Soldiers Delight Journal: Exploring a Globally Rare Ecosystem

Rate this book
In this journal, the author describes his year-long walking adventures at the Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, a rare prairie remnant just seven miles northwest of Baltimore, Maryland. In his quest to make this wild place his “natural home” throughout the course of four distinct seasons, Wennerstrom examines and contemplates rocks and minerals, plants, animals, prairies, floodplains, woodlands, lakes, ponds, pastures, mines and mills, Indian artifacts, as well as local legends and folklore.

I really enjoyed this journal. I found the idea of visiting and writing about a single place throughout an entire year, an intersting vehicle for sharing the park as well as the author's reflections on life and nature. As a birder and nature enthusiast, I loved Wennerstrom's attention to detail, and with only a few line drawings, still felt I had seen and experienced the wonders of this location. The botanical details might appeal to a limited audience, but I am one of those who found them to be a true delight. I found myself searching for online pictures to see with my own eyes, so to speak. The book was special to me on another level, because it was a gift from my uncle, who managed the park as a part of his career. I would love to visit Soldier's Delight Park now, in person!
