This is such a complex and intricate story. It’s a story of love, but also of grief, pain and overcoming. The story underneath the story is profound, especially in the times we find ourselves in and the call to change our reality through love is an important one. I savored every page I read in this book. It made me feel so much but it also made me think about life and our existence. It was action packed and filled to the brim with passion and exhilaration. This tale of the Baobham Sith has been turned on its head in this book and I adore it!

True love will prevail. This is about females executed for unnatural acts. Or females thought to be witches burned. They have risen as Baobhan Sith. Supernatural beings with a trace of being vampires. The story partly comes from Scottish folk lore. But there is so much more to it. It fits in with the hatred and evil in our world today. I was enthralled by the story. I hope that the love could over come. It amazes me how it flows, and the author never missteps. Freya is such an awesome human. And Greer and Dior trust her with their truth. I highly recommend this book. There is a lot to learn.

Blood Marks is a hauntingly beautiful Sapphic dark fantasy that weaves Scottish folklore, romance, and suspense together seamlessly. Ruby Scott weaves a narrative that is both lush and haunting, set against the evocative backdrop of modern-day Edinburgh, where the past lingers like a shadow and the supernatural hides in plain sight.

At its heart is the electric relationship between architect Greer Morrigan Dubhán and artist Freya Solasta. When she encounters Freya Solasta, an artist with a rare and piercing insight, Greer’s carefully constructed world begins to unravel. Their connection is undeniable, magnetic, and steeped in a dangerous allure.

Scott’s prose is atmospheric and richly detailed, immersing the reader in Edinburgh’s streets, moonlit encounters, and the intoxicating tension between Greer and Freya. The romance is a slow burn, charged with yearning and the weight of secrets too dark to share. Meanwhile, an ancient enemy lurks in the periphery, threatening everything Greer has fought to protect.

The strength of the novel lies in atmospheric prose, a compelling character, and the chemistry between Greer and Freya. Their romance is tender, fierce, full of longing, tension, with the weight of choices to possibly change everything. So, adding an infusion of Scottish mythology makes for a tale timelessly original.

But what really sets Blood Marks apart is how it so effectively balances deep mythology with a contemporary thematic landscape: identity, control, and the fear of one's own nature are dealt with, even as it slowly unwinds into a love story that seems inevitable—as sure as fate itself.

Blood Marks has it all in store for readers hooked on modern, gothic romances full of forbidden desire swathed in legends and time-binding love affairs. Poetic and seductive, with thrill moments galore in this read and it'll show its marks until very far after you finished the book.

Highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy, Sapphic romance, and supernatural intrigue.

Ruby Scott has written a great story based around locations that if you've visited, Scotland, specifically Edinburgh you will recognise. It has a good supernatural, Baobhan sith (vampire), basis. Its a story that shows what love rather than hate can achieve. Even in the face of homophobic/supernatural hatred the main characters find a way to combat the increasing malevolent force of the Babd. If only the last few chapters in the book were true, the world would be a better place. Ruby has written a full length novel, it's not without loss, pain and a good deal of fear an anguish built in. If you enjoy a well written story with a supernatural basis then look no further. Its been a good few years since I've found a supernatural book this well written and engaging.

**Blood Marks** immerses readers in a rich blend of paranormal romance and Scottish folklore, centring on the captivating Baobhain Sith—vampiric Fae women rarely seen in sapphic fiction.

Right from the start, the story unfolds with a compelling atmosphere of tension and desire, and the first half focuses on the deepening bond between the main characters. This romantic build-up feels authentic, and the attention to detail shows in her well-developed protagonists.

As the plot progresses, the second half switches gears to a faster, action-driven narrative. Rather than being a simple good-versus-evil tale, it encourages different choices and perspectives, embracing empathy, love and understanding instead of clear-cut binaries.

Overall, Blood Marks stands out for shining a spotlight on a lesser-explored myth—perfect for readers seeking fresh, steamy takes on vampiric women, paranormal romance, and Fae fantasy.

Ruby Scott’s passion for Scottish mythology and her desire to see a more inclusive world come together beautifully in this engaging tale.

3.5 stars mainly for the premise and creativity.

This should have been a 5 star book for me. The lore was so unique and interesting. The prose was often beautiful. The atmosphere was intriguing. The story itself was beautiful and meaningful. It touched on themes that are deeply personal to me and should have been healing and moving.

But...the way the story was told just killed it. The tone shifts so dramatically after Freyas transformation that it didn't even feel like the same book anymore. Plot lines were dropped. They talked endlessly about plans but never made any moves on them. It was SO INCREDIBLY repetitive. I think probably 50% could have been cut just by editing out what read as summary paragraphs at the end of each chapter along with the endlessly repeated themes and ideas. The way the story is told is disjointed, fractured, and sometimes dream like. That can work, but here it just made me feel a distance from the plot as well as the characters and I struggled with why I should care about anything. I feel like I'm almost more mad at this book for being so close to being great, but falling so short when thorough editing could have saved it.

i really wanted to like this book. i loved the use of folklore to create a unique vampire story. however, the writing just left so much to be desired. the pacing was off, scenes were confusing, and a lot of information was repeated over and over again without much point. also, marketing this book as "steamy" was a mistake in my opinion, since there's barely any steam in the second half of the book. if this book ended after part one, i probably would give it a higher score.

Ruby Scott’s Blood Marks is an intoxicating blend of supernatural allure, intricate storytelling, and unrelenting passion. From the very first page, this novel seizes the imagination in a vice grip, refusing to release its hold until the very last word. It is a book that does not merely invite you into its world, it drags you in, heart pounding, breath hitching, utterly entranced.

The narrative structure is masterfully woven, each plot point unfolding with precision and purpose. Every twist and revelation is timed to perfection, keeping the reader teetering on the precipice of anticipation. Just when one believes they have grasped the trajectory of the tale, Scott deftly subverts expectations, crafting a plot that is as unpredictable as it is exhilarating.

Characterization is yet another triumph. The protagonists are dynamic, their development organic and compelling. They are not simply written but felt their emotions raw, their desires palpable. And when it comes to the steamy elements, Scott does not hold back; the tension simmers and ignites with an intensity that is both electrifying and deeply immersive.

At its core, Blood Marks is a testament to love’s resilience, a narrative that pulses with the undeniable force of passion and devotion. The sapphic elements are seamlessly interwoven, enhancing the novel’s depth and emotional resonance rather than merely existing for representation’s sake.

Scott’s prose is decadent yet fluid, her storytelling both sophisticated and utterly addictive. For those who revel in the supernatural, who crave fantasy tinged with romance and shadowed by intrigue, Blood Marks is nothing short of a literary feast. A dazzling, intoxicating, and beautifully crafted novel—one that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned.

The sign of a great author is when the book forces you to stop midway and just marvel at the incredible brain that dreamed up all that you’re reading. This is exactly what I experienced when reading Blood Marks. It isn’t a book that draws from personal experience, but rather it grabs imagination and creativity by the balls and absolutely runs with it!

I also love the fact that this book is mostly poly, bringing much needed representation and visibility for the community.

Blood Marks captures tortured broken hearts who fear hope but soon realise that hope and love are all that truly matter. Throw in the whirlwind artist who sees far too much and can take down the highest of walls, and you’re left with a riveting tale that you won’t want to put down! Trust me, my heavy eyelids at 1am can attest to this.

This book weaves together passion, fantasy, fear and love. And by the end, it leaves readers full of understanding and heart, achieved only through the vulnerability of complex characters. What’s not to love?! I’ve already started recommending this to friends and will continue to do so. This story is too much fun not to be read and the ending is everything!

I really enjoyed this story based on Scottish folklore about vampire-like beings known as the Baobhan Sith. The tale of an artist Freya who meets Greer and they are both drawn to one another. Their meeting sparks a reaction that echoes throughout the supernatural and natural worlds. Though there are forces at work that attempt to keep them apart, their union is one that cannot be stopped. The visual imagery used in the story really painted a picture for me, particularly when describing the special markings of the Baobhan Sith. I was intrigued with the way that the MCs are able to defeat the antagonist (I don't want to say more as it would spoil it). I do wish the story was a bit less repetitive in a few places, but otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the book. If you enjoy supernatural tales and want something different from the standard gothic vampire tale, then be sure to check out Blood Marks.

A beautiful story about love and acceptance.

Blood Marks was such an incredible read! I’d heard great things about it, so I had high expectations and it literally smashed all of them!

Opening with an interesting telling of Scottish folk law and an intriguing take on witches burned at the stake, I was immediately hooked and couldn’t wait to delve into this fantastical world.

I fell in love with every character, each one so wonderfully written. I honestly can’t choose a favourite! Greer’s broody mysterious nature will draw you in, Freya’s sweet but determined nature will have you falling in love and Dior’s hilarious one liners will give you all the comic relief you need in this dark tale! Together they are the ultimate powerhouse and the chemistry that all three of them share, will have you reaching for that fan! 🔥🌶️

A true lesson in love, acceptance and hope, can’t believe I waited so long to read it!

DNF at 35%. This just really doesn’t work for me. The folklore aspect of the story I really enjoyed, that part was cool! It was the story telling and the interactions of the main characters that I found annoying. The story itself felt jumpy and distorted, we jumped from scene to scene with no real process of how we got there. I felt like there was no build up of chemistry between the two FMCs, and it seemed like a lot of stuff happened off page and what we did get on page was rushed with rash decisions and lack of communication. These two meet then all of a sudden it’s love and oh I’m so dangerous you need to stay away…ugh. And the repetition! How many times can we use the words darkness and hunger and warn this girl that she can’t go back…we get it! I don’t know if it gets better as I didn’t make it half way but I didn’t want to spend the time to find out.

I love this story. It’s different to the ones I have read from Ruby so far but she writes so well and weaves such a compelling story it draws you deep into the supernatural world of the Baobahn Sith and gives a lovely new meaning to hunger and desire. The polyamorous relationship between the main characters is a great change too and is very hot! Each main character has distinctive personalities but they fit together perfectly to form connections of the deepest and purest form. I love a good story that combines myth with the “real” world well and this certainly does that. It carries you along brilliantly whilst experiencing danger, fear, grief, love and compassion and it builds to an ending that we could really do with in our current time. Just love it!

I am not usually a fan of Fantasy novels, but this one is so good that I can't help but keeping reading until the last page! It is very long but it is so addictive that pages just flying by and I am totally lost in the wonderful and dramatic tales of Scottish Vampires old and new, the story is based on the sad truth in history, but the author's brilliant imagination and masterful writing make the happy ending much more sweet. I totally changed my attitude about tattoos and body arts and make me appreciate them more. A delightful read indeed!

blood marks

A really enjoyable supernatural sapphic book that links with the destruction and hate in today’s world and, the wish we could replace it with love & kindness. I enjoyed the use of the Edinburgh Old Town and old curses as the basis of the story and, it really made you want to believe in it! The characters of Greer, Freya, Dior Agnes & Thomas work well as an eventual formidable joined unit and, I enjoyed how their parts unfolded. Thoroughly good read.

Great story using Scottish folklore and turning it into a modern day vampiric romantasy. But that’s not all there is to the story. It starts out intense and only escalates from there. If you think the book is going to be simply a sapphic love story between a human and a “monster”, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It was hard to put this one down.

Sapphic, supernatural, steamy. I love stories that bring folklore and the supernatural front and center. That blend the ancient and the modern into something more, showing us that ancient wisdom can help us with modern problems. And even more amazing is that it is a thoroughly queer story, celebrating the power of love in all its forms.
