Who has discovered Flatley’s true identity, and will Jill be able to protect him? Jill is also determined to find out what happened in Middle Tweaking that eventually led to Myrtle Turtle’s untimely demise. Meanwhile, at the office, Winky has a new friend, but Jill is convinced he may not be what he seems to be.
One would think that after 51 books, a series might grow stale. To be honest, somewhere around 48 or 49 I started to have some of those worries, myself. But no! Book 52 put any such fears to rest.
Oh yes, all the usual suspects are in play, no worries there. Truth be told, however, even Monty is far less annoying and shocker of all, Grandma’s a little bit less of a witch with a capitol “B.” All the snark and sarcasm are still there, but they no longer dominate the storyline. Then again, Jill IS finally maturing, if only a tad, so her best snark is saved for when she breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to the readers (and THIS she does often).
But there is an underlying pathos here, as the mortality of, well, mortals comes into play. And while we have known intellectually that sups live longer lives, to have grandma casually discussing her age as over 500 while mortals are dying somehow brings this into clearer focus.
None of this brings down the story or the fun we find in this series. What it does do is create a sense, perhaps the tone, of what might be fermenting in the back of Jill’s mind about her life in the mortal world and every aspect of that, including Jack. I don’t say this with any certainty, but I cannot believe that Ms. Abbott hasn’t had these same thoughts.
Regardless, this story ends on the kind of cliffhanger that really doesn’t “hurt.” It’s a soft landing for the reader and we can only hope that it’s just as soft for Jill’s latest client. Until next time, ENJOY!
Likely if you're here, you're like me and have read the entire series, so I don't need to explain to you MT five stars. Adele has a formula that works and she's a solid writer, so every novel - tho it follows the same formula feels new and fun. I love the characters and the stories. And I'm so glad the books keep coming.
If you are new here, I recommend starting at the beginning. Adele does a great job of character building and has a wonderful sense of humour and having the back stories is incredibly important to understanding the book. As well, its entirely worth your time. Its an easy to read book (I binged her entire work in 2020/21 while stuck at home - better than tv for sure!) And always a good time. I leave every book feeling lighter and excited for the next installment. Thanks Adele!
As usual, this chapter of witch tales starring Jill Maxwell, was fantastic! She always seems to have so much going on at once and yet she keeps all of her cases straight on. What with her teaching at CASS, then two or three cases, her aunt, grandmother, cousins and of course her husband Jack, it's amazing she doesn't have a break down, or two. She also has her friends who keep her busy or she can count on their help. It's great to find out that there will be another book and I can't wait. Many Thanks to the author Adele Abbott.
I sound like a recording, but again a great book. I don't k ow how you come up with these crazy characters - woobles, Humph, Winky on and on. Anyway I enjoyed the cases and I love it when Jill talks to the readers - too funny.
I always enjoy these books. They are such a treat. Not serious and a fun read to boot. They must be good if I’ve stuck with them for 52 books. I love the fact that has contradicts and things change and she points that out to the reader. Also, ghost cats, what’s not to like.
