely loved the Running Game, the first book in the Reachers #1 but the question is, did book two have the same effect on me? Of course it bloody did if not more so. Hooked from page one and could not get enough. The Running Game saw the Smith brothers save Rachel and escape S’aven. Now they are back, bigger and better then ever with a new team member on board and another job on the arisen…

Unfortunately for John and Rachel, it’s Charlie’s job to find the jobs and take them on and there’s nothing they can say about it even if they think it’s a bad idea. They need the money, as simple as that and the only thing that’s important is finding Charlie’s daughter.

Ten months have passed and they find themselves back in S’aven and Rachel’s not sure how she feels about that. Then again she’s on the run and with the two best men she knows and trusts. They soon find themselves crossing the border to London with one thing on their mind ~ getting the job done. They have three men to take care of on the instruction of Riva Morris.

One is a major who has it coming anyway. One is an editor who is already missing and one is a doctor who holds a secret of his own.

In the meantime, there’s a serial killer on the lose and dead prostitutes are turning up left right and centre whilst the medical supply trucks are being hijacked. On top of that, there’s new cops in town, Wade Adams, special Reacher division and his new recruit, Mark Bellamy, remember him? Rachel’s cop boyfriend framed for his partner’s killing. They are convinced the prostitute serial killer is a Reacher and they have the Smith brothers card marked.

Roxy’s back too, making up the 4th member of the Smith brothers and this time he has a point to prove but not before John shoots him, landing him up in hospital. There’s also the Reachers that want Rachel to join them and it seems they’ll go to great lengths to get what they want.

Charlie finds himself in deep water with the missing editors wife and Rachel is getting too close to comfort with the doctor. It seems the only one seeing straight is John and Roxy!

So is the hijacking of medical supplies, dead prostitutes and Riva’s job connected? Well you’ll have to read it to find out but I can tell you, this had me hooked. I could not put it down and it had me constantly guessing whodunit. I didn’t guess it either!

I love LE Fitzpatrick’s ability to create such brilliant story lines with something that isn’t possible but has you believing it could be. Xmen move over! I seriously cannot wait for more… Oh and it ends in a cliffhanger!

Life goes on in S'aven, with murders, heists and constant danger.
The Smith brothers and Rachel, return to earn money on a new, challenging job; while dodging old and new enemies.

I received a free copy in return for an honest review.
We return to the Reacher's story several months after the end of The Running Game. The Smith brothers and Rachel have been constantly moving, to keep ahead of the game, and making their team more solid.
Their return to S'aven spells trouble, as the fear of Reachers is as high as ever, and people haven't forgotten that they killed Pinky Morris.

I really enjoyed this. There are several threads that were established in the first book, and you get to follow what Roxy, Riva and Mark are all up to.
I was really glad that Riva was back, I liked her in the first book, and you got hints of how awesome she could be, if she wasn't hindered by here husband, Pinky. Now she's stepped up to be the queen of S'aven.
I felt so sorry for Mark, one of the few honest cops that S'aven had, and he's been branded a cop-killer and sent to hard labour for life! It didn't cross my mind what would happen to the sweet but stupid Mark, after the end of the last book. I found it really interesting where his story took him, as he lines up to potentially be a great ally, or a thorn in the side of the Reachers for the rest of the series.

We get to see London for the first time, which really exaggerates the rich/poor divide. The rich continue to live, with an ignorance and disdain of the poor who work to provide their food, etc.
When Rachel enters the hospital, it provides a perfect example of how the corrupt country provides an excess of resources to the rich, that are in control; and doesn't care about the struggling over-loaded hospital only a few miles away, on the other side of the wall.

The Crime plot is fantastic, and always kept me guessing. The different threads all came together in a way I didn't expect. Fitzpatrick runs an array of suspects in front of you, each looking increasingly guilty, before snapping away.

I would definitely recommend this, and I can't wait for the next part of the series!

Ms. Fitzpatrick expertly constructs a dark dystopian world of intrigue, murder and mayhem. She effortlessly ensnares you and forces your gaze in the direction of her choosing. While pulling you from your comfort zone, the plot continues to be as unpredictable as life itself.

Twisted and tortured souls struggle to maintain a sense of morality and battle for their very survival. Enemies become unwilling allies leaving you with ever morphing questions of friend or foe. From every shadow someone is planning and plotting their early demise. The world is a dark and dangerous place. There are feelings of despair and helplessness within those who inhabit it. The strong prey upon the weak, and those left struggle to rise above it.

Once again I am left with a feeling of being transported by the mastery of this author's writing. Her writing style captures the reader feeling as though you are actually there. Her characters are well written with very believable wit, humor and sometimes barbed dialog. Her plot lacks transparency and keeps you happily turning pages. You feel as though you've joined a journey with three people who fight for a world that is fighting against them. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this gripping series.

I loved this book! The characters, who I struggled with in the first book, were perfect in this one. I understood who they were and what a Reacher was. Characters from The Running Game came over and I felt as if they were familiar friends to me. Particularly, Roxy who I really got a feel for this time, and now understood who he was.

S'haven was the poorer city on the outskirts of London and all set in the future. The border lines referred to surround London and the guards that patrol them are sometimes brutal. People literally get away with murder.

Riva, the wife of Pinky Morris, who was murdered in the first book, now has his empire. She wants to run the borders, but three people will vote against her. That's where the brothers, Charlie and John, along with Rachel come in.

And running parallel to the story a killer on the loose, a suspected Reacher. Rachel's ex-husband and his boss are working to find out who the killer is.

I really did love this book and I loved the world L E Fitzpatrick had created. Her storytelling was magical. I was in London and S'haven inside my imagination because of her descriptions and knowledge of the area she created. Wow! Just a brilliant read

Border Lines reached me quite a few months after The Running Games and I thought I'd have to go back and review the first installment, just to refresh myself. I'm so glad that I was wrong! L E Fitzpatrick has a gift for getting your head right back to where the previous novel ended and you're into this dystopian world without a problem at all.

>Book Review – Border Lines -

>I received this book from the author and Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock. I am an independent reviewer. This is the second book in the the Reachers Series and ends in a cliffhanger.

>I did not read the first book in this series, so I had some confusion as to the relationships between the three main characters, John, Charlie and Rachel. A lot of events from the first book are referenced in this story. After a bit, I was able to figure most everything out, but that figuring took something away from this story. I still have two unanswered questions, how far in the future is this story set and what was the relationship between Rachel and the cop? He seemed to really love her and she seemed to have been saved from him. I never could figure that out.

>I read very quickly, yet this book took me five whole days to get through. The mystery of who is killing the women wasn't very compelling to me. The side job that Charlie, Rachel and John take on is kind of lame. Sway council voting? There was a fling with Charlie and a suspect, but I wouldn't call it romantic, at all! The characters of John, Charlie and Rachel were very one dimensional. The most interesting character was the cop and Rachel's ex, Mark. His feelings are shared and the reader can feel his confusion and hurt over Rachel.

>This book is appropriate for a young adult audience to adult audience (16+). This book is hard for me to recommend.

Reachers are hiding within a broken country. S'aven is the shanty town that surrounds London, like a puddle of piss, with Londoners heading over the border by day to slum it with the cheap whores while s'aveners are heading in the opposite direction, if they can get a border pass, hoping to earn enough money to live - it's all unjust and unfair, but they all have the same hatred and fear of the Reachers. Government and media propaganda, and a few psychopaths, help fuel the murderous reputations of people like Rachel and the Smith brothers, Charlie and John - that and they do actually keep killing people...just saying.
Now another killer, a catagory 5 Reacher, is on the loose strangling hookers for kicks. Riva Morris is back and looking to take control of the border for her own gain, Roxy wants back in with the Smiths and their new sister despite selling her out to Riva in the past, and Mark, Rachel's ex boyfriend and now ex-cop since he took the rap for his murdered partner...just saying!...is out of the work camp and hot on the Reacher's tails. All of the players collide in this, the second novel in the Reacher series. (There's also a short story set between these two books which is worth a read!)
This story is fast paced, well written and imaginative. Recommended for fans of paranormal/adult/crime/dystopia

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

John, Charlie, and Rachel are back in this second installment of the Reacher Series. This is part of a series and should be read after "The Running Game", it's not a stand-alone. It's very well-written, easy-to-read, and fast-paced.

I loved "Border Lines". I loved seeing the dynamics of the group Rachel and the Smith brothers formed. I was a little frustrated at the roles they each played. I didn't like that Charlie took over as head of the group. I felt that he wasn't taking safety or the feelings/thoughts of John and Rachel into consideration. He seemed to be too focused on the end goal and would do anything to reach that goal, even sacrifice John and Rachel. I do have to say I was a little disappointed that they treated each other as family. I so wanted a romance between John and Rachel. I was totally shocked at the ending. I never saw it coming. Well, certain things I did, others I didn't. I also loved Roxy. He's turning out to be one of my favorite characters.

L.E. Fitzpatrick does such a wonderful job creating new worlds that I found myself looking for more of her work to read. I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment of the Reacher series.

This is the second installment in the reacher series and cannot be read as a standalone.
The book continues the story of Rachel and the Smith brothers. It takes you from s`haven and into London where Mark (Rachels ex-fiance cop) and his new boss are looking for Reachers and stumble upon the cases of murdered prostitutes and they believe that Rachel and brothers are to blame.
Riva Morris is in charge now and sends the three of them to London to deal with the apposes of the deal that she needs to control the borders. The institute against Reachers are also on their tail. Will they manage to shake them all from catching them or will there be dire consequences.
I found that the characters were somewhat flat feeling but the story is a good one. You will definitely need the next installment as it does leave you hanging.

L. E. Fitzpatrick has produced a sequel to The Running Game, with a tale that says to me, give me more. The Reachers are gifted humans in dystopian London. The author has written an adventure and mystery in a fast read book that makes you wonder what comes next, and at the same time, if such a society could be possible. I think you'll like both books and the characters develop and the story expands. Read both together. You can because they're both written and I have been told a new one is on the way. Hurrah.
