A mouse couple, in search of the mightiest husband for their daughter, approach the sun, the clouds, the wind, and a butte, before the unexpected victor finally appears.
This is an authentic Hopi folktale. I liked its original illustrations in the Hopi-kachina style! It teaches perseverance, love of family, and knowing "the grass is greener"-- to stick with your own situation.
According to the author's note, this is a tale for children, but it's more appropriate for adults. Few children would sit still long enough to read this book to the end, and, if read aloud, they'd be squirming before the story was half way finished. The tale itself is filled with tradition and the art adds another layer of symbolism. Adults with an interest in Native Americans will most appreciate this story.
