The Dark Path introduces John Morrigan in this unmissable new crime thriller. It's the perfect listen for fans of authors like Damien Boyd, D.S. Butler and Peter Robinson.
There is no turning back....
Detective John Morrigan arrives at what appears to be a routine homicide in a botched armed robbery. However, as a key witness to the murder is herself violently killed less than 24 hours later, Morrigan discovers that someone very dangerous is responsible.
As the Detective follows the trail, it leads him into a tangled web of duplicity stretching from the heart of his police department all the way to the upper echelons of political power.
But as Morrigan is about to spring a trap to catch the killer, his own dark past emerges, and he is faced with the dilemma of dropping the case or face a prison sentence. Are the stakes too high for Morrigan?
A bungled armed robbery leaves one man dead in the street. The only witness is an elderly woman. A day after Detective John Morrigan interviews her, she is shot and killed in her home. There were no witnesses this time.
Morrigan has a secret past that no one knows about ... except the killer. He has two choices .... he can confess and spend some time in prison .. OR .. he can work for the killer ... drop the investigation and make certain evidence disappear or someone close to him will pay the penalty.
This is first in a new series and features Detective John Morrigan and his team. The story line is complex, yet easy to follow. Not all the characters are likable ... they all seem to have issues of one kind or another. Morrigan is an angry man, with secrets that he doesn't want to share with anyone. He is not a team player, and he colors way outside the lines.
There's lots of action ... violent gun battles, blackmail, murders, professional killers, and the involvement of a very well known, corrupt politician.
My one complaint ... there is a HUGE cliff hanger. I find it very frustrating that no warning was given. I'm not real happy that I invested the time to read and get involved only to find that the book was incomplete. One star dropped in my rating.
Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Detective John Morrigan from the New York City police force is not a detective to be messed with, however when he starts to investigate an armed robbery gone wrong followed by the murder of his key witness, he begins to suspect that there is more to this. Then his wayward brother is given early parole and wants to meet up with him but at what cost to the siblings? I enjoyed reading the book as it was well paced and had good tension throughout BUT the ending is most certainly not what you will be expecting and given that I would mark the book at 3.75* Thanks to Bloodhound books for the ARC to review.
The Dark Path is the introductory book following Detective John Morrigan; a NYC Detective of Irish descent who finds himself in the middle of a routine homicide investigation that spirals into a series of murders all closely connected to the first. While following the trail of clues he soon discovers that the dark secrets of his past are being used to blackmail him.
I had high hopes for this book as I do lover a gritty crime thriller but unfortunately the story was slow to start and dragged on through the middle. I was unable to make any kind of connection with the main character…he just didn’t seem believable. The book did eventually start to pick up momentum but the ending was abrupt.
It starts with an interesting premise. John Morrigan is working a case, only the key witness is now dead. I suspect this happens in real life on occasion too. However, now things get complicated. The killer is someone who has to know John because what should have become a cold case without leads is now quite a mess. There are blackmail issues, career-ending choices, mega corruption and a bit more. What is John's secrete and would prison be better than trying to bring the killer, and potentially himself to light?
The writing is easy to read and includes a huge amount of action. The police procedures appear sound or plausible for the most part. While this is my first book by this author, I have to decide if I will read others. The ending upset me, as it is a cliff hanger. I rather despise those. They leave me feeling high and dry and not satisfied, which is what happened with this book. The loose ends are not tied up, my questions aren't answered and I really don't care for that at all.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for my copy of this book. This review contains my options and thoughts about this book, left freely.
When you find yourself walking a dark path, with no obvious way back.
This was a very “new” read for me: it was like reading a cop show; and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way.
As you read through the book you feel like you are watching an American cop TV show: a good one!
With good characters, and plenty going on to keep you reading, and wondering where its going to take you, it leaves you wanting more.
Just when Lt John Morrigan thinks its all coming together on his case the tables turn on him. With the body count rising, things begin to get more and more complicated; and who is in whose pocket?
Then when things begin to get really personal; how will he deal with it and at what cost?
Because no one likes a dirty cop.
As the book reaches its conclusion, with your heart pounding, all of a sudden, you get that feeling of: “Nooooooooo, now I have to wait for the next season to start” on your favourite TV series.
A Dark Gripping Thriller: that leaves you wanting more.
Kevin has created a great character in Detective John Morrigan; you may love him, you may hate him, but you have to know what he is going to do next. Because of the dark side to his nature, he is impossible to predict, which keeps you guessing and turning those pages.
A tightly written plot gives Morrigan a winding road to travel on. I reached the end sated but, also dying to know what Morrigan will do next, especially towards the really bad guys he is up against. Highly recommended.
This book definitely keeps you guessing all the way! Detective John Morrigan finds himself in the middle of the most tangle situation he could ever be in. He has his own secrets and demons and needs to solve a crime he feels he can't unless he crosses the line he should never be crossing! The question is will he or won't he? Is there a way back once you cross the line? I likes this book and am hoping there are more to come from Kevin. Well worth a read. Thanks to Bloodhound books for the ARC I received in exchange for my review.
This is a new author for me, I enjoyed his book from beginning to end. It is a well develped story that has twists and turns that had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what will happen next. The characters made the story feel real and made it engaging. I enjoyed the suspense of a good mystery. It had me guessing to the end on who did it. I highly recommend this suspense-mystery book, I read it one sitting and didnt regret picking it up.
A bungled burglary or something more sinister going on when a witness is killed shortly after which brings Detective John morrigan down a dark twisted path, this a new author to me and I enjoyed this thriller ,I highly recommend to everyone 👍😀📖
This is a good start to a new series. Lieutenant John Morrigan works in the NYPD and is good at his job. He loves his brother but unfortunately he is a criminal and about to be released from prison. What is his brother up to and why is he wanting to stay with Morrigan? This is a page turner and I was engrossed in the storyline. This book certainly kept me guessing throughout.
Another new writer to me, another ARC from Bloodhound Books. This is a very enjoyable novel, well written and with vivid portrayal of character and place. Detective John Morrigan is a troubled New York cop with a dark secret and a penchant for violence and he and his partner work well together. The story is intriguing but I was disappointed that I will have to wait for the next in the series to discover more.
Very different to the previous books I’ve read by this author, I found the character of Morrigan both likeable & intriguing with his no-nonsense attitude & complex relationships. The plot plays out well & ends unexpectedly, yet it managed to hold my attention throughout. I’ve rated it four stars as there are sections of conversation that don’t ring true as American English & it did distract me slightly. Otherwise an interesting well-paced read.
In the style of Michael Connolly and His Harry Bosch character McManus takes the reader on a journey through the mean streets of New York in the hunt for what appears to be a routine hold up but nothing is what it seems.
Anyone who enjoys detective stories will get a kick out of this! Well worth a read, couldn’t put the book down.
I loved this book. So well written, capturing all the nuance of a fast moving police department in the USA. The characters and plot all very believable. It has a slightly curious ending - but I won't spoil it for you - you'll have to read it yourself!
This is the first book I have read by Kevin McManus. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be reading more from this very talented author. Realistic characters and an exciting, gripping plot.
