A lady desperately seeking freedom. A prosperous younger man. An unexpected connection.

Anna Atwood returns to Breckenridge, where she spent one blissful summer as a young woman. This time, though, she comes to the quaint town as a penniless spinster with a single hope: to build a life free from the constraints her father’s death put on her and free from the persistent suitor Mr. Green, whose plans for marriage are Anna’s worst nightmare. When she runs into David Tate, the boy she knew from that memorable summer, she finds he has grown into a confident and striking man. As they rekindle their friendship, David offers her warmth and protection in the moment she needs it most—when Mr. Green appears in town and threatens to destroy Anna’s carefully laid plans.

David Tate remembers Anna as the spirited woman who once brought light into his dark childhood. Now a man of means, he has a promising future, if he can withstand the powerful Lord Murphy—a man whose menacing hold on the town he owns is surpassed only by his relentless hold on David’s life. When David meets Anna again, he realizes he has a chance to save her from Mr. Green’s schemes, even if it means putting David in danger of Lord Murphy’s wrath and revealing David’s deepest secrets.

In a moment of desperation, David and Anna agree to a proposal of convenience to provide the safety they both need. But as their attraction ignites, the looming dangers from Lord Murphy and Mr. Green threaten to destroy their budding happiness.

If you’re looking for a hero who’s been in love with the heroine since he knew what love was, if you want yearning so acute it will give you heartache, look no further.

David and Anna used to be friends when they were teenagers but lost touch for eight years. David never forgot her, and now that she’s back, he’s willing to do anything for her.

I adored this book from the very first page. David and Anna were both so lovable it radiated from the pages. The story wasn’t without pain; David’s childhood trauma was woven deeply into it. Anna’s gentle, respectful, and loving approach was wonderfully portrayed. I loved how her strength and vulnerability helped David understand that his past didn’t have to determine his future. Combined with David’s charm and unwavering devotion to her, it made for an absolutely stunning love story.

Five stars, and I hope Garrett and Julia are getting their books too.

TW: animal cruelty and child cruelty (in the past, not on page).

Thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for the arc, all opinions are my own.

What a terrific story. I loved the "meet cute" (although I suppose "re-meet cute" might be a more accurate term). David's adorable teasing of Anna drew me right in. (Part of me wishes that this story were duel POV so we could have seen David's thoughts more...but I also don't know that there's any scene I don't want from Anna's POV, so I'm glad there are glimpses of David through the journal entries interspersed throughout the book).
As the book progressed and it became obvious that he was bearing heavy burdens, I love that he was still kind to everyone, Anna especially. I also really loved how he was willing to sacrifice for Anna and that Anna in turn was willing to fight for him.

I hope this ends up being the first in a trilogy because I really want to see books with David's two siblings as protagonists!

Definitely add this to your to-read list!
5 stars.

I read a complimentary copy of this book (for quick editing purposes) and subsequently volunteered to write a review because I enjoyed the book so much.

Books where the MMC is named David >>> All jokes aside, this book had me staying up past my bedtime crying as I read. 5 stars all around 🫶🏼 A marriage of convenience, a golden retriever MMC with a heartbreaking past, and a friends-to-lovers romance. Perfection.

This is officially being added to my list of favorite proper romances. I loved this story and will immediately be putting all of Esther Hatch’s books on my TBR. I could not put it down! The romance had me kicking my feet, and the relationship development was incredibly sweet.

🌶️ Closed-door romance! I’m a sucker for a clean proper romance. There’s something so thrilling about them!

My only complaint is that I wish it were longer so I could spend more time with these wonderful characters ☺️ I would absolutely read a sequel about what happens next in Anna and David’s story, and especially one for Garrett and Julia! I was getting flirty vibes between Julia and the tutor and kept hoping we’d see something happen with that 😉 Plus I need to know that Garrett is happy!

Huge thank you to Esther Hatch, Shadow Mountain Publishing, and NetGalley for the eARC of this book! I’m hoping to read many more wonderful proper romances like this one 🤍

P.S. BYU alum girlies, this one’s for us 💙 (the author is a coug too!!) 🐾

This was an amazing story of love and healing. Our heroine is at a crossroads in her life as she tries to find a situation for both her and her mother that doesn't involve marrying an odious man just to keep a roof over their heads. They've come back to Breckenridge, a town that once held happy memories, hoping to find a place to live or work until Anna is old enough to claim her inheritance. The shy boy who she'd spent a wonderful summer with years ago is still there, but has now become a handsome man. They begin to renew their acquaintance and Anna is once more captivated by his eyes and humor. But David is hiding a secret that could prevent him from being able to ever do anything about the growing feelings between them. The author skillfully weaves a story of love between two people who are each carrying the effects of trauma and emotional wounds, but there is always that thread of hope that love can heal and is worth the risk. The yearning between these two was really well done and the kisses absolutely swoon-worthy! This one is definitely going on my keeper shelf!

Do not miss out on this lovely read! This is a beautiful story brimming with deep emotions, secrets, and a tenderhearted romance that will capture your heart from start to finish. Crafted with care, it takes you on a heartfelt journey of resilience, love, and courage. The witty banter, budding romance, and fun moments kept me hooked. I adored Anna and David; their charming and hilarious friendship has swoon-worthy moments. I especially loved the charming meet-cute. The glimpses of David through journal entries sprinkled throughout add a delightful touch. It takes a serious turn at times, tugging at your heart. The writing is superb, the characters intriguing. I hope this is the first book in a series, with Julia and Garrett getting their own stories. Overall, a must-read.

I received a complimentary e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

Wow, this one really took me by surprise in the best way! I went in thinking this was going to be just another cute historical romance and it was—for the first half of the book—and then it got super emotional and deep. My heart was just aching at what unfolded.

First of all, this book is just one big yearnfest. So much yearning between both Anna and David. I love how they reconnected and it was like no time had passed at all. The chemistry was just right, and there was also this underlying tension that made me just want to scream. Because it’s so obvious that while Anna gets to the point where she’s all in with David, he is holding something back. And y’all, my heart was not at all prepared.

Learning about David’s childhood broke my heart. The way Anna handled him with such care and understanding was just right. I love how their communication opened up the world for them. The romance stays closed door, but the emotional and sensual tension is so well written that it still feels incredibly intimate. I absolutely ATE IT UP!

Romance: closed door

Drop everything you are doing and grab a copy of this one!!! Seriously, clear your schedule and dive into this beautiful story! My heart is soaring from it! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!!!! This is definitely one of my unputdownable reads that I have been anticipating since the author announced about it! Allllll the heart eyes!!!! Allllll the stars!!! Seriously one of my favorite reads of the year and going on my favorites shelf!!!

Anna and David will have you smiling and laughing! Especially that first meeting. Then, all of his journal entries about her... Oh My Heart!!! Talk about major swoon and cheering them on through the struggles that are standing in their way.

I want to listen to the audiobook of this one when it releases to be immersed in the story again! If you are a fan of Regency books, this is one that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you put on your list...at the TOP of your list!!! Trust me!!! You might have a book hangover after it too, just a heads up!

And if you collect book boyfriends, David will be claiming that title!

Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses and nothing further.

I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Anna and her mother have few options after her father dies. While trying to escape an unwanted betrothal to a cruel man, Anna convinces her mother to return to the town where they spent a happy summer. There she finds David, the not so little anymore boy she befriended that summer. This book is so good! I knew how I wanted it to end, but I wasn’t sure if they could make it happen, and I love stories like that! I hope Esther will write books about David’s siblings as well!

This is the most tender love story! It really tugs at your heart strings. Both David and Anna are such wonderful characters. You will fall in love with them like I did. To see the way they treated each other and cared about others was beautiful to see.

I’ve always loved the humor and wit in Esther Hatch’s books. This one has it too. The re-meet cute was so great! You will quickly be drawn into their world as you find out more about them little by little.

This book has a more serious tone than most of Esther’s books, but it delivers a beautiful message of hope amid trials and the healing power of love.

A sweet and gripping tale of childhood friends (and not-quite sweethearts) all grown up and reacquainted, but with painful secrets obscuring their path forward. This was a bit angsty for me, with a truly abhorrent father figure looming in the background that added a lot of tension and distress, but it was definitely a page-turner with main characters that became ever more easy to sympathize with the longer you spent time with them as a reader.

Esther Hatch, you are a treasure. This book is so wonderful, and I don't know how I can possibly do it justice in a review, especially without spoilers. But I will try!

After the death of her father, Anna Atwood and her mother struggle to survive and are soon to be left with nowhere to go. In a desperate attempt to find somewhere to live for the next 18 months while they wait for Anna to be able to receive her inheritence, and to escape a despicable suitor, Anna and her mother travel to Breckenridge, a town they visited one summer 8 years ago. It is in Breckenridge that Anna is reunited with David, the young boy she befriended all those years ago. But David is not the shy, sickly, nearly silent shadow she remembers - he is all grown up and is now a confident, handsome man.

The opening scene, and the opening line, are just the way I want to start a book! I was invested in this story immediately, and hated every moment I had to put it down. Despite the dire straits Anna and her mother are in, the rekindling of friendship between Anna and David is so charming and funny. And the swoon! *Happy Sigh*

But make no mistake, this novel is no fluff piece. It takes a turn into some very serious issues, and at times I felt like my heart had been wrung out like a dishrag! The writing is excellent, the characters are intriguing, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment reading this book. (Although Lord Muphy is so incredibly cruel and vile that it's hard to say I "enjoyed" those scenes.) I loved how snippets of David's journal are included at the beginning of each chapter. And oh, boy, that very first one sure hits differently after you find out about his secret. 💔😭

I suspect this is the first of a series, and that Julia and Garrett will be getting their own stories. I will be extremely disappointed if they don't!!

I am OBSESSED!!!!! 🤩 😍 This was the best start to a book I have read in a long time!!! “Are you real?” Oh, I just can’t get over it. I friggin love David. LOVE HIM!!

This book is the perfect balance of all the things I need and love in a book - humor, tension, swoon, heartbreak. I cried two times in this book - and that’s a big deal for me. There is SO much packed into the pages of this book. I just don’t even know if I have all the words because it was incredible. I keep telling my husband how much I loved it, and I don’t know if he’s sick of it yet 😂😂 I was so giddy and happy for so much of the book, David was so sweet and romantic, and loved Anna so much. I want to reread it again already!! 🥹❤️

Also, this is a Single POV but the little quotes at the beginning of the chapter from him were like little drops of sunshine, and I LOVED them!!!!!

Thank you so much to Esther and Shadow Mountain for an advance copy. All gushing is given freely.

♾️⭐

Did I just read my new favorite regency romance!!!!?

The amount of butterflies I experienced while reading this book is unmatched

This is truly a masterpiece! There is the sweetest second chance romance, hands down the most perfect MMC I've ever read, tragedy, darkness, and a love that overcomes it all.

The yearing in this book is torture, and I loved every single second.

We follow Anna who is scrambling to find a solution to her and her mother's predicament. They seek out help of her late father's friends, but it has a time limit. She needs to either marry or wait until she turns twenty seven to receive her inheritance.

David is a man who knew Anna for a summer when she came to visit and who left a deep imprint on him. He has secrets and past hurts, but he is kind and wants to help Anna.

I think I was swept away by the yearning. This story isn't straight forward there are deep hurts and scars that are carried by many of the characters. The resilience and the desire to find and maintain happiness was so inspiring. I truly haven't been moved to tears by a story in a while and this one moved me. The characters were so brave and I just enjoyed this book immensely.

Favorite quotes: (basically the whole book)
An old, blind man would have been the perfect person to catch me. But no, I was graced with a man, perhaps twenty, who would cause a stir if he entered a ballroom.

“Matters of the heart are not bound by the years we’ve lived on the earth. As you must know, seeing as you’ve pursued a woman half your age.”

“Your daughter was a ray of light in an otherwise very dark childhood.”

“I couldn’t allow that light to leave without at least asking for her to become a permanent part of my future.

“I’ve never met anyone more alive than you. Do not underestimate how much your brilliant light affected me back then. I want that back in my life, not just for me but for Julia as well.”

“I am relieved to hear that. All of it. You, on the other hand, haven’t changed at all. I should have known that when I finally saw you again, it would be in that tree, looking more beautiful and as wild as you ever were at seventeen.”

“I think,” he said, “you underestimate how little it would take to convince everyone of my strong feelings.

“Let me be the one to do something for your sake this time. Give me a chance to return a small portion of what you gave me. I promise it won’t be unfair to me.”

“That door is going to open, and I’m going to start on your list of what an engagement should look like. Trust me, it is going to be very easy to make our friends and family believe I want to marry you.”

Blast. Why did the sunlight have to shine through the doorway, lighting him up from behind as though he were some young lord dashing in to save a damsel in distress? Moonlight and sunlight— they were going to be the death of me.

“You are the last person who should feel the need to say that to me. From the first moment we met, you helped me.”

“But some things are probably worth hurting for.”

“The point is, I wouldn’t be sad for the climb, even if I fell. Even if I were in pain for days afterward.”

“There is something satisfying about watching men perform physical labor, isn’t there?”

How would I go back to living my life on solid ground after he’d made me feel the heat of the sun and the wind on my face that only came from climbing to the treetops?

I forced my grip on his lapel to relax, took a slow, steadying breath, and drew a picture in my mind of what the two of us must look like. I traced the lines of us tucked together in a darkened corridor, his hands on my face, and my lips brushing over his, marking the parts of my gown that pressed against him, putting to memory this stolen moment. I folded the picture and tucked it safely into my soul, a memory to unwrap whenever I wished. Then I pulled away.

“I convinced everyone the moment they walked into the drawing room and found you in my arms. That list has never been about anyone else but us, and I want to finish it.”

No one but David would ever be enough.

“You taught me what happiness was, Anna. Anytime I’m happy, it makes me thankful for you.”

“Blue has always brought out the fire in those stormy walnut eyes of yours.”

“If I mentioned the way your eyes like to devour him while he is working during dinner tonight, I wonder what David would say.”

“I think you know you’re doing it right, David. Carry on. Your wife is enjoying the exhibition.”

“My marriage with Anna has only given me joy and has cost me nothing. Thus far, it has been the happiest time of my life.”

“I was very selfish at fourteen. I found you, and I wanted to keep you. You were the buried treasure I happened upon in the sand, and I wasn’t about to share you with the world.”

“I don’t want to live my life without you. Not if you love me.

You are everything I’ve ever wanted and the one thing I can never have.”

“We don’t have to see our future to believe in it. That is exactly what hope is— not knowing but believing anyway.”

“Our happiness will forever be entwined. In gaining your own happiness, you would also be granting mine.”

“You brought light into my life because you were braver than anyone I’d ever met. You left songs in your wake, even though everyone who heard them knew you couldn’t sing.”

You taught me to live when all I’d been doing up until that point was hiding.

No one has ever touched my heart like you did then, and no one has ever come close to owning it like you do now. If you’ll have me, Anna, I will always be yours.”

I was lucky enough to have an early copy of If You’ll Have Me.
I’ve read all of Esther Hatches books and she always entertains me. I love her humor in her books.
Although this book has some sweet banter, the premise is much more serious than I’m used to from one of Esters books. But, the depth and emotional resilience, not to mention the connection between David and Anna, make this one of my favorite books written by her!
“If you’ll have me” has a classic feel. Carefully addressing difficult topics all while weaving a beautiful love story is perfection!
Mark your calendars for February because you’ll want this book as soon as it is released.

Esther Hatch is an auto-read author for me. I have loved every book I've read by her. And this one was no different.

Anna and her mother are in trouble. Her father passed and her relations have decided that they will no longer support Anna and her mother. But they just need a little over a year for Anna to be able to access her inheritance. Anna convinces her mother to return to Breckenridge where they spent one summer when Anna was seventeen. Some friends they made have a cottage that Anna and her mother can stay at, but only for two weeks because they have already rented it. Anna's only other option is to marry a man who is twice her age and as sleazy as they come.

However, their first day back, Anna runs into David who used to follow Anna around that summer. David is three years younger than Anna which isn't typical in historical fiction. David kept his family a secret from Anna back then. His father is Lord Murphy and is quite abusive. As adults, David and his sister Julia are mostly left alone at the family's country estate due to the sacrifice of their older brother, Griffin. David has been in love with Anna since he was fourteen. He had no idea if he would ever see her again though.

When the awful man pursuing Anna's hand shows up to a dinner, David takes matters into his own hands and declares that Anna can't marry Mr. Green because she is engaged to him. The two intend to call off their engagement in time because David has no plans to ever marry. This was a little confusing to me. He was obviously enamored with Anna from the start. So why go through so much trouble to "enjoy their engagement" when that would only leave him with the inevitable broken heart in the end. Yet I suppose he was just so thankful to get to have these moments with Anna that he never dreamed he would actually get.

The aspects involving Lord Murphy felt alittle unrealistic. A little too dramatic. But real life can definitely be stranger than fiction. And I appreciated this book touching on the idea of a member of the peerage being abusive. Obviously, that part could have been real.

Anna and David were such a great couple. And my heart broke for David and his siblings. I am interested to see if Esther Hatch will pursue stories for the side characters, Julia especially, but Griffin also.

Favorite quotes:
-"You see, if I were to fall from this branch right now—” I grabbed her arm. “Please don’t. David would be extremely disappointed in me if I allowed that.” “But if it were to happen—” I tightened my hold. “It won’t.” She narrowed one eye at me as if she simply wanted to finish her sentence. “The point is, I wouldn’t be sad for the climb, even if I fell. Even if I were in pain for days afterward.” ... “Here’s to the climb, then.”

-I’d thought losing my father had been excruciating, but having a father like mine— even if I’d had to lose him— had made my life a paradise compared to David’s.

If You'll Have Me is a semi-marriage of convenience--which is one of my favorite tropes. I rooted for Anna and David. I really liked that Anna was the one to be vulnerable first. As someone who was terrified of that in my life, I can respect it in others. If You'll Have Me gets 4 Stars. Have you read If You'll Have Me? What did you think? Let me know!

This story had me holding my breath from the first pages all the way until the end! With an opening chapter that sucked me right in with its sweet peculiarity and every subsequent chapter slowly revealing hidden secrets and unrequited love.

Anna has returned to the small village she spent one summer in many years ago, as she's trying to find a future for herself and her mother. She's fallen on very difficult times and is trying to find employment and housing until she can collect her inheritance.

David lives in the same village and when they met during that one summer, he had proposed to her even though he was too young to be able to do anything about it. But their connection has carried through the years and now that Anna is back, they're drawn to one another again.

I love the moment they find one another in the opening chapter. It's sweet, it's sweetly peculiar with their teasing of one another and awkward in the moments leading up to how Anna will get herself out of her favorite tree. Yes, you'll have to read to find that out!

David couldn't be happier that she has returned and he's determined to do whatever he can to help her. A fake engagement, a fake marriage and so many secrets that Anna is trying to uncover about this boy who has become such a handsome man. But David holds a lot of information back. I knew there was something bad underneath the surface, you can feel it throughout every restrained emotion from David.

These two are powerfully emotional in the development of their love for one another, but they both hesitate to be loved. They both struggle with believing they are worthy of love and they have to fight to have what they desire. It's not an easy road and it's fraught with many obstacles.

This is why I held my breath through the entire book. Those secrets are slowly revealed and it's heartbreaking. But love always triumphs and the end of this one made my heart so happy for them.

Content: no language, kissing only, some violence (mostly off-page, nothing descriptive/gory; physical abuse mentioned, scars seen and discussed)

Genre/tropes: historical romance (Victorian, 1850s), fake engagement/marriage of convenience, he falls first, age gap

My thoughts: I will say, normally I love Esther Hatch books, I’ve reread many of them and a couple are particular favorites of mine (looking at you Lord Bryant), but this one just didn’t land for me. I can’t quite put a finger on it. Parts felt repetitive (both action/plot wise and character arc/reflective thoughts), and honestly I grew bored of Lord Murphy as the (mostly) unseen villain, despite how truly evil he is, and the horrors he put his children through, David especially.

For the age gap—she is two years older than he is, which I feel like is next to nothing, especially for that long ago. (But normally the age gap went in the other direction.) It felt like the pov character, Anna, could not stop thinking about it. As a reader it felt overdone to me. I kept thinking “yes, I get it, let’s please move on.”

While the romantic scenes weren’t my top tier (again, Lord Bryant 😍) I thought they were well done, and I was rooting for them. And just when I thought they were going to work things out, David threw another wrench into the works. I think the scene of the almost kiss (during the musical performance night) might be my favorite. I also really loved the sibling interactions and connections, especially how much they care for and work to protect the others (whether for good or ill themselves).

And the scene at the beginning where Anna is in the tree and David comes up? So good.

Despite this one not being my favorite, I am looking forward to other books in this series, especially for David’s brother, Garrett, who I really hope gets a book. (Provided the current Lord Murphy isn’t around for long in that one 😅)

“Sometimes in life, you need one person who sees you better than you see yourself. One person to hold you up. One person to love you. One fervent light in an otherwise dark world by which you can find your way.”

Wowza. This one will get you right in the feels! If you want a super fluffy, lighthearted novel where everything is sunshine and roses, this is not the book for you. But if you are wanting something deep and raw, heart wrenching and achingly beautiful, then definitely pick this one up! At first you think David is the one saving Anna, but by the end of the book you realize they both saved each other. Like a true partnership, each gives and takes and helps each other through the worst.

Not gonna lie, I was getting a little frustrated with David at the onset of their relationship (hello single point of view) but you’ll definitely want to stick with it. The intrigue on why David insists things be the way they are is what kept driving me to turn the pages. I needed to know! And as a word of warning, you should probably have some tissues ready. David’s life will break your heart. I would’ve done exactly what Anna did.

When they say reading gives you more empathy, and your body feels the feelings the characters do, this is the book they were talking about! Be kind to everyone. You never know who is going to need the sunshine of your smile, so give it out to everyone!

3.5 stars ✨

I’ve read three books by Esther and this was my fourth! Her writing and characters are always captivating. This book definitely felt darker with its undertones and the looming threat of Lord Murphy. And when we finally meet the man, yikes.

I appreciated how the story unfolded and the closure the characters received at the end. Though parts of me feel unsettled since the villain is still at large.

I’m curious what future installments of this series will look like.

As for characters, I love Julia and Garrett, and I found myself rooting for David and Anna the more I got to know them. This story was a beautiful depiction of what selfless love looks like.

Well done, Esther!

I've read all of Esther Hatch's previous books and really enjoyed them. If You'll Have Me, had a darker tragic tone that I wasn't expecting. Two lives each with with hard things to deal with death, poverty, neglect and abuse. I almost stopped reading at one point but plowed my way through.

I have loved all of the books that I've read by Esther Hatch, and this one is no exception. It was so good! I love getting snippets of their relationship when they were younger, having the fake relationship as they get reaquainted, and also getting the marriage of convenience that turns into more! It was simply the best.

I love how well suited Anna and David are for each other. They both are able to help the other with things in their life, and from those things their love for the other shines through.

This story is told from Anna's point of view. But if you are like me and enjoy a dual point of view, don't worry, you get snippets of David's point of view from his journal at the beginning of each chapter - and I absolutely loved that part!

I'm not sure if this book is the beginning of a series, but I sure hope so. I would love to see the siblings, Julia and Garrett both get their happily ever afters.

Thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this book a lot! David and Anna's story was a beautiful read.

I'll admit that it took me a bit longer to become truly engrossed in the story...I almost feel like the beginning of the story was a different tone from how it ended. But halfway through I finally got really into it and enjoyed it until the end.

The book starts off one way with a light-hearted tone. Anna and David were friends in their childhood and meet again as adults. It is clear that David is in love with Anna still, though Anna is quite oblivious. We see a beautiful arc of Anna falling in love with David, though there are unexpected challenges (of course) that attempt to hinder their love.

Anna grew on me as a character. Initially she seems a little annoying but she grows as a character and by the end I was rooting for her and David. The entire end felt very different from the beginning, and I was surprised by the heavier tone of it, but I like how the author was able to include it without it being too heavy or dark. By the end of the book, I was flipping the pages quickly to see how it would all be resolved, and I think all things considered the author did a great job.

I would definitely love to read a book about David's 2 siblings! Especially Garrett!!

One note I have that took a little bit away from this book was there is an age gap between Anna and David, with Anna being a few years older. I don't mind this, but, it was brought up several times by Anna and I don't think it needed to be talked about that much.

I was rooting for these two by page 8, which is about the moment I realized this “proper” Regency romance was about to be anything but emotionally safe.

In If You’ll Have Me by Esther Hatch, the story opens sweetly… then proceeds to dismantle your feelings with yearning, quiet sacrifice, & a proposal that was supposed to fix everything (spoiler: it absolutely does not). It’s the kind of romance that pretends to be calm while absolutely spiraling inside—restraint everywhere, longing everywhere, & people being noble when they should really just be honest. But where’s the fun in that?

➡️ Swipe for synopsis, content disclosure, #bookquote, & more.

WHAT I LOVED
💌 Friends-to-more with years of unresolved feelings — zero chill, maximum restraint
📓 Journal entries that quietly, emotionally vandalize you
🐾 A golden-retriever hero who protects everyone except himself (sir, please rest 🤭)
🥰 A re-meet cute that actually matters & isn’t just there for vibes
🏡 Found family, sibling loyalty, & healing that takes its time

TOP MOMENTS TO LOOK FOR (without spoilers)
😱 The reunion that instantly raises your blood pressure
🎶 A musical evening with enough tension to power the town
🌿 When “I’ll keep you safe” becomes “oh no, I care”
🔥 Secrets that finally stop whispering
💍 The moment pretending stops pretending

FINAL THOUGHTS
💭 This is a clean romance with emotionally messy consequences. Tender, frustrating, hopeful, & quietly devastating in the best way. It’s about choosing freedom, choosing love, & learning that martyrdom is not the same thing as nobility. I finished this wanting more pages… & fully prepared to read future books for the siblings.

👉🏻 Read this if you love Regency romance with fake engagements, he-falls-first devotion, & restraint that looks polite but is absolutely not emotionally safe.

❓Do you love the fake engagement trope? Do you have a favorite?

I received an advanced readers copy from NetGalley & Shadow Mountain. A positive review was not required. All thoughts are my own.

Wow, what an incredible story! This is my first book that I've read by Esther and it will certainly not be my last. This book had it all: secret pining, fake engagement, real swoony kisses,a horrid villain. and so much more. I adored David and Anna's story!

Childhood friends. Seemingly unrequited love. SLOW burn. Fake Engagement. Marriage of Convenience. Dark secrets. Potential financial ruin. True love. Found family.

I loved the setup for this story. Learning David and Anna's backstory was so sweet. Learning how Anna's friendship saved David was so lovely. We get more details from David's extremely difficult childhood throughout the book. And Anna's friendship is such a beautiful strength to him amidst such dark times. I love that he loves her for years! I love that he proposes when they are young and never changes his mind. Seeing Anna come to understand what David's friendship meant to her is also beautiful. They give each other strength, love, and true belonging when they need it most.

Getting to know Anna and David was a joy and a privilege. They have both experienced truly horrible things outside of their control. David experiences abuse at the hands of his father and Anna loses her father and must rebuff the attentions of a slimy suitor. These difficult experiences affect them but they don't ultimately define them. David manages to be a true gentleman and one of the kindest characters I've ever encountered. I loved how Anna brought joy to everyone around her. Her friendship with David's sister is lovely and her beautiful healing love for David was incredible.

Anna and David's romance is slow burn, marriage of convenience perfection. There is so much to love in their love story: childhood crush, fake engagement, real feelings, marriage of convenience, and the slowest of slow burns. Will they find their happily ever after? You really don't know until the very end! With all the twists, I adored their love story. Their love is so beautiful, so healing, and so worth fighting for. I loved when they finally put aside all their fears and secrets allowing their love to truly save them.

I'd like to officially put my name in the Esther Hatch fan club because I am hooked on her stories after experiencing this one! Highly recommend!

“No one has ever touched my heart like you did then, and no one has ever come close to owning it like you do now. If you’ll have me, Anna, I will always be yours.”

This friends to more story was so delightful! I loved the fun meet cute (or maybe I should say re-meet cute). This story was an emotional one, it broke my heart and put it back together again. It’s filled with light, scars, yearning, secrets, romace, and friendship.

Anna is gentle, caring, and determined. I loved her strength in her difficult situation. I loved her gentleness with her mother and her tender care and friendship with Julia. I loved that she strove to be a light and encouragement to David. I was so happy when she decided to fight for what she wanted. David is devoted, honorable, charming, and scarred. I enjoyed the small glimpses of David’s thoughts both past and present. I loved his willingness to help Anna no matter the “cost” to himself. I loved his relationships with Julia and Garrett. David’s love and devotion to Anna fought hard against his scars from his past. I absolutely loved when he would let down his guard and let Anna in. And when he finally revealed his secrets I was a puddle. I loved their witty banter and flirting. And the epilogue was so satisfying.

A few more quotes:
How had I managed to spend twenty-five years of my life not kissing David? And how was I supposed to spend the rest of it the same way?

“My marriage with Anna has only given me joy and has cost me nothing. Thus far, it has been the happiest time of my life.”

“I don’t want to live my life without you. Not if you love me. Each day we spend in each other’s company, I’m more and more convinced you do. I’m fine living in hiding from him if that is the only path you will accept. I’m not afraid of being poor. I’m only afraid of losing you.”

Note: there is mention of past physical abuse of a child.

When Miss Anna Atwood, now 25, lived in Breckenridge when she was 17, she had a wonderful time visiting with people in the area. At the time, there was a young man, David Tate, 14, who spent time with her as she made calls on people. She remembers that he said then that he wanted to marry her.

Now, 7 years later, Anna and her widowed mother are back in the area hoping to find a place to live for 2 years until she comes into the inheritance her father left her. While it doesn’t appear that anyone can take them in permanently, Anna is hoping to find a position as a governess to make enough money until that time. Anna is also trying to avoid an older, odious man, Mr. Green, who wants to marry her but whom she cannot abide.

One day, she runs into a handsome man who recognizes her so she is stunned to find that he is David Tate, 23, and all grown up. They meet for a couple of walks and she finds him quite charming. At a dinner party, Mr. Green shows up and tries to push his way to be with Anna. But David steps in and says they have been promised to one another for 7 years and are engaged. Everyone is shocked but David later says to Anna that they can have a pretend engagement and when she finds employment, they can quietly break off the engagement. When she learns that he is the second son of Viscount Murphy, a truly odious man, she is shocked. However, David and his sister live in the family home but he has not seen or spoken to his father in years.

This book builds beautifully showing how strong both David and Anna are. As much as David wants to be with Anna, he doesn’t want her to ever be treated badly by his evil father so he wants to send her away so she will be safe from him. The horrible things that Lord Murphy did to David are revealed late in the story and it is quite shocking. But I so cared for Anna and David and wanted only the best for them. Do read this powerful story and learn what true love can look like. Enjoy!

I wish I loved this. I’ve enjoyed other books by the author but I had some issues with this one.

First, I loved the premise that they met as teenagers. He had a horrible homelife and she brought joy and hope into this life. They meet about 10 years later and he is just as entranced as he was a teen. I liked the villainous suiter who tries to get revenge when he is rejected. I like the growth of the hero’s sister as she gains courage and confidence.

- I didn’t like the emphasis on the age difference. She is three years older than him, horrors! Ten years I might buy, but not three.

- Two of the three adult children are terrified of their abusive father. I totally get not wanting to have anything to do with a terrible parent, and in their case they don’t have any choice if they want income and a place to live, but it still bothered me that they are literally living their lives in total fear of their father.

- (Spoiler) David has cigarette burns all over his body, and it takes forever for Anna to realize what they are. Too long. I know she is a sheltered young lady, but still.

- It opens with Anna stuck up a tree, so overdone in historical romance.

- I didn’t like Anna’s chapters being in first person and David’s in third. I would have preferred the whole book to be from Anna’s viewpoint or for David’s to be in first person as well.

- I often enjoy the engagement/marriage of convenience trope, but I found the one between Anna and David frustrating. David is a little too much the martyr.

- Making out when you are literally in fear for your life and trying to keep silent so you are not discovered is hard to believe.

- If we are to believe the rest of the story, I don’t believe that what happens at the end between the abusive father and Julia will solve anything.

I will read Esther Hatch again, although this book was a disappointment for me. I read an advance reader copy of If You’ll Have Me from Edelweiss.

Absolutely spellbinding!!

Anna returns to the town where she spent an idyllic summer as a youth, eager to escape the unwanted attentions of a persistent suitor. There she runs into David, a friend from that summer who comes to her rescue when she is in dire circumstances.

David has never forgotten that summer with Anna and the joy she brought into his life. He wishes for nothing more than a lifetime of happiness with her but knows such a thing is impossible, at least as long as she is in his life. He is determined to set her free, even if it costs him everything.

What you'll love:
Victorian era
childhood friends
single pov
reverse age gap
fake betrothal
his journal entries

I am leaving out SO many things I want to put on that list but I don't want to spoil anything and this book is more than just a story, it is an experience! It is a beautiful roller coaster of love and romance and heartache and all the hard things. So many emotions and all the feels! This story broke my heart and then slowly pieced it back together bit by bit until the practically perfect ending.

David's past and his secrets make him a compelling hero and an endearing character, and the little glimpses of his voice we get through the short quotes from his journal are like a window to his soul. He and Anna are so perfect together in the way they help each other find joy and embrace life despite their immense challenges. Their love story is one of connection and vulnerability and trust, and this book is full of so much heart and depth right along with the swoony romance that I have come to expect and love in this author's stories!

Come for the sweet Victorian love story, stay for the story about healing and hope, of family and friendship, of loss and love. This book will stay with me for a very long time and I can't wait to pick it back up and fall in love all over again.

Possibly the best thing about this book is how realistically the characters behave. What a breath of fresh air. And I love how forthright they can be, speaking plainly, even if it's with self-interest in mind.

And I loved that characters were layered. Anna's mother, for example, initially shows as a weak, selfish woman. And she is true to that facet of her character, in the way she pushes her daughter. But even she has growth through the course of the story, prompting a few moments and lines that made me want to stand up and clap.

There was so much humor, the barriers made sense, and the characters' inner thoughts were understandable. All the right ingredients for a great story. All was going swimmingly until about 80% of the way.

SPOILERS
I don't know how Anna didn't recognize burn marks for what they were. Seems like common sense, which made it feel like she was being dumbed down, and I HATE that. Also, honestly, I was frustrated by the amount of secrets still between them at this point in the story. Most of them should have been obvious to Anna, and it seemed like she was being kept in the dark and given a heavy dose of naivete in order to drag the plot out. I felt like it was clear how it would ultimately play out, but it was a slow and painful process with only drops of joy that didn't do nearly enough to counteract my frustration with her ignorance.

I wish my highlights and notes were connected through kindle so that I could give examples. But alas.

That said, I really enjoyed *most* of this book. It was the best Esther Hatch I've read in years (historically, she's been a favorite of mine, but I've had some major issues with her recent works) , which makes me really excited for future books.
