Veiled Calls at Twilight

Rate this book
I spent my life trying to escape my mother’s superstitions. Her rituals. Her whispers of evil lurking beyond.

I chose logic. A master’s degree. A new life.

But when she died, guilt dragged me back to honor her in the only way I knew how. A quiet song at her grave. A final goodbye.

Then he appeared.

A man covered in shadows, tattoos, and riddles. The next thing I knew, I was unconscious, and when I woke, I was no longer free.

I found myself chained to a bed, surrounded by three men who claim my mother’s past held the answers they needed. They were violent. Cold. Unforgiving. But beneath the surface, I saw it, the cracks. The pain. The brokenness.

I should've fought, no, I should've ran, but instead, something deeper called me to them.

As enemies closed in and their father’s empire demanded blood, the lines between hate and obsession blurred. They wanted answers. I wanted freedom, but fate may have other plans.

And if I fell for them, it wouldn’t just cost me my heart… it could cost me my life.

This is a dark RH mafia with a small sprinkle of mystical elements. It's up to the reader to decide if it's all psychosis and mental instability… or something old and traditional… something you can't explain. For content/trigger warnings, please check the authors website.

This is a standalone, why choose, mafia romance with a dark, chaotic, and twisted storyline featuring a baddie heroine and 3 unhinged MMCs 👀 I LOVED this one. Unpredictably chaotic, full of mystical elements, and heartachingly powerful. Perfect for lovers of taboo dark romance like Den of Vipers!! I love Kira Stanley's writing style, especially how she easily makes me fall in love with morally black, sometimes psychotic men!!

After Kazia's mother dies, she follows her wishes, even though she doesn't quite understand them. Her mother was Romani, and Kazia had no interest in learning of her heritage. She wanted to be a normal girl. Now she wishes that she listened when she had the chance. As she's singing her mother's soul song at her grave, she encounters a strange man who talks about the voices in his head. Next thing, she's waking up, chained to a bed in a strange place and has three men demanding things of her. The more she learns about these men, the more her heart aches for them. Then the dreams start. Navigating her strange dreams and even stranger new feelings is difficult, but when the men's father start making demands, it will get to a point that they'll have to choose, her or him?

I was super keen to read this one as I've read some of Stanley's past works and thoroughly enjoyed them. This one was substantially darker than the previous that I've read and I really enjoyed it. I did find that the beginning was a little bit convoluted though I can't completely explain how, but once the story began to form properly for me and the story straightened out and became a bit more linear, I dropped straight into it and didn't want to come back out.

The characters were a lot of fun, and I had a great time getting to know each of the brothers. Caesar was of course my favourite; I can't go past a cinnamon roll psycho. Though the other two did grow on me eventually. The father was well written too. He really felt like an immovable, unstoppable force which when writing a straight up human character, that can be difficult to do, but Stanley did it in spades. I enjoyed Kazia's character as well and I really loved the addition of the Romani culture and practices that were included with her back story and the story in general. I've only read maybe a couple of other books that have touched on the Romani culture, and none this in depth.

The story itself was well written and enjoyable. As said earlier, I did struggle a little bit in the beginning, but I can't even explain why, so it was probably a me issue, however, by about 30% in or so, the story really gelled together well, and I was flying. Though I was fairly certain as to what was going to happen and I was correct on it, it didn't detract from the story at all. Even though I had picked what would happen, the journey to get there was super fun. The end bit with the father was fantastic and gave me literal goosebumps which I always applaud.

All in all, Stanley never fails to impress me. I've enjoyed every single book of hers that I've read and I'll continue to purchase her stories because they're always a great ride and good fun with fantastic characters and swoon worthy MMCs. If you want a dark romance that is a standalone, that touches on stuff not seen a lot in other books while still being contemporary, give this one a go!

Overall this was a solid book with a good mix of characters, heat and plot 👍 This was a standard storyline in terms of the dark magic element but what was interesting was the Romani element, I haven’t encountered it before, and how it related to the organised crime families and their power.
Kazia has her own trauma and all she wants is to survive, she has to question her own morals when she begins to fall for her captors 🙈 Caesar is the exterminator for the family with voices in his head and has a childlike nature however he is utterly devoted to his Roma and would do anything for her. Ion is prickly in nature with very little care in the world yet Kazia brings his heat back to life; then there’s eldest brother Nicu with the world on his shoulders trying to protect those around him from the evil that’s their father 😳 four different characters who shouldn’t really gel come together to form a family and fight for each other 🥰

Loved this book and whilst it is a mafia story and there are plenty of them around, this one was very different. This is very much a contemporary story with elements of the supernatural that don’t really have any true benefit to give the characters a leg up. Don’t expect magic slinging and fate weaving etc. Cezar is my absolute favourite, should we play favourites? As long as Kazia doesn’t I’m sure they’ll be all good. This book doesn’t do a whole lot of world building and it’s very much thrown in at the start of the action. It’s fast paced with plenty of sexy times scenes which are varied enough that they keep you hooked. There is plenty of backstory there waiting that could be mined if the story were to continue but on its own as a standalone it’s great.

Cezar was the star here! I should probably be worried about myself that I adored him. BUT my fave thing about him was how he was all in from the very first moment. He didn't waver; he didn't second guess. He followed his heart, well, and his voices, and fell head over knives in love with Kazia. Nicu and Ion, like Cezar, had tragic backstories that made you want to reach in and hug 'em, but they needed persuading to see how perfect Kazia was for the three brothers. The revenge at the end was so sweet!

wow!

This book was awesome! These pages kept right on giving. There was so much action and even unaliving that was unhinged. A hidden princess and three brothers all having trauma. I couldn’t wrap my head around how one female could have all three fell for her. Cezar the unhinged one with voices,Ion the handsome one and the elder nicu . Let me just say their father was a horrid man and deserved every single thing he got. Again this book was awesome!

Having performed a ritual to honour her mother, Kazia can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing she is in a better place. However, she wasn’t expecting company. The next thing she knows, she wakes up in a bed, not her own.

When Kazia comes face to face with one of her captors, Caesar, she doesn’t know what to make of him, especially his two brothers Ion and Nicu. Their father, Arak, wants Margaret Jones, but when he learns of her passing, he is not happy, but they do one better, her daughter Kazia.

Caesar is utterly devoted to Kazia, claiming her as his wife, his Roma. Yet the voices in his head tell him that she’s important to their family. Ion is grumpy personified. He has little regard for the world as he employs methods just to help him get through. Nicu has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. Being the older brother, there is a lot of pressure for him to succeed. His driving force is his brother, his need to protect them from the machinations of their father.

What they don’t realise is that Kazia has her own trauma, stemmed from her childhood, her fight and flight kicking in. Because all she wants to do is survive.

The longer Kazia spends with Caesar, Ion, and Nicu, the more she learns about who and what they are. She begins to question her own morals because she is falling for all three of her captors. And when Ion shows a mutual interest, jealousy is aroused. The only person they need to get on board is Nicu. Because Kazia is changing them.

Even when they share the trauma of there own childhoods with her, and she is exposed to what they actually do, knowing their fathers intentions, there is fear, because this is the reality of her situation and they want her going in with eyes wide open.

Because time has run out and they face their father Arak. There plan was to over throw him, however he was one step ahead and now they find themselves in a predicament with Kazia caught in the middle, because when they learn what Kazia is, a seer, there fathers intention was to marry her and exploit her, but Caesar goes feral for his Roma and well let’s just say that Arak got what he deserved.

Nicu claims his rightful place alongside Ion and Caesar, and Kazia accepts her gift as her three captors. Now, her husbands accept their love for her as their wife as she does for them.

This book had the right amount of spice, because there was no one else that could compete with Caesar when it came to him pleasing Kazia, except Kazia showed another side when it came to Ion, the power she had over him was hot as, but Nicu, with Kazia he was able to take his power back, giving him the control he needed. Because with her by their side, they're are a formidable force to be reckoned with.

Recommend both the author and the book.

I received an ARC. Therefore, I am submitting a voluntary review.

This book pulled me in right away and didn't let go until the end.
While this was a darker read, I also found it hauntingly beautiful in a way.
Of course, it was filled with so many different emotions. My heart broke for each of the main characters, but especially the brothers.
Kazia was definitely their missing piece, but they were also what she needed.
I loved the relationship between Cezar and Kazia. He loved her from the start and all his crazy made me love him even more.
The spicy scenes were so hot. The banter between the brothers had me laughing at times.
Overall, I think it was a great read. I loved the ending, it was very satisfying. 😉

it starts a bit like Den of Vipers, but with a twist. It ends up being flat and boring.
I don’t understand all those super positive reviews, especially counting all the mistakes I found in the book.

OMG, I loved this book. I must be as twisted as Ms. Stanley, because I love myself a bit of lovable psycho! The book follows the 3 brothers, each having a job within the family's hierarchy. The brothers have been through so much in the lifetime because of their abusive father Arek. He has controlled everything about their lives, the years of abuse, which tears at your heart, but at the same time, the craziness makes you laugh. Honestly, could not put this book down.

We have the 3 brothers Nicu, Ion, and Cezar, sent to the USA to bring back Margaret Jones, to their father, the abusive head of the Azadian Mafia. But things don't go as planned. While staking her home, Cezar comes across her daughter Kazia and follows her to see if she leads him to Margaret. He falls hard and fast for Kazia; he knows she is his soulmate, and she quietens the voices in his head. So he takes her back to the brothers, and the fun begins!

Nicu, the oldest brother, is being groomed to take over, but their father, Arek, has groomed them by fear. Nicu has had to withstand beatings and other abusive methods by his sadistic father. He couldn't help his brothers when he was younger, but he'll take any punishment now if it keeps them safe.

Ion, the second oldest, has been bred for his looks. This is his purpose in life. He runs the clubs. His father has used him, getting him hooked on drugs and alcohol. This is another form of control. His body is used as a weapon, to seduce, and get information to aid Arek.

Lastly, my favourite, Cezar, the youngest, who they all think is crazy because he hears 3 voices in his head: Nan, M, and Cal. But his mother was from the Romani line, so are these voices real and part of the Romani gift? He is the family's executioner, bred to kill and also extract information from their enemies by any means necessary. But he knows Zaria is the one; she quietens the voices in his head, and he is not giving her up. He now has to convince the brothers that Zaria is not only his but theirs as well and she is the one that will set them free.

Zaria, dealing with her loss, is trying to keep herself safe in the dangerous situation she finds herself in, hoping her psych schooling will help deal with these 3 dangerous men. As she has been more for science, more practicable, she was never really interested in her mother's teaching of her Romani heritage, only listening with half an ear. But could this heritage now be what she needs to survive? Even though she knows that Cezar could have mental health problems, she tries to keep her distance and be objective, but their is something about him that tears down her walls and she gives into his ramblings. She is his goddess, his saviour, and that devotion lowers her defences.

🇬🇧The premise of this book is so intriguing. I loved the lore around the Romani culture and the fact that this is a DARK RH Mafia story where the mafia isn’t the typical Italian or Russian one, but Armenian instead. That alone made me curious and felt refreshingly different from what we usually see in the genre.

For that reason, this book could’ve easily deserved a higher rating. But it really needed a more careful edit. The amount of mistakes throughout kept pulling me out of the story and left me disappointed.

Story-wise, it is refreshing. Still, I think it would have benefited from more pages. Over 50% of the book is focused solely on Cezar and Kazia’s relationship. Don’t get me wrong — I loved it (I’m weak for a psycho who’s both sweet and unhinged), but I missed seeing her connection with the other two brothers, Nicu and Ion. For a RH, the development leaned so heavily toward Cezar that it almost read like a single love interest book, which left me a little unsatisfied.

Surprisingly, the fast burn didn’t bother me. In fact, I think it was handled really well. But the resolution with Arek felt way too quick for the level of threat he was supposed to represent, and the enemies subplot was simply dropped halfway through.

That being said, I still enjoyed it. I wish I could rate it higher, but it’s definitely a story worth reading for the premise alone — as long as you’re willing to overlook the flaws.

The characters are still captivating, and Cezar is without a doubt my favorite.

🇵🇹

Curiosamente, o fast burn não me incomodou.

The dedication of this book says it all: “This is for all the readers who like their men broken, unhinged, and just a few steps over the line…” — and wow, do Nicu, Cezar, and Ion deliver on every bit of that promise. The story plunges us into a haunting scene with Kazia, alone in the night, honoring her mother’s Romani heritage with a ritual at her graveside, unknowingly watched by a tattooed stranger. What follows is a brutal twist of fate as she’s drugged, kidnapped, and wakes to find herself in the company of three men who are as enigmatic as they are dangerous. Cezar — the kidnapper — is an unpredictable blend of menace and devotion. He talks to voices in his head, yet claims Kazia as his Roma and swears to protect her. It shouldn't be comforting… but somehow, it is. His fierce loyalty and surprisingly funny dialogue make him impossible not to love, despite the chaos he brings. Ion, the gruff, emotionally armored middle brother, is a slow burn. Scarred by his past and used for his looks by a manipulative father, he drowns his pain in alcohol, drugs, and apathy. And then there’s Nicu — the eldest, the reluctant leader — carrying the crushing weight of responsibility with a quiet intensity and touch of OCD. Each brother is uniquely broken, and each adds a layer of complexity that keeps you turning the page. Kazia, a psychology graduate, should be equipped to understand the madness unfolding around her, but these men defy every rule in her books. And yet, the longer she’s with them, the more tangled her heart becomes in their fractured lives. All four of these characters have traumatic pasts that will gut you. Their chemistry is off the charts. But this book isn’t just dark, it’s achingly raw, sometimes brutal, and undeniably seductive. Cezar will likely be the fan favorite, with his unwavering devotion to Kazia and wicked sense of humor that offers a spark of levity in the shadows. The other two? Well, it’s a coin toss — love her or kill her, who’s to say? I only wish we got more scenes with all of them together — not a complaint, just a hunger for more of that sizzling, volatile dynamic. And oh, it’s spicy. Like pants-on-fire spicy. What truly sets this book apart though is the infusion of mystical Romani culture — something I haven’t seen before in a mafia romance. It adds a hypnotic edge to the gritty underworld and elevates the whole vibe to something entirely original. This book is not for the faint of heart — it’s for the brave, the curious, and those who like their romance with a generous dose of madness. It’s twisted, it’s haunting, and it grips you until the final, breathless page.

CW: blood, gore, violence, psych0 men (like all the author's books!!)2. Also there is a r@pe attempt (not by the mmc), but the mmcs stop it.
k1nks: degradation (on him), electro play, RH, DVP, bondage, and just lots and lots of spice!

This is a modern/contemporary RH with aspects of Romani magic. There's Kazia (the fmc) and 3 half-brother mmcs: Nicu, Ion, and Cezar. All 4 of them have gone through trauma and end up bonding over it, with Kazia's psych degree coming in handy in understanding them. From the beginning, she’s so strong. She lets herself have one moment to cry and feel pity for herself when she gets kidnapped and then focuses on her survival.
All three siblings have their own methods of dealing with their drama. Nicu, the oldest and mafia heir, deals with his by being cold and showing OCD-like tendencies. Ion, the middle one, numbs himself with women, drugs, and alcohol. Lastly, Cezar, the youngest, appears flat-out crazy with 3 voices in his head that help him while he acts like an enforcer, slaughtering enemies violently. He was definitely my favorite and said the silliest romantic things. For example:

“Did you really, my wild Roma? That gives me spiders in my belly!”
“Do you mean butterflies?”
I noticed a pattern of his for mixing up well-known sayings. He probably didn't remember them.
“Nope.” He popped the P, motioning to his belly with both hands. “It's spiders because this slow crawl of excitement roams around in my belly when I'm around you.” He added his touch of psycho by spreading and curling his fingers over his belly, walking them around like spiders. “Then, every once in a while, you talk to me, and the spiders bite me.” His fingers dig into his abdomen to emphasize the bite. “Then I feel a euphoria as the poison surges through my veins.” His head lifted to the ceiling as he closed his eyes and swayed.”

and...

“Your body is like the sun. I want to devour it with all of my being, but I feel like getting too much will burn me to a cinder." One hand drifted down, rubbing my clit as his thrust grew harder, deeper. "But I don't mind crisping up. The best part of fried chicken is the crispy parts.”

Dirty liars in these reviews. I normally am a generous reviewer, so trust this at least as coming from a level-headed place. This review will also talk about some of the trigger warnings in this book.

Clearly, no editor was involved. I counted 17 grammar mistakes, and that was just starting at the 67% mark after I was exasperated with how many I already came across. I am talking punctuation, tense, spelling, accidental repeats, and more.

The first 45% was a solid read, and kept me enticed enough to finish. But by the 80% mark I was dreading each page, but I've been on a string of DNF'd lately and thought it might redeem itself. Also didn't love that SA and r*pe were talked about so freaking aggressively. The threat was already there. It didn't add anything to the story to have it be CONSTANTLY threatened and in vivid detail. This book was just not written eloquently or with enough depth to warrant that.

The plot summed up is there are three brothers who are raised as mafia heirs. Their father is a major POS who has abused them their whole lives, starting from their conception where you guessed it, he r*ped all of their mothers. They are just basically fucked, and completely traumatized. You got a psycho, a control freak, and an insecure "whore." Then the FMC is of Romani blood and apparently it is like magic? But not a PNR read. Actually felt like it was supposed to be more religious which was weird. Kazia is supposed to be a psych student, and uses her knowledge to do absolutely nothing. Idk there are like no redeeming qualities to this book. The climax was also, you guessed it, basically just SA. Then the "good guys" somehow turn it around within maybe 2 paragraphs and win. That's it. Story over. I couldn't even read the epilogue cause talk about pointless.

I wasn't expecting a masterpiece here, but this is just case in point not a well written book. This might be harsh but I feel very duped by the reviews so someone has to be the voice of reason here.

Veiled Calls at Twilight is a fast-paced, high-heat Reverse Harem read that delivers strongly on its "dark mafia with a mystical twist" premise. Kira Stanley hooks the reader immediately with the intriguing setup: Kazia, haunted by her mother’s Romani rituals, is kidnapped by the Ambros brothers (Cezar, Nicu, and Ion) who are convinced she holds the key to their family’s dark past.

The book is undeniably entertaining. The author excels at writing steamy, intense scenes and perfectly captures the dynamic of the possessive, broken anti-heroes this genre thrives on. Each brother has a distinct archetype-the psycho, the stone-cold leader, and the charmer-which keeps the chemistry varied and the spice level consistently high. If you are looking for a quick, action-packed read with explicit heat and damaged men, this book delivers.

The reason for the 3-star rating, however, comes down to execution and consistency. While the core concept of merging dark mafia tropes with inherited magic is unique, the mystical element felt underdeveloped. It acts more as a convenient plot device to justify the captivity than a genuine world-building thread, leaving the story feeling pulled in two directions.

Furthermore, the pacing rushes through the initial, crucial moments of captivity and emotional trauma. Kazia's transition from an intelligent, self-aware victim to a willing participant felt too abrupt, sacrificing sustained tension for faster relationship progression. The MMCs, while intriguing, sometimes relied too heavily on their assigned archetypes, lacking the internal nuance needed to make their collective brokenness fully resonate.

Overall, it’s a fun, spicy ride that fulfills the basic requirements of a dark RH read, but it misses an opportunity to truly deepen the plot or fully explore the promising mystical themes introduced. Read it for the heat and the chaos, but don’t expect a fully fleshed-out world.

If you're looking for:
Why choose romance
Mafia Romance
Trauma

This story has intrigue, suspense, and touches on themes of the spiritual world of the Romani please check the CW/TW as there are dark themes of childhood trauma, abuse of children (in the past) and other themes that may be difficult for some readers.

Kazia just lost her mom, and in her grief she finds herself reconnecting with her mother's spiritual teachings of their Romani ways. While performing a ritual at her mother's gravesite, she is taken by Cezar, an unhinged, possible schizophrenic psychopath who feels an instant gravitational pull to her. He instantly believes she is to be his wife, and he to be her husband..husband number 1...

Cezar, Ion and Nicu are brothers, and they are the heirs of a faction of the Armenian mafia. They have been sent to the US by their cruel, vile father, to find Margaret Lee (Kazia's mother), only to learn that she has passed away. Instead, they find Kazia - a young, innocent grad student who's been studying psychology and hoping for a peaceful life as she mourns the loss of her mother.

Each brother is plagued by childhood trauma and the violence that continues onto them at the hands of their father. They each have been designed for a purpose within their mafia. and Their father will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

In her captivity with these murderous mafia men, things happen that Kazia struggles with reconciling. Each brother bonds with Kazia in their own way. She is able to connect with each of them in a unique way that meets each other's needs.
Each of them are so different from each other - in fact, they couldn't be more different, but there is beauty in their darkness.

Buckle up, their story takes the reader on quite a ride of emotional turmoil, passion, intrigue, suspense.

Bottom line: loved it!

My Review
.☆。• *₊°。 ✮°。

This was surprisingly good! There is a hint of insta-love from one of the brothers, but I felt like it was done in a good way. The plot is consistent, and although I feel like this had the potential of being a book series, it did wrap up neatly packaged as a standalone.

There are 3 MLS, and they are all brothers. One of the brothers kinda reminded me of this character named "Lorn" in the Beyond the Faerie Gate series. I dropped it, though, because it was stressing me out, but I say all that to say that I saw some similarities between the 2 characters and got excited!

The FL is good, not much of a strong impression was left on her, and I did enjoy how she's not a doormat, but also not overpowered. Like I said earlier, I do wish this could've been a book series because the whole time I'm reading, I was hoping it wouldn't end LOL! We probably could've explored the mafia concept and delved deeper into the dynamics between the brothers and FL, but it's whatever. It's still a HEA for me at least!

So I loved the storyline of this book. It added a little bit of mystery and magic into a very dark storyline. However I do wish the ending was a little more spaced and developed. It felt very rushed within the last 30 pages, wrapping everything into a neat and tidy little bow. Majority of the book was her being held captive by the brothers but also there wasn’t a ton going on when they were together other than her being drugged and f*cked. It was hard to string together the main female character who was supposed to be level headed but still somewhat traumatized with the person who just seemed fine with being the head of a mafia?
I would have leveled to read a little more self exploration of the FMC getting gradually more unhinged on her own rather than being just obsessed with the guys. Additionally we are told that the FMC was. Called a specific name at the beginning by her mom and it meant so much to her, just for her to forget where it came from when the villain said it at the end?

Now on to things I loved -
-The mental illness representation in this book! It was done for the main male characters in a beautiful way that didn’t romanticize their issues but added to their background.

-The FMC had somewhat of a backbone and had an education

-She was in her late 20’s and not a child!

-There was never a doubt the guys were interested in the FMC even though they were assholes at first.

-Diversity representation! It wasn’t a typical Russian/Italian mob book!

𝑚𝑦 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 : ⭐️4/5
𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑟𝑒 : dark romance, reverse harem, mafia

📖 𝑎 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝑠𝑦𝑛𝑜𝑝𝑠𝑖𝑠 :

She ran from her mother’s superstitions—only to be dragged into their dark truth.
When a quiet visit to her mother’s grave turns into captivity, she wakes to find herself chained and surrounded by three dangerous men seeking answers buried in her past. They’re cold, cruel, and cracked wide open. As obsession and danger twist tighter, she realizes freedom might come at the cost of her heart… or her life.

💬 𝑚𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠 :

This book had me in a chokehold from page one—dark, intense, and full of tension you can practically taste. The vibes? So unhinged in the best way. Reverse harem with three morally gray men? Yeah. I was locked in.

Kazia was such a solid lead. Strong but still hurting, rooted in her culture and trying to survive the mess she’s thrown into. And the brothers? Don’t even get me started.

🖤 Cezar is all simmering rage.
🖤 Nicu is the golden boy with a blade behind his back.
🖤 Ion? Yeah… he’s chaos, and I loved every second.

Their bond is complicated as hell—violent, possessive, and a little toxic—but that’s kind of what makes it so good. I ate that up.

Only reason it’s not five stars? The pacing dipped for me at times, and I wanted just a little more fight from Kazia in key moments. Still, the tension, the vibes, the lore—it all slapped.

If you’re into villain men, feral affection, folklore touches, and morally gray chaos wrapped in heat and heartbreak… this one’s for you.

A Hauntingly Addictive Dark Romance

Kira Stanley delivers a gripping and uniquely chilling take on dark romance with Veiled Called at Twilight, blending supernatural intrigue with a deeply psychological edge. From the first page, this story sinks its claws in, pulling readers into a world where obsession, trauma, and fate collide in the most unsettling yet mesmerizing ways.

At the heart of it all is a dangerously possessive, broken man who believes the heroine is his—body, mind, and soul. His fixation is both terrifying and fascinating, a twisted dance of dominance and vulnerability that makes him impossible to look away from. Adding to the tension are his two brothers, each caught between protecting her and destroying her, creating a high-stakes, razor-sharp suspense that keeps you on edge.

The multiple POV structure is one of the novel’s greatest strengths, offering raw, unfiltered insight into the characters’ motivations and darkest desires. While it fully embraces the shadows of the genre, the romance leans more toward psychological tension than outright graphic content, making it an ideal read for those dipping their toes into dark romance.

Stanley’s writing is immersive, her pacing relentless. Every chapter tightens the noose, keeping you breathless as secrets unravel and lines between love and obsession blur. If you crave morally gray characters, mind-twisting suspense, and a touch of the supernatural, Veiled Called at Twilight is a must-read. Prepare to be consumed.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Kazia, Caesar,Ion and Nicu. Kazia has not had a easy life. She has lived though and survived a lot of trauma. Now that she has performed a ritual to honor her mother, she can finally feel a little peaces from knowing she is in a better place. What she never expected though was company. Then the world as she knows it goes black and she wakes up in a bed that most certainly does not belong to her. Arak is a father to three boys, Nicu, Kazia, Cesar and Ion. Arak wanted Kazia's mother but now that he knows she is no longer in this world, he is not happy. You will understand all this when you read the book. I don't want to say anything that will give away the things I can't tell. He might not be happy, but his sons are. Ceaser is really and I do mean really devoted to Kazia and even goes as far as to claim her as his wife. However, he keeps hearing in his head that she is really important to the family. Ion is the grump of the group with no regard for the world. All he cares about is doing what he has to do to get through the day. Nicu is the oldest of the three and has a lot of responsibility. He feels such immense pressure to succeed so he can protect his brothers from their father's schemes. There is so much to love about this book. But, you have to discover it all for yourself. I loved reading this book and you guys will too.

Feeling like a psycho freak...

A thrilling RH dark mafia romance with witchy vibes. This book had me in a chokehold. I couldn't read it fast enough, devouring all the pages. What a wild ride full of suspense, intense spice, and emotions. Check your TW.

Kira Stanley is a new author to me and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read this ARC and review her work. I enjoyed her writing style. I was captivated and addicted by this story and its characters.

I loved the dedication: "This is for all the readers who like their men…broken, unhinged and just a few steps over the line… this book is for you." (I feel so seen.)

Our FMC Kazia she's a baddie. I love how intelligent and self-aware she is.

(MMC) Cezar is the unhinged psycho, the youngest brother. The wild animal was made to be the savage protector of the family.

(MMC) Nicu the level-headed, stone-cold, big brother. The heir to the throne.

(MMC) Ion the charmer, the smooth-talking middle brother. The beautiful face was made to disarm enemies.

My heart ached for these beautiful damaged men. Each of their individual stories was heartbreaking. Their father truly is the worst kind of monster.

The chemistry and banter between each MMC and FMC was perfection. I loved how the relationship with each brother developed into more. She is everything they each need to complete them and they will do anything to keep her safe and make her theirs.

I can't wait to read more work by Kira Stanley.

I like 'em dark. I like 'em spicy. And that's exactly what I got with Kira Stanley's Veiled Calls at Twilight.

MFC Kazia was smart (she was majoring in psychology) but had a wicked temper. At least she has a little common sense that comes with that temper. Kazia was a fighter, she was going to need to be after getting mixed up with the Azadian brothers.

Nicu is the heir, Ion is the face, and Cezar is the executioner. Their father is the leader of the Armenian mafia and pure evil. So the boys are way fudged up; their entire life has been the thing of literal nightmares. Out of the three, Cezar, who is probably clinically insane, was my favorite. I know I love the crazy ones, but (gasp!) he might be my favorite of all time. I adore the crap out of him.

Who loves a good RH mafia story? This girl, but the introduction of the Romani culture made this one. I loved the unexpected mystical aspect. Kira was generous with the details; giving me a greater understanding of the culture. As for the plot, it was good, and the story went by fast. All roads were leading to this ending. There was no other way, but how we got there I thought it a little differently. Nevertheless, it was just as good and just as vicious as I thought it would be. If you're looking for your next dark contemporary read, this is a good one.

I really enjoyed this standalone. Kazia is a great FMC; although there is a mystical element with the her dreams and Romani ancestry, I really liked how grounded Kazia was. She is practical and self aware and her psychology background works well within the story as she helps Cezar, Ion and Nicu throughout the story with their own traumas. The relationship between the brothers is just as important to the story and I enjoyed how the dynamic changed throughout the course of the book as they healed and faced their enemies together.

Nicu is my usual book boyfriend type but Cezar is the one in this book; he is so loveable you can't but fall for him. I'm not an insta love person but I was all in with his connection to Kazia from their first meeting. He definitely has the best one liners and his insistence on First Husband rights made me laugh every time it was mentioned. All these boys will break your heart as their backstories are revealed but Cezar's is the most poignant when the truth is revealed. Although it is a self contained story, I'd love to see more of these characters again!

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

This is my honest review.

Rated: 3.75 stars

This book had all the makings of a standout read-mystery, magic, smut and that delicious reverse harem dynamic-interwoven with 'touch her and die' vibes. And to be fair, there are some strong elements here. The spice was on point. The vibes were dark and dreamy. But as much as I wanted to fall headfirst in this world, something just didn't quite land for me.

I found myself craving more when it came to Kazie-especially her roots and how she connects to the eerie legacy surrounding her family. That history felt like it was waiting to be unearthed, but instead, we stayed mostly at the surface. There was such profound potential in her backstory, and I wish the author had leaned harder into that and given us more formation.

Also, the insta-devotion from Cezar...while I don't always mind it, in this case it just felt too easy that lacked the revelation of a solid linking to who she is. For a book that offered such a haunting setup, I epected more tension, more conflict, more resistance....more plot-expecially given the dark undertones and dreams.

All that being said, it isn't a bad read by any means. The bones of the story itself are there. The spice is there. It is the kind of book I wanted so badly to love. I just wish that the author had spent more time being deliberate putting more meat on those bones for us.

Veiled Calls at Twilight by Kira Stanley is a RH Mafia based story with lots of twists and turns. After Kazia’s mother dies, she is left some instructions (dealing with her mother’s Romani superstitions) and finds herself at her gravesite doing just that when a man stumbles upon her and starts asking her some rather strange questions. Exit stage left and Kazia wakes up to find herself tied to a bed and surrounded by three men: Ceasar, Nicu and Ion, who have been sent by their father to grab Kazia’s mum but now have her instead. Here a tale is weaved of obsessions, superstition and violence.

This was a well written story (with some triggers) and we not only see what Kazia has gone through but also her men who don’t trust her to begin with, but as we see more of their background, we understand where they are coming from. Their father is pure evil in this story but very well written.
There is a lot of action and sexy times in this book, and you’re pretty much thrown into the deep end from the first chapter. Together, all four of them are a force to be reckoned with, especially against the men’s evil father who gets his just desserts in the end! Overall. A good RH mafia read with some dark elements.

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊
