Rowan knows what she must do: Harness her elemental magic, revive a lost titan, and restore the ebbing might of her forest home. But to increase her power, she must ally herself with long-standing enemies, those responsible for her father’s death and the weakening of the woods. And she’s not the only one to face the scant choices of a world at war.
Across the Circle Sea, Marcon prepares for his first deployment as a soldier in the Army of Light, led by the famed Tali Silversword, one of the last remaining elemental champions. They return to Sanctuary, the battleground that claimed his parents’ lives years before.
Alongside Rowan and Marcon, the threads of fate wrap themselves around a dwarf desperate for redemption, an elf searching for his sister, and a nameless spirit witch fighting to survive.
Explore a world of fading elemental magic, secret heroes, and brimming war in this enthralling first-in-series dark fantasy epic with themes of destiny, found family, and inner power.

Ohhh this book had me in my fantasy era and I was LOVING IT!!! You know when you crack open an epic fantasy and immediately go, “ahh yes, I have no idea what’s happening but I trust the author with my whole soul”? That was me for like the first chunk of this book and then suddenly things start coming together and I’m flipping pages like a woman possessed.
The world building? Huge. We’re talking elemental magic, politics, mythology, secret agendas, and like 27 threads slowly weaving together. It’s not the kind of story that hands you all the answers it lets them unravel one layer at a time, and when that moment hits where everything starts clicking? I may have audibly gasped.
The multi-POV added so much depth, and once I figured out who was who and what they were hiding, I got ridiculously attached. I’m already emotionally invested in the hints of found family and possible tension between certain characters (enemies-to-lovers energy? I’m watching you). Honestly, I love when a fantasy makes me work a little for that payoff, because when it lands, it HITS.
If you’re into rich lore, a slow burn of both plot and potential relationships, and that satisfying “ooooh NOW it makes sense” moment, this one is such a good time. It’s ambitious, it’s immersive, and it feels like we’re just getting started I’ll be anxiously awaiting book two. Thanks to the author for the gifted arc.
I read Buried Heroes earlier this year and had a great time with it. So when Beth sent me a message telling me about Phoenix Rising and asking if I was interested, you already know I was down for this. And let me tell you, I was all in for this one.
First up, let's talk world building. Because when it comes to this, Beth knows exactly how to do this. From the different forms of elemental magic, the political intrigue, the different mythos and the secret hidden agendas, there's a lot cooking here. And it smells really good. Once it all starts coming together, it hit the right spot for me and has me eager for more.
This is a multi POV story and each one has their own elements that keeps it flowing well. And from my experience, characters are what Beth does really well. Our FMC Rowan is all about growth, learning and honing her magic to ensure the safety of her home and it's people. Her strength and will to do what she can for her home, even though she's considered a bit of an outcast, makes her a very interesting character. And the hints of her hidden and powerful magic amps that interest up to a whole nother level. Marcon is another main focus here and having read Buried Heroes, I'm embarrassed with how long it took me to go wait a minute!! But besides that, his story gets pretty dark toward the second half of the book. And he truly has some things coming in the next book that I'm really interested in seeing what develops. But honestly, I enjoyed all the characters here and can't to see more of them. Especially Quindythias!
Overall, this is epic fantasy and I really enjoyed my time with this so much. I can't wait to get book 2 in my hands and see where we are heading with the Feather & Flame series!!
Beth Ball has such a distinct storytelling style. It is one that refuses to hold your hand, and I love her for it. This isn’t the kind of fantasy that spells everything out or coddles the reader; instead, you have to lean in, trust the process, and let the threads slowly weave together. And honestly? The payoff is SO worth it.
The world-building here is exceptional as always: vast and layered for sure. New characters sometimes appear without much warning, which at first can feel disorienting, but it’s all part of Ball’s deliberate approach. Eventually, the connections reveal themselves, and that sense of discovery is part of what makes her work so rewarding. It just might not be in this first book.
This is epic fantasy in the truest sense. It is ambitious and atmospheric. It has great characters, a quietly escalating plot, and deepening world-building as you go. If you’re a reader who likes to be fully immersed in a world that feels a little like classic fantasy with a modern (and inclusive) touch, great characters, and a book that will reveal all with a little patience, this is for you.
Thank you so much to the author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
Beth Ball just knows how to write characters who are irresistible to love or hate and this revised version of Phoenix Rising is no exception.
“You carry the wild magic they fear, the heartbeat of Lis- Maen herself. If they cannot control you, they will seek to diminish you instead, precisely the way they have with this land you call home.”
Thank you, Beth Ball for an eARC.
Knowledge is opportunity. Magic is might. For them both, together, there is always a cost.
Right off the top, if you have read the previous version of Phoenix Rising you need to give this one a chance. I could not put it down. There were so many answers I wanted (and not all were answered yet.) Beth's choices of how she laid out the story in this first installment was so intriguing and then in the last act the big picture formed, and I was so impressed. There are many stories and PoVs, and they are all so very important and do interweave in this big beautiful web within this series and Beth's big bookverse as well. Small details that seem meaningless explode like a forming planet later on! This is a masterclass on how to start a series and set up many PoVs and parallel stories without suffering from 1st book syndrome.
Stranger still to have the memory of dried blood from a silent vow crusted along the back of her hand, washed away but still felt. A vow whose parameters she did not know. Yet.
The political intrigue and villainy in this book is so complex and meticulously crafted and maintained. I sometimes wondered if our main villainess knew what she was doing or was just as enraptured by her own zealous beliefs and words as those who supported her position of power. I don't think I have encountered someone quite like her, and I am eagerly awaiting her next appearance as much as our main characters.
The blaze of his eyes froze her breath. No one ever looked at her that way. As though she was something precious he longed to cradle and devour.
Rowan is such a relatable FMC to me, and I am sure to many others who were ever made to feel like an outsider. Her character growth and honing of her magic all to save a home and her people who made her an outcast in the place of her birth was so enjoyable to experience. Her natural protective nature is equally a strength and blind spot for Rowan but it makes her that much more of an interesting and deep character. Her power level and foreshadowed abilities are absolutely terrifying in all the best ways. Beth just so naturally writes powerful and beautiful women who are feminine empowerment on legs. While Rowan has friends and those friendships empower her in other ways she is an elemental storm just waiting to unleash and I am here for every moment of it.
“Whoever did this to you, I hope you’ve uncovered a creative way to dismember them. I have a few ideas if you need suggestions.”
Another aspect of Rowan I am glad Beth did not shy away from is the natural reaction of one who lived in a small community where she was barely tolerated. Rowan is noticing all the lovely people who cross her path of both genders and the feelings that spark within her. The ending did leave me swooning and wondering how Rowan's romantic interests will play out throughout the series. I'm not sure what team I am on since one is so mysterious with motives unknown and the other is most obvious perfect choice and the whole destiny/fate aspect. The other thing I just love so much about Beth's world and her writing is how she so seamlessly includes LGBT+ characters, and it never feels forced. Instead, it feels exactly how it should be natural and apart of the normal for this world. I want to live in this bookverse so much!
“You are magnificent, my sparrow.”
I knew before the halfway mark that the end of this book would leave me wanting book 2 in my hands and the prequel Hexblade only made it worse! I 100% recommend reading Hexblade after book 1 for maximum emotional damage and understanding. There is so much amazing world building in book 1 and Hexblade just builds upon that and some other very interesting events that are briefly mentioned in Phoenix Rising. While you can read any of Beth's series in any order, don't be surprised to find very interesting references and Easter eggs from other series across her bookverse. I would giggle-kick or squeeee every time I found one. If you love the dark fantasy vibes found in Blood & Steel, The Serpent & The Wings of Night or This Vicious Dream, definitely check out Phoenix Rising!

Huge thanks to HiddenHollowBookTours for the ARC!!
Beth Ball is one of my favorite authors. She creates such immersive stories with complex characters. Phoenix Rising is high fantasy perfection! It has all the best fantasy tropes- elemental magic, political intrigue, animal companions and a slow burn romantic subplot. The magic system is super unique and interesting. I love all things Druids and Mages.
The world building is amazing. The descriptions of everything- people, landscapes, buildings, animals- are so vivid and detailed.
I love Rowan. I love Majestyk, Magnolia and Viridian. And I looovvee me some Lucien. I wonder if he might break my heart later on but we’ll just have to see how everything plays out 😂.
The ending is fantastic. It is the absolute perfect balance between wanting more and feeling satisfied with some closure for this part of the story. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
Thank you so much for letting me be a beta reader. I feel so lucky to have gotten to read this early!
Dark, atmospheric. A fantastic start to a new fantasy series. Phoenix Rising hooked me from page one with its rich worldbuilding, fading-magic vibe, and cast full of secrets and shifting loyalties. Rowan and Marcon’s POVs shine, especially as the story grows darker in the second half, my heart truly broke for Marcon…
Expect undead armies, a Magic Academy, Titans and their Champions, magic, fae, daemons, and forbidden power. The tension builds beautifully, and the book ends with interesting cliffhangers! I NEED book two!
A strong, atmospheric opener with huge potential—and yes, there’s now a helpful glossary!
Hello, people! This is the first book in the Feather & Flame series. It is also my first contact with the author's writing and I am thrilled with it. The world building is fantastic. The characters have depth and are multifaceted. The descriptions are vivid and the plot has a special dynamic. Finally, regarding her writing, it is full of imagination, smart, detailed and illustrative. I wish all writers had this passion and sharper eye that Beth Ball has.
Thank you very much to the author and Hidden Hollow Book Tours for the eARC!
WOW!! This story is extremely immersive. So many secrets and everyone has their own agenda. Multiple POVs but mostly POVs from Rowan and Marcon. They all have something in common but do not know it yet. The world this author created is extraordinary.
-You get war with the betrayer goddess who uses the undead as an army. -A possibly corrupt Magic Academy that contains so much craziness. -Titans and Champions of Titans. -Elemental Magic, Druids, Dryads, Elves, Fae, Mages, Daemons and other magical creatures. -Forbidden Magic and Hidden Magic. -Political Corruption And much more.
You don’t know who is friend and who is foe. This story gets very dark during the second half. My heart breaks for Marcon. Story ends on many cliffhangers and I cannot wait for book 2. This is a very in depth world so be ready. UPDATE: The author has provided a glossary.

Thank you to the author for this eARC for review consideration. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Phoenix Rising feels like diving headfirst into a stormy, magic-soaked world where everyone has secrets. This book is packed with big fantasy energy: undead armies marching at the will of a questionable goddess, a magic academy that gives off serious “something is very wrong here” vibes, elemental powers, political scheming, ancient beings, and enough hidden agendas to make you suspicious of every character you meet. The multiple POVs mean the story is constantly shifting, slowly revealing how all these threads might one day collide. Marcon completely stole the show for me. His chapters were raw, emotional, and brutal in the best way. The depiction of war and loss hit hard, and his relationships, with friends, with duty, with himself, gave the story real weight. Rowan’s arc was also compelling, especially as the darkness deepens in the second half and choices become less clear-cut.
Is there a lot going on? Yes. Did it occasionally feel overwhelming early on? Also yes. But that complexity is clearly intentional groundwork for something bigger, and by the end, I was fully invested and eyeing book two with anticipation. If you love dark fantasy with multiple POVs, morally gray characters, slow-burn tension, and a world full of ancient power and looming disaster, Phoenix Rising is a strong, promising start worth diving into. I’ll definitely be back for what comes next. 👀📖🔥
A promising, atmospheric start to a new elemental fantasy series
Phoenix Rising pulled me in right away with its rich worldbuilding and the whole “magic fading from the world” vibe. Rowan’s storyline balancing duty, danger, and some seriously complicated alliances was my favorite, and I loved how the book weaves together multiple characters without giving too much away too soon. The cast feels diverse and textured, each with their own stakes that kept me turning pages.
The pacing can be a bit uneven, especially early on, but once things click, the tension and atmosphere really land. The themes of destiny, found family, and survival add a nice emotional layer without getting heavy handed.
Overall, a strong opener with tons of potential. If you like elemental magic, big sweeping conflicts, and a touch of darkness, this is definitely worth diving into. I’m excited to see where the series goes next!
If you love high fantasy books full of exquisite details, strong characters and beautiful world building, this is the perfect book for you. Beth's writing style is unlike any other l've ever encountered and left me in awe.
I liked the idea of the book. I liked most the characters. But it kind of felt like it jumped around after like 60% of the book had focused on 2 main characters. The author then brought in multiple side stories. Then leaves you hanging.
Phoenix Rising is a dark, immersive start to the Feather and Flame series, and one that truly rewards patience. The early chapters lay heavy groundwork, but once the pieces begin to connect, the payoff is absolutely worth it in the end.
The worldbuilding is layered and deliberate, filled with history, grudges, and fading magic that shape every character and conflict. You are not given the full picture right away, but instead pulled into a living world where small details matter more than you realize. Things that seem insignificant at first slowly reveal their importance, making the experience feel intentional and deeply thought out which I loved!
The story unfolds through multiple POVs, primarily Rowan and Marcon, whose journeys anchor the emotional core of the book. Rowan’s fight to protect her forest and the magic tied to it gives the story its heart, while Marcon’s arc is raw, devastating, and impossible to ignore. His experiences with war, loss, and duty are some of the most emotionally impactful moments in the book. The supporting cast adds even more depth, from those seeking redemption to those hiding secrets, each with their own agenda.
This book does not shy away from darkness. As the story progresses, the tone grows heavier and more brutal, especially in the second half. War, political corruption, forbidden magic, and morally gray choices all collide, creating constant tension where it is hard to tell who can be trusted. The presence of elemental magic, elves, fae, titans, and the champions adds richness without feeling shallow or overused, and the looming threat of a betrayer goddess using the undead raises the stakes even higher.
The pacing starts slower and can feel overwhelming at times, but that complexity is clearly intentional. By the last portion of the book, the story sharpens, delivering emotional blows, revelations, and cliffhangers that leave you desperate for more.
Overall, Phoenix Rising is a thoughtful, atmospheric, and ambitious beginning to a dark fantasy epic. It is in my opinion a complex, emotionally charged, and full of promise start to the series. If you enjoy a good slow-burn fantasy with multiple POVs, deep lore, political intrigue, and a world on the edge of collapse, and don't mind a slow build to the payoff this is absolutely a series worth investing in. I'm certainly looking forward to the next book!
Phoenix Rising is a fast paced book with an original take on the Fae and Phoenix trope. While the story line has strong bones, many POVs, and an interesting ending, the “meat” of the story is missing. A Lot of what draws readers into a story and keeps them wanting more from chapter to chapter is missing from the writing. What I like to call the “emotional connection” in a story line, is missing. The Writer seemed more interested in the history lesson and the plot of the story than the character building. After reading 50% of the book, I still did not have a connection to the main characters, or understand the MMC motivations. The underlying romance between the FMC and the MMC has no build up and there was no connection between the two characters. The timeline is very jumpy and choppy, the story line seemed to jump from scene to scene and after chapter 30 we were all over the place in the timeline. In most epic stories like this, the writer gives bits of the story line and the main characters importance throughout the story, like puzzle pieces. (Instead this writer gave us a very confusing history lesson in the prologue). By giving the reader little important crumbs throughout the story, but each chapter leaving the reader with another question you keep the reader wanting more. The minor characters in the story, (such as Diamens/ Schaeza), needed to be described or explained better. They were a huge part of the FMC story and of the world building, so you were missing a piece of the puzzle. A small suggestion to writers of multiple POVs, is to always put the characters name at the top of the chapter or section where it switches POVs. This will cut down on your readers' confusion. I really wish books like this aren't always set in stone, because if this writer could rewrite this book and add in some of that character building and “emotional meat” I feel readers would connect with her story more, because this has the potential to be a beautiful story.
If you ever wondered what it feels like to be dropped into a high fantasy novel that is absolutely not for the faint of heart… Phoenix Rising said “good luck, babe” and then yeeted me straight into the deep end. This world is huge, the magic is wild and the story hits the ground running without checking whether you packed emotional snacks. I’ll be honest, it took me longer than half the book to find my footing. The character connections only started clicking after the eighty percent mark, which is the literary equivalent of finally spotting the exit in a maze you’ve been wandering for days.
I was dangerously close to throwing my towel into the ring and calling this one a DNF. Confused, mildly overwhelmed and wondering if maybe I just wasn’t built for this much worldbuilding before lunch. And then everything shifted. Our main girlie Rowan suddenly gets whisked off to a magical academy. I blinked, reread the page and had a full “wait… since when are we in a dark academia storyline?” moment.
But even bigger plot twist: that’s exactly where things got interesting!! Because that’s where this mysterious shadow daddy shows up. And the moment he stepped onto the page, my curiosity perked up like a gremlin hearing someone open a bag of snacks. He had that brooding, dangerous energy that immediately makes you sit up straighter and go “oh… oh I need to know more.” He basically dragged me through the rest of the book by sheer force of intrigue.
And here’s the thing. Even though the journey to get there was longer than expected, you can consider me invested. The world feels like it’s only beginning to open up, the plot is gearing toward something epic and the final chapters made everything snap into place just enough to hook me for the next installment. So yes, this one made me work for it, but now I’m genuinely excited to see where this epic, element-fueled quest goes next!!
Can a book be both Throne of Glass coded, with a splash of Lord of the Rings as well? I would argue yes, and that’s because I finished Phoenix Rising, and I was actually telling my husband about all the parts that reminded me of Lord of the Rings and how it felt like it had the epic fantasy world of Throne of Glass. I *loved* this book. So. Much!
Phoenix Rising by Beth Ball follows a few different characters: Rowan, Marcon and (towards the end) Quindythias. There is a lot I would like to say about this, but I don’t want to give anything away! The story has such an intriguing magic system, each character has a well-fleshed-out past, so you really get a feeling of what they’re going through and why they are the way they are. When I say this left me wanting more, I mean it had me turning to my husband saying, “well, darn it, now I have to wait a year to find out what happens next!” It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger… it’s not an extreme one, but you will definitely be wanting more! And while it’s a larger book, no part of the story felt either too slow or too rushed for me - the pacing was fantastic with keeping me engaged and excited. I cannot wait for the next book to find out what happens next for these characters, and to learn more about this world Beth Ball has created!
(I will say, the author has another series in the same world that’s already published, so I will be diving to that one in 2026!)
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars Spice: a couple very short, mild scenes, nothing incredibly graphic.
Let me start with this - I haven’t found a Beth Ball book that I haven’t just absolutely loved yet. And that remains true with Phoenix Rising!
Y’all. This book!
Beth’s writing and storytelling are both so top tier for me. Her world building is rich and immersive, and all of her stories are so full of lore. And she did not disappoint on any of these fronts with Phoenix Rising! We got all of the above in this epic fantasy plus elemental magic, all the political intrigue, adorable animal companions, found family, destiny/fate, chosen one, hidden identity, he meets her in his dreams, enemies to lovers, slow burn, and so much more!
And on top of that, we get multiple POVs. I’m a sucker for multiple POVs, and I’ll happily take as many as you’ll give me. Especially when it’s done as well as Beth manages to do it! I absolutely love the way she introduces seemingly random new characters out of nowhere and then effortlessly weaves them into the storyline. It adds so much depth to the characters and the overall story, and it’s so satisfying to get to those “ah-ha” moments when everything finally clicks into place.
I wish I could live in these worlds Beth has created with her words. Alas, since I cannot, I’ll settle for the next best thing and read the prequel to Phoenix Rising - Hexblade.
Thank you again so much to Beth Ball and Hidden Hollow Book Tours for the gifted copy of this masterpiece! 🐦🔥⚔️✨💚
Phoenix Rising is a dense, shadow-soaked fantasy that pulls you into a world where hope is dying and power comes at a steep cost. From the start, the atmosphere is heavy with decay—abandoned gods, fractured alliances, and magic that feels more dangerous than divine. The story unfolds through multiple perspectives, slowly revealing how each character is bound to the same looming catastrophe, even when they don’t yet realize it.
Marcon’s chapters were especially striking, filled with emotional weight, brutality, and the kind of inner conflict that lingers long after you turn the page. His journey through war, loss, and responsibility gives the story much of its emotional core. Rowan’s arc is quieter but no less powerful, marked by destiny, buried truths, and the slow awakening of something ancient within her. The magic academy, layered with secrecy and corruption, adds an unsettling tension that makes every interaction feel loaded.
This is not a light or simple fantasy—it demands attention and patience—but the payoff is worth it. By the end, the world feels vast, dangerous, and primed for upheaval. With unresolved threads and a closing that leaves more questions than answers, Phoenix Rising sets the stage for a much larger, darker saga.
This was my first time reading a book by Beth Ball, and I was immediately intrigued. I loved the multi-POV structure and the secrets each character has. The world and plot are complex and layered, sometimes a little overwhelming to track, but the payoff is absolutely worth it.
The political intrigue is tense and thoughtfully crafted, with antagonistic forces driven by belief and power rather than simple villainy. Rowan is a compelling FMC who is deeply relatable, emotionally complex, and powerful in ways that are both awe-inspiring and a little terrifying. Beth writes strong, feminine women so effortlessly, and Rowan fits perfectly into that legacy.
I also loved how naturally relationships and attraction are handled. The romantic tension is slow-burning and engaging, and the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters feels seamless and authentic. The world-building is immersive, with subtle connections and Easter eggs that readers will appreciate.
If you love dark fantasy with found family, powerful magic, and characters that stay with you, Phoenix Rising is for you. I am excited for the next book to help with some of these intense cliff hangers.
This was my first book by Beth Ball and I am interested to read more. I received this from MTMC as a review copy and am glad to share my 2¢ on this fun, but dense read.
Phoenix Rising provides a deeply layered plot in an expansive world from over five points of view. This isn’t a book that you can read in a sitting, and I read it in small bites over a few weeks.
I really enjoyed the political dynamics that controlled the magical elements of the story. Rowan is an incredible main character, my favorite in this story, and she captured my heart. Her position as a Druid, and her original forest enclave, was what drew me into the story.
I also love magical creatures - give me a dragon, a mermaid, a phoenix, etc. and I’m yours! Phoenix Rising delivers on that. There is magic and lore woven into every scene of this book. Sometimes it felt a little tightly packed, but it was definitely entertaining!
There were moments where I felt the POV shifts were a little abrupt and it was hard to keep track. On the other hand the scope of this story really supports the broad cast of characters. It’s a lot of information to absorb and would be difficult to convey through only one or two perspectives.
My only “gripe” with this one is that I think it packs too much into the first book.
There is a lot going on in this story so it took me some time to feel comfortable in the world, but once I did I really started to enjoy myself. There are a lot of characters and multiple POVs scattered across many different locations. There is also quite a bit lore and backstory to learn about. I did enjoy the writing style and the world the story takes place in is very intriguing. Lots of great fantasy and magical vibes but also a little sci-fi feel as well.
My favorite character to read about was Marcon. His story line just really drew me in. I love the bond he has with his friends, and while he is not a perfect person, he had some great character growth throughout the story. I will be very curious to see how his story might connect with Rowan’s in the next book.
This book did a great job of setting up for the next book. We got to know the major characters and side characters and learned a bit of the history of Eldura. The storylines were interesting enough to make me want to find out what happens next but didn’t end on too big of a cliffhanger. I look forward to continuing this journey!
I received an ARC of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Phoenix Rising felt like The Witcher, Game of Thrones, and Throne of Glass got together and made a book baby. Dark, epic, a little chaotic, and absolutely dripping with potential.
We’ve got: ✨ an army of the undead unleashing devastation ✨ a rebellious elf honing her elemental magic at an academy that feels… wrong ✨ an outcast witch trying to understand her legacy ✨ a heartbroken brother destined for politics (but maybe he wants another path 👀) ✨ and a soldier torn cleanly between obedience and doing what’s right
There is a lot happening, with every chapter shifting POV and laying the groundwork for each character’s arc. But the world building? Rich. Vivid. Immersive. Marcon’s chapters in particular hit me hard. The horrors of war are so stark and haunting that they stayed with me long after I’d turned the page.
If you’re the kind of reader who lives for sprawling fantasy worlds, tangled politics, and multiple character threads slowly weaving together, this one might be for you.
I’m genuinely excited to see what happens when all these characters finally collide.
This is the first book in a dark fantasy series. The story opens twenty years ago with the fall of Sanctuary, where we meet Tali Silversword, one of the last remaining light champions. Then we jump ahead to the present and meet Rowan, our FMC, who is bonded to a Phoenix, something known only to her father and mentor.
Rowan knows that she’s supposed to be the savior, but to save her world she must learn all elemental magic and revive the lost titan she’s tied too. She has to keep her secret hidden from everyone at the Academy, especially the Five Faces of the Pentacle.
Then we meet Marcon, who leaves behind the woman he once loved for a shot at glory on the battlefield. He wants recognition and the chance to be a hero, but when he finally confronts the enemy in battle, it isn’t as glorious as he thought.
This book is filled with secrets, danger, and mystery, and you’re never completely who can be trusted. It does end on a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Phoenix Rising is the first book in the Feather & Flame series by Beth Ball, published in December 2025 by Grove Guardian Press. It is a sweeping dark fantasy epic that blends elemental magic, layered worldbuilding, political intrigue, and a slow burn enemies to lovers.
Phoenix Rising follows Rowan, who must harness her power and form uneasy alliances to protect her home, and Marcon, a soldier whose personal losses drive him into a larger conflict. Along their journeys are dwarves seeking redemption, elves searching for lost kin, and a cast of characters bound by destiny, hidden agendas, and the threat of annihilation.
While I liked this story in the beginning, I stopped reading about 60% in. The multiple perspectives and pacing became a bit overwhelming. The story was busy and dense before it clicks into rhythm. By the time it slowed down, I felt confused and couldn’t connect with any of the characters.
This will be great for lovers of complex, high epic fantasy world building with a simmering slow burn romance.
Rowan can’t believe that she is all alone after her father’s death and she knows that she has to be strong now. She is like no other and others will do everything in their power to own her. Just when she thinks that she is free she meets a soldier Macron as they share a gift. But everything changes that night as they are part of each other and they call to each other. After many years they meet up again but everything has changed Rowan has her full powers and the Phoenix is waiting for it’s moment. Macron has longed for her and he will do whatever he has to save the woman that he loves. But how can they win this next battle? The enemy is stronger than before and they will stop at nothing to make Rowan pay. A good interesting read. Two people find their other half but they keep on being separated by powerful forces. Will they get the ending that they deserve? Thank you to Beth for the copy. This is my voluntary review.
"Knowledge is opportunity. Magic is might. For them both, together, there is always a cost."
Phoenix Rising is book 1 in the Feather & Flame series from Beth Ball. Be prepared to strap in for the ride, because there is a lot going on here - elemental magic, politics, mythology, secret agendas, hidden identities, complex world-building and a slow burn, enemies to lovers trope running throughout.
What To Expect:
❣️MF romantasy ❣️Multi-POV ❣️Dark academia vibes ❣️Found family ❣️Enemies to lovers ❣️Slow burn ❣️Forced proximity ❣️Hidden identity ❣️Elemental magic ❣️First book in the series
I read PHOENIX RISING by Beth Ball for the review tour hosted by the author and Hidden Hollow Book Tours. Thank you to both for inviting me along and for the gifted e-arc! This book is so good!
I haven't wanted to do anything else but read this book for three days. It is intense, fast-moving, emotional, and addictive. The battle scenes are heart-pounding. I felt like I was there.
The worldbuilding is fantastic. I love the characters and the creatures. And, you know me, if there's an enemies-to-lovers storyline, I'm in, especially if it's slow-burn.
There are twists and turns, betrayals and surprises. I also love a story with a good magic system, especially when hidden magic is involved. We see our MCs, Rowan and Macron, come fully into their own power.
The cliffhangers had me screaming for book 2! I highly recommend PHOENIX RISING to fans of epic fantasy, epic romantasy, high tension, emotional scenes, enemies-to-lovers, slow-burn romance, and fantastic worldbuilding.
Wow, wow! I got so immersed in this world, and Beth did an incredible job with the world building. As the first in the series, I am looking forward to continuing this story.
The elemental magic, the banter, the lyrical descriptions - it all drew me in. This was quite a different magic system than I am used to, and it was very well done. I loved all of the druid magic!
The battle to retake Sanctuary was so well written that I could not put it down. The ingenuity of the characters was fantastic! The story is fast-paced, so stay on your toes; you don't want to miss anything. There are so many intertwining elements that I definitely had to trust the process - and it paid off.
The multi-POV aspect was a great way to see those threads slowly intertwining. This is a true epic fantasy, and I have no doubt the second book will continue to put all the puzzle pieces together.
Thank you so much to Beth Ball and Hidden Hollow Book Tours for the eARC. My opinions are my own.
