The most dangerous people are those with nothing to lose. Who don't care if they live or die.
Simon Peake does care… he just isn’t sure about what right now. The ex-soldier’s life is as close to rock bottom as it gets.
He needs a job and he needs a quiet life.
What he gets is a whole load of mess working for New York-based Irish mobster Harry Lafferty. A job that requires him to use his special skills on some very unsavory people. His relationship with Harry’s niece isn’t exactly conducive to a quiet existence either…
As Peake tries to walk the fine line between surviving in this new life, and atoning for his old one, he struggles on both counts. And when his past comes back to bite him, and those closest to him are threatened, the reckoning will be merciless for anyone who stands in his way.

My Thoughts: Simon Peake is a man haunted by his past; there is nothing good in it at all, as far as he can tell and once again, he is broke, living on his wits, trying to keep out of trouble. He is waiting for someone at O’Hare’s bar – an Irish bar, possibly the last truly Irish bar in Manhattan, owned by the Irish, who may have some work for him. The person he is waiting for, Sean appears to be a no show but when a well-dressed woman comes up to him, obviously a regular, they have an enlightened conversation about life and dying. They leave the bar together. And so begins another fast-paced Crime thriller from Rob Sinclair through the streets of Manhattan as Peake finds he has become embroiled with the local Mafia, the powerful Rafferty family, a pawn in the conflict that is threatening to tear the family apart and a man falling in love with Katie; a woman torn by her tragedy of a past. Dead Reckoning peals back the ruthless layers of a family that have become a law unto themselves, that think nothing of killing, intimidation and treachery to get that they want, power and money. Their reach is long, their influence wide, their enforcing brutal. But Peake has his own death wish, cares little about his life or safety but does care for Katie and his neighbour Jelena; a woman who entertains men, many of whom treat her badly. Then there is Chan, his and Jelena’s landlord who also is not a man to mess with, also a man Peake dislikes for a variety of reasons, none of which he can put a finger on, he simply does not trust nor like the man and his bully boy. When the Middle Eastern element gets involved in the nefarious undertakings of the Rafferty family, Peakes previous life comes rampaging back, his skill and knowledge gained in his clandestine Military career, followed by a stint in goal, become necessary to try and save Katie and Jelena from certain death. Can he pull off an act of retribution or will it be the final hurrah for Simon Peake? Loner, ex army, fearless to the point he appears to invite danger, even death. We’ve read a few of these runaway series that have a hook that keeps us returning for more. The vigilante out to clean up the bad guys; frustrate evil enterprise and make the world a safer place.
Simon Peake seems to fit that publisher’s profile of the next great thing in thriller novels. A rival to a Reacher, a balance for a Bond or Bourne, an action hero and killing machine.
But Rob Sinclair’s latest protagonist, primed with potential is also a flawed individual. A slowly revealed troubled past, a criminal record and some deep mental trauma.
Rather than a guy to get behind he seems forlorn; down on his luck, a long way from being able to influence and challenge injustice. Indeed he seems on the wrong side of the law, joining the criminal underworld of extortion and enforcement.
The story splits into two parallel narratives one being his troubled past, a failed tour with the British Army and the unfolding present, his broken life, directionless, an ex-con desperate for a job to pay his rent. When he tries to get a job with an Irish family of gangsters you question how far he has fallen and assume he is in deep undercover mode with a manufactured past to con the criminals with a sting like operation. You have to trust the writer, believe the storytelling and accept the changing perspective on the events in the life of this character.
Things seem to take forever to provide scope for the hero to emerge; you start to doubt the rules of fiction writing expecting if Peake can’t save others or himself then for the modern day cavalry, SAS or FBI has to intervene.
I loved the writing. The slow build up of character. The hard work to find traits to warm to with Peake other than his openness and desire to protect his neighbour. You try to see redeeming qualities or excuses for his situation. To understand his past, what caused his PTSD and share in a more positive future. It is a compelling read as you try to match Peake to the pattern of righteous hero in this type of story. I really enjoyed the journey the author takes you on before we find person we can get behind.
Plenty of action and drama; some deep psychological issues touched in conversations about life and death and strong characters. What I liked best for all the thrills and excitement was the sense of not knowing how the story ends or why Peake is in this predicament. This motivation to read on and turn pages and then suddenly to find close to the end of the book, you do care about this person, for all his mistakes and failures. That real heroes can’t save everybody and sometimes in the process they can lose themselves.

I have read a few of this author's books, so I'm glad to see that I have managed to read the first book in a new series. I so often miss them.
If you are a fan of action-packed, fast-paced thrillers, then this is an author and a book you may want to put on your list. Simon Peake is essentially a loner; he needs money and so ends up working with an Irish American mob boss, Harry Lafferty.
Simon is an ex-soldier; there are details about one of his missions that are told in a back-and-forth style. It fills in some of the details that explain his character, but I feel this is scratching the surface. Peake is hired as a driver for the Laffertys, which gives him the chance to earn some money, but not all the family are in favour of him. They don't trust him and his calm demeanour.
The jobs he is out on takes him to some interesting places, and there are airport runs and other meetings for him to attend as and when he is called, regardless of his social life. He walks a fine line, and this line is getting blurred, and there is something from his past that is fighting to make itself known.
This author does not shy away from descriptions when it comes to torture, beatings and the seedier side of life. This is set in New York, and it has the feel of the city I know from TV, media and the like. The rough apartments, the dodgy coppers and obviously, the gangs or mobs. Peake's past and present are laid out, and this back-and-forth works really well. It soon becomes more dangerous than even Peake could ever have been aware of. The author doesn't hold back! It has left me definitely wanting to know more and follow him into other escapades.
This is a fabulous intro to a new series with a character who has a dodgy moral compass, but sort of for the right reasons! It is a thriller that delves into the life of a soldier, one who has been kicked out and is merely looking to exist. Excellent book and one I would definitely recommend.
I just watched Mobland so seem to be on a bit of mob story kick lately. The ending of this was also spoiled by the fact that I knew this was a new series, so Simon Peake has to live for the next one. I am looking forward to reading the next one though.
Peake is ex special forces. Not just regular special forces, but off the book / black ops stuff. His last mission saw him discharged, not for the mission but for what came after. Not just PTSD, when you have to make the choice between being a soldier who kills and being a real killer, you cross a line that is hard to come back from. Peake made that choice to try and save people but it changed him forever - and not in a good way.
Five plus years later, fresh out of prison, he is in New York and working for the Irish mob after taking care of one of their family inside. He works to keep the animal inside him leashed despite the violent job and his past coming back to haunt him while attempting to have a normal life as he dates and gets back on his feet.
This one is graphically violent if you are not into that. It is also a dual timeline, skipping back to his last very off the books mission in the Middle East, the one that saw him change as a person and the end of his special forces career. Peake is flawed and changed forever from those days. He tries to be a better person, and he acts violently for (in his mind) good reason. But it is still violence.
A gritty thriller with a high body count. I enjoyed this read but definitely not for everyone. A few unanswered questions like how did those from his past find him when everyone used code names and no one should be alive to talk. Plus a few people who didn't get the justice they deserved, but maybe that is for the next book.
Thanks to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the advance copy for review. This one is available tomorrow with the next one, Deadly Mistake, scheduled for publication in late September.
I am quite the fan of this author having been with him from the start. So, I was excited to get my hands on this, another series opener, this time featuring good boy gone kinda bad, ex-soldier Simon Peake. It's actually, for the majority of the book, two separate stories. One taking part in the present with Simon working for a New York based Irish mobster to make his rent which, as his landlord "tells" him is very overdue. He is not long out from jail so his options aren't vast. But, despite being the whipping boy, there is one major positive, in the shape of his boss, Harry Lafferty's, niece... Meanwhile, we also go back in time, to when Peake was still a soldier. His job there is secret and dangerous and deniable. But I'll leave you to discover that for yourself. So, the two completely separate threads continue on, and I long gave up trying to work out any connection and just read them as two completely discreet storylines. Obviously, from the synopsis, you can tell that they do eventually merge, his past coming back to bite him, but, again, leaving that for you to find out how... Well, as per usual, this book was action packed all the way through. This time though, the main character was a bit of an underdog, the lowest in the food chain, the aforementioned whipping boy, and I did initially struggle to work out why, with all his special skills, Peake would choose to try his luck with Harry and his family. Also, as a bit of a side-story, we see his kinder side with his interactions with neighbour Jelena. Peake was a bit of a strange beast for the reasons already mentioned but he definitely has depth and I do feel that we haven't yet scratched the surface of his full past yet. He definitely has much more to give and I will definitely be there to find out what... My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
~ Dark, gritty, action-packed thrill ride from beginning to end ~ Couldn’t put it down ~
What I liked: * Simon Peake: warrior, ex-military for British, checkered past, dark-gray anti-hero, protective, a bit of a cipher as little is learned about his past and who he really is, his willingness to do “the job” and his impressive array of skills, that he actually seems to care…maybe? * The women in this story that Simon got to know and care about: his neighbor - Jelena and Katie - a potential love interest * The dual timeline moving between Simon’s time on black ops assignment Operation Zeus eight years before he lands a job with the Lafferty family * That I was grabbed on page and had to find out what happened * Beginning to care about Simon and a few of the others even though there weren’t any really “good” people in the story * That though graphic in portraying what happens in painful scenes…it is not so detailed and explicit that I had to close the book or skip pages * That this is not a “Reacher wannabe” but of a similar genre – I think Simon might have more personality as we get to know him…maybe? * That I was left wanting to find out what will happen next
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about how war and being in some military positions must impact a person mentally, physically, and emotionally while enlisted and then after they return to civilian life * Thinking about how evil some people, and governments, are and what they are willing to do to promote their agendas
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Dead Reckoning by Rob Sinclair is the story of a man who makes the word resilient seem inconsequential. The story is told in two timelines: somewhere in the Middle East during a time of revolution, and back in the United States, newly released from prison and looking to earn money. The things he is capable of, both horrendous and sweet, are mind-boggling. He got sent to prison for being a little too serious when stopping the rape of a fifteen-year-old and doing serious damage. He has fallen in with some mobsters as their driver, something he is good at, until he crosses paths with his past. It is a fast-paced thriller, full of violence with a healthy disregard for the rules.
Peake lives in a slum. There are only two apartments on his floor rented out: his and a prostitute named, Jelena, who it appeared people paid to beat her up more than have sex with her. Their landlord was a man named Chan with muscle named Christine (from Stephen King’s thriller) but God-forbid you use his whole name. Peake worked for the Irish mob, a man named Harry Lafferty, who had sons and nephews on his payroll. They ranged from not too bright to downright stupid, all violent. Peake is a good character who has a soft spot for women he liked and not much of anyone else. He’s a superman who can get himself out of nearly any fix and his could be termed a sadist, if not for the fact that he was on the side of right, sort of. Fast-paced, decent characters, and a vivid past.
I was invited to read Dead Reckoning by Boldwood Books. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #BoldwoodBooks #RobSinclair #DeadReckoning
Dead Reckoning follows Simon Peak, ex-soldier, down and out.. Peak needs a job and fast.
Peak has been in prison but it’s time to turn his life around.. well as much as possible. His opportunities are limited so he ends up at the doorstep of Harry Lafferty and his crew.
The pressure is ramped up when Peaks landlord demands 3 months rent so when the crew need a driver Peak doesn’t say no.
Little does he know his fate is now sealed.
Peak gets slowly sucked into their world and almost immediately makes a decision that will come back to bite him.
It’s not all doom and gloom though.. Peak finds a connection with Harry’s niece..but can he balance work and the growing connection between them?
Added to that Peak has history.. and an anger inside that he must use every ounce of strength to keep buried.
The thing about history is it won’t stay buried forever.
Things soon start going wrong and people end up getting hurt.. but why? Can Peak put the pieces together?
What I really loved was the timeline as the author explores both past and present, allowing the reader to learn about who Peak really is.. what broke him. It’s dark, gripping and packed full of high octane wow moments.
I love the little details added to, to give real depth to the main characters, emotions.. a realness.
The authors real talent for writing shines through and if you are a fan like me you’ll love it. Rob Sinclair manages to keep offering new and fresh characters that you get invested in but with the same gripping edge and style of story we love. There’s twists and turns along the way that really pack a punch too.
Dead Reckoning is a pure adrenaline rush, from start to finish! I appreciate characters who aren’t perfect and are pleasantly flawed–and Simon fits that to perfection. He tries to do the right thing but it seems the more he attempts it, the less “right” his decisions can be, often influenced or forced by the people around him.
Being an ex-con doesn’t make it easy for Simon to find work that is above board, leading him to the Lafferty clan. He is aware that the type of work he’ll do isn’t anything he can divulge to others, but Simon never imagined that working with the Laffertys' would later lead him down a path that would reconnect him to his turbulent ex-soldier past. It was a nice twist amidst a brawling plotline, and I loved getting to see the present time and the flashbacks provided, when the reader is given background information into Simon’s past.
Simon tries to keep himself apart from others, not wanting to form any connections. But he can’t help but show his human side, as witnessed by the way he treats Harry’s niece, Katie, and Simon’s neighbor, Jelena. I really liked the relationship with Jelena; it’s not conventional and not romantic. Its basis has formed on the need to gain an alliance with someone, even in the most unlikely of places.
This is my first experience with reading anything by Rob Sinclair, and it won’t be my last. The succinct writing style and to-the-point hard hitting dialogue made me feel like I was watching some sort of crime drama thriller on TV, an experience that would appeal to anyone who appreciates an exciting wild ride through chaos of the best kind. Dead Reckoning is a definite five-star read!
If you’re hooked on Reacher, you are going to devour Rob Sinclair’s latest novel, Dead Reckoning.
Simon Peake is a former soldier who has fallen on hard times. Having hit rock bottom, Peake just wants to find a job and lead a quiet life. However, trouble always seems to find him – and this time around it is in the shape of New York-based Irish mobster, Harry Lafferty. Hired to use his special skills on some unsavoury people, Peake hurtles into yet another tangled web when he begins to get up close and personal with his boss’s niece…
In a dangerous world where you cannot trust anybody, Peake needs to stay alert and keep his eyes and ears open because when the past comes back to bite him, those closest to him are put in danger leaving him with no other choice but to be as ruthless as possible to save the ones he cares about most.
Will Peake succeed? Or will old sins end up leaving him with nothing? One thing’s certain – a quiet life is the one thing Simon Peake will never have regardless of how much he tries…
Fast-paced, action-packed and relentless, Dead Reckoning is the first title in Rob Sinclair’s new series that introduces Simon Peake, a fearless maverick of a hero who will take readers on exciting and unpredictable journeys that will keep them on the edge of their seats.
Guaranteed to keep readers breathless, Dead Reckoning by Rob Sinclair is a must-read for fans of David Baldacci and Michael Connelly.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5 stars for me. In short - Dark, Gritty, and Full-Throttle, But Not for the Faint of Heart
I read this book as a free review copy and this is my honest feedback based on my reading the book. I have read other books from the author and have liked his style of action. My thanks to the publisher, the author and NetGalley for the review copy.
Like other thrillers by Rob, this is a seriously intense ride. This is the start of a new series which introduces Simon Peake, a former soldier with a messy past and plenty of baggage who is now managing his life as a hired muscle for a mobster who finds himself being dragged deeper into a violent world that echoes the horrors of his old military days. The story jumps between past and present, and this is a type of structure that really worked for me and it gave the character depth and made the tension feel constant.
What I liked: The action like other Rob' books is fast and brutal and Simon’s personal history and struggle makes him more than just another tough guy with a gun. This raw, emotional edge keeps the story grounded amidst all the chaos.
What didn’t quite work: It’s very grim. The violence is unflinching, sometimes way over the top (okay for me) and at times I found it hard to connect with Simon, who’s compelling but not exactly likable. Some side characters felt thin, too and this lets most of the steam out.
But, if you like your thrillers gritty and morally gray like me, this one's worth checking out.
Dead Reckoning by Rob Sinclair is a gritty, fast-paced thriller that doesn’t let up for a second. Simon Peake, a former special forces operative fresh out of prison, is a far cry from your typical untouchable hero. He’s bruised, broken, and barely hanging on—yet still magnetic to watch as he gets pulled into the orbit of Irish mob boss Harry Lafferty. When Peake starts falling for Lafferty’s niece, his world gets even more dangerous, forcing him to confront both old enemies and his own demons.
Told in a dual timeline, the novel moves between Peake’s covert missions in the Middle East and his dangerous present in New York City. Sinclair does a brilliant job weaving the two threads together, building both tension and character depth. The action is relentless, but what makes this stand out from other thrillers is Peake himself—damaged, morally gray, yet surprisingly sympathetic. He’s no Jack Reacher clone; he’s more complex, more fallible, and far more human.
The supporting cast adds texture, though some could have been fleshed out further, and a few timeline shifts felt a little abrupt. Still, those minor flaws are outweighed by the tight pacing, the layered plotting, and the way Sinclair balances brutal action with glimpses of Peake’s vulnerable side.
Dead Reckoning is a gripping start to what promises to be a standout series. If you like your thrillers raw, gritty, and character-driven, this one is well worth picking up.
Dead Reckoning by Rob Sinclair was an excellent first book in a new Simon Peake series. It was full of action, and was fast paced from the very beginning which I loved! there was never a boring moment. I loved the main character Simon Peake, he was a character you could not trust but he does care. . . . . but finds it hard to show, he just isn’t sure about what right now for him. He is now living an ex-soldier’s life and is close to be rock bottom, but there was something about him that drew you towards him. . . .
Now, he needs a job and a quiet life to go with it. . .
Simon finally get a job and starts to work for a New York based Irish mobster called Harry Lafferty, But all he has done was got himself in a whole lots of trouble which he doesn't need right now! The job is a big one and it requires him to use his special skills on some very unsavoury people.
As Simon his hardest to tries to walk the fine line between surviving in this new life, and atoning for his old one, but he is struggles on both counts. Then his past comes back to bite him, and those closest to him are threatened, the reckoning will be merciless for anyone who stands in his way.
WoW this was a book I just enjoyed from the very first few pages and could not put it down, I am looking forward to the next book within the Simon Peake series . . . It's going to be a cracking series.
My first Rob Sinclair and I'm hooked! So many amazing shifts between two timelines leaves you guessing about "what led to which repercussion?" and "who is actually behind the what?"
Usually, I can pretty quickly figure out the general plot, who (or least what group of who's) but not here. My personal guesses and "what ifs" were constantly challenged or proven wrong and the finale, while somewhat guessable about half to 2/3rds of the way through, still left me pleasantly surprised!
But what I liked best was the absolute 'realness' of Simon Peake, the main character. He was no super-human, expert in All The Things. He was an expert in His One Thing, in this case, combat, and even there only within his spaces. Decent with firearms, but not every single one, fantastic in hand to hand, but not a robot - he's emotionally deeply, deeply battered from his past. And the more we learn what he experienced, endured, and doled out, the more 'real' he becomes.
As I mentioned, this is my first Sinclair book. ABSOLUTELY will not be my last.
A massive thank you to Rob Sinclair, Boldwood Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this incredible story. All opinions are my own.
My turn for the Book Blog Tour …. Pub Date Jun 23 2025 Boldwood Books
I don’t think I have read anything by this author before … I’m not sure! Not normally my type of book BUT I’m glad I read it and I did enjoy it. I think k it being the first book in a series helped. Would I read this author again … absolutely!
The most dangerous people are those with nothing to lose. Who don't care if they live or die. Simon Peake does care… he just isn’t sure about what right now. I have read a few of Mr Sinclair's books now and can safely say that I am a fan; this, the first in a new series, has cemented that fandom 😉
Simon Peake is ex-UK special forces living in New York; he has recently been released from prison, he is a loner, doesn't always make the right choices and is desperately in need of work. With few options, he starts to work for an Irish mob-boss which gets him into all manner of scrapes and dodgy situations. There's also the small matter of him having started a relationship with the mob-boss' niece and he lives opposite a working woman who is not treated well by her clients.
Told over two timelines - one the present and the other in the past when Peake was on a mission in the Middle East - both as riveting as each other, Dead Reckoning is full of action, violence, fantastic characters and tension and all told at a fast pace that had me absolutely hooked from the first page.
Definitely recommended to those of you who enjoy reading action/thrillers and I am looking forward to following Simon Peake's trials and tribulations in the future. Many thanks to the author, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of this, the first in what is likely to be an explosive series.
Simon Peake is ex military and an ex convict. A man of convictions but dangerous when provoked. He’s found himself in New York, struggling to pay the rent and to survive. His solution is to work his way into a local gang as a driver and gopher, he is not really trusted but has some skills that are of use. He finds himself in the middle of a number of agendas and dealing with some very dangerous people. He has very few friends and he may struggle to keep them out of the firing line. Unusual this in a few ways, Peake is very much an anti-hero and a real mix of self interest and morality. We also get to see a lot of his past in a military unit deep undercover which provides more background to his ability and character and may have links to his current situation.
I enjoyed this. Refreshingly downbeat and different and I liked that the main story stayed rooted in the criminal underbelly of New York. Peake was complex and I’d be delighted to see more of him.
Thanks, @netgalley , the author @robsinclairauthor and the publishers for the ARC.
This is the1st book in the new Simon Peake series. I've read all the other books that this author has written, so I had high hopes for this one, and it didn't disappoint too much. Peake seems to be quite a complex character, clearly struggling with PTSD from his experiences in the military, who is a little down on his luck. The story runs in 2 parallels; one when he was in the military and the other present day, where he becomes a bit of a gopher for a notorious Irish family. It did seem, in my opinion, a little bit discombobulated at times, the characters just didn't really flow together, and it did feel like I was reading two completely different stories, even though by the end, some of it made more sense. This is clearly a character character who is going to develop in the next installments, so I look forward to reading them!
Wow this was a good book it’s part of 2 book series and if you like thrillers this is perfect

This fast-paced thriller had me hooked by the end of the first chapter. Peake finds himself embroiled with the local Mafia. Peake is ex-military, he's also an ex-con, and he's quite a complex character. The story has a dual timeline - when he was in the military and the present day. This action-packed read is filled with twists. This is an enjoyable start to a new series.

British American Simon Peake, ex-military, ex-con is living in Brooklyn desperate for money when a former cell mate recommends he visit his Irish hoodlum cousins, the Lafferty's for a job. He's hired as a driver and 3 of the 4 cousins are A-holes and the other Sean, not too bad.
He's keeping his head down, trying to stay out of trouble when it always seems to find him. He's protective (looking out for his neighbor an escort). dating Harry Lafferty's niece Katy and driving the "boys" to pickups. Watch out for Harry- he's the boss and into anything to make a buck!
Meanwhile the story jumps back to his time in the military and why he got the boot (so distracting) and it doesn't jive with the rest of the storyline until nearly the end). Simon has a temper that takes a while to build but once unleashed, it's not good for the opposition.
Not a bad story but the past/present switch throughout is annoying. About a 2.5 for me because of that.
Simon is a man down on his luck. A former soldier, he's fallen far from his heroic past. He's not proud of having gone to jail for assault, but he's not ashamed of why he went. As far as he's concerned it was worth a few years of his life.
But now he's out, he's broke, and possibly about to make another monumental error by trying to meet the shady contact at O’Hare’s bar in the hope of earning enough to stave off his sticky landlord.
Simon is soon in with the Irish mob and he's realising that there is a lot more going on than he bargained for. New allies and friends are hard to find and he's going to have to rely on muscle memory and street smarts to get him through.
A brilliantly twisty crime thriller with a likable but flawed hero. He's not afraid to do the wrong thing for the right reason and it kills him when people he has started to care about are getting hurt because of him and his choices. Shady Irish Mob mixes with Middle Eastern politics and there are a range of dangers to thwart.
Y’all, buckle up, because Simon Peake isn’t here to play nice—unless breaking bones counts as nice. 😎
This book? A gritty, gut-punch of a ride. Peake’s a broken ex-soldier just trying to keep his head down, but of course that doesn’t last long. He ends up working for a shady Irish mobster in NYC (because of course), and suddenly “quiet life” turns into “use your very particular set of skills on very bad people.” Cue chaos.
It’s fast, raw, and feels like a gritty 90s action thriller with a soul. Think Jack Reacher meets The Departed with a splash of emotional damage.
If you’re into anti-heroes, mob drama, and high-stakes moral conflict—you’ll devour this one. Just don’t expect to come out clean.
Thank you to Boldwood Books for providing this advance copy via NetGalley for my honest, voluntary review.
Simon Peake, ex-army, ex-con and broke, gets tangled up with a gang because he needs money fast. He also manages to get tangled up with the boss’s niece – not a good career move. The fact that some members of the gang don’t like or trust him, doesn’t help.
There was plenty of action from the start, which I enjoy, and Simon’s backstory is neatly woven into the storyline to show how he became the man he is today. But I always felt that something was missing. As a character Simon never really gelled with me, I kept expecting that something else would come to light in his past, something to explain why he is what he is. A ‘lightbulb’ moment but that never happened. Maybe more will come to light in the next book?
Thanks to Boldwood Books and net galley for an ARC for my honest review.
Peake's an interesting character with a knack for attracting trouble. He does seem to have a strong sense of justice although his career choices haven't led him in the right direction at times. I liked the switch between past and present as you get to see more of Peake's motivations. He's very much a pawn in what he does and there's not much difference between the job he does years ago and the one he's stuck with in the present. Both are dangerous and he needs to take orders from someone. He's not given all the facts and clearly can't trust people around him.
There's a softer side to him and I like that you see that. He's resourceful and takes care of people that need it.
I think this ended well and I'm intrigued as to where Peake might end up next.
The first book in a new series features Simon Peake, a man with a wealth of special skills, but he's not in a good place. Out of prison, he needs money to survive and finds it working for a crime boss. There are interfamily feuds and wider gang rivalries that Peake has to negotiate to survive. His past, which has led him to his dark present, is gradually revealed alongside his current life. He is, unsurprisingly, a man with a distinct moral code that frequently clashes with society's. Peake's emotional issues and need for justice make him a character you invest in. The urban setting is well described, and the cast of characters is relatable. It's action-packed, brutal and suspenseful, which makes a compelling read. I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Simon Peake is an all action, mysterious character. A man with a military background and with special skills. and also a with a past he'd like to forget. Based in New York he's down on his luck and anxious to find work, he's willing to do anything. By contacting a notorious family of unorthodox businessmen he finds himself drawn into the underworld of dangerous gangs, not knowing who to trust. This book is on a dual timeline with one part based in the middle east in troubled times with Peake part of a secret mission, one which shapes his character. As is normal with this author there is no shortage of action, violence and killings. It is very fast paced and a very good read.
Simon Peake has reached an exceptionally low place in his life, and finds himself working for a mobster. He finds himself surrounded by unsavory people, and his survival may depend on how well he can play their game.
I have enjoyed other titles by this author, but not this one. The action and the characters were jumping around so much that I couldn't tell which end was up half the time. Even though the main character was down and out, I felt little sympathy for him and zero connection, making it difficult to enjoy the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
A fast paced, gritty thriller, told over two different timelines by Simon Peake. He is now living in New York and has recently left prison, in the earlier timeline he is in the army somewhere in the middle east. Peake attracts trouble wherever he is and he can also defend himself so there is plenty of violence, some fairly graphically described , in this book. Both timelines do come together later in the book. I liked the fast pace and enjoyed this action packed book. Peake is a villan with a heart and it takes a little while to get to know him. I'd like to read more about him and will look out for more by this author. Thanks to Net Galley for the chance to read this book.
