A swoony, small town firefighter romance from USA Today Bestselling Author J.H. Croix!

Taking complicated to new levels.

I’m moving back home. To the small town where I’ll have to face my cheating ex who married my ex-bestie.

When I run into Tate Hall, an old friend and the guy who also got cheated on in that mess, my pulse is off to the races with one look at the hotshot firefighter version of Tate. I’m convinced it’s a fluke. Until we end of roommates and keeping my distance is next to impossible.

I’m just trying to get my life back in order and don’t want to stir up gossip. Except Tate is all that and more. My heart and hormones don’t give a hoot about gossip.

Tate & Josie’s story is perfect for readers who love: hotshot firefighters, emphasis on hot, slow burn, he falls first, billionaire heroine, small town gossip, emotional romance with a dash of angst, plenty of steam and swoon, and a cinnamon roll hero with a protective streak who will do anything to take care of the woman he’s falling for.

*A full-length, standalone romance.

Flash Fire by JH Croix is a contemporary romance, a second chance romance, if you will. Josie has returned to Willow Creek after winning a Gold Medal in the Olympics as a skier. Sadly, she suffered a career-ending injury. She spent most of her savings trying to rehab herself into a comeback, but finally had to admit that that was never going to happen, and she returned to her childhood home. The first thing she did was stop for a coffee at the Firehouse Cafe where she ran into Janet, the owner, who offered her a part-time job. That would work until she figured out what she wanted to do. The next person she saw was Tate. She had a history with Tate: his high school girlfriend and her boyfriend had cheated, gotten pregnant, and married. Now apparently they were divorcing, three kids later. It all still hurt. Tate offered her a house on the property he was renovating. Wow! It that worked out it would mean she didn’t need to stay with her parents.

This was a calmer story than Croix, who specializes in facing contemporary issues, normally writes. These are two regular people, if one can call an Olympic Gold Medal winner and a hotshot firefighter, regular. Josie and Tate were both good characters, just living their lives. Their romance moved quickly. They were likable and kind to one another. Croix always writes good characters. Although the plot was not complicated there were a couple of complicated spots, but she worked through them. This was a lovely story.

I was invited to read Flash Fire by the author. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #JHCroix #FlashFire

Flash Fire by JH Croix is a small-town, friends-to-lovers, firefighter romance and is a part of the Into The Fire series. I love this group of firefighters and their Alaskan world! This one I especially loved because of the friends-to-lovers aspect. Tate and Josie knew each other as friends in high school (they dated each other's best friend until they found out they were cheating on them with each other). Now it's ten years later, and Josie moves back to town, where she sees Tate, and there's an instant attraction by both of them. The story was fantastic, and I would highly recommend it with way more than five stars!

There’s something bittersweet about reaching the final chapter of a long-loved series, and with Flash Fire, book sixteen in J.H. Croix’s Into the Fire series, that feeling burns bright. This author has a way of igniting small-town romance into something deeply addictive, and this last outing feels like both a celebration and a farewell wrapped in heat, heart, and healing.

From the very first page, this story pulls you back into that familiar world where every glance matters and every past wound still lingers just beneath the surface. Tate is everything a romance reader craves in a hero. A firefighter, a devoted single dad, the ultimate “good guy” with just the right amount of heat simmering underneath. He’s steady, grounded, and utterly swoon-worthy in a way that feels real rather than overdone.

Then there’s Josie, a retired Olympic gold medalist who returns home carrying more than just her achievements. She brings history, heartbreak, and a guarded heart that hasn’t quite learned how to trust again. What makes their story so compelling is that shared past. High school friends, both burned by betrayal, both shaped by it in ways they never fully escaped. Now, thrown back into each other’s orbit, the question isn’t just whether they still feel something… it’s whether they’re brave enough to risk everything again.

J.H. Croix handles this beautifully. The emotional layers unfold with care, never rushed, allowing the tension to build naturally between them. You feel the weight of what they’ve been through, the hesitation, the longing, and that slow, undeniable pull back toward each other. And when it ignites… it truly ignites.

The small-town setting once again plays its perfect role, wrapping around the story like a comforting embrace. It’s in the quiet moments, the community ties, and the sense that love here isn’t just about two people, but about belonging somewhere again.

What makes Flash Fire stand out is how it balances everything so effortlessly. The tenderness of a single dad, the strength of a woman learning to let her guard down, the chemistry that simmers into something undeniably powerful, and the lingering echoes of past pain that make their eventual connection all the more satisfying.

As a finale, it feels right. It honours every couple that came before while giving Tate and Josie a love story that feels earned, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying.

If you’ve followed this series, this is a goodbye that will leave you warm, a little emotional, and completely fulfilled. And if you haven’t… this might just be the spark that sends you back to the very beginning.

We enjoyed this small-town romance featuring Josie and Tate. Josie returns to her hometown after experiencing a devastating blow to her career path. The description of the town and its peeps made you want to live there, too. Hoping you enjoyed this fun and flirty read as we did.

Both characters have experienced heartbreak, but while one has moved on, the other still clings too tightly to the past and has major trust issues. Although it is understandable to hold on to that trauma, you can't let one bad outcome as a teenager define the rest of your life.

The characters were great, you have to love the rumor mill, and you also have the kind of friend who would give you the push you need to take the chance on the happiness you so deserve. Josie's character had a sense of humor, and we loved that. Tate was found to be a sweet, kind, and loving guy who puts his daughter first in all things, and we loved these things about this single dad.

This was a fun, cute read that was quite enjoyable. It had that small-town feeling we love, great characters. The romance and chemistry between this couple were beautiful. It felt right for both of them to move from just friends to something more as the attraction and connection were almost instantaneous from meeting once again.

Glad that Josie was willing to open her heart and take a chance on love again, and we're sure that Tate was up to the task of convincing her she made the right decision.

Joise holds an Olympic gold medal for downhill ski. Now she is almost broke and back to her hometown where she knows everybody. It also brings back her history. Back in high school, her boyfriend got her beauty queen best friend pregnant, got married, and moved on to have 3 kids. Right away she runs into Tate, who was the other half of the betrayal. He was the boyfriend of her best friend and the best friend of her boyfriend back then. The double betrayal has long been forgiven but not forgotten. They both don’t trust easily for any new relationship through the years since high school. Tate also becomes a single dad after his short time date relinquished her parental right to their daughter that he didn’t even know about. He is also wise enough to invest in real estate with any money he can save while working as a firefighter. Tate and Josie find new chemistry between them. Tate offers Josie one of his new rental unit. When her heater goes out, she ends up moving in with him and his bed. As if their relationship is not complicated enough, the whole town is watching them. The high school cheaters are now getting a divorce, and wanting to get back with Tate. His daughter’s mother accidentally runs into Tate at the airport with demands. Josie’s insecurity gets in the way. This story describes the impact from a betrayal years ago and the feelings of inadequacy. But love conquers all. Tate and Josie have the smarts and skills that carry them a long way.

We are back to Willow Brook Alaska for another visit with all our friends. It feels like coming home when I read one of these books. This is Josie and Tate's story, a friends to lovers story of sorts.

Josie is returning home after years away to become an Olympian skier. But sometimes life has other plans for us, a career ending injury forces you to change paths. The only thing Josie is worried about moving back home, is running into her ex and her ex best friend who cheated, to then marry.

Tate is managing the single dad gig the best he can thanks to the help of his parents and friends. Being a hot shot firefighter can make it difficult some times but knowing he has someone to step up if he is needed. Buying up and fixing properties as his side gig to make sure he is supported when fighting fires is no longer in his cards.

When Tate runs into Josie on her first day back, they have a instant connection. They had been close friends in high school, dating each others best friends they spent a lot of time together. And though they never had any feeling toward each other, sparks are flying now. Will they see where things take them? Will they stay in the friends zone?

Grab your copy and cuddle up for a cozy romance.

What a great way to spend an afternoon, getting lost in Willow Brook and catching up with friends and enjoying the treats of Firehouse Cafe 🤗

Josie heads home after her skiing career comes to an end due to an injury but while her heart is heavy she’s happy to home in Alaska 🥰

Tate and Josie share a history , they were friends in high school but their better halves at the time cheated at the time with each other but sadly the wheels has now turned and their marriage is on the rocks but that’s not my focus at the moment …

Tate also has a very sweet add on in his life now , Kara , his daughter and he’s such a good dad , your heart can’t help but melt and he’s got a village behind him which helps 🥰

Tate dabbles in real estate so Josie has a place to stay but the heating gives out so Tate suggests she stays with him and then things really start to heart up 🔥😉

I loved watching Tate and Josie work through their issues , a scary moment and find their HEA and together with Kara they make the perfect little family 🥰

It was really good to catch up with friends 🤗

This is a bit of a forced proximity, friends to lovers type story.
When Josie moves home to Willow Brook after her ski career ends in injury, she runs into her old friend Tate.
Tate is a local Hotshot Firefighter & he sure doesn't look like he did back in high school! Feelings that were NOT there when they were younger, roar to the surface for both of them!
She ends up renting a home from him & when the heat goes out, she has to stay with him, how convenient(wink wink). They also have a shared history of cheating ex's, who cheated with each other, then married & are now divorcing. Walking around town, making comments & trying to get under Tate & Josie's skin.
Josie's insecurities come flowing back. Can she get past it all before she ruins her chance with Tate?
Tate has a 5 yr old daughter to consider as well & Kara already likes Josie. He needs to figure out how to keep Josie with them forever.
This was a sexy, steamy, beautiful sort of second Chance & I am here for it! Enjoy!

Flash Fire by J.H. Croix is a scorching and heartfelt small-town firefighter romance that ignites with intense danger, protective instincts, and irresistible chemistry amid blazing stakes. The story follows a fierce heroine caught in a wildfire crisis who connects with a rugged, duty-driven firefighter hero, where close-call rescues spark flirty tension, emotional vulnerability, and steamy passion in the firehouse shadows. Croix's vivid prose captures the adrenaline rush alongside tender connection that kept me hooked.

I loved the hero's heroic calm cracking into possessive devotion, the heroine's bold resilience matching his fire, and their slow-simmering bond exploding into swoony, heated moments.

While firefighter tropes feel familiar, Croix's atmospheric heat and emotional payoff make it blaze. Overall, I’m giving Flash Fire four stars. It’s a thrilling, sexy read perfect for fans of protector romances with heart.

A sweet and entertaining friends-to-lovers romance that will warm your heart. Friends to lovers is at the top of my favourite tropes list and Ms. Croix hit all the boxes.
Tate and Josie are two friends who share the pain of cheating exes. To make matters worse, it was their best friends who cheated with one another. Not only did they each lose a best friend, but they also lost a love interest.
Tate is a single father and firefighter for the town and is investing in the town. Josie is a retired Olympic skier due to an injury. When she returns to Willow Brook, Alaska, she ends up having to stay with Tate and his sweet six-year-old daughter, Kara. Now you know what can happen when friends end up having to live together, lines get crossed and sparks ignite. The chemistry they share may have been under the surface since they supported one another back in high school.
Their story is relatable, easy to get lost in and a joy to read.

I love returning to Willow Brook, Alaska! Catching up with a lot of the couples is just so fun!

Flash Fire is about Josie returning home after an injury from being on the Olympic Skiing team and winning a Gold (!!) medal.

She runs into Tate, who has been a family friend for her whole life. They also have a shared history of their high school boyfriend/girlfriend cheating on them with each other. Unfortunately that high school drama has followed them into adulthood now that Josie is back in town.

However, Tate and Josie hit it off romantically this time around and their relationship ends up being so sweet!

This was such a great story and it was a quick read! Like I said, I love Willow Brook, Alaska and I was so happy to get a glimpse back into that world!

I absolutely love this new "Into the Fire" story. This author has a talent for drawing the reader into the story and captivating them until the end. I love Tate and Josie! Right after graduation, her boyfriend and best friend were discovered cheating, got pregnant and then married. Both Tate and Josie were caught up in the scandal that ensued. She went to pursue her Olympic dream and he became a firefighter. After her career ended, she has returned home. This is an emotional story and touching, heartwarming read that is a slow burn, drama, insecurities and women causing issues. The story is nicely developed and worth reading. I could not put the story down until the wonderful ending.

Another great visit to the Alaskan town of Willow Brook with its wonderful cast of characters, particularly firefighters! This is the friends to lovers story of Tate and Josie. It began ten years previously but now Josie has returned and, whereas they were just friends before, there is definitely something more between them now! However, their past encroaches on a possible future together.
This was a little shorter than previous books and I would have liked to have read more about Tate and Josie’s shared past and more about what each had been through. Despite that, “Flash Fire” is an uplifting and feel good read.

Thank you for the early copy and I have chosen to leave a review.

I loved Josie and Tate. Both had unfortunately been through the same circumstance of their exes cheating on them. And when Josie came back to town a few years later, she needed a place to stay. Her and Tate having been friends, he offered his place. But Josie saw Tate in a whole new light. The guy was hot. She didn’t remember him being so hot. Feelings started barging in. And these two caught feelings and an undeniable attraction towards one another. I loved how they slowly came together. Both of them were so sweet, and so deserving of a great relationship. And the two of them together were that perfect. I completely enjoyed this story.

This was a fast read; I enjoyed Josie and Tate’s story. Josie is returning home to her small town.

Feeling the highs of her successes and low of her injury. A town where she was humiliated by her cheating ex, and the source of small town gossip. Her trepidation of running into them is high, as they are now married. Her biggest surprise is running into Tate, and the sparks that fly!

I am loving this series; I always look forward to reading it. It is an easy escape read and in this book I related to Josie and Tate. I love visiting Willow Brook Alaska.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

If you like small town romances, you'll enjoy this friends to lovers story. Another great book in the Willow Brook fire fighter series. Tate is a single firefighter and single father. Josie is an Olympic skier who just returned home after a career ending injury. She and Tate had been friends and went through life changing situations when their exes cheated on them. They reconnect and have a fast paced romance. Sweet to watch them discover each other and fall in love. I read a free arc via Bad Boy Updates and voluntarily chose to review this story.

Josie has returned to Willow Brook after her sporting skiing career ended through injury. She runs into her childhood friend, Tate. They were both hurt years before by previous partners who had cheated on them. Tate lets Josie stay in one of his rental properties. However, when the heating fails Josie ends up staying with Tate and his daughter. When they were younger they were just good friends but now there is definite chemistry between them. But they have spitefulness to overcome as they try and navigate how to have a future together.

Another solid addition to this series! Josie, an Olympic skier, has returned home after an injury derailed her dream of returning to Olympic form. She is hesitant to return because she doesn't want to run into her ex and ex best friend who cheated and then got married. Tate is the ex of her former best friend. The situation is messy. Josie ends up being Tate's roommate. Things, of course, start to change as they both work through the past and plan for the future. I really enjoyed reading their journey to happiness.

Josie is moving back home and is leery of coming into contact with her cheating ex and her ex best friend whom he cheated with and then married. She comes into contact with Tate the other half of the picture that got cheated on and the sparks between them in combustive and when they end up roommates those sparks become explosive. This story had me cheering on this likely couple to finally getting their chance for happiness in this wonderful story.

Josie had achieved her goal but now after an injury she needs to find something else to do. Going home to Willow Brook was a little disappointing but she did love her hometown. Seeing her old friend Tate and getting this funny feeling in her belly was a little weird but kinda hot. I enjoyed the characters, their passion, their ability to not let the past hurt them and their pure joy of just being together.

I liked the connection and chemistry between these two, finding out about their history and seeing them both have evolving feelings. Because of their history there were worries, doubts, up and downs and personal issues and doubts to deal with. I liked the ease between them, the way they respected and supported each other, and the support and encouragement they had from those closest to them. I am voluntarily leaving this review after receiving an ARC.

Absolutely love this story!

This story was a fantastic addition to the Into the Fire series and I loved every word! It was a quick read that had me drawn in and engaged from the start. Both Tate and Josie are characters that could be your next door neighbors or someone you knew in high school. This book has just the right balance of sweetness, humor and passion to keep readers engaged from start to finish.

Reconnecting. A retired Olympic skier returns home to Alaska and runs into a childhood friend. A childhood friend with whom she shares a heartbreak based on a betrayal from just before she left town. The pair is instantly captivating. Instantly attracted. Instantly connected. The book is fun to read with a Hallmark quality to it and a bit of Lifetime movie type splashes thrown in. There is enough chemistry to light a wildfire of their own.

Josie is back in her hometown ready to start anew. She’s gotten over the betrayal of her HS best friend who thought getting together with Josie’s boyfriend all while stabbing Tate (her boyfriend) in the back. One of the first people Josie sees when she returns is Tate and boy have her feelings changed. Second chances at love for two who has trust thoroughly shaken. Add in a sweet little girl and things can only get better. Loving this small- town Alaska!

Josie has come to Willow Brook, she's an Olympic downhill skier, but after a life changing injury she's come home. In school her boyfriend and Tate's girlfriend cheated on them. Now she has fluttery feelings when she sees Tate and he's totally fallen for her. In school they often used to go out as a foursome, and they've known each other for years.

Tate and Josie's story is fast-paced to say the least, a real whirlwind romance! I could feel the sparks between them while reading, and loved that they got a second chance after everything they've been through.
It was so nice to meet all the characters from the previous books in this series again and catch up on their lives. Reading about Willow Brooks felt like coming home to me.

I have enjoyed other books in the Willow Brook, Alaska, series, but this one fell a bit short for me. I felt it was missing the depth of story that others have had. Josie and Tate have history, but they jumped right from catching up to scorching things up. I would have liked to have had more than the revisiting of the betrayal, the abandonment, and Olympic medal.
