2021 52 Book Challenge - October Mini Challenge - 1) Sherlock Holmes Inspired

I really didn't get along with this book at all. I found it wacky and irrelevant and honestly, I just found it a little boring because of that. In general, I just wasn't a fan of the writing style.

The Game Is Afoot: A Shadow Holmes And Watson Mystery by David Raymond was just hands down amazing. The attention to detail is incredible, and the twists and turns are bound to throw you for several loops! I was absolutely spellbound by this authors work, and this was an incredible first impression! There are so many different references, subtleties, and addicting action that you won't be able to put this down. Downright adored this book, and I highly recommend it!

Elementary, my dear Watson!

I’ve always loved stories about Sherlock Holmes. To read a funny, whacky, irreverent story about Sherlock’s progeny is magic in itself. To have it narrated by a mind reading dog is icing on the cake. I sure hope that there’s a sequel to this wonderful book!

I really enjoyed this lighthearted twist on Sherlock Holmes. Shadow Holmes is the great-granddaughter of Sherlock’s older, and according to him smarter, brother Mycroft. Shadow is forbidden from pursuing her calling and so works for her father selling real estate in Miami. Shadow discovers that her father is the director of a clandestine British spy agency, The Bee when she is poisoned along with her parents by Professor Jane Moriarty. Shadow along with Watson the mind reading dog gets her chance at being a detective like her ancestors when she needs to solve the murders taking place at homes listed for sale with her father. Meanwhile, Moriarty has plans to destroy the world and create a new evil one and Watson has his own mystery to solve involving Tuesday Hudson, Sherlock’s granddaughter and Inspector Archie Lestrade of Scotland Yard. This is an original story with an intriguing storyline and quirky characters which kept me happily turning the pages. I love the fact that the main POV is Watson’s, the mind reading dog. An enjoyable and engaging story.

The Game Is Afoot by David Raymond is a wildly entertaining, offbeat mystery that breathes new life into the Holmes legacy with a modern, sun-soaked Miami twist. Shadow Holmes, the quick-witted great-granddaughter of Mycroft, finds herself thrust into a whirlwind of espionage, murder, and absurdity after a brush with the wicked Professor Jane Moriarty. With a hilarious cast—including a storytelling dog named Watson and a delightfully stoned Tuesday Hudson—Raymond expertly weaves humor, intrigue, and action into a story that’s as clever as it is outrageous. Bursting with energy and packed with playful nods to classic detective tales, The Game Is Afoot delivers a madcap adventure perfect for fans of Sherlock Holmes, Monty Python, and a good dose of Florida-fueled chaos. This was definitely a feel-good read and kept me intrigued the full way through.

I have only ever seen the movies and television series so I am sure I have missed out! Shadow Holmes, the great granddaughter of Sherlock's brother Mycroft, has always wanted to be an investigator. Instead she is stuck selling real estate with her father in Florida. When bodies start showing up in the homes that her father has listed she finally gets her chance. Shadow is thrown into utter chaos when evil Professor Jane Moriarty poisons her. She's got plans to take over the world and a make a new and evil one. Has Shadow got the same crime solving chops as her ancestors? This was a fast paced, lighthearted, and funny read. I was a bit taken aback when I discovered that the point of view was from a dog. To me though that made it that much more fun.

I was so intrigued with this book so much when I found out the book was narrated by a DOG!! I was so captivated with this book that I couldn’t put it down. It was fast paced which keeps your attention from beginning to end. It was such a funny, wacked, action, twist and turns, unexpected situations, mystery and a little twist of naughtiness that just made this book so fascinating. This book held me and kept me in this world until the end. It was such wonderfully done that I felt like I was there along for the ride. Great read.

Not your typical Sherlock Holmes book. This one follows decedents of Holmes solving mysteries. Shadow Holmes is the great granddaughter of Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s brother. Tuesday Hudson is Shadow’s cousin. Moriarty still has family…. seeking revenge. The narrator of this audiobook has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. If he’s not a native of the UK, kudos , because he was great. This is not a book for one under 16-17, because of the disclaimers above. Oh… and Watson, isn’t a person. If you want to know “what” he is, read or listen to this book. Enjoy!

This is the first time I have read anything by this author. It’s like a newer version of Sherlock Holmes but with his great grand nieces. Shadow Holmes is the great granddaughter of Mycroft Holmes and Tuesday Holmes is Sherlock Holmes great granddaughter. Something happens to Shadow and her parents so Tuesday is given the code phrase, “The Game is Afoot” by a phone call from Shadow. Which starts the whole game of trying to find Jane Moriarty and figure out what happened to Shadow and her parents. Also, Watson is a dog in this book, I find it a little strange but I definitely can’t stop reading it.

An absolutely delightful twist on Sherlock Holmes in this bizarre, irrelevant, folly and humorous tale. I have not laughed so hard in a long time. David’s writing is right up my alley. This is just what I needed. Thanks David.
Mayhem and madness ensue as Sherlock’s relatives take on the role of detective in this fun “Whodunnit” adventure along with cast of quirky characters. This original, creative and beguiling tale is narrated by none other than Watson himself, only this Watson is of the four-footed variety, a charismatic canine. There were moments when the story lulled but overall, I was a happy camper.
If you love a zany mystery, then this is the book for you.

How clever

🤣 the voice my head chose for the narrator only made it more hilarious upon finding out who the narrator is. Being a Floridian added extra humor. Hilariously witty Parody of Sherlock Holmes descendants, like riding Space Mountain😉 never knowing which direction it's going to go!

This book is a fun twist on the Sherlock Holmes/Watson story. Part of the charm of the book is that the story is told from the perspective of the canine. This book is funny, crude and a page turner. This offbeat mystery will pull you in and keep you guessing.

If you like a good mystery, especially one told from a different point of view then this is the book for you. This story is told from the dogs POV. Well written fast moving keeps the reader interested from beginning to end. There is a familial connection to the original Holmes which is nice. If you like fun mysteries, you'll enjoy this book. Very entertaining read.

In "A Game is Afoot," David Raymond expertly weaves a tale that ignites the classic essence of detective fiction and infuses it with a modern twist that is fresh, humorous, and thoroughly engaging. Focusing on Shadow Holmes, the great-granddaughter of Mycroft Holmes, Raymond takes us on a vibrant journey through the sunny, chaotic landscape of Miami—a far cry from the foggy streets of London traditionally associated with the Holmes legacy.

Shadow is a character brimming with potential, caught between her mundane job in real estate and her hidden lineage steeped in detective work. The revelation that her father is the director of a covert British spy agency adds layers of intrigue, particularly when shadowy villains emerge, led by the enchanting yet menacing Professor Jane Moriarty. While Shadow initially feels chained to expectations, her awakening to her true calling is not only thrilling but poignantly depicted, allowing readers to root for her transition from a life of selling homes to confronting international malevolence.

The supporting characters are equally delightful. Watson, the charming canine narrator, adds a whimsical touch, providing a unique perspective that is equal parts comical and insightful. Meanwhile, Tuesday Hudson, Sherlock’s granddaughter who often finds herself in hilariously stoned predicaments, and Inspector Archie Lestrade inject a dose of classic mystery with modern flair. Each character is vividly portrayed, contributing to the rich tapestry of a narrative that dances with humor, adventure, and clever references to the Holmes canon.

Raymond's writing style is both accessible and engaging, balancing witty dialogue with descriptive passages that paint vivid scenes of Miami’s eclectic backdrop. The pacing is brisk, with a plot filled with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing and entertained. The tonal blend of murder mystery interlaced with absurdity echoes the essence of Monty Python and the cheeky vibe of Austin Powers, making it a delightful read.

One of the strengths of "A Game is Afoot" lies in how Raymond embraces Florida's unique setting, allowing the vibrant culture to play a crucial role in the narrative. It feels as if the state itself is a character, cradling the action with its sun-soaked beaches and lively atmosphere while setting the stage for a saga of espionage and danger.

In conclusion, David Raymond's "A Game is Afoot" is an exhilarating homage to the legacy of Sherlock Holmes that transcends generations. It uniquely captures the spirit of detective fiction while adapting it to contemporary sensibilities. It’s a must-read for fans of the genre and for anyone who appreciates a good dose of laughter mixed with their mystery. Shadow Holmes’s adventure is one worth joining—just be prepared for a wild ride through glamour, danger, and the charming absurdity that defines this captivating story.

Shadow Holmes is the great granddaughter of Mycroft Holmes, also known as the brother of Sherlock Holmes, and therefore you would assume that she is following in the family tradition of detective work, unfortunately for Shadow, she was never encouraged to do this, in fact, she was pushed away from it and instead into the world of real estate as a part of Homes by Holmes and Holmes with her father.

That is until one day she goes on a date with a mystery woman and ends up being poisoned by her and when she dashed towards home as quickly as she can, she finds out that her parents have met the same fate, but she has always been told what to do if this occurs and so she makes one call and states that "the game is afoot!".

Fortunately for Shadow, she is saved from a gruesome fate by an unknown cousin, Tuesday Hudson and picks up a canine partner while beginning her investigation, enter, Watson, a dog with skills and a mystery all wrapped up in one adorable package. This is where things get really exciting for Shadow as she and her motley crew begun to investigate through an unusual method, houses which her father has put up for sale.

As they follow the clues to who was behind the poisonings and why Shadow lived and all signs point to the oldest enemy of the Holmes Family, a Moriarty, Dr Jane Moriarty in particular who has an evil plot to destroy and remake the world in her own way. Can Shadow and her friends stop Moriarty before her plan is put into action, or will they be too late and lose everything they hold dear? This is a mystery akin to the original Sherlock and Watson where twists, turns, truth, lies and secrets all meld together to bring an investigation to life which will keep you hooked throughout.

This was a really fun and interesting twist on the Sherlock Holmes stories. This story follows the future generation of the Holmes family as they follow in the foot steps of their amazing detective family. This story was very unique and I loved how the story was told from the point of view of Watson, the mind reading dog who has a past and mysteries of his own to solve and uncover.

Shadow Holmes thought her life and family were normal. Granted she knew of her famous family but that doesn't change her life as she works as a realtor with her dad. Things were normal or so she thought until the day she finds herself being poisoned and her parents murdered.
As Shadow follows the clues to find out who murdered her parents, why they did it and stop them Shadow uncovers more about her family and their secrets.
Now she is in a race against time to use the detective skills passed down to her, to solve this case and stop the villain before they murder anyone else.

This was a great fun story to read, filled with secrets to uncover and moments when I laughed out loud. Not only does Shadow have to deal with all the secrets kept from her by her family, there is also a cousin who has a drug problem, and ex who she can't move on from and a dog who has its own mysteries to uncover. The characters were great and the way they interact with each other especially Shadow and Tuesday really brought them to life as they interacted exactly like family would complete with bitchiness, and rude comments.
The author has put a lot of thought into this story and has been able to bring the charm and the old fashioned whodunit mystery into modern day times.

The Game is Afoot: A Shadow Holmes and Watson Mystery by David Raymond is a great little ‘Holmes’ mystery with a modern twist. It is a fun homage to the classic Sherlock Holmes tales but with a fresher, more contemporary vibe.
Mr. Raymond is a new-to-me author, so I really didn’t know what to expect from one of his stories – but I love all things Sherlock Holmes, and his take on the topic sounded very intriguing, so I took a chance and jumped right in. The author did a great job of weaving an intricate mystery that kept me engrossed until the very end.
I loved the characters and the family connections to the ‘original’ Sherlock characters. Mr. Raymond certainly provided a fresh, interesting, somewhat whacky, and quite humourous take to the classic we all love.
However, there were a few moments when the story ‘lagged’ and felt a bit slow, and some of the backstories, and secondary characters could have been fleshed out more. But they are fairly minor issues in what was otherwise a fun read.
The Game is Afoot is a clever, fun, and thoroughly enjoyable mystery with a whodunnit element, crime & investigation, drama, quirky characters, and more. So, if you're a fan of detective stories, then you might want to grab a cup of tea, settle into your favorite reading chair, and get set to play detective. 🕵️‍♂️📚
Looking forward to exploring more of Mr. Raymond’s books.
Happy reading!

Thank you, David Raymond!

The Game is Afoot is a quirky mystery with something to appeal to all mystery fans!

I was intrigued by the first few pages when I discovered the main narrator is a dog. I'm a dog lover, and I have two fur babies myself, so I knew this would be a book I would enjoy. Shadow Holmes is the great-granddaughter of Mycroft Holmes, and according to our narrator, Watson, Mycroft was the older and wiser brother, not Sherlock. Shadow is a realtor who solves murders in which the victims die in their own homes, and then she sells them. Watson lets readers know this wasn't who she was years ago. Her parents' deaths forever changed her life. Watson is only too happy to share how she became the "cool, composed, occasionally brooding, celebrity crime-fighter realtor." Buckle up, "The Game is Afoot," and you are about to go on a wild ride.

The book was well-written and witty, and the characters were quirky. For example, Tuesday Hudson, Sherlock's granddaughter, is stoned half the time. The plot is fast-paced and will keep your attention. It has elements of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Austin Powers, and my favorite, Monty Python. If you like mysteries with a lot of humor, this book is perfect for you.

I went into The Game Is Afoot: A Shadow Holmes and Watson Mystery curious about whether the world really needed yet another modern twist on Sherlock Holmes. Reading it, I think the most important thing is that the author wanted to write his own Holmes-inspired story and clearly has had a great time doing it. Other features, such as the Miami setting and the quirky, dark comedy style give it an originality that helps it stand out from the crowd.

There are plenty of references to Conan Doyle’s original stories, which will be fun for fans to try and spot before they are revealed. The main plot of the story itself gives readers plenty to puzzle over as they go through the book.

The irreverent humour won’t appeal to everyone, and there were certainly bits that weren’t for me, but I appreciate that’s part of the style and there were also parts I found really funny. That said, definitely not for younger readers!

Watson makes a great narrator, giving us details and insights that a human wouldn’t necessarily think of and lending a generally lighthearted tone to the story. There are some great characters, I hope there will be a sequel so we can see more of them!

This book gets four stars from me. I’d recommend it to Sherlock Holmes fans who enjoy weird stories and dark humour!

The Game Is Afoot: A Shadow Holmes and Watson Mystery by David Raymond. I'm new to this author so I wasn't sure what to expect but it was so good and hilarious. Its a retelling of the famous Sherlock Holmes and a great one at that. It's the story of descendants of Sherlock Holmes, Shadow Holmes who is the great granddaughter of Sherlock's brother brother then there is Tuesday Holmes who is Shadow's cousin. The narrator of the book is another great one so read this book just to find out who it is. While Shadow is forbidden from trying to be investigator by her parents so she works for her dad selling real estate in Miami. Shadow soon discovers that her father is the director of a British Spy company. Not only does Shadow end up getting to work with her dad she soon gets to investigate murders taking place at homes listed with their agency. When Shadow and her dad discover the murderer is wanting to take over the world with her mastermind they are determined to stop her. Such a fast paced, full of action and laughter story.

The Game Is Afoot is a wildly entertaining, irreverent, and thoroughly modern spin on the Sherlock Holmes mythos. David Raymond introduces us to Shadow Holmes, the great-granddaughter of Mycroft, who’s suddenly thrown into the world of espionage, murder, and family secrets when her parents are poisoned by none other than a descendant of Professor Moriarty. The story is narrated by Watson, a mind-reading dog with sass, smarts, and an unexpected emotional depth. His perspective adds a fresh, whimsical tone to what could have been a more conventional detective trope.
Shadow Holmes herself is sharp and spunky, though sometimes a bit tongue-in-cheek lol. Supporting characters like Tuesday Hudson (Sherlock’s granddaughter) and a new-age Inspector Lestrade round out the eclectic cast. The plot is fast-paced, occasionally a little chaotic, but always fun. Expect twists, high-tech spy antics, and funny jabs at everything from real estate to British intelligence. Will look out for More books from this author

As soon as I started this book I couldn't put it down! David Raymond's writing from Watson's point of view is brilliant. I love a good mystery, and I'm currently binge watching the TV show based on the Sherlock Holmes mysteries so it was great when I came across this book. The characters in this book are so much fun to learn about, and there are tons of stories going on within this book. Shadow Holmes is part of the lineage of the famous Sherlock Holmes family. She is a realtor for homes where a murder has occurred that is unsolved. I love the hilarious undertone of the book in the midst of such tragedy. Shadow's parents were murdered by the slithering antagonist Moriarty and her minions, and Shadow was almost killed as well! Shadow meets a distant cousin, seemingly reunites with her companion Watson, and continues on to solve the mystery of her family's demise, while using her analytic powers to solve other murders as well. You won't want to put this one down!

The Game Is Afoot: A Shadow Holmes and Watson Mystery by David Raymond is a great mystery book

The great-granddaughter of Sherlock's older and more intelligent brother, Mycroft Holmes, Shadow Holmes, works for her father as a Miami real estate salesperson because she is not allowed to follow her vocation. Furthermore, until she and her parents are poisoned by the seductive and unquestionably evil Professor Jane Moriarty, Shadow is unaware that her father is the head of The Bee, a covert British spy organization. Shadow is thrust into her ancestors' detective lives by the arrival of Watson, our endearing canine raconteur with his own Holmesian mystery, Tuesday Hudson, Sherlock's stoned granddaughter, and Inspector Archie Lestrade of Scotland Yard.

Every page was exciting, and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen. The story really brings excitement into your life. I couldn’t put the book down. I can't wait to read from this author.

A twist on the Sherlock mysteries you might be used to. We have Shadow Holmes and Tuesday Hudson who are cousins. And who happen to be the Great Granddaughters of Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes. Well, the apple does not fall far from the tree with these two sleuth detecting ladies. They are on a mission to find Jane Moriarty, the Great Grandniece of James Moriarty. Who also happens to be who killed Shadow's parents and tried to kill her as well. As they get closer to Jane, secrets are spilled in regard to who Shadow's parents really were. I mean of course you have to have a trusty Watson in the mix as well. So, we have Watson, A cute dog they picked up along the way. Who happens to have flashbacks of all the mysteries from the original Holmes and Watson duo. You will enjoy this new take on this family.

I have read quite a few stories that are Sherlock Holmes retellings, a continuation of the legend of set in the world of Holmes. However, this is the first time I have read one that is focused on his descendants two generations down the line. I thought the story was written well overall, and I found myself engaging with the world the author was portraying. I wanted to get to know more about the characters and I wanted to see the mystery unfold.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed learning about their writing style. I thought the book was a great mystery story and I loved trying to unpick what was going on. it was great getting to visit the world of Holmes in a different way. This is a story a thoroughly enjoyed.

The Game Is Afoot is a hilarious take on the old Sherlock Holmes mystery, and I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. Shadow Holmes is the great granddaughter of Sherlock Holmes' older brother and sells real estate for a living. Little does she know, her life is about to get more interesting. When murders start popping up at the homes her father is selling, Shadow must solve the mystery before Professor Jane Moriarty destroys everything. The best part is that the story is told from the perspective of a dog. This book is full of comedy and very lighthearted and fun. If you enjoy murder-mystery comedy gold, you will love this book. I look forward to finding more reads from this author!

The Game Is Afoot: A Shadow Holmes and Watson Mystery is a fun mystery story invoking a bit of Doyle, Christie, and other mystery writers. Shadow is the great-granddaughter of Mycroft Holmes who has lived life working as a realtor. After the murder of her parents by Jane Moriarty she learns about their secret identities. The story is a fun mystery set in Florida. There are lots of interesting characters leading the reader on a chase to the end. I enjoyed the different characters and how they relate to the original Holmes stories. The plot gets a bit wild at times, but it isn't distracting. The characters are quirky and odd which add to the story. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future and getting to go on another mystery with Shadow and Watson.
