Through more than 200 extraordinary photographs, discover the beauty, fragility, and timeless wonder of Great Salt Lake as it teeters on the brink.
As Great Salt Lake began to recede at an alarming rate, photographer Chris Carlson felt compelled to document this extraordinary natural wonder before it changed forever. He dedicated nearly four years to capturing its beauty on its shores, in its waters, and from the air. The result is Preserving Greatness, a comprehensive collection of stunning photography that immortalizes the essence of the Western Hemisphere’s largest terminal saline lake.
Carlson’s perspective brings to life the dynamic interplay of light and shadow, the intricate details and textures of the lake, and the diverse wildlife that call this extraordinary place home. From the tranquil, reflective waters at dawn to the fiery hues of sunset, Carlson’s images invite us to explore the Great Salt Lake in all its grandeur.
Preserving Greatness also delves into the vibrant industry that has developed around the lake, from mineral extraction to brine shrimp harvesting, highlighting the need for a better balance between human activity and natural preservation.
These photographs, filled with both the beauty and fragility of Great Salt Lake, can inspire us to support efforts to protect this unparalleled natural wonder for future generations.
A beautiful book deserving of anyone's coffee table. One of those books where you can page through over and over again and daydream about wandering around on those landscapes. This is a picture book full of photographs of the geography around various parts of Utah with a few side notes laced along the way. Printed in a large and heavy format. The pages are thick, though the photographs are not glossy. More of a matte texture, but still of a higher quality. It has a really nice hardbound cover that's gorgeous in itself. My only issue with some of the photos is that the color balance is a little off on some of them. A bit too much blue, gray or violet in some... but I'm nitpicking. A lot of the photographs have an abstract appearance as though they are paintings from the Abstract Expressionist School of Art which I love. Even with some of the color balance being off, it's still a rather enjoyable book for those of us who love to get lost in books and photographs as a safe mechanism for getting away from your everyday life. Plenty to enjoy gazing upon over and over again.
This is a beautiful book! From cover to cover the pictures are works of art! The angles are incredible! I enjoy having it on my table for all to enjoy.
