"I am categorically not the kind of person who would spend six weeks living with a man I've only met once. A whole year ago. For approximately two minutes. During which he spent the entirety of our conversation drunkenly giving me The Eyes and calling me Ellen."
Dylan likes to know exactly where things are going. With her career, her family, her relationship, and, well, everything else. From spreadsheets to themed Pinterest boards, she's meticulously planned out every aspect of her life for as long as she can remember.
Max, meanwhile, always lives in the moment. The world's too full of beautiful places - and beautiful people - to let yourself be tied down. Besides, he's learnt the hard way that no future is ever guaranteed.
So when Dylan's broken up with she's left reeling, with no concrete plans for the first time in her life, aside from the accountancy job she's starting in a few months. Perhaps that's why she finds herself agreeing to a totally off-piste proposition - share a cabin for the summer with her friend's brother during his all-expenses-paid travel influencer trip to the pristine Welsh coast.
It's not like six weeks is long enough to throw your entire life off course or anything. Right?
Georgia Stone is a London-based author of contemporary romance. She writes love stories that she hopes make people laugh out loud and clutch at their hearts in equal measure.
She very much appreciates that being a fiction author is essentially just a socially acceptable way of having imaginary friends.
I have 458 highlights from this book so it’s like half the book or something? More than one highlight per page. Let this be my review for now. I need to gather my thoughts for a longer one but you know I will be screaming about this book everyday (as I already did even before it was out)
~~~
⚠️ Caution: this book can make you crave a trip to Wales. (as The Friendship Fling will make you want a summer London getaway) ⚠️
~~~
I don’t know what is it about Georgia’s writing but every little sentence just does it for me. Similarly to The Friendship Fling, I was smiling almost through the whole book. It was either the smallest smile or the very wide one (“slept with a hanger in your mouth” kind of smile). Almost throughout the whole read, because there are some deeper/darker/hitting you in the feels moments, too. The writing is exceptional. It’s fun in the best way and simply just so good. I love Georgia’s characters! You can sense each character’s personality instantly, not only the main ones but secondary ones. I adored Jude! Obviously I loved every mention of Ava and Finn. The story has the very well known tropes known in romance genre but at the same it’s completely different and stands out. You have a bit shy, people pleaser FMC that has her life planned out and a bit slutty, messy, living in the moment MMC. What else: best friend’s brother (but without unnecessary drama), trip to Wales, only one bed, roommates to lovers “for 6 weeks only” to obviously forever ;), oh and they are complete opposites. While they are opposites, they have some things in common, in a way. There is depth to both main characters and very nice characters’ development. The story is interesting, well written and simply top tier entertainment. And romance, of course! You will mostly smile but prepare tissues, cause there are some bits that can make you teary.
I am Georgia’s self proclaimed superfan so I may be biased but look at my number of highlights, and add the fact that I really really smiled and felt so much while reading, so it’s not only the bias, the book really is THAT good*
*books are THAT good cause come one, we can’t forget The Freindshio Fling
**While this book will totally work as a standalone, I highly recommend reading TFF too! Is it before or after reading TRR - up to you, doesn’t matter, but read both (and everything else Georgia ever writes!!!) cause these books are it!!!
Forever thankful to Hodder & Stoughton for blessing me with this ARC 🥹🥹🥹
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first 6 ⭐️ of this year because it was so good !!!
Tropes: • best friend's brother • trip to Wales • strangers to roommates to lovers to so much more • complete opposites
I read A LOT of romance, but there are some books that stay with you forever... and The Roommate Rule is definitely one of those books for me.
This was my first Georgia Stone book and I was a little scared at first because I didn't read the first book and I didn't know what I was getting myself into, but I was also sooo excited because it sounded so fucking good!!! And I have to say I have absolutely no regrets because The Roommate Rule has my whole heart.
The banter? Exceptional! The spice? Delicious! The soft moments? So fucking good that I was just smiling non-stop while reading on my kindle.
I don't think I ever smiled so much while reading a book. And through all that smiling of course I had to cry a little, because it's also sooo raw and full of emotion! (I can't say more because I don't want to spoil absolutely anything).
Dylan is someone who loves rules and is obsessed with structure, who wants in control in absolutely everything, but finds the person who makes her want to take a little risk. I loved seeing her grow! Max is perfection and I fell in love with his character every single page. His chaotic in the best possible way and just like Dylan he grows so much in this book. That epilogue made me cry because it was so beautiful! I also adored every single side character!!! And I immediately need more from them, but especially Jude and Toby! This is another book where I would have read another 100-200 pages because I just can't get enough of these characters. Georgia Stone just became an auto buy author for me and I can't wait to see what she writes next.
YOU NEED THIS BOOK. YOU NEED IT!!!! MAX AND DYALN ARE MY FAVOURITE 😭😭 EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK HIT ME IN MY FEELS . THE BEAUTOFUL COASTAL BACKGROUND WITH ALL THE SEA AND WAVE IMAGERY ! Their relationship how it goes and changes. The domestic moments. HOLD ME!!! THE EPILOGUE!!! MY HEART. full review coming!
First, I just want to say I don’t know if I'll be able to fully express how much I adored this book. I was already looking forward to this release after reading and falling in love with The Friendship Fling last year, and this was so worth the wait.
Now let me gush on this book and Georgia’s writing. Georgia Stone truly knows how to write romance, especially a realistic romance. Dylan and Max felt incredibly real, and I loved getting to know them more. Although they are incredibly different people, they lived so easily in tandem after communicating what it was each of them needed. Their relationship really shows that communication is key.
I really enjoyed how they both put one another out of their comfort zone, and it wasn’t just a story of Max forcing Dylan out of hers. They equally shared the exposure to new things and held each other’s hands through it. They both, in a way, brought one another to life or at least showed the other how to live the life they want.
Georgia’s writing is just so so well done. I caught myself multiple times having to stop after a sentence because it hit my heart and soul. Oh, and once again, thank you, Georgia Stone, for bringing back chapter titles!!
The Roommate Rule can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading The Friendship Fling before/as well. And I'm not going to mention the epilogue, which made me cry, but… yeah, just read The Friendship Fling first, I beg of you.
This is such a gorgeous, funny, thoughtful romance read that I'll be recommending to absolutely anyone who will listen to me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this ARC, and of course, thank you to Georgia Stone for writing this beautiful story!
Thank you to Hodder & Stoughton and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Since BookSloth was a tiny sloth, she has always wanted to write a romance novel. Sadly, she also suffers from chronic Blank Page Fright, so she became an editor instead. But if she had written a romance?
This is the book she wishes she had written.
The Roommate Rule is set in Wales (the reason she picked it up in the first place), and is infused with fresh air and outdoor energy. Frankly, BookSloth would now like to live in a cabin by the sea.
Maybe even with Hot Max! Definitely with Hot Max!
So... Dylan: rule-loving, structure-craving, probably owns colour-coded folders and creates impressive spreadsheets. A woman with a five-year plan. Possibly a ten-year one. She believes in control, in order, in doing things properly.
Hello, my twin!
Enter Max: chaos. Glorious, frustrating, emotionally complicated chaos. A chaos that isn't freedom, but armour. What initially looks like someone drifting through life slowly reveals itself as someone protecting his heart, and that of those he loves.
And here’s what BookSloth loved most: Max does not swoop in to save the day.
He doesn't steal those spreadsheets.
This isn’t that story.
As Dylan begins to change, Max is gently but undeniably challenged to do the same. Their relationship evolves because both of them do.
Yeah!
At some point, BookSloth’s inner editor had gone suspiciously quiet. No nitpicking. No overthinking. Just vibes and trust that this romance was going to land exactly where it needed to
This is a story about identity, people-pleasing, emotional unlearning, and what happens when you’ve spent your whole life trying to be “good” and suddenly realise you don’t actually know what you want. BookSloth has rarely felt so deeply seen by a protagonist.
Max’s arc is just as satisfying. Beneath his undeniably large ego, charm, humour, and knack for double entendres is vulnerability, restraint, and genuine emotional growth. His story is about learning how to show up honestly, how to risk connection, how to stop hiding behind the version of himself he presents to the world.
And the romance... The chemistry? Off the charts. The banter? Sharp and genuinely funny. The push and pull? Delicious. The spice? Hot. Tasteful. BookSloth may have needed a cold shower.
This book has heart. It has warmth. It has self-awareness. It has emotional depth beneath the romance beats. It's a book that understands that love stories are rarely just about falling in love.
And if BookSloth ever conquers Blank Page Fright, she hopes her debut looks a lot like this one. In the meantime, she's off to read Georgia Stone's debut: The Friendship Fling.
Thanks to hodder and stroughten via NetGalley for the arc.
The mmc is a cancer survivor !! ( as someone who rn thinks I may have it due to the symptoms I have THIS IS NOT Triggering you’d think it would be but for me it’s not ) . It’s actually interesting to read about especially when it’s one of the MCs who has had in it in the past and not a side character. - a book where a character has managed to beat cancer and is a survivor .
- the playlist consists of such amazing songs like - reckless driving -lizzy mcalpine !!! One of my faves .i loved it .
- a caffe Nero mention ( my fave coffee shop ) literally my fave coffee shop I go there often .
This is a road trip romance ( I love road trip romances - best friends brother ( hehe ) And set in Wales ( a place closer to me than London is) - yeah I live closer to Wales than I do London .
Only one bed trope hehe - IN ONE CABIN . I love that so much . This book really made that trope feel real .
I like max a lot hehe a fboy sure but a hot funny fuckboy - Dylan is an fmc I like hehe . She’s Ava ( from the first books friend ) this man literally is out here flirting with Dylan , making me swoon and I love him sm .
I love female friendships and this book is filled with it . I like Jude and Dylan’s friendship fr . I love Dylan sm . I hope we get to see more of their friendship especially if Jude gets a book because I love their friendship so much .
A quote I love “she tastes of saltwater and want and every bad decision I’ve ever mad , and all I can do is keep coming back for more “ - this is swoon worthy bring men like this back pls. THIS THIS THIS ( after their first kiss as well) this man js the kind of man I yearn for .
- idk if I’m meant to quote stuff or not but the earc didn’t say I couldn’t . SO I’ve decided to take the risk but that’s the only quote . I saw it and just had to share it because I love it so much .
Max had me swooning so hard this man is everything I want in a book bf . A green flag , downbad for the fmc . Literally interested in her the moment he sees her . I ADORE THIS MAN SM .
I lowkey think that Jude will get a book next idk for sure but I hope so she’s an interesting character and I’d love to be in her head .
the minute this hit my kindle I had to start it because I was GAGGED for max's book!! and OH IT YEAHHH DID IT HIT! there's something about Georgia Stone's writing that keeps you so engaged that you don't want to put the book down. not only are her books filled with banter, humour and romance but her characters feel incredibly realistic. you get their mess, their fears, their hopes and dreams and you see them work on themselves and become who they want to be, and for that, she's definitely an auto-buy author for me!
I loved max and Dylan so much. seeing them over the weeks slowly becoming more domesticated had me kicking my feet!! the mug brownies, walks, swims & little adventures they’d go on 🥹 they pushed each other outside of their comfort zones, they were vulnerable and honest, they communicated, they listened and they were afraid to confront each other which i appreciated. i personally loved the third act break up because it felt so realistic. the issue wasn’t solved by one person caving because it was the easy thing to do, they had to sort through their feelings separately and then some back to the relationship and work together for the future they wanted!!
i adored the cast of side characters! JUDE MY QUEEN, a girls girl FR! her newfound friendship with dylan stole my heart!! i also need jude & toby’s book IMMEDIATELY. yes PLEASE give me confident flirty girl x boy who’s shy and oblivious to what’s going on - i NEEDDD it.
finn & max’s bromance had me GIGGLING, they’re so goofy and i loved ava & max too, my favourite siblings ❤️🩹
seeing everyone together in the epilouge!! what if i sobbed. i love finn & ava so much 🤧🩷 dylan & max [redated] STOP ITTT - a noteworthy epilouge if i’ve ever read one!!
Firstly I want to thank Netgalley the chance to review this fabulous book.
The Roomate Rule follows Dylan and Max who we met before in the fantastic book -The Friendship Fling- you must read this too!
Dylan has just left a long relationship and needs to start doing more adventurous things she has always backed down from. She has been a constant support in her sisters life and we find out that Dylan is always doing what is best for others and not her.
Max is Ava’s - The Friendship Fling -twin brother. He is the complete opposite to Dylan and we learn why as we go through his story. Briefly Max has been seriously ill on and off through his life and lives for the now - something Dylan would never dream off.
Fate throws them together for 6 weeks sharing a lodge in Wales- one bed 2 almost strangers. We follow their lovely story and how both at first glance are complete opposites - but as weeks pass they grow closer and start to help and heal each other.
I won’t say anymore on the plot but can only this is such a beautiful and moving story- and I couldn’t put it down .
Georgia Stone has really made these two characters so incredibly real and you find yourself caught up in their stories and only hoping they can find the happiness they both deserve.
I loved Georgia’s previous Book with Ava and Finn - but now Max and Dylan are up there too. She really does draw you into these people’s lives in most compelling way .
I give the book all the stars and urge you to sit down and enjoy this lovely story. I also strongly recommend you read The Friendship Fling to fully embrace these lovely stories together ♥️
I just don't know where to start. I felt SO many emotions reading this book. I thought it was a cutesy best friend's brother romance set in Wales (a place I love dearly) but wow did I underestimate it!!! Dylan is the shy, introverted people pleaser who subconsciously takes responsiblity for everyone in her life, always putting herself last so that she can give everyone else what THEY need. She's a step away from leaving her cafe job and starting her accountancy grad scheme, but something's missing from her life, she just doesn't know what. Max is the larger than life content creator who lives for travel, adventure and adrenaline. He's a nomad, travelling the world to find the next best place to visit, the next white knuckle activity to try, always moving, always DOING so that he doesn't have to feel. When his sister Ava persuades Dylan to join Max for a retreat in Wales, she's reluctant. Six week with Max? The polar opposite to her? No way. Especially because she has a secret crush on him. Yet she makes the decision to go, to shake up her safe, slightly boring life. Of course there's only one cabin and of course there's only one bed, but this story is not that predictable. Max is still processing a traumatic illness. Dylan is determined to apologise for her every move. As they bond, they both learn more about each other, and from each other. I won't spoil it for anyone else, but the emotional journey they both go on left me in tears in the best way possible. Add this to your TBR. You won't regret it.
If I could give this book a 20 out of 20, I absolutely would. It’s without a doubt one of the books I was most excited about this year, and I’m incredibly grateful I had the chance to read it early. There is simply no way I could have waited until the end of May. From the very first pages, I was completely hooked, and I ended up devouring it faster than I ever expected.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and to the author, Georgia Stone, for this opportunity. What can I even say other than it was wonderful. The story pulled me in emotionally, the writing flowed effortlessly, and everything just worked. The chemistry between Max and Dylan was absolutely unmatched!! Intense, natural, and impossible to look away from. Every interaction between them felt real and meaningful.
I truly didn’t think I could love characters as much as Ava and Finn, and yet… here we are. They completely stole my heart. The way the relationships were written, the balance between emotion, tension, and tenderness, it was all done so beautifully.
Honestly, this book made me want to book my next trip to Wales immediately. It’s the kind of story that stays with you long after you turn the last page, and I genuinely believe it’s going to be one of the most talked-about and best-received releases of the year. A true standout.
Having seen a lot of the advertising for this book, I was so worried it would fall prey to the sophomore novel curse - instead Georgia Stone has written a second to add to my favourite books!
I really didn't think I was going to like Max and his laid back, casual attitude, especially when it came to how unbothered and almost callous he came off with regard to his relationships. His character development though? Absolutely divine. I loved how we were eased into new characters and new dynamics with Ava and Finn, and I loved that they provided a contrast to Max and Dylan without being constantly referenced. Max's slow, gradual unfurling of confidence and her relationships with the side characters were sublime. How such emotional depth, character development but all around fun was packed into this book is a testament to Georgia Stone.
It would have been so easy for this to be a fun, flirty novel about Max the casual sex fiend falls for Dylan, the uptight nerd. Instead we get absolutely gorgeous backstories, some unexpected emotional devastation, and some hilarity along the way.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC - it absolutely did not disappoint! I love Georgia Stone's writing, it always reminds me a little bit of Emily Henry in the way she focuses on character growth and emotional relationship development.
Both Dylan and Max had a huge amount of self-reflection and changing to do in order to really love themselves and each other. I equally loved them both a lot and was also super frustrated with them - Dylan for bending herself so much to make others happy that she often lost her own personality, and Max for being so hyper-focused on his past cancer battle that he ended up hurting people by not caring about the future. I loved seeing naturally bond and help each other figure things out. This felt like a good example of a love story where the characters change because they genuinely want to be better for themselves, not just changing for another person.
This would've been five stars for me, but I felt like their reconciliation was very fast and I would have loved to see more of their lives after they returned home from their summer trip.
I'm crying at that epilogue. This book was actually everything. It was so adorable, like these two are the cutest together and I was just swooning about all the little things that they did for each other. It was also heartachingly beautiful, the way they got each other and helped each other be not necessarily a better person (because they already are), but just move forward in life. At so many points, I was tearing up from little (big) things that hit home and I just wanted to give these two a big ol' hug. They deserve the world. The romance was obviously perfect. Who doesn't love a forced proximity romance where it's a lot of push and pull until they just cannot help themselves (not that Max was ever doubting anything lol). I think this book is the perfect combination of sweet romance and emotional moments that lead to a fuller life. I cannot underscore enough how much I loved it!
PS. Now I need to read The Friendship Fling, obviously.
This is what a contemporary romance should be! I instantly warmed to the characters, and I particularly saw myself a little in Dylan. I was hesitant at first as Max was essentially instantly attracted and flirtatious with Dylan and I’m more of a slow burn kinda girl however despite that fact there was definitely a build up to their romance story.
I loved how they challenged each other to become better people, shifting and changing and compromising (as everyone should in a healthy relationship) and genuinely bringing out the best in each other. There was some great mental health representation and definitely some neurodivergence representation too, which felt authentic and not overdone.
Overall I’d say this story challenges us not to settle for the life we think we should live and really fight for our own happiness which I personally love!
4.5 stars rounded up!
Thank you Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for the ARC!
The Roommate Rule is exactly the kind of contemporary romance I love — it’s warm, funny, and one of those books that just makes you feel cosy while you’re reading it.
Dylan and Max are complete opposites, thrown together for six weeks in Wales, and watching that slowly turn into something more was chef’s kiss. The banter is great, the flirting feels real, and the chemistry is there from the start without feeling over the top, building in a way that feels earned rather than rushed.
Georgia Stone writes such believable characters you can't help but become invested in. She did it with The Friendship Fling and she's done it again with this follow-on. And again the supporting cast are superb! 🩷
What really stood out for me was the character growth. Dylan’s journey away from people-pleasing and Max’s more vulnerable layers unfolding felt thoughtful and real.
Sweet, swoony, a little emotional. This was such a satisfying read. Also… I desperately need a Jude book...
Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for providing me with this arc!!
I really enjoyed this one. I’ve never read anything from Georgia Stone before and this definitely won’t be the last
I loved the banter and flirting in this one! It definitely made the characters feel more feel. It was nice to see the relationship unfold during their time on the trip and their friendships with other members on the trip
I would highly recommend to anyone who is wanting a fun, flirty romance book with dual pov and only one bed!! I mean, who doesn’t want that?!
I’ve just finished reading The Roommate Rule and my heart feels warm 🥰 Max as MMC? Set in beautiful Pembrokeshire, by the sea? Cameos by Ava & Finn? A delightful epilogue? It delivered everything I wanted and so so much more. Can’t wait for more of Georgia’s work ❤️
