Storm

Rate this book
A blue sky darkens; the yellow sun is streaked with clouds, and flash! lightning in the hills mark the start of a wet and wild summer storm. Simple, poetic language gives a child's-eye view of the wild fury and then the return of calm after an exciting natural phenomenon, rendered in sweeping, soft-hued oil paintings.

This is a great book with wonderful illustrations. This book is constructed in a poetic manner, with easily read sentences. The illustrations help tell the story of a storm hitting a small village. The illustrations dominate each page. There are a few sentences on each page, but the reader mostly notices the illustrations.

This book uses many words that mimic sounds such as: "bam," "crash," and "rat-a-tat-tat." I think this would be a great book to use with beginning readers for phonic awareness and literacy. Since the book is written as poetry, there is a fluidity to this book that can definitely help a reader gain fluency in his or her reading.

The book is about a storm, but also introduces other elements of nature including animals, the sky, fields, the sunshine and trees. It is a calming book with soothing colors. This might be a good book to do as a read aloud to introduce poetry, ecosystem studies or how some words are meant to mimic sounds. Also, it can be used to show students how authors use specific words to produce imagery in their works.

I nice simple story about a storm on a farm. I borrowed this book from the library because of the quality of the realistic full-page color illustrations, and they are quite impressive. My 3 1/2 year old son liked it, although he was a little apprehensive when he saw the title: Storm ("Storms are scary", he told me ...) After the storm the sun comes out! :-)
