Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express

An utterly magical, escapist Christmas romance, perfect for fans of Eliza J. Scott, Sarah Morgan and Veronica Henry!

A honeymoon for one on the most romantic train journey in the world… what could possibly go wrong?

When Aubrey’s fiancé dumps her – literally at the altar – just days before Christmas, her first thought is for the honeymoon. A luxury snow train, winding through Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets, stopping in places like Paris and Stockholm, before ending in Lapland, to stay in igloos under the Northern Lights.

It was meant to be the most romantic ten days of her life. And now she has to go it alone. But arriving on the train – where, not wanting to be known as someone who was jilted, she might have accidentally implied her new husband died in a horrible accident – she finds she’s not the only singleton on board.

The group of single passengers quickly nickname themselves ‘The Unlucky in Love Travel Club’… But – as the train gathers pace – so do Aubrey’s feelings for absurdly handsome travel journalist, Jasper.

And she starts to wonder – as fireworks explode over the snow – whether her magical Christmas honeymoon-for-one might be just what she needs. And if she might not be as unlucky in love as she’d thought…

EXCERPT: 16 December, Kent, England
Wedding Day

I have the sudden urge to run.
That would be OK if: (a) I was the running type and (b) it wasn't my wedding day.
No one mentions wedding jitters are this intense, do they? My bridal party excitedly chatter ten to the dozen, while I lock a rictus smile into place that hides my inner angst. It takes a surprising amount of effort to get facial muscles to cooperate. My laissez-faire expression can't be fooling anyone because my makeup artist, Rox, says, 'Blink twice if you need help.
A burst of hysterical laughter escapes me. 'Whaaat . . .? I'm fine. I'm good. I'm great.' Her eyes narrow. Have I overdone it? I dig myself in deeper. 'I'm marrying the man of my dreams in a Christmassy winter wonderland wedding. What's not to like?'

ABOUT 'LAST STOP ON THE WINTER WONDERLAND EXPRESS': A honeymoon for one on the most romantic train journey in the world… what could possibly go wrong?

MY THOUGHTS: A little too 'chic-lit' and 'insta-love' for me, but I loved the travel aspect of the story. However, despite the wonderful settings, I failed to feel the love.

Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express is a sweet read involving a jilted bride, a honeymoon for one, unexpected friendships and a whole heap of wonderful travel on the way to a new romance. There are some incredible characters, Princess for one, and some witty conversations, but I found it difficult to connect with the MC, Aubrey. I can understand her not wanting to be known as the jilted bride when she is on a train surrounded by loved-up couples, but her attempts to right the situation were laughably pathetic to say the least, especially when the rumors about his mode of death were becoming more and more far-fetched.

I liked the 'Unlucky in Love' Travel Club, where the solo travelers on the trip banded together and provided support for one another. I'm not a fan of 'insta-love' romances and, although I appreciate that Aubrey and Jasper didn't immediately jump into bed together, I would have liked their romance to have been a bit slower, especially since they were both recovering from bad break ups and should have been a bit warier of one another than they were.

Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland was just an 'okay' read for me. It's the first book by Rebecca Raisin that I haven't fallen head over heels in love with, so maybe it's me and not the read. If you are in the market for a Christmas romance with a magical setting, you could do worse than pick up a copy of Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express.

DISCLSOURE: Thank you to Boldwood Books via NetGalley for providing an e-ARC of Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.

I combined reading with listening to Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express written by Rebecca Raisin and narrated by Laura Kirman. Although I have no complaints about Kirman's narration, I did prefer reading to listening.

Aubrey is ready for her wedding day and her honeymoon on a slow train through Europe—except her fiancé, as it turns out, isn't. And so she finds herself on a solo honeymoon, seeking her solace in a merry band of solo-traveler misfits.

I'm a sucker for a travel story, and this hit some sweet spots—train travel, Scandinavia (well, for some of it), Christmas markets...it is hard to go wrong with those things. Aubrey is upset about her fiancé's abrupt ghosting, of course, but she's also pretty rational about it: she doesn't know what's next, but she's not looking for an apology and reconciliation; she's level-headed enough to take this as a sign that something wasn't right in the relationship and to go from there.

The surrounding cast of characters is eccentric. Sometimes excessively so—they all tend to talk as though they're in a 1950s movie, or a Mabel Maney book—but I guess they grew on me as time went on. It helped that Raisin leans into the absurd: when Aubrey impulsively tells someone that her husband is dead, her lie takes on a life of its own, with different travelers believing different things (and, of course, each tale getting wilder than the next). I didn't need the lie (it would have been enough of an impediment to the book's primary romance for Aubrey to say, reasonably, "I just got dumped, and I'm not ready for something new"), but if it was there...well, I enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek element.

From a writing perspective, this is middling, but Aubrey's attitude won me over: not just about her ex, but also her overall perspective on travel (lots of it, please, but on a budget) and her honest self-interrogation about what she wants in a relationship...and whether or not that involves a white picket fence. It's nice to see. (Also nice: the fiancé eventually shows up again, and multiple sane adult conversations between various characters take place. I love books with sane adult conversations about relationships.) And, by the end of the book, two of the characters are planning a Camino pilgrimage. Please, please can there be a follow-up book that takes place on the Camino...? Aubrey's sister could walk it and find a lady lover! Or some new character! And I'd get to pretend that I was on the Meseta again...

I received a free copy of, Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express, by Rebecca Raisin, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Audrey decides to go on her honeymoon alone, after she is jilted by her ex fiancee. The Winter Wonderland Express, sounds like a great train ride, especially at Christmas time. This was a sweet holiday read.

I've enjoyed the Last Stop On The Winter Wonderland Express a lot. It brought me on a winter adventure around North Europe, among the most famous Christmas markets, on a very hot Summer day.

Aubrey decided to still go on her dream Honey Moon alone after she was jilted at the altar. At the start of her trip she felt extremely lonely and awkward to be on a luxurious train surrounded by happy couples, fortunately along the way she finds a group of good friends.

I loved Aubrey, she is very likeable and determined. I adored how these characters became hopeful, finding a new beginning thanks to each other help and advices.

Rebecca Raisin writing is so smooth and flowing that I think her stories are always too short, because I read them too quickly.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for kindly giving me an advanced copy of this book to read.

Enjoyable, cozy story of finding friendship and love while traveling abroad. Aubrey gets jilted on her wedding day and decides to continue onto the extravagant holiday train traveling in Northern Europe. She’s grieving the end of her relationship and everyone thinks she is newly widowed. On board, she falls into a social group with other solo travelers including the wealthy Princess, and American travel writer Jasper. The book follows each of their stops on the train journey and it’s hard to not be jealous of this trip! The story is on the slower pace and cozy side and is a chaste romance (only kissing). Check it out.

Wow, another charming, heart-warming reading experience! Every book of Rebecca Raisin’s I have read so far has been a winner and this one is no exception. In fact, I think it is even a notch higher as although this is a romantic comedy, it is jam packed in serious deep relationship experiences and useful wisdom. There’s lots of amazing witty dialogue, and an eclectic mix of friendly characters that round out this story beautifully. I was constantly nodding my head in agreement with the comments, advice and directions these people went. So without doubt, I truly enjoyed the unforgettable ride on The Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express. There’s a real richness and maturity in this novel’s content and presentation. The settings are so well described, I felt transported to each location on route. There’s plenty of action too and the plot has some alluring twists.

On Audrey’s wedding day, she has a case of the massive jitters but It seems she is not alone. For her fiancé Miles abandons her before she even makes it up the aisle to the altar. He disappears leaving her shocked, hurt and embarrassed. How could she not know this was coming? She didn’t! Worse still, he does not talk to her and tell her what is going on. He just evaporates. It is only a few days to Christmas and her longed for luxury honeymoon must be dealt with. Feeling confused and heart-broken, she decides to take the ten day romantic train ride alone. But she does not want anyone there to know she has been jilted. So while on board, the facts get a bit murky. She implies her ‘husband’ has died tragically so the sympathy flows from those around her. Quickly she discovers she is not the only one alone as there are a number of single people on the trip. And this group of sad lonely hearts bond and draw close. They pitch the name of their group as The Unlucky in Love Travel Club. What follows is an interesting exploration of how people deal with grief, heartbreak and disappointment. Plus wonderful friendships are made in their moments of need. This journey even brings love into the lives of some—including Audrey. A certain travel journalist named Jasper is full of surprises and their friendship erupts into something more but it is a slow dance with romance for these two. Yet beautifully rendered by the author.

I loved all the quirky, witty, warm characters and their intriguing stories. The whole reading experience was a delicious treat. Rebecca Raisin has delivered another top notch romantic comedy full of depth, desire, dreaminess and delight. Who wouldn’t want to take the Winter Wonderland Express to Paris, Stockholm and end up in Lapland staying in an igloo gazing up at the Northern Lights! This fun, moving, uplifting story contains wonderful resolutions. It teaches that although your life may not go as planned and you could end up on a different path than expected, the detour could lead to glorious surprises, endearing friendships and unexpected soul-mate love. As Audrey finds out, everything happens for a reason! 5 wintry Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~~I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review~~

I absolutely looooved this book! It was such a cosy, feel good book which is what I was searching for in this summer heat (bleh). I loved the FMC and the storyline. I would've loved a bit more exploration in the different cities Aubrey visited, but the other characters and gossip made up for it.

I, too, now want to go on the winter wonderland express!

The Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express is filled with humor, unexpected romance, Christmas marts, train travel, and northern lights.

Aubrey is anticipating her romantic honeymoon on the Wonderland Express…until her fiancé leaves her standing at the altar. Even though she knows the trip will be filled with romantic couples, she decides to take the Wonderland Express trip anyway and enjoy visiting the European Christmas Marts and seeing the Northern Lights. Impulsively, she announces that her husband has died tragically, a decision she later regrets. She joins a small group of other singles who label themselves The Unlucky in Love Travel Club, and she meets a handsome journalist, Jason.

A colorful and quirky cast of characters provides plenty of opportunities for humor, hilarious situations, and witty banter. Some of it borders on absurd, but if you go with it and are looking for an entertaining and light read, this does not disappoint.

I admire a main character who knows herself, is independent, and confident. Aubrey doesn’t know why her fiance has left her at the alter, but she is level-headed and trusts the relationship enough to suspect that he must have a good reason. She’s concerned but doesn’t blame herself or fall apart. She decides to take the trip and make the best of a difficult and awkward situation. Aubrey knows what she wants in a committed relationship and is not afraid to communicate that to Jason. Aubrey and her ex-fiancé have an honest, adult discussion about what happened. I appreciate all the mature communication!

What’s not to love about festive, holiday train travel through Europe? Add a few Christmas Marts and the northern lights!

Fans of escapist reads, train travel, zany humor, and unexpected romance will find lots to appreciate about the Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express.

went between the ebook and audiobook for this book. The narrator was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Such a feel good, romantic escape. Aubrey's fiance ditches her at the alter, and she decides to go on her honeymoon alone. A luxury snowy train ride through Europe stopping at the amazing Christmas markets, with stops in Paris and Stockholm, and finally ending in Lapland to stay in an Igloo under the Northern Lights.  She meets a group of other single passengers and ends up developing feelings for Jasper, a handsome journalist. Overall, this was just lovely. It has humor, I loved this cast of entertaining and quirky characters. I love a story about finding happiness again and the travel through Europe sounds like the best thing ever. I want to go on this train ride! 😍 Highly recommend it if you enjoy Christmas romance books!

I adored this book. I laughed, teared up and was smiling away like a Cheshire Cat.

Travel obsessed Aubrey is supposed to be having the most magical Christmas, she’s getting married. At least that’s what she thought was happening, until her fiancé leaves her at the altar!

Heartbroken and confused she decides screw it, I’ve paid a fortune for this honeymoon, I’m going! So off she goes to spend 10 days on the Winter Wonderland Express. There she meets an eclectic bunch of singles who dub themselves “The Unlucky In Love Travel Club” one of whom is the handsome Jasper who Aubrey feels an instant connection with. But will she risk it all again and open her heart.

This is definitely the most magical Christmas read for me so far this year. Being a travel junkie myself I soaked in each and every stop described along the way, wishing for gluhwein, truffles and cheese galore.

It also has my favourite trope “found family”. All the characters are loveable but none moreso than the fabulously loud, charismatic and filthy rich Princess.

If you haven’t already, definitely give this one a go.

This is a gorgeous feel good story about friendship, love and all things Christmas.
I’m a huge fan of all things Christmas and the trip on The Winter Wonderland Express sounded perfect. What’s not to like about travelling onboard a gorgeous train and stopping at festive cities every day.
I thought the characters on board were so good - each of them had their own reasons for being on board and very quickly I fell for all of the Unlucky In Love travel group. Their camaraderie and support for each other was perfect. Aubrey has not had it easy and I could understand her trepidation of being a ‘singleton’ on a romantic train journey but she’s soon gathered up by Princess - my favourite character - and it’s nonstop from then on. Romance is obviously not on the cards after being jilted but the chemistry between Aubrey and Jasper is obvious and I loved seeing their friendship grow. This story made me laugh and have a few tears as I was swept up in the magic of the train and the cities visited.

This was a cute Christmas-time book featuring a jilted bride who takes her honeymoon by herself on a luxury train through northern Europe. Aubrey quickly makes friends with a group of other unlucky in love travelers. By the end of the book, everyone in the group has pretty much found a new love.

I read this as part of Instabook Tours and received this as an ARC from NetGalley & Boldwood Books.

Cosy Christmas story that is set on a train which stops at different European cities, to experience their unique & traditional festivities all while the train its self is a literal winter wonderland.

Aubrey is a 39 year old ditched bride on her wedding day and she decides to go on her honeymoon solo. Shes no stranger to solo travel as she has always loved to just get away and her career as a freelance travel agent who specialises in special and memorable trips, means this was too good of an opportunity to miss.

Aubrey meets some wonderful people inc a fabulous princess, Sabrina the bubbly yet clumsy staff member who is more like a friend and Jasper who literally takes her breath away, along with a few others who all form this bond and call themselves the Unlucky in Love Travel club.

This is a perfect cosy festive read, glass of baileys and a warm fire.

Audrey gets stood up at the altar and decides that instead of feeling sorry for herself, she's going to go ahead and take the honeymoon she planned by herself to recover, except she finds herself amongst a band of other solo travelers so she doesn't have to be alone. But the real fun is in all the characters she meets in the train-they grow on you so much and think she is widowed so they feel sorry for her and take her under their wing while they're on their way to Lapland, which is a bucket list destination for me, so that adds something to the story because along the way they make stops and it all sounds lovely. There's loads of witty dialogue and the setting along the way at each of the stops, and even on the train made me want to take the trip with Audrey and then by then end you're in an igloo looking at the Northern Lights! Sign me up!

Another fabulous fun read by Rebecca Raisin. The only disappointing part is that the Winter Wonderland Express does not exist and I really want to go on this trip! 😜

I love how Rebecca brings you to the heart of the characters in this book and the positivity and joy I get from reading her stories.

Aubrey has just been left at the alter on what was supposed to be her fairytale wedding. This passionate explorer learns and accepts who she is as she enjoys her honeymoon on the Winter Wonderland Express without her should-have-been-husband. Her journey takes her places she never thought existed.

There are so many big personalities in this book and getting to know each of them makes me want to book a holiday asap!

It’s only October but I’m ready to kick off the Christmas season, put the tree up, make hot chocolate, light a fire and soak up the holiday vibes! I also really want to stay in an igloo in Lapland!

Favourite Quotes:

“So what if the only exercise I get is running for plane connections or reading romantasy novels - those epic times are heavy, I’ll have you know, and are responsible for my biceps that have the tiniest amount of definition from so many late nights reading.” Page 112

“…and it makes my heart go bongo.” Page 141

“Oh God. How to kidnap me 101: tell me there’s a log fire and books.” Page 217

“‘The hint of a smile shows her quiet determination. She’s a woman who has faced many challenges but persists and ultimately prevails.’
When I gaze back at Mona Lisa with that in mind, the painting changes; a different history takes shape. Was she a mother, a wife, a woman who suffered heart rending loss but persevered? Questions that will never be answered but that make the artwork sing its own sweet melody; it becomes not just an object but a story.” Page 71

Honestly this is just the book I needed to start my December. It’s such a Christmassy story, and although the story starts with a heartbreak for the protagonist, it quickly becomes a funny, happy, feel-good story with a burgeoning romance at its centre. The travel aspect added some nice cosy aspects to the story as they travelled to different cities on route to Lapland.

The characters were fun, although sometimes seemed larger than life and a little unbelievable, but it worked. Aubrey and Jasper I loved, along with Sabrina particularly. There is of course a final ‘confrontation’ between Aubrey and the man who dumped her at the altar, but it is sane and sensible, same as the conversation between Aubrey and the new man in her life. I like when these conversations are sensible and not blown out of proportion by the almost-inevitable miscommunication and someone taking something the wrong way, that gets boring when it’s in every book you read, so this was a very positive change from the norm in that respect!

I loved basically all of the characters in this book, and I would love to see a follow-up story maybe featuring Rox or Princess as a main character and see how that unfolds with all of the characters on another adventure, maybe the summer voyage they’re planning? Please! The characters are at the heart of this book – at the centre are the singletons on the train who have been unlucky in love, some unwilling to give it another go, but others up for it with the right person.

It's a story of love, hope, and accepting that you can’t change who you are, and that you shouldn’t change to be with someone. The wintery and Christmassy setting makes for a fun and uplifting narrative, easy to read. I just dive into Rebecca Raisin’s books and it’s often difficult to come up for air until I’ve finished them. This is one of her absolute best.

What a wonderfully lovely tale this is!
Firstly the beautiful cover, how perfect is that?

When Aubrey is deserted by her fiancé, on their wedding day, she decides to go off on their honeymoon alone. A train ride through many European cities, all dressed to their finest in Christmas apparel, the perfect romantic trip!!
On board she meets others who are also single for various reasons and begins to make friendships that could last a lifetime, despite a hilarious misunderstanding shall we call it!

I love the writing style of this one, the easy banter between Aubrey and her sister and the humour that runs throughout the book. There’s clearly been a lot of research put into all the different stops on this train, all the different things each country has to offer. Everything is described so well that you feel you are walking among the tourists, enjoying all the festive treats.

The characters are all written so well and you get to know them all throughout the story. Princess will definitely be a favourite for many, she’s witty, she’s stern, she gets what she wants, but she is a brilliant friend, she will be there whether you think you need her or not, but we may just get to see her sensitive side too.

Over all a fantastic wintery tale, of loss, of love, of new found friends, of opening your heart to the possibilities that lie ahead.

I loved the ending so much, there is definitely a sequel to be had to this one, so many adventures to be told!

Thank you Rebecca and Boldwood for the opportunity to read this wonderful book.

Netgalley Review

The writing was light, entertaining and together with some wonderful descriptions, painted the most magical Christmas scenes. It was a joy to read from start to finish. Everything about it felt festive and cosy.

The chapters were fairly long and sometimes split so you got a good chunk of the story before moving on. Each of the chapters had a date and place name so you always knew when and where you were reading. This was particularly helpful because you were travelling through a number of different countries.

There was a good pace to the book. I enjoyed being on the journey with all of the characters and watching how they all evolved. The chapter dates and titles helped to move the story on.

There was a good flow between the chapters and I could happily read it for long periods of time. I looked forward to picking the book back up at each reading session and fully immersing myself in the Christmas magic.

The characters were excellent. They were all vulnerable in some way and it was nice to see them realise what their vulnerability was and to work with it.

There was so much love and support between the characters that was lovely to read about and helped to make it a cosy, festive read.

Lastly the settings. They were amazing. They really made the story. The descriptions of the markets and other surroundings breathed life into the story and gave it a festive feel. There was a good balance between the description of the settings and what the characters were going through so you never felt bogged down by one or the other.

Overall a book that oozes Christmas magic. If you only read one book over the festive period, it needs to be this one. A must read this festive season!

Last Stop on the Winter Wonderland Express by Rebecca Raisin.
I loved the cover and blurb of this book. The cover was why I signed up. Plus it's a Christmas book. This is the third book I've read by this author. It's a lovely cosy read. I did like Aubrey and Jasper's story. I liked the writing style and the story. I loved how different this book was. A lovely train ride sounds magical. I would love to know if there will be a follow-up book.

3 stars for the story, 4+ stars for the trip. This was a lot of Christmas and it’s exactly the kind of book you’d assume it would be. Cheesy, unrealistic but has that Christmas spirit. There were a lot of times where I thought we could have more dialog with the main characters, especially Jasper. It would just say “we went sight seeing, or we went to the bar” and it really misses opportunity to show the bonding of the love interests. So overall, 3.4 stars. Now let’s go on this train ride!

My daughter’s review was perfect for this one. 3.0 for the story and 4.0 for geographical setting. Maybe a 2.0 on the Hallmark holiday romance scale. She recommended this book to me because of my travel to these points of interest. I had a blast reminiscing and personalizing. There was a touch of humor that read like ‘The Guncle’ helps his family do a Christmas train trip. It’s cute and worth the time.

I loved this book. It was so magical. The train ride, the destinations, the food descriptions. Even though the book started out with heartbreak, I'm glad there was closer and a chance to heal and move forward. VanLife made an appearance and I hope Jasper and Aubrey's experience is everything they want it to be.

Aubrey is getting ready for her wedding and honeymoon, when her fiancé leaves her standing at the altar. She has been excited about her romantic honeymoon on the Wonderland Express, so decides to still take the trip. She knows it will be filled with couples celebrating their love and relationships, but goes anyway. She is looking forward to visiting the various European Christmas markets and seeing the Northern Lights. Obviously, this wasn't the relationship she thought it was and she wants to move on, very level headed of her. Instead of telling the truth about what happened, she announces that her husband died tragically, which she will come to regret. She joins up with "The Unlucky in Love Travel Club" that are also on the train. She's not looking for romance, but meets a handsome journalist, Jasper, who complicates things.

This was fun story. I've always wanted to visit the European Christmas Markets as well as Scandanavia, so this book allowed me to do that vicariously. The cast of characters were extremely varied. I loved the quirky and eccentric personalities they had. I do enjoy Rebecca Raisin's humor, sometimes subtle, sometimes over the top. There is a lot of self-examination of what Aubrey wants out of life, and in a relationship and life partner. I liked Jasper as well. He was there to support her, but not crowd her. I liked that there is closure with Aubrey and her ex, as they have an honest discussion about what happened and what they are looking for in a relationship. Aubrey is a character I loved, independent, smart and loving to travel. I was happy to see her come to grips with her past relationship and willing to give a new one a try. This is a story with lots of holiday cheer, travel, humour, friendship, Christmas Markets and Northern Lights. A great story to escape into.

I'm now wanting to go on a winter wonderland express train ride. This train sounded so idyllic, serene, the rooms sound atunning and the attention to detail was second to none.

Rebecca's books never fail to make me smile and have me wanting to go galavanting all over the world.

I definitely have caught the travelling and exploring bug this year and this book has just added fuel to the fire.
