enya du döffsch d review ned läse bis dus buech gläse hesch okeee thank yewwwwww :P
okay so.... i pretty much read this in one sitting and.... oh my god...
i would honestly like to give this one star, just on the principle that it almost killed me. i'm serious; i don't think i've ever laughed and cried at the same time before, especially in my break room at work... it was... an experience...
but, sadly, i can't give in one star. because this was, in my humblest of opinions, by far one of the best books in this series. the stakes??? the pacing???? the funny-but-still-serious-because-we're-in-the-apocalypse-writing??? the ILLUSTRATIONS???? all of it was absolutely top-notch. this book changed EVERYTHING in the series, and you can feel it in every page.
that said; if i ever have to go through something like THAT again, i might just fly to america and hunt down max brallier down myself. just saying.
The first of these came out in 2015. Do we realize we've been reading these books for 10 years now?
This one was better than the last one or two (it is getting hard to remember). There was the one with where they met Wracksaw and never did anything, I remember Quint and Dirk having an adventure and June going off on her own . . . but that is largely this entire book. I don't remember anyone except Quint and Jack. Even Goblet is a little fuzzy, and it seems like we've lost the thread of Rezzoch, Thrull, I don't know who the guys in the Hidden City were, couldn't remember where they found the Star-Zombie thing that basically solved most of their problems.
This thing has been going on for too long without any major advancement in the plot. Even this, while at least going back to the roots of Jack caring for his friends and us having a little fun, it largely a waste of time and doesn't get us anywhere. Now it seems like we need to go BACK to before the Rat General Monster was a thing and find a book we worked on in the . . . second book.
I don't remember, and this struggles because I need to remember some of this to be able to understand what is going on.
This is best when it is Jack and the gang Monster of The Week fighting. When we are focused on the problems of the here and now. When it gets caught up in a larger narrative that will never be solved, it is too big for its own good.
Better than the vote in the mall monster . . . but I miss the days of Nightmare King.
Read this for work and I understand it is not ideal to jump in to a series at book #10, but anyway. Based on the scores this has received, I am obviously an outlier, but I just didn't particulary enjoy this book. The fights/chases with the monsters weren't particularly engaging, they seemed to regularly come back from defeat/being evaded with little explanation as to how they managed it etc. The most interesting part of the story, when Jack meets an all-knowing entity, was built up well, but then fizzles.
I liked the one-sided conflict between Jack & Quint, which showed Jack's self-absorbed character.
The only other book I have read in this universe was the second graphic novel, which I quite liked, so I was surprised this was not my thing. This is obviously appealing to a crowd that already reads and enjoys super-hero graphic novels, and if they enjoy this story too, I am glad. Anything to keep kids reading!

I thought this was supposed to be the last book, but it ended on a cliffhanger. That's perfect though because my son has been really enjoying this series and it is very fun.
