So more of a 3.5 - I really liked the premise here, all the world's deities peacing out? Yep I'm down.
I liked Kat as well, though her quirkiness was almost TOO on point. This was (mostly) in first person so the snarky quirky comments were incessant.
What got me though was Kat's confession in the latter half of the book. It felt so...honest. It sort of touched on things that anyone who watched Buffy or Angel are familiar with - vampire + soul = angst conscious overload - but when paired with Kat's desperate attempts to be human again it rang way more genuinely.
She acknowledged that the atonement she was going for was selfish.
The secondary characters were delightful, Egya being my favorite because he didn't deny who he was, what he was but he found a way to balance. I can appreciate that. Also he got under Kat's skin.
The mystery part was confusing - as was the last part with the confrontation. A lot was happening and a lot of information was tossed out so I found it hard to concentrate.
Overall I'm intrigued by the next book and since this was a fast engaging book it's not an issue to keep going.
Mortality Bites is the story of Katrina Darling. When the gods left, Katrina was a vampire. With most of the world's magic gone, Katrina is human once again. Now she is a 19 year old girl with over 300 years of life experiences attending college. But fitting back into the mortal world isn't going to be easy for her. On her first day, she gets pegged as a weird girl, her fae warrior roommate needs a lot of help understanding humans, and the first person that is friendly to her is brutally murdered. I really like the concept of the main character being a former supernatural being that has been returned as a human. She has a tons of potential for internal drama. It combines and contrasts with the whole dynamic of the former supernatural Others fitting into the mortal world (and how both sides deal with it). The friends and allies that she makes in this first story also show different elements to this blending of the two groups. Speaking of her friends, the entire cast are great characters. I want to find out more about all of them. The weakest character was the villian of the piece mainly because their identity remained hidden until the conclusion (which makes sense of course.) I have read alot of different genres throughout my life. At various times, I have read epic fantasy, mystery, romance, science fiction, and so. My favorite genre to read currently is paranormal/urban fantasy. I like this sub-genre mainly because it tends to mix so many other genres together. You get fantasy, humor, romance, mystery, and action all mixed together usually. But you do need to watch out for trends where the books all tend to sound similar. Thankfully, this series seems to be exploring new ground. It has all of the stuff that I really enjoy about the genre and gives new twists so it stands out from all the rest. I am really looking forward to seeing to see where this series goes. I can see it quickly becoming one of my favorite series.
Overall, I found that this book was fairly good, but I had a few minor issues. For example, breaking the first person perspective with "Intermissions". While it's nice having insight on other events transpiring, it was frustrating separating the knowledge you had and the knowledge the main character had acquired. The first-person bias can be annoying, but it is extremely important. ~ A few of the jokes were also a bit bad, and even though the main character acknowledged that at times, it was never truly touched base on again. The "I'm thinking out loud again" parts were also a bit frustrating due to it's repetitiveness of "Oops I did it again."
Otherwise, it was a very enjoyable book. I liked the struggle the main character faced between the knowledge she gained as a vampire, and the difficulties of living as a teen in a different time period.
To start, this book is firmly in the YA category in my opinion.
The story has a great premise, but is heavily overshadowed by the overabundance of internal monologue and teenage angst. I felt there was little in the way of actual story. We have important things happen, interspersed with a heavy dose of angst filled internal monologue, and before we know it, the book is over.
I can't help but be a little disappointed, due to the reviews here and praise on Facebook. The story had potential, but sadly I DNF'd the series as a whole after starting the second book and being hit with more angst filled teenage monologue from our 300+ year old heroine.
Edit: This is a review of the audiobook, the narrator was awesome.
Irritatingly unputdownable. Best just to admit defeat and plunge in. So much fun and zips along, but the masterstroke continues to be the author's clever use of mythology. He uses it to give his books historical, character and narrative depth, and it just makes a wonderful palette with which to paint a story. It's that dollop of cleverness that sets Vance's books apart I think. Reason I look forward to each new book is that in each he 'paints' it a slightly different way, keeping them fresh (and I love the turns of phrase - genuine giggles on every page).
The use of parts and intermissions adds a Shakespearean touch to the stories, which I quite like. This is a rather different take on the gods and mythical creatures, showing a world gone mad when the gods abandon it.
The wicked humour is sprinkled liberally throughout to off-set the darkness. A very good balance, making for an enjoyable read.
Wonderful. All supernatural beings lose the magic that makes them what they have become when ALL the gods leave earth. This is a tale of the struggle some are going through being human again and trying to fit in. Loved it!
I really enjoyed the universe here... It's a bit Douglas Adams and a bit Monty Python and altogether fun to read! Interesting characters from all sorts of backgrounds populate it, too.
Well, all the gods of all the religions have decided to leave. Their parting message is that 'belief is not enough.' (Whatever that means.)
A couple of the major consequences: all vampires, werewolves and related creatures return to their human form, permanently. If that wasn't enough nearly all mythological creatures (fairies, pixies, dragons, gargoyles, etc) become real. Both groups try to somehow accustom themselves to human society. (The former creatures are referred to as The Others.)
The Others face a great deal of discrimination, partially since they look so different from 'normal' humans.
Katrina is a former vampire, around three hundred years old. She decides to enroll in a college that accepts Others into its ranks and she even manages to get a job with a nice old librarian right off Unfortunately, the nice old librarian is brutally murdered. Further, a monster tries to kill Katrina..
She manages to become friends with a couple of the Others but the situation gets worse as racial hatred gets worse. She tries to find out who is behind everything that has been going on, find someway to defeat them and also decide whether or not she's going to stay in college.
It all amounts to a very interesting and well-told book.
In this curious world, the Gods have disappeared leaving all those that were Other (vampires, werewolves, fairies etc) as human. Our main character Kat used to be a vampire...she’s now enrolled at university, determined to try and accustom herself to human existence. Unfortunately, her arrival at university coincides with someone rather deluded trying to slaughter humans in order to bring back the Gods. Kat finds herself collecting an odd assortment of friends to help battle this problem and save the world. It’s pretty pacy and there’s hints of a backstory that will probably crop up through the series. Entertaining enough, but not really anything exciting enough to make me want to keep reading.
Mortality Bites is a well written book by Ramy Vance. I started reading this book and soon realized it was connected to the GoneGod World series, but was set a little bit prior to it. You wonder for quite some time where the author was taking you since the plot seems to drift around quite a bit. The pace is ok since there is always something going on. Eventually you figure that there is a plot and once that happens I really enjoyed the book. There are some nice twists and they make sense, it is just until that point it was a lot of fluff in my eyes that could have done.
There is a good amount of character development, mostly because the author spent a lot of time building up to the actual plot in my eyes. Kat is a likable character who struggles with her adjustment to this new world she is living in, like a lot of the paranormal creatures are. She however is affected differently than the others since she became "normal" after the gods left and is trying to hide it from everyone, which seems to be a challenge.
I am curious to see where the author is taking this one. He made the other series rather complicated and I wonder if he will do the same here since I already saw some signs of that or will he keep it a little bit more straight forward. One thing is for sure, this book is very unique and different, which is always a huge plus in my eyes and I will come back to the next one to see what the author will come up with.
4.5 Stars! Highly entertaining action packed suspenseful thrilling adventure in this one. Its a new age, no gods, no immortals but lots of chaos, fear, acceptance, and mystery...I'd say it was dystopian but not...what it was is epic. I love Kat's character...she's quirky and funny.. she's trying to fit in but she's meant to stand out. I can't wait to read more from this author and more from this series.
I found this a little slow to begin with but as I got to know the characters better got more involved in the story line. Katrina the main character became stronger as the story progressed and by the end I was quite attached to her. I did feel the book jumped about a bit and didn't always finish dealing properly with all it's characters before going onto the next story. Sadly this wasn't the end of Kat's adventures so we don't get to hear she lived happily ever after!

Oh I needed that. The ending made me chuckle. Something different. This time it’s a vampire turned human after the gods abandoned the world taking their magic with them and dumping myths and fairytales on it instead. I liked how the MC was struggling to fit in despite her actual age. Would’ve liked to see more between her and the librarian. Pretty much a Scooby gang of supernaturals and ex supernaturals. Fast paced and fun. Looking forward to reading the next one.
I love this world, definitely a break from the standard supernatural. Authors writing style keeps me curious, intrigued and at times a little on edge. Cant wait to find out more about Kat’s life and adventures!! Im hooked.
An interesting, intelligent paranormal read. The Gods are gone, leaving Others a bit less than they once were. Something wants them back and will sacrifice all to get it done. Solve the mystery by reading about the students who might save all of humanity and others. A great read.
I love this new take on the supernatural genre....what happens to the world, and a certain female vampire when every God in the world decide to up and leave??. Vamps, series, witches and every magical creature are suddenly less than....human....what the heck will they do now? Katrina "Kat" Darling.... ex vampire extraordinaire enrolls in college of all things....o my her plans are thrown off kilter when her very first friend as a human is murdered. WTH??? All kinds of hijinx and interesting beings are met along the way. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
In the Gonegod world it's not just about who you are but also who you were that may be the problem
A great and totally unique storyline that feels so plausible that if it happened today it would be true in every way. Because in the Gonegod world the Others for unceremoniously dumped into Earth. But what nobody realized is that ordinary people who were Others like vampires and werewolves all of a sudden found out they were back to being human even hundreds of tears after turning. Now what's a girl to do? For this former camp it's go to college! Sometimes living a real life really bites.
Kat Darling is just trying to figure out university life, no easy feat when you’re a three-hundred-year-old ex-vampire. The Gods have left and Others, like Kat, are adapting to new lives, which isn’t easy when you’re targeted for hatred. As a result, Kat keeps to herself, but when the one friend she’s made is murdered and she is the prime suspect, Kat’s strategy doesn’t work. Mortality Bites has a strong female protagonist with a quirky sense of humour. A modern fantasy with a strong message about inclusion.
Intriguing story about what it would be like if all Gods left us, and we knew it.
The main character is a teen who had been a vampire, and she is trying to stone for what she did during that time. There is a ritualistic murder done on campus, she finds the body, and decides to find the killer.
It was a good start to the series. It left me interested enough to read the next one, and the heroine is a rather Unique character. As an EX vampire, Kat is still kick ass. Her quirk of speaking her thoughts out loud is silly, and humanizes her.
