When young Victor awakens in a rundown shack in the middle of the woods, he has no recollection of how he got there. His senses are attuned to such an acute pitch that he can see in the dark, hear heartbeats, and actually feel the synapses in his brain firing. In the attempt to understand what's happening, Victor begins to recall all the events that might have led him to this point in time, starting with the tragic car accident that claimed the life of his best friend and left him with a debilitating head injury. Along with this are reminiscences of his mother's abandonment, the death of his father-the only family he had-and the despair of living with his painful condition. After the death of his father, Victor feels that he has nothing left to lose, so he volunteers for a radical medical procedure that might heal him. The offer comes out of the blue from the mysterious Dr. Walker, chief scientist at R.C. Labs-an isolated research facility in the heart of the Tongass National Forest in Ketchikan, Alaska. What Victor encounters at the clinic is totally unexpected. Yvette Montgomery, the love of his life-a girl he thought he'd lost years ago-is also a patient at R.C. Labs. They reconnect, and-for once-it seems, as if life's finally going Victor's way. But he should know better... Victor stops remembering the moment he realizes he's not alone in the shack. Sarah Grey, a beautiful medical inter-who has saved Victor from a wrongful death at the hands of Dr. Walker-soon awakens too. Victor demands an explanation, but there's no time. Before he knows it, he and Sarah are on the run! Paramilitary forces, under the aegis of R.C. Labs, have orders to kill Sarah and capture Victor for dissection. In the middle of this frantic chase, Victor experiences a paranormal phenomenon that ends in an involuntary display of telekinesis. This both frightens and excites Victor, who tries to gain control of this supernatural power. But his hypersenses turn on and off randomly, and not always to his benefit. Sarah soon reveals the truth about R.C. Labs and the terrifying side-effect of Victor's procedure. A mysterious energy, recently found in the atmosphere, is now-being absorb by Victor's brain, fueling his new abilities. Unfortunately, the continued absorption of this energy will soon begin to corrupt Victor's volition, inciting an unnatural, malevolent behavior that will ultimately warp him into an inhumane being. One, too dangerous to be kept alive. Fearing Yvette would suffer a similar fate, Victor embark on a suicide mission to rescue her from the belly of R.C. Labs. In the process, he meets Damian, his experimental counterpart-who's also trying to save his captured wife. Together, they stand against RC Labs' SWAT forces. But as Victor is forced to use his new powers to protect Yvette and Sarah, Damian's wife gets killed in the middle of a havoc. Damian blames Victor and let his rage take control of his volition. Damian's powers increase tenfold after his complete turnabout to evil, and he swears vengeance against Victor, Sarah, and Yvette. Now, in order to protect the ones he loves, Victor will need to gain a power he can only achieve by turning to evil himself...

*** I voluntarily reviewed this book, I gained no monetary incentives nor was I specifically requested to review the book, these are my honest ramblings and I hope you enjoy reading them - kat***

I was contacted by the author when he saw my penchant for sci-fi and paranormal romance. I read the blurb and knew that I was interested in reviewing it. I often find male authors tend to write the romance side as an afterthought. But I found myself impressed with the author's style and the romance was just right. The plot and characters are well written and although it is a trilogy. The cliffhanger doesn't leave you frustrated.

In every book of human contest there seems to be a measure of the conflict between good and evil, between right and wrong. This book contains a very healthy measure of the conflict, enhanced by the notion that our brain's abilities can be increased, that telekinesis is within our grasp, give the right set of circumstances and treatment. Some of the story reflects in the necessities to deal with PBI, permanent brain injury, and the potential means of doing so. That brings up a lot of discussion of technical information about the brain, which, if true, is amazing by itself. I will leave you to discover the machinations of various doctors, and perhaps the DOD, and deal with those issues raised by the book. What you will find amazing in the story is the personal conflict of Victor Bellator over whether he will adopt the role of a "good" man or a "bad" man. Since there is a sequel in the works you will know his struggle continues after the story here is ended. For that I am thankful. I have yet to be sated with my desire to know the "rest of the story." A really good read.
