ACHHHHH - jakie to mogło być dobre, gdyby do akcji nie wszedł ten odrealniony pierwiastek. Niezły kwas wyszedł, nie ma co.
Choć myślę, że dla kogoś z głową nie tak zamkniętą jak moja (od połowy powtarzałam już tylko klasyczne "ALE NIE ROZUMIEM"), może być to naprawdę dobra rozrywka.
Trochę szkoda, bo Kapturek był od zawsze moją ulubioną baśnią :(

J’ai beaucoup aimé ce roman policier qui flirte avec le surnaturel j’aime beaucoup les contes et le fait que les crimes soient inspirés de ces derniers et quelque chose qui m’a beaucoup attirée.
Katie a été enlevée par un mystérieux homme qui porte un masque de loup, il lui demande de réécrire les contes traditionnels mais pour commettre des meurtres. L’aspect original du roman m’a séduite c’est bien écrit, haletant bref tout ce que j’aime dans les romans policiers.
Les mots peuvent tuer est la phrase parfaite pour résumer ce livre.

The concept of this book sounded unique and was why I picked it up in first place. Initially, I enjoyed the story line as it was fast paced and mixed up different genres. But for me, the direction the plot took and the ending felt too complicated to follow along (gave me The Matrix vibes).

I absolutely loathed this book but didn’t want a DNF. I found it boring and lacking in any engaging plot. It felt like a book written for young children at points and with adult language and ideas intertwined. Not for me.

Little Red Death by A.K. Benedict pulled me in right from the sinister sounding prologue.
There is not much I can say about the plot without giving spoilers and this is one story you need to go into without any spoilers.
DI Lyla Rondell is investigating a series of murders that appear to be based on Grimms fairy tales. As the murders mount up the clues all lead back to the unsolved disappearance of Lyla's best friend 25 years ago.
I really don't like horror stories but I was so hooked on the mystery that when the gruesome murders started I couldn't stop reading.
I read The Complete Grimms Fairy Tales as a buddy read in 2023 and I remember how dark and gruesome they were. A. K. Benedict has used these pre-disneyfied fairy tales as the basis for the murders.

An extremely frustrating book. It was relatively gripping but I wanted to throw it out of a window several times.

I enjoy a fairytale retelling..... with a little horror and crime mystery at the core. This was a welcomed addition to my library
Katie (a crime writer) is locked in an attic in a house deep in the woods. Looking for escape she finds a letter which tells her she must write murder stories in the styles of fairy tales... which he will then make happen. If she doesnt, she will die.......
The first story based on cinderella, a young woman Grace is kidnapped and witnesses see her taken into the woods by a masked figure.....
Enter DI Lyla Rondell is assigned to the case of kidnapped Grace Montague. As the case evolves and new crimes are committed in the style of fairytales Lyla is forced to face her own demons..... when her best friend 25 years earlier was kidnapped also in the style of a Fairy Tale.
It becomes clear it wasnt by chance she is working on this case, the killer is playing with her.
I really enjoyed the fairytale element in this one, it was a fun read something a little different to my usual reads.

I don't understand what this book wanted to be. It wasn't a thriller. It wasn't fantasy. It wasn't mystery. It wasn't horror.

The "Grimm Ripper Murders" by the press, these crimes challenge Lyla to confront her own origins and the blurred lines between fiction and reality.
I enjoyed parts of this and took me while to get into it. It's definitely something different to your normal murder mystery.

So if you took a bit of All the genres and threw them into a blender this comes out. Seriously, my best guess would ultimately be Horror-Paranormal-Fantasy-Parody-Agenda genre. Normally would dnf this type of book after immediately realising it was not the expected genre nor, quite frankly, anything close.
I was grossed out many times, couldn't eat for hours and took a couple days break from it, but was Determined to read the whole thing through to be fair.
What eventually helped was reading it out loud to my hubby and doing the voices for all the different characters lol That's what brought the parody to light because when read out loud it's actually quite funny.
I cannot rate this higher due to the Vulgarity, Gore, etc that im not a fan of. I expected a Mystery/Thriller and got something beyond words.

Namens uitgeverij Luitingh Sijthoff mocht ik ‘Zo alleen, zo alleen’ – geschreven door A.K. Benedict – ontvangen als recensie-exemplaar, waarvoor nogmaals bedankt.
De flaptekst van het boek wist me eigenlijk direct al nieuwsgierig te maken. Menig kenner van de sprookjes van de gebroeders Grimm weet dat ze eigenlijk een stuk gruwelijker zijn dan de kindvriendelijke varianten. Ik was erg benieuwd hoe de auteur dit vorm ging geven in Zo alleen, zo alleen.
Het verhaal begint direct met een onheilspellende proloog, waardoor mijn nieuwsgierigheid naar het verloop van het verhaal nog meer aangewakkerd werd. Door de flaptekst en de proloog waren mijn verwachtingen ook direct redelijk hoog gespannen. Deels zijn deze verwachtingen ook zeker waar gemaakt, maar helaas deels ook niet.
Soms lees je een verhaal wat je eigenlijk heel goed wil vinden, maar wat je gewoon niet helemaal weet te pakken. Dat is iets wat ik bij dit verhaal heb ervaren. Het is wel op een intrigerende manier geschreven, maar het duurde voor mijn gevoel redelijk lang voordat ik een beetje mijn draai kon vinden in het verhaal. Wellicht kwam dit doordat ik toch een iets andere setting had verwacht, dan hoe het verhaal daadwerkelijk vormgegeven is. Ik had verwacht dat de sprookjes van Grimm meer naar voren zouden komen, met de daar bijhorende details. Dit viel mij persoonlijk een beetje tegen. Ik had het geheel wat spectaculairder verwacht. De sprookjes komen wel in het verhaal terug, maar dan in een vrij matige vorm.
Ook vond ik de continuïteit qua spanningsboog welke de auteur in het verhaal bracht niet stabiel. Tuurlijk hoeft een verhaal qua spanning niet altijd tot het plafond te gaan, maar ik kreeg een beetje het ‘alles of niets idee’ bij dit verhaal.
Qua verhaallijn is het verhaal opgedeeld in een drietal delen. Persoonlijk was het eerste deel wel echt mijn favoriet. Dit gedeelte wist mij ondanks wat opstartproblemen op redelijk wat vlakken te boeien. In dit gedeelte bleef de spanningsboog op een redelijk stabiel niveau.
Het verhaal is ook opgedeeld in verschillende POV’s. Ik vond dat hier een goede en vlotte afwisseling in zat. De personages waar vanuit je het verhaal leest, Lyla en Katie, zijn levendig en realistisch neergezet. De gebeurtenissen van de hoofdpersonages gaven een actie-reactie in de afwisseling. Hierdoor zat er een vlot leestempo aan het verhaal.
Het tweede deel was voor mij helaas wel een tegenvaller. Ik weet niet welke intentie de auteur had met dit gedeelte, maar het heeft mij niet weten te vinden.
De levendigheid van het eerste gedeelte zag ik hier helaas erg weinig terug. In dit gedeelte vond ik het op sommige momenten ook vrij lastig om mijn aandacht erbij te houden. Het werd in mijn ogen te onoverzichtelijk en onsamenhangend.
Het derde deel is de ontknoping van het verhaal. Mijn mening over het eerste en het tweede deel wordt hierin eigenlijk een beetje gecombineerd. Het einde was me enigszins wel duidelijk, en ook kwam de spanningsboog weer een beetje terug. Toch voelde het geheel niet helemaal goed afgerond en klopte het voor mij ook nog niet helemaal.

Katie budzi się zdezorientowana w nieznanym pokoju. Jej oprawca "Wilk" domaga się by pisała opowiadania inspirowane baśniami Braci Grimm, które on może przerodzić w prawdziwe morderstwo. Kobieta musi wybrać - jej życie albo cudze. Lyla została policjantką, w nadziei, że kiedyś odnajdzie zaginioną przyjaciółkę. Detektyw prowadzi sprawę mordercy zwanego Grimmem Rozpruwaczem, a śledztwo łączy się z zaginięciem Allison.
„Kapturek musi zginąć” to kryminał z wyraźnie baśniowym, mrocznym klimatem, który łączy elementy thrillera, noir i współczesnej opowieści detektywistycznej. Autorka stworzyła wciągającą fabułę gdzie łączy realizm z fantastyką doprawioną czarnym humorem. Stworzyła baśni w nowej mrocznej odsłonie. Narracja prowadzona jest z perspektywy porwanej i policjantki oraz listów Wilka. Śledztwo jest prowadzone skrupulatnie, pełno niewiadomych, rozpytań świadków, zainscenizowane miejsca zbrodni sugerujące, która z baśni była inspiracją oraz nieuchwytny morderca. Opisy są brutalne i krwawe, nie dla wrażliwych czytelników. Policjantka skupiona na śledztwie i jednocześnie mająca nadzieję, że po tylu latach w końcu dowie się, co stało się z jej zaginioną przyjaciółką. Fragmenty nowej odsłony baśni były niezwykle ciekawe, najbardziej właśnie na to czekałam oraz na finał sprawy, bo niestety kompletnie nie przewidziałam jak to się wszystko skończy. Momentami czułam chaos i nagromadzenie bohaterów, jednak wraz z lekturą było dużo lepiej. Zwroty akcji, które nie pozwalają na oderwanie się od tej nietuzinkowej historii.
Autorka stworzyła bez wątpienia oryginalną powieść, splatającą kilka gatunków oraz zapadającą w pamięć.

Well. I'm pretty sure I've read WORSE books. At least it was a quick read?
I went into this wanting the meta narrative that seems to have put some people off but it's just... cheap? And extremely boring. Hard shifting from an extremely dull paint-by-numbers crime novel into "aha! the detective is paper thin because she's being WRITTEN! and the author writing her? is also being written! and THAT author? Also being written! Aren't you shocked? Aren't you surprised?" does not a good story or interesting point make. And all of these writers and characters exist in the same world even though the last one is explicitly just doing it to become a bestseller. Why did you make your characters real what possible benefit could you get out of it

Little Red Death is a gripping, fast paced crime novel unlike anything I’ve read before. It’s going to be a difficult book to review as I don’t want to give anything away.
The story is told from two points of view, one following DI Lyla Rondell as she tries to solve the mystery of a serial killer who is murdering their victims in fairy tale themed murders and Katie a writer who the murderer has kidnapped to write the fairy tale murders he then carries out in real life. I quickly found myself drawn into the book and into the nightmare scenario the characters find themselves in. It soon becomes clear that the murder has a personal vendetta against DI Rondell as they continually taught her with notes and reminders of her missing childhood friend Alison. The story is a mainly a crime book but has elements of horror and folk tales cleverly woven into the narrative which I really loved as I’m always a fan of unusual crime books.
I thought the book was very fast paced and I found it very difficult to put down as I desperately wanted to find out what on earth was going on. The twist in the middle had me gasping out loud, much to the amusement of my children, and I soon found myself reading faster and faster as the different layers to the story are revealed. The ending was amazing, so well done and took me completely by surprise as I thought everything had already been solved. I finished the book three days ago and have continued to think about it since, often having to go back and re-read the last few chapters as I kept thinking of certain bits of the story.

Picked up at Waterstones. Looked good, sounded good. I started this one in march. Its taken me until june to get through it. It didn't suck me in and I didn't feel the urge to go back and finish it. It was just one that was there. Felt like a typical murder mystery after a while, with the detective being taunted, the writer being forced to plot out the murders and the killer acting them out. Then it got bizarre, the russian doll line was apt. Writers everywhere and Lyla being a character. It got confusing. The killer got lazy and the whole thing felt like a mess. I got through it but I regret buying it.

Conceptually, this book is everything you could ever want from a horror/paranormal/crime novel. The idea is solid - there are faerie tale crimes happening, and they are nasty, and they are escalating. I do feel like the plot as a whole lost where it was going though, unfortunately. It starts off strong, and it's really clear that the story was formulated around this. The twists and turns are complex, but to the point that the genre bending feels more like fatigue than anything else.
I think there's a really solid story and some really good characters in this book, they just need a little bit more teasing out and development to get where they need to be. I did enjoy some of the gore and the supernatural themes, but I think this book could use just a bit more of a straightforward path, both for the mystery and horror elements.

Ik las dit boek voor de LS thriller-leesclub op Facebook, bedankt @LSuitgeverij voor dit recensie exemplaar.
Het boek gaat over Lyla, een politierechercheur die onderzoek doet naar een reeks moorden gebaseerd op de sprookjes van de gebroeders Grimm.
Daarnaast is er Katie, die opgesloten zit in het bos in het huis van ‘de boze wolf’ (of toch van een man die zich als dusdanig voordoet).
Het eerste deel van het boek ontwikkelt zich als een standaard whodunit, met een aantal moorden en een rechercheur die onderzoek doet hiernaar. Dat Lyla, de rechercheur waarvan sprake, ook haar eigen demonen heeft waartegen ze vecht, past hier nog volledig bij.
In het tweede deel gaat Benedict echter volledig los met het onthullen van plottwists en dubbele persoonlijkheden. Ik moet toegeven dat ze mij hier even kwijt was… Ik hou van onverwachte plottwists in thrillers, maar hier viel er op elke pagina wel iets nieuws te beleven…
Ik las hier eerder een andere review, die sprak van ‘trying to do too much’ en ik moet mij hier jammer genoeg bij aansluiten.
Geen hoogvlieger voor mij dus, maar smaken verschillen dus hopelijk viel het boek bij anderen wel in de smaak.

The concept of this book is amazing and it is definitely unlike anything I have ever read. I found it so clever and thought provoking, especially around true crime and your first baby tooth (iykyk- no spoilers eek!). I love fairytales and folklore so I enjoyed that aspect of it the most. It is fast paced and I found myself needing to know what was happening next. I ended up reading this in under 24 hours which is just what you want in a thriller/horror book. I did find it a bit complicated towards the end and I really had to concentrate to keep up as lots of players appear and you need to keep track of who is who.

Verrassend boek met een spannend mysterie, meerdere zeer onverwachte plotwendingen en daarmee een nieuw perspectief. Altijd leuk hoe A.K. Benedict nog een recept toevoegt. Ik miste nog wel een soort uitleg naderhand want de auteur kennende zaten er de nodige anagrammen en puzzels in het verhaal...

This was an engaging read containing thriller, mystery and fairytale vibes and I’ve never read anything quite like it. The prologue hooked me in by breaking the fourth wall and addressing the reader and I was not expecting this one bit.
DI Lyla Rondell is on the case of a lifetime. Tasked with investigating a series of perplexing deaths, the only lead she has is that each appears to be based on a different classic fairy tale. Far from the stuff of bedtime stories, the press is having a field day with what they have named the Grimm Ripper Murders. But as the bodies stack up, Lyla’s whole world is about to flip on its head. Because the killer’s bloody trail stretches deep into her own origin story, and when she discovers the truth, nothing will ever be the same again.
I absolutely loved the retellings of the Grimm’s Fairytales with a modern twist and really enjoyed these sections. The first part of the book seeped with intrigue and I found it easy to turn the page.
Once part two came around, my mind was perplexed with an impressive and very unexpected twist. However, like with any fairy tale, you have to suspend belief. Whilst I enjoyed the twist, it was also confusing at times moving forward into the later parts and my enjoyment faded slightly.
Lyla was a unique character and her first chapter had me crying with laughter. I felt her character changed throughout the book though and overall, I was quite neutral in terms of liking her.
I thought this book was well-plotted and Benedict has a very distinctive craft at writing. I quite enjoyed the final pages and wonder if there’ll be a sequel!

Ik vind de originele sprookjes van de gebroeders Grimm erg boeiend dus toen ik las over Zo alleen, zo alleen, een thriller waarbij de moorden werden geïnspireerd door deze sprookjes was ik gelijk enthousiast.
Helaas maakte het juist mijn verwachtingen wat dat betreft niet helemaal waar. Want in Zo alleen, zo alleen wordt er een schrijver ontvoerd die gedwongen wordt om sprookjes te schrijven en dan gebruikt de moordenaar die als inspiratie voor zijn lust naar wraak. Dus was er weinig te lezen over de orginele gruwelijke sprookjes van Grimm en werden alleen de personages gebruikt.
Toen ik over mijn eerste teleurstelling heen was, was ik toch aangenaam verrast. Absoluut een unieke insteek met een onverwacht bijzondere plottwist, zo eentje waarbij het hele verhaal op zijn kop staat. Het verhaal wordt afgewisseld met de sprookjes die de schrijver heeft geschreven en die vond ik ook erg leuk gevonden.
De plottwist zelf was erg verrassend, die geeft het verhaal een vleugje fantasie. En ik ben zeker fan van boeken die twee genres combineren in één verhaal. Maar na die plottwist voelde het verhaal wel wat afgeraffeld.

Such a dark and interesting premise for a crime novel - I loved it but felt a little underwhelmed with the ending.
The first third of the book truly makes you believe that you're following a missing person's story with a serial killer murdering based on grim fairy tales keeping crime authors captive. I loved the meta twist which really made me think of the film "Cabin In The Woods". The description of the crime scenes and the depth to them reminded me of the Hannibal series and had me hooked - the subliminal messaging other than the classic fairytale.
The final reveal with the True Authors identity was one I definitely didn't suspect but I really didn't like the wrap up at the end - I felt like this was a cop out to give that "Happy Ever After" feel to it. I was hoping for the macabre and darkness to conclude nicely and could have been written in better rather than depicting Ally and Lyla's fairytale ending. Given the nature of the book, I guess it is somewhat fitting?
A couple of unexplained plot elements as well - what happened to the Irish lady who killed the Twins? Is she linked to all of this? Was she a character?
Devoured in 2 days and a constant pace throughout. I'd give this 3 stars - wanted it to be so much more than it was :(

Zo alleen, zo alleen is het thrillerdebuut van A.K. Benedict. Het plot van dit boek trok direct mijn aandacht, namelijk moorden gebaseerd op sprookjes. En ze leefden nog lang en gelukkig... of misschien ook niet? Ik kon niet wachten om in dit boek te duiken en was erg benieuwd naar wat dit debuut zou gaan brengen. A.K. Benedict neemt de lezer mee op een spannend avontuur dat naast psychologisch ook erg creatief is.

This book intrigued me from the moment I first saw it on the shelves with its mix of crime fiction and fairy tales and having spotted it cheap on kindle, I snapped it up.
it begins really promisingly as Katie, a kidnapped writer is forced to write about murders which her abduction re-enacts. Enter DI Lyla Rondell who is tasked with investigating these weird occurrences in the woods as they seem to be also linked to her past. I really enjoyed this part of the storyline, however, it then introduces a plot twist which could be seen as clever or inspired but unfortunately left me confused for most of the remainder of the book. Possibly it could be that i didn't fully understand what the author was trying to say and there will likely be other readers that fully buy into it. This was purely my personal thought. So ultimately it was a book with real promise which then didn't quite deliver for me, however I think this book will split reader's opinions down the middle.
