On the beautiful beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, a group of young men who call themselves the Hammerhead Gang create the Shark List, a file of people who commit civil wrong doings and sometimes criminal acts. Their motive? To seek punishment for these unruly citizens. Typically, punishment is either humorous or embarrassing for the perpetrators. However, when the Hammerhead Gang discovers a serial killer in their midst, they decide to stop him. Prior to turning evidence over to the police, they plan a heist to steal the killer's wealth. From the beautiful beaches of Florida to the rural woods of Mississippi and all the way to the Virgin Islands, The Shark List explores romance, adventure, and the unconditional loyalty of the Hammerhead Gang.
Trigger warnings: child rape (not in detail), child murder (not in detail)
I'm including the trigger warnings since I was unable to find them anywhere, and as a mom with a toddler I wish I had been warned that there was child rape in this book. Although not depicted on page, it is still a rough topic to read about and it is mentioned quite a few times. If I had known, I possibly would have passed this book up.
According to NetGalley, this book is supposed to be "adult fiction" and "mystery and thriller"...I'm not sure I would classify it as any sort of mystery/thriller. All of the characters are laid out in front of you with no mystery as to who will end up on the infamous "shark list"; if you've wronged the Hammerhead Gang or the society any in way, you can guarantee your name is on that list. In fact, we know exactly when someone is added and why. There is no mystery.
As for the characters, they're supposed to be somewhere between mid-late twenties (post high school/in college) and their maturity level is abysmal. They act like they're still in high school. One of the characters mentions he feels like he has "peaked" in life....and by his actions, I would almost say this is a fact.
On a few occasions, it is mentioned that they have girlfriends "at home" but their actions make it seem like they don't truly care about them, they are constantly partying and after the "ladies" on the beach and John-Boy is constantly depicted with a different girl (although there are no explicit sex scenes in this book, it is alluded to multiple times for his character). This makes it seem like the author almost forgot about the fact these boys are supposed to have significant others that have been previously mentioned.
The main plot line of the book (the serial killer) feels rather rushed and disjointed at times. We don't actually meet him until about 20-30% into the book which I think is rather late considering how short the book is. Also during this time in the book, the boys act more like knock-off vigilante batman than anything else.
Unfortunately I can't think of any of my friends that I could recommend this book to, but perhaps some high school guys that think they are invincible and like to play by their on rules would enjoy this one.
I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book before it is published.
A unique, fast paced thriller centred around 5 young men from Panhandle Florida who by association (and through their leader Creigh) became know as "The Hammerhead Gang". This group of handsome, talented young men (having won championships in their young lives) took it upon themselves to bring wrongdoers to justice. However one night they meet an older couple called Kent and Kim- and unbeknownst to them this encounter ends up altering their lives forever. The story was enjoyable with a cliffhanger that I never saw coming but had me wondering as to what would happen next for the men- a clever ending by the author.

THE SHARK LIST - Definitely an entertaining, interesting, and intriguing story. Good characters and interesting story lines filled with different and unpredictable stuff. A quick, flowing read but I did not like the way the Epilogue was written. Apparently, there's more to come. Source: Netgalley. 4*
A modern-day John D McDonald. I'm glad I never made it on The Shark List. I played sports against the Hammerheads in high school, and as their gym was older than ours, it was easier to break into the summer of 1979, we practiced in their gym more than they did. Late at night, we'd jimmy that front door bar lock and hoop it up all night. Changing out their rooster with ours, by the scoreboard was just one of our "should of been" on The Shark List actions. Great work, Clay!
An enjoyable read. The Shark List, by Clay Peacher, is the story of a group of high-school, and college, friends who grew up in the Florida panhandle, and called themselves the Hammerhead Gang. Living fast and loose and lamenting about days gone by, they pass their time, not only shark fishing, but involving themselves in a series of Gulf Coast adventures. But just do not leave it there, as readers will see. The suspense builds as the plot unfolds. A delightful book for a summer vacation.
