REVIEW

Review for 'Mousey Mornings' by Fiona Lowry. Illustrated by Oshadi Sandareka

What another absolutely fun, sweet and brilliantly illustrated children's book from the brilliantly talented Fiona Lowry!! It is a fantastic story which is perfect to read all year around! Not only does this brilliant book contain a fun story about two mice called Melvin and Zara but it also encourages children to open up their minds and imaginations as well as teaching children about being friendly, kind and helping each other!! We are huge animal lovers in this house and I actually run a small cat rescue from home called 'Golden Oldies Cat Rescue And Hospice' (you can find it on social media if you are interested) so any stories that are about or include animals are an absolutely huge bonus in this house and this absolutely brilliant children's book contained two very cute but very different mice!! I read this with my 7 year old twins Hunter and Ryder along with my 12 year old son Malaki. Where Hunter and Ryder are the perfect age for this book it is too young really for Malaki but nevertheless he had fun reading it too his brothers with me and we all absolutely loved the fact that it is rammed full with so many fantastic illustrations as well as the fact that it teaches children to be kind and to help one another. I am a big believer in children's books that contain important messages and morals for children whilst also doing so in a fun way. It is a good way to get children to realise the importance of being kind to another and realising what may happen if they are not while incorporating it into a fun colourful story that they will understand and Fiona does an absolutely brilliant job of this. I have also read two other books by Fiona called 'Franco And The Green Light Fairy' and 'Felix's Favourite Day' and I would highly recommend both those books as well as this for any young child as well as for all nurseries and schools to include on their shelves. In this book Melvin and Zara the mice live under the stairs but while Melvin does all the cooking and cleaning Zara does a lot of eating and sleeping but not much helping. One day Melvin decides he has had enough and heads off to bed to leave Zara to think about what she is doing. Grab this delightful book and find out how the friends get on and I promise you will not regret it!! With a fabulous and fun storyline filled with animals, rhymes, teamwork, friendship and delight what are you waiting for? We all absolutely loved looking at the beautiful, fun and colourful pictures. The retro style colours actually reminded me and my partner of books we read as children ourselves which we really liked! My children loved looking and naming all the different items in the background as well as cheering Melvin on while we all discussed why he was upset. It really does highlight the importance of teamwork, friendship and helping each other out. The story was made extra fun with all the rhyming words and my children loved guessing what word came next and laughing at some of the silly suggestions we came up with. One of the things I love about rhyming stories is that it helps children when it comes to rhyming words and with their English in general. This book makes a fantastic bed time story and it is also a good story that teaches children to look out for their friends We all had lots of fun naming all the different things that the children could see in the photos and naming all the colours. It is a fantastic book and I would say it is suitable for any child and adult from new-born up. This book is lovely and short and can be a quick read or be made into a fun long read whichever the reader wishes. The font is a nice style and size making it easy for adults and children to see and read too which is definitely a bonus as I have struggled with some fonts that authors have used in children's books in the past. It would be a great book for children to be read to by their teachers in school. I absolutely love any books that help children to learn lessons, use their imaginations or to help consider others and this one is a brilliant one as it has been done in a fun filled way so an absolutely HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Fiona for coming up with this idea and creating this brilliant children's story!! I won't say any more about this fantastic book but I would highly recommend it just as much as this wonderful story!! The imagery created by Fiona and the fantastic illustrations by Oshadi Sandareka in this amazing book really does pull the reader/s into the storyline where you all see everything come to life in front of their eyes all thanks to Fiona's absolutely fantastic evocative descriptions. It is written in a way that is easy for children and adults to read and myself, my 12 year old son Malaki and 7 year old twins Hunter and Ryder all took it in turns to read a page. It is a fantastic short read and I would say it is suitable for any child from the new-born to about 7 years. Amazon recommends from the ages of 3-5 but I definitely think younger is fine and slightly older, depending on the child. We read the paperback version of this book and I would definitely recommend getting a physical copy of this book for the kids as it is absolutely brilliant quality and the kids will love flipping through the pages and looking back and forth at the pictures!! It would be a perfect book for children to be read to by their teachers in school as well as friends and family members. Let your children's imaginations come alive and help your child discover the importance of friendship and teamwork with this fantastic book!! I really cannot wait to read more books by the very talented Fiona and/or illustrated by Oshadi to my children (and for myself) and hope that they are busy writing/illustrating the next one/s already!

Congratulations Fiona on writing another absolutely absolutely fantastic and fun children's book filled with brilliant illustrations by the amazing Oshadi Sandareka!! Here is to your next successes that we are all looking forward to seeing and reading 🥂! This is exactly why you are two of my favourite children's authors and illustrators!

Overall a fantastically illustrated and fun children's book with a great storyline that shows the importance of friendship and teamwork!

Mousey Mornings is a gentle, beautifully crafted picture book that captures the quiet magic of everyday routines through the eyes of a small, curious mouse. Fiona Lowry’s simple, rhythmic storytelling pairs perfectly with Oshadi Sandareka’s soft, expressive illustrations, creating a calm and comforting reading experience for young children.

The story celebrates the small moments that make up a morning waking up, noticing the world, and moving through familiar spaces with curiosity and care. Mousey’s actions are relatable and reassuring, helping young readers feel a sense of structure, safety, and delight in routine.

The illustrations play a key role in the book’s success, offering warmth, detail, and emotional clarity without overwhelming the page. Together, text and artwork encourage observation, conversation, and quiet engagement, making the book ideal for shared reading.

Mousey Mornings is especially well suited to early years settings, bedtime or morning routines, and children who thrive on calm, predictable storytelling. Its soothing tone supports emotional regulation while gently encouraging curiosity about the world.

A lovely, peaceful picture book that reminds readers that even the smallest mornings can be full of wonder.

What is it that makes mice such great characters for children's books?

I have no clue, but Mousey Mornings introduces us to two of the cutest mice friends, Melvin and Zara, who share a little cosy home under the stairs.

Melvin does all the work around the house while Zara sits back and it's not long before poor Melvin is exhausted.

It was great to see Melvin speak up about being upset and even better that Zara then realises that she's been taking advantage and wants to make it up to Melvin.

With strong messages about friendship, sharing chores to lighten the load and being a team, there's a lot to prompt further discussion alongside the read.

This sounds great to read aloud which is always something I look for with this age group and I really love the illustrations, which are beautifully done to give your little one lots to look at as they enjoy turning the pages.

This book will appeal to everyone and would make a great addition to any home bookshelf, but I can also see this being used for class and library reading too to compliment early topic learning.

Another fun read and gorgeous book from Fiona that will be treasured forever.

Mousey Mornings is a fun, cute story about friendship, with an important message about sharing, teamwork and helping others.

We follow Melvin and Zara, two best friend mice who share a cozy little home under the stairs.

But Melvin does everything around the house, makes Zara food, does all the chores, and Zara does nothing, so it's not long before Melvin gets tired and becomes exhausted.

So Melvin talks to Zara about her lack of help, and Zara realises her mistakes in not helping around the house, realises she's been taking advantage of him, and wants to make it up to him.

Want to know more? Be sure to pick your copy up to find out.

So all in all, a really nice read. I read this with our youngest Daughter and we both throughly enjoyed it.

We especially liked the calm, pastel colours used throughout and the beautiful illustrations are just so cute and homely.

The text uses is a good size and Is clear and easy to read.

A great addition to our Daughter's bookshelves.

A big 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from us.

This is a lovely picture book written by Fiona Lowry.
It's a cute little story about two mice who have been friends for many years. Melvin is a fantastic cook, but Zars has become complacent and takes Melvin's hard work and kindness for granted until one day, Melvin is struck with exhaustion. Sara soon realises that she's got to step up and help her friend not just now but every day. Dream work makes the team work as they say.

It is a fun story about friendship and the importance of helping each other.

Thank you, Fiona, for my gifted copy and having me along on your blog tour.

This book is suitable for young children and young readers and is available to buy now from Amazon, Waterstones & Barnes & Noble.

I wish you every success with your new book, Fiona 📖 ✨️

Melvin and Zara are two mice who share a home beneath the stairs.

They are best friends, but Zara takes advantage of Melvin and lives the best life doing nothing, apart from eating!

They have a beautiful home, but poor Melvin is exhausted from doing everything.

One night, he takes a stand and goes to bed leaving Zara to think about her behaviour.

This is a wonderful children’s story that helps them to understand about friendship, working together and helping each other.

Children will enjoy how the story is told through rhyme, it is fun and also brings some important messages with it.

The illustrations are beautiful and vibrant. Parents will enjoy reading this story to their little ones.

I read this book with my 5 year old son, Elliot. When I asked him what he liked about the book, he said:

“It was awesome! I liked seeing all the food, I love food and I don’t really like to share my food either… but sometimes I do. I liked that she was being kind, it’s nice to be kind”.

As a parent, reading this book with my son… I really liked how Fiona portrayed how people can become burnt out when they are always doing everything for someone and never get any help in return. It is such an important message that we should all put in the effort to help each other out and work together.

Another lovely picture book what a very important message behind the words by Elliot’s favourite author!

Mousey Mornings is such a wonderful little book. Melvin and Zara are two of the cutest little mice you will ever see. They're best friends you live together in a tidy little house under the stairs. Melvin does all the cooking and chores; anything Zara demands, Melvin grants. Unfortunately, Melvin has grown tired of doing everything on his own. When he downs tools and stomps off to bed, Zara finally changes her ways. This is an adorable story about friends and how enduring friendship is a two way street. The clever, rhyming text is accompanied by cute, colourful illustrations by Oshadie Sandareka. Mousey Mornings is a must read for every younger reader. Five huge stars.

I love books by Fiona Lowry, sharing them with my grandchildren, this one is no exception. It tells a charming, fun, rhyming tale alongside gorgeous illustrations of Melvin and Zara.

What I particularly enjoy is, with each book, there is a learning point, easily accessible to open discussions with younger children. This one carries a message about the importance of sharing tasks and the value of friendship, rather than just taking it for granted.

A delightful, easy read book, delivered exceptionally well.

My 6 year old and I loved reading Mousey Mornings. Melvin and Zara are two cute little mice and they show us how friendship is give and take.
Mousey Mornings is perfect for everyone, the pacing of the story makes it easy to read and my 6 year old really enjoyed reading this to me. The illustrations are so cute and really bring this story together with it's visuals.
The storyline itself was really good, I liked how Melvin handled the situation without causing an argument, I also found it quite amusing how I could relate to Melvin 😂
We love reading Fiona Lowry's books and look forward to reading more.
