This is a great introductory resource for crocheters who want to make socks. It includes measurement tables to be sure of correct sizing and fit. It includes visual directions of all the stitches used in all the patterns. There are a variety of sock patterns organized with increasing difficulty and complexity throughout the book.

As I've mentioned frequently in my book reviews, my source of books is primarily my local library. However, when I find a book that I really like and that I feel strongly that I will want to reference and use repeatedly in the future, I will purchase it (or at least put it on my Wish List and get it in the future). This is one such book. I will need to purchase a hands-free lighted large magnifying glass I can have between my eyes and my hands while I work on pieces that use small gauge hooks and thin yarn/thread. And, I think I need to have my vision checked. That's one of the prices of reaching age 50, wearing corrective lenses for 40 years and being diabetic. Hiho. Yes, it is a bit frustrating that that I now have plenty of time to take on fine crochet work like socks, doilies and filet work but my vision is standing in the way right now.

If my rating suddenly drops sometime next week, it's because I finally finished the sock pattern I'm trying out from this book, and it turned out terrible. From this book I have learned that 1) crocheted socks take a ton of different stitches, like at minimum five per pattern 2) sock heels are assholes to make 3) they take a lot longer to make than you probably think. I'm on day three and haven't even finished the sock cuff yet.

I think this will be a really good book to start socks with. Although I am a very good crocheter and knitter, I have always been intimidated by socks (and gloves). I thought you had to knit them (crochet wasn't elastic enough) and there were those horrible gussets and stuff. Well, now here's a book for crocheted socks! I figure once I make a crocheted pair, I will gain enough confidence to try a knit pair, and I'm headed for sock nirvana.... This book doesn't provide many patterns I'm interested in, but even a few are better than none and are my confidence ticket to knit socks. If you crochet and want to try socks, this book may be just what you're looking for. There are conservative styles (my type) and the individual toe or separate big toe style for the wild-and-crazy type. There is even a pair of eyelash yarn cuff ones for a Hollywood glamor-girl type. I won't say these socks will be perfectly easy to turn out from step one, but the instructions seem thorough and for those of us with sock fitting problems (too-wide feet?), being able to make custom-made socks is an incredible gift. I certainly recommend this book to anyone looking to try making crocheted socks.

I found a number of problems with the text/instructions within a few pages of opening the book, including some erroneous information regarding gauge. I would hate to think that a beginning crocheter might chance upon this book and try to make sense of it.

Also, the sizes are not defined - whether they are S, M, L, etc. or child's, women's, or men's pattern sizes. Will return this book and look for patterns that have been tested and are clear in their instructions.

Lots of interesting pictures and patterns for socks, but no yarn weight were with the yarn used for the socks, so I will have to do some research to see if I can crochet a pair of socks with yarn I already have.
