13 new stories about TESTING the bonds of fellowship on fantastical worlds

The bonds of friendship and fellowship are key to many fine fantasy and science fiction novels, most notably Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring. Now top tale-spinners offer their own unique takes on fellowship in thirteen original stories, featuring a girl who finds her best friend through a portal to another world, an adventure on an alternate Earth where a not-quite Holmes and Watson take on a fascinating challenge, a group of urban mages playing the "True Game" for high stakes, a squire determined to help his master's ghost fulfill his final mission, and more. Together, these stories dramatically illustrate how fellowships can alter destiny and change worlds.

This was in my ebook library and I didn't remember whether I had read it. It's a theme anthology with the theme of friendship and/or partnership. The first story didn't seem familiar but some of the later ones did. Only one was immediately memorable, "The Quest" by Donald J. Bingle about a group of computer gamers who decide to meet up in person. That one wasn't comfort reading but did make me say "Oh yes, I've read this before".

My favorite story was "Trophy Wives" by Nina Kiriki Hoffman because of its feminist overlay. Most of the others were enjoyable.

This book was okay. Two stories, Almost Brothers and Eye of Heaven were really good but the rest were so so. Truth be told, I only read half of the book because I skimmed the rest of the stories but they just didn't seem to be what I was looking for at this time.

My review is honestly only based on "Concerning a Gambit of Fraternity" by Steven Schend. The story was great fun and I've found myself re-reading it on multiple occasions.
