When a catastrophic EMP attack plunges the world into chaos, civilization collapses overnight.
Amidst the anarchy, New York thrift store owner Erika Blake stumbles upon a leather-bound survival guide—The Safety Plan. Written by a father to his estranged son, Michael Shepherd, it outlines a path to safety, but at a cost. To escape the disaster, Erika must follow the journal’s coordinates to a remote estate in Maine or track down its intended recipient—the only man who may hold the key to her survival.
Meanwhile, in the rugged wilderness of Mount Desert Island, Maine, Michael's family fights to protect their estate. With no power, no communication, and basic services crumbling, lawlessness spreads across the region. As violence escalates and neighbors turn against each other, the island's fragile balance teeters on the edge of collapse.
In a fractured nation where alliances mean survival and trust comes at a deadly cost, one journal may bridge the distance between strangers—or lead them all to ruin.

ANOTHER GREAT BOOK BY JACK HUNT AND WHICH WILL BE ANOTHER GREAT SERIES!
☆☆☆☆☆
All Hell breaks out when an EMP attack hits the U.S. taking down all electronics, power, and supply lines, bringing the government (city, county, state, and federal) to its knees.
This story takes place in Maine and New York, giving us a perspective of both a rural community and a major U.S. city. The main characters are not only hit by the EMP but criminal organizations as well. Most of the Shepherd family, being in Maine, might be able to survive the chaos thanks a lot due to the foresight and preparations of their father. The same man who had requested a package to be delivered to his estranged son in New York prior to the EMP attack to help him prepare for the worst and hopefully help him out with a plan to make back to his family and hopefully safety.
This is definitely a great book for all those who truly enjoy a action-packed book that will hold your interest throughout, with characters you will find yourself routing for from one page to the next all the way from the first page to the last, and hopefully just the first in many books in this series.
Quotes:
"People who might have once adhered to societal rules now found themselves crossing lines they never imagined. Morality blurred, twisted by desperation."
"Survival demanded choices that would have once seemed unthinkable."
"It was like handing the criminals a winning lottery ticket."
Maybe it's me but I struggled with so many inconsistences in this book. The NYC chase seemed like it was out of the Warriors movie when all rival gangs come together to chase down the wanted trio. And society has broken down in such a short time but where are the millions of New Yorkers; city seemed deserted. Given the size of NYC & the surrounding boroughs the trio are easily spotted numerous times trying to escape. It takes me a 1/2 hour to find my wife in a small department store. And criminals are all about finding the trio instead of looting & stockpiling supplies. Really. With no communication and cars, how did all the cops get to the Rockefeller House for a morning raid? And final shootout with Michael, he shoots Diego twice as he is running towards him but he can get out of that and is getting the hell beat out of him until save by Erika shooting Diego. And after saying he was not leaving until they're dead, he just leaves having no idea about Hector, who of course still comes after them. And worse was after 80% through it was obvious the stories weren't wrapping up. I guess I missed it was a multi-book series.

The Safety Plan is a post-EMP survival thriller which brings together different factions, families and motorcycle gangs thrown together following a devastating EMP attack. One of the characters wrote a "Survival Plan" for his kids in case something caused society to crumble. The writing is every bit as good as one should expect from Hunt, with excellent characters, plotting, pacing, action, environments, everything is crisp and clear, providing the reader a very visceral experience. 5/5 stars, recommended for Hunt fans, survival thriller fans and anyone who enjoys a truly excellent thriller!
This is a fairly typical EMP attack type with a bit too much of a kitchen sink set of elements that are also typical. Dysfunctional family with secrets (the secret being telegraphed early), mean biker gang that immediately starts terrorizing and killing, law enforcement rat (spotted that one early), cartel on a vendetta against a lady and her son who allies with a dysfunctional family member. An EMP strike would have devastating effect but most of this focus is on so many sets of bad guys and those that might be classed as good guys seem incapable of handling any of it. I'm on the fence about continuing since I'm only mildly interested in what happens next.
Author seemed to lack the knowledge and experience of survival. Repetitive phrases throughout the entire book. Contradictory scenarios abound. Bodies do not decompose overnight. Too many impossible situations taking place over a 24 hour period. Not a believable storyline. Don't get me started on the poor editing.
I liked all the characters, they drew me in so fast my head spun! I could hardly put it down. Anyone who likes this theme will be drawn in. Jack Hunt is phenomenal as an Apocalyptic writer. I would recommend it very highly to any of my friends who enjoy this kind of book.
I usually enjoy Jack Hunt books, but this one was a little boring. The gang chase went on way too long. Action on the island was pretty good even if a few leaps were made. To me there were a couple of "there's no way they could have known that" moments, but...it was OK. Will I read the next one? Yes!
Certainly one of the better posts-apocalyptic books I have read since the genre became a thing. The characters are more fleshed out and multidimensional, (even if the flesh gets wounded along the way). Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.and
I get it. Think of a good plot but then you need a story line to fill all those pages. Lately crime lords and bike gangs have come into the story line. At first just a mention but more and more they are taking over the whole story. This brings BOTH and it's not to the benefit of the story.
Good grief. What a waste of time and paper. I’m a major post-apoc/SHTF fan-girl. 90% of what I read is from the genre. But this??? Do not waste your effort or $$. The ridiculous NY gang side story and the motorcycle gang side story? Where the hell is the post-apocalyptic/SHTF story exactly. God, this was awful.
I struggled with this review, mostly because this book was not my cup of tea. Organized crime meets the apocalypse? I did read the epilogue with the author’s own struggle with how to deal with such a complex story. Though I didn’t much care for the story I very much appreciated the good writing and unusual take on the EMP scenario.
Another chapter or two with Robert would have been nice. The two main storylines each having critical criminal gang activity grasps for unnecessary action and obstacles. Sometimes just surviving and continuing one step at a time is enough. Good enough to move on to book two.
Why do authors feel the need to have diarrhea of the pen. Probably won’t continue with book 2. This is the first book that I have read from this author and most likely the last.
I stopped handing out 4 and 5 star reviews but this one definitely warrants a 4 star review. The characters are easy to relate to and the storyline keeps you hooked. I have a feeling book will be just as enthralling!
As usual JH has concocted a great read with Good characters. I found it a bit slow at first but bare with it as it gathers pace . Not going to give it away you will have to read it !!
Enjoyed the first book, will say these types of stories always show the bad side of people and less of the good side. Would enjoy some positive events during the story to help avoid so much violence. Just my thoughts!
The characters good and evil are portrayed in a manner that makes their lives jump out and grabs you saying pay attention. There is more coming. This would make a good movie, but be aware it could be rated "R".
This book caught my attention almost immediately. I have read and enjoyed many other books by Jack Hunt. The Safety Plan is the beginning of one of his best accomplishment. Highly recommended read
A truly different take on teotwawki. Can not wait for the next book. Truly a new plot with twists. Is good or evil going to triumph? So much incredible things for characters to deal with!
I found this book to be disappointing and tedious. Typically, I can get involved in a good post-apocalyptic novel, but so much of the narrative was focused more on different groups of criminals attacking the main characters that I decided that I didn't care to finish it.
Book one is a good start to what looks like an exciting series. Drama, suspense, action all come together with believable character and story line. Looking forward to future chapters
Great read with real people doing hard things they never imagined necessary for their future. They all had plans. Plans change and change the planners. I plan to read book 2.
I've got so much to say about this amazing book but, I think I will wait until I've read the rest of the books. I WILL say this tho... If you love fast paced books, then, this one is a must!!
Jack Hunt always seems to deliver a great read and he has done it again. You get attached to the characters, sucked into the action and all the unexpected twists. Enjoy!
