I thoroughly enjoyed “My Mother Always Says” by Gwen Borden and Amy Goober—I couldn’t put it down and finished it in just 2.5 hours! That’s a feat for me, as it usually takes me a month to get through a book!! From start to finish, it kept my attention with its heartfelt stories and meaningful lessons, many of which felt deeply relatable to my own life—and I’m sure to many others as well.

What makes this book so special is its authenticity. The dynamic between Gwen and Amy, a mother and daughter who are so different yet so alike, is both compelling and real. Their experiences, wisdom, and love shine through every page, making this not just a book but an emotional journey.

I cannot recommend “My Mother Always Says enough”! It moved me emotionally and personally, leaving a lasting impact. If you're looking for a book that speaks to the heart, this is it.

The stories in “My Mother Always Says”, and their ensuing lessons, provide insight into the personal history of the authors, along with a touch of American history. These are stories of resilience and persistence as it is through the sharing of personal details that helps the reader understand that we are all dealing with life’s ups and downs. It is the way in which you deal with them that matters. After all, the main lesson that is woven into most of the stories, and is mentioned throughout the book is: “There are no bad experiences, only ones you don’t learn from.”

It is a quick read and one that has at least one key piece of information to share. It’s definitely worth the read!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC. This was a heartwarming story combining a memoir and self help guidance. It was interesting to see both mother and daughter’s perspective on each lesson. This story had helpful yet realistic guidance and remained positive despite the hardships the authors have experienced. It was definitely a quick read but worth it.

“The only bad experience is one you don’t learn from. “Don’t ask why questions.” "You can tell your adult children what to do, but only tell them once.”

So says Gwen Borden, the 93-year-old social worker, entrepreneur and professor whose eventful personal history is profiled in “My Mother Always Says,” a well written, engaging and useful new book by Borden and her daughter, Amy Goober, an action and accountability coach.

Each of the 12 chapters of “My Mother Always Says” starts with a first-person account of a pivotal stage of Borden’s life followed by the lessons learned by Borden and Goober. The depth and insights of this mother-daughter partnership deliver complimentary perspectives, providing a book whose value is both expansive and profound. While dividing the book into 25 brief lessons encourages ease of reading in brief sessions, one lesson at a time, I found Borden’s story and the lessons learned so compelling I read it in two sittings.

Borden was born during the depression to parents whose older daughter was diagnosed with polio and whose illness and care took most of their attention away from their newborn daughter. She lost her husband to brain cancer at 42, becoming a widow and single mother within a few weeks of his diagnosis. Despite these and other significant life challenges, Borden has, throughout the years, used her experiences to learn and transform her life’s path. As Borden would say, “how can you use the pain in your life to help you move forward?”

Borden and Goober’s lessons have universal value. Both Borden’s life story and Goober’s current experiences as an Action Coach guiding women in transitional stages of their lives provide real world scenarios in which to frame -- and reframe -- life events, even those that seem insurmountable. As Goober says, “It’s important to remember that while you can’t change the experience, you can change how you frame it, and what you learn from it.”

“My Mother Always Says” is a gem of a book. It is a loving conversation between mother and daughter told through anecdotes and commentary. Gwen (mom) recounts her long and wonderful life in fascinating well told chapters and then shares the lessons she learned from that part of her life. Amy (daughter) also reflects on her mom’s life and lessons sharing her point of view from each timeframe and her perspective looking back. It’s the perfect structure for this kind of storytelling. It’s part auto-biography part self-help, but the self-help portion is the natural evolution of the auto-biography.

I enjoyed this book very much, and I am sure I’ll flip through it in the future picking a story or lesson to reflect on. My own mother has been gone for 13 years now, and I miss her every day, she was very much like Gwen in a number of ways and I heard her voice as I was reading reminding me of the life lessons she imparted to me.

My favorite lesson from the book (as someone who constantly ruminates on what I said to someone in 8th grade, and is an inveterate “catastrophizer” ) is #13: “We often worry about the wrong things”. A gentle reminder to not worry about things because what we think might happen is really never how it actually goes and how much worry is a waste of time and energy that we could be spending in other places. Thank you.

I highly recommend this “My Mother Always Says” by Gwen Borden and Amy Goober as a beautiful story of mothers and daughters, and lessons that remind us of what’s really important and encourage us along the way. The book is perfectly structured for a long afternoon reading or short bites when you need a pick me up. You won’t regret the time you spend with this book!

"My Mother Always Says: 25 Lessons for Finding the Silver Lining" is a refreshingly honest and deeply moving read. The authors bravely open up about their personal experiences, creating a powerful connection with the reader. What truly sets this book apart is its unwavering focus on providing helpful guidance. It's clear the authors' primary intention is to empower readers to discover positivity, even in challenging circumstances.

The strength of the book lies in its ability to offer practical strategies for building healthy relationships and escaping destructive ones. It instills a sense of optimism, suggesting that a brighter future is attainable, especially for those grappling with trauma or anxiety. More than just a collection of stories, this book acts as a comforting companion, encouraging readers to embrace authenticity and live with purpose. The lessons, inspired by the author's mother's wisdom, provide a roadmap for women to break free from societal constraints and forge their own paths.

This book isn't just read; it's experienced. It's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a valuable resource for anyone seeking to find light in the darkness. I know I will carry many of these lessons with me moving forward.

"My Mother Always Says" by Amy Goober and Gwen Borden is an enjoyable read that sneaks up on you with moments of deep insight and reflection. This is an intelligent and inspirational book by a very accomplished mother-daughter team. Gwen shares 25 invaluable lessons from her remarkable nine-plus decades of life, while her daughter, Amy, beautifully weaves in her own insights and experiences.
What I loved most was how each chapter offered new words of wisdom. Gwen’s stories are both captivating and motivating, showing us how life's challenges can become opportunities for growth. Her reflections on what she learned from each experience are not only heartwarming but also serve as gentle reminders of what truly matters in life.
Amy’s perspective adds an extra layer of depth, making the lessons feel even more relatable. She seamlessly connects her mother’s stories to her own experiences, offering practical and thoughtful insights on how to apply these lessons to our own lives.

My Mother Always Says is a touching homage from daughter Amy to her mother Gwen, capturing their unique and shared experiences as they navigate the ever-evolving landscape of life. Amy reflects on the invaluable lessons Gwen has imparted over her remarkable 93 years, emphasizing that family is defined by more than just blood relations and that a supportive community is essential. She highlights the importance of taking initiative and embracing one’s authentic self, noting that what may seem like missteps can often lead to unforeseen blessings. Throughout her life, despite facing challenges and moments of solitude, Gwen found beauty in every journey she undertook, particularly when she followed her own path rather than conforming to the expectations of others. A powerful takeaway from Gwen’s wisdom is: “Remember, there are no negative experiences, only those from which we fail to grow.” Filled with honesty and vulnerability with an ancestral heritage feel, this book inspired me to embrace the journey because as we go, we grow!

When I became a parent, one of my biggest hopes was that my son would learn lessons from me that would positively impact his life and eventually pass those lessons down from generation to generation. What Amy Goober & Gwen Borden have created in “My Mother Always Says” is just that. It is a rich and clever legacy of lessons that these special women are sharing with all of us. What a gift!

I especially loved the chapter “Don’t Be Afraid to Fail.” Both Gwen and Amy showed willpower, character and strength to keep moving forward, even as they had self-doubt. What an important lesson for all of us.

This book takes us on a journey of two exceptional women, their relationship with each other and how their love and respect shine through. Throughout the book, all the lessons they learned and shared are lessons all of us can learn from and grow from. What a legacy they have created for their readers and for their family. This is a must-read for anyone because when we stop learning, we stop growing, no matter what age.

In "My Mother Always Says", Amy Goober beautifully captures the wisdom, resilience, and love of her mother through a collection of quotes and life lessons that span decades of history. From being born in a polio epidemic to serving as a counselor in the aftermath of 9/11, Gwen's journey is one of strength and compassion, set against the backdrop of some of the most defining events of our time. One of the themes that resonated most with me was the idea that we can be parented by more than just our own parents - a sentiment that rings true in my own life. The guidance and care I have received came from many sources including my work leadership and dear friends who have shaped who I am in ways I hadn't realized until I reflected on them. The book is a heartfelt tribute to the wisdom of mothers everywhere. It's an inspiring read that will make you laugh, reflect, and more of all, appreciate the voices of those who have guided us along the way. I highly recommend it!

‘My Mother Always Says’ is beautifully written by an amazing, strong resilient mother and daughter team. It is a heartwarming combination of memoir and self help. Gwen Borden is thriving at the young age of 93. She shares many of the challenging, joyful and difficult times during her life. And the bonus is the lessons she’s learned shared throughout the book. Her daughter, Amy shares her own perspective during her childhood and throughout her adult life. Oftentimes mothers and daughters do not see eye to eye or want advice. The more years we experience life, we see the value, appreciate the wisdom offered from a loved one - especially a mother.
Two of my favorite from Gwen as I relate to while reading the book are:

'There are no bad experiences in life, just the ones you don’t learn from'
'We often worry about the wrong things’

I highly recommend this book which is a quick read with a lot of value.

My mother always says by Amy Goober and Gwen Borden is a short book of life lessons from Gwen and her daughter Amy.

Each chapter opens Gwen telling a story in her own words, followed by the lessons Gwen learned from that time. Then her daughter Amy includes some of her own stories and some of her clients stories, as she works as an action coach.

It doesn't read like a story but more like a message board. Where one person (the mom) writes their experience and then the daughter and sometimes others have their say in the comment section.

The tips do give you something to think about sometimes though. I enjoyed the pictures half way through the book. It gave the story a more personalized vibe.

Thank you Gwen and Amy for sharing your story and partnering with NetGalley. I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and review.

Wisdom. Insight. Courage. Clarity. Faith. Self-Compassion. Authenticity. Power. Inspiration.

All of this and more await the reader of this impactful mother-daughter collaboration. Through the prism of storytelling, both authors share their unvarnished perspectives on life's unexpected experiences, inviting readers to reflect on life lessons relevant to any age and stage of life.

This is the type of book that will end up dog-eared and reread through the years, referred to in the aftermath of a life crisis as a comfort and a motivator in those unexpected times we all face. The 'lessons' conveyed here feel like old friends you are finally getting to really know and appreciate. A joy to read and reflect on.

Gwen Borden’s amazing stories and life experiences are enough by themselves to make for an entertaining read, but the real magic comes from Gwen and her daughter, Amy Goober, both weaving the lessons from those experiences into their own daily lives.

This is a thought provoking book that causes you to reflect on your own upbringing and life decisions, to recognize what you learned along the way, and to ultimately turn that into meaningful action. The dominant theme of staying positive in the face of adversity is relevant for any reader.

Amy and Gwen expertly remind us that parenting is complicated, and frankly so is having parents!

Great read!

The introduction grabbed me right away when Goober states the young flashy influencers have taken over but it’s the older set with the wisdom of age and experience that people continue to look for guidance and comfort.
It’s a quick read and I liked learning both about Goober and Borden’s back stories.
There is a ton of sage advice placed in a short volume. I identified with most of the advice because most are the mottos and the credos I live by.
Basically the message is quit wallowing and just get on with it, whatever it is.
Good advice indeed.
Thanks Girl Friday Productions and PR by the Book for the advance copy.

No need to delve deeply into this beautiful book for the secret of life to be revealed. It’s on page 1: “because of … not in spite of…”. As a girl scout, Gwen learned first aid during the war as part of her own ready-for-anything personality. Gwen continues to give first aid to her clients, her children and grandchildren, and now anyone who has the good fortune to spend time with her by reading this treasure of a book. Along with her daughter Amy’s insightful reflections, readers will transform their thinking about negotiating this often hard-edged world.

What a great read! This dynamic mother-daughter team has compiled a well thought out list of life experiences and the lessons learned. The format is meaningful, appropriately entertaining and full of relatable stories of life's challenges and the "silver lining" that lies beneath those challenges. While the introduction mentions a focus on women, I can tell you that as a male reader, the twelve chapters and twenty five lessons learned are absolutely appropriate for virtually all readers, regardless of gender. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this book! There’s nothing more valuable than advice from a wise, older person who’s lived through life’s ups and downs. My Mother Always Says… is full of timeless wisdom, heartfelt lessons, and reminders that sometimes the simplest words can carry the deepest meaning. Amy Goober did a beautiful job capturing the kind of guidance that sticks with you long after you’ve finished reading. It’s the kind of book that makes you smile, nod, and think of your own mother’s favorite sayings.

This engaging book begins with the fascinating story of a mother born during the dark days of the Depression with a sister afflicted by polio. After a very lonely childhood with her parents focusing soley on her sister, Gwen persevered and eventually her independence and determination brought her much happiness and success. However, after marrying a wonderful man and raising two children together, tragedy struck. Now a widow, Gwen eventually created an impressive career and a new life with her second husband as her children soon went off to college and started their own careers. At 93, Gwen shares relatable wisdom as a parent and a social worker, written with incredible honesty and even humor. Her daughter Amy, who, with her husband, raised three now adult children, began her career in advertising. Eventually leaving to establish a popular bakery, Amy later founded a successful women's Action Coach business and an events company. She takes her mother's great wisdom and advice and shares similar experiences from her own life. This poignant collaboration is hard to put down, and gives enlightening perspective and lessons for Mothers and Daughters along life's journey.
