I don't get it. This book is a chaos of ideas.

Maybe if I gain even more experience, I would understand it. But for now, I can't even grasp the simplest concepts.

Well written and clear in its delineations, this guide to understanding progressions unfortunately falls short of its goal. I suspect this is due to Llewellyn's editorial staff more than it is the real fault of the author, which I find very unfortunate. There seems to be huge sections missing from what otherwise would be a very useful "cookbook" for interpreting any type of chart; sections that would seem to duplicate previously presented information, but due to all things not being equal in astrology, emphasis would make the difference. For example, there is a section on Sun transits, but then in the sections covering other planets the Sun is strangely absent. And this continues throughout the whole text.

I've seen Llewellyn routinely edit out whole sections of books in this manner, and I believe they have a policy of not producing "cookbook" texts. For anyone not familiar with the term, a "cookbook" progressively works through each possible combination of astrology information so an amateur astrologer can easily piece horoscopes, etc. together without a real understanding of a chart. Besides the ethical issues surrounding copying information verbatim, which all astrologers must consider, there is a practical side to avoiding this method of textbook writing from a publishers viewpoint.

Extra pages of information in the hands of an inexperienced writer can be simply duplication, which automatically makes such a volume unnecessary for experienced astrologers. Extra pages become expensive to reproduce and lead to needlessly thick volumes that rarely get read. I think most astrologers who've collected a library of reference material know how frustrating it can be to look for specific information and only find the simplest interpretations repeated ad nauseum throughout various volumes.

But this is not the case with this book. Ms. Shaw's writing is direct and succinct and I would love to read an expanded version. While reading I was jotting down notes from the text just about every page. Ms. Shaw sets out with a very rational and engaging prose and comes very close to presenting a very complete overview.
