love this series! The world Sutton has made is such a fun balance of human and fae, of how magic and academics work together. The first book gives off Mummy vibes, but this second book is giving more of what I would call Victorian Indiana Jones. This setting is completely different from the first book but the pacing is still on point. The story still envelopes you without feeling like a huge emotional commitment, like some other series. This could also be read as a standalone if you wanted; the book stands well on its own, but also pushes Sutton's story forward. and I definitely need to find an Arthur Griffin in my life.

„Legends Carved in Stone“ von Clara Sutton ist der zweite Band der „A World of Lost Magic“-Reihe. Diesmal geht es um ein Statuen-Fragment mit der Schrift einer verlorenen Sprache, dass Etta von Claremont in ein neues Abenteuer zieht. Erschienen ist der Fantasy-Roman im März bei Lonely Fox Press.
Eigentlich dachte Etta von Claremon, dass bei dieser Ausgrabungsstätte im Norden nicht viel Spannendes passieren kann. Doch dann wird ein Stück einer Statue gefunden und diese enthält Schriftzeichen einer lange verschollenen Sprache. Kurz nach dieser Entdeckung verschwindet der Expeditionsleiter Dr. Everett. Schnell wird klar, dass dies mit dem Fragment zusammenhängt. Und dann taucht auch noch ein alter Bekannter auf - Arthur Griffin. Gemeinsam machen sich Etta und Arthur auf die Suche nach Dr. Everett und entdecken ein noch viel größeres Geheimnis.
Auch der zweite Teil dieser Reihe hat mir gut gefallen. Ich habe schnell in die Geschichte gefunden. Hierzu trägt sicherlich auch der gleiche Aufbau wie im Vorgängerband zu bei. Es gibt kurze Kapitel, die Fußnoten sowie Zeitungsauschnitte enthalten, die die Welt erklären und oft auch etwas über die Vergangenheit verraten.
Es ist wieder eine Mischung aus Sprache, Rätsel und Verfolgungsjagd. Der Spannungsbogen steigert sich kontinuierlich und ich fühlte mich die meiste Zeit gut unterhalten. Es ist ein typischer Abenteuerroman, bei dem man genau das bekommt, was man erwartet.
Die Protagonisten Etta und Arthur mochte ich sehr. Etta hat sich in der Hinsicht verändert, dass sie die Ereignisse aus dem ersten Band ein bisschen vorsichtiger haben werden lassen. Sie ist etwas misstrauischer was Menschen betrifft und dennoch neigt sie in ihrer Neugier dazu, unbedacht zu handeln und sich so in Gefahr zu bringen. Arthur bleibt weiterhin sympathisch, wenn auch manchmal etwas distanziert. Ich mochte die Spannung zwischen ihm und Etta und habe mich sehr gefreut, ihn in diesem Band näher kennenzulernen.
Die Welt, in der dieser Roman spielt, finde ich faszinierend. Es gibt Menschen, Trolle, Elfen und Fae und diese Welt hatte in der Vergangenheit einmal Magie. Die Autorin hat sehr viel Aufwand auf eine reiche Vergangenheit verwendet, so dass man diese Welt gerne auch mal mit seiner Magie erleben würde. Dennoch ist es auch spannend, diese anhand von Ausgrabungen und den dadurch entstehenden Abenteuern zu erleben.
Die Geschichte in diesem Buch ist abgeschlossen, dennoch lässt das Ende des Buches die Möglichkeit für weitere Abenteuer offen. Ich bin gespannt, ob und wann ich weitere Bücher dieser Reihe entdecken werde.

3.5 stars! I really enjoyed the second installment of this series. The storyline flows more smoothly, fewer areas were rushed and there's more character development and world building here.
Legends does not read as well as the other fantasy books out there but its a great quick read, with a fun main character and an interesting sprinkling of notes, letters, newspaper articles and footnotes to provide interest throughout.
I also liked the ending that leaves an opening for the next installment to continue and the cute romance blossoming between the main protagonists.
I've been in a reading slump this year and this series helped me out of it with a fun archaeology fantasy story that took me back to my own uni days as an archaeology student.

I loved the continuation of this world from the previous book, this was truly such a fun world to immerse myself in. A few publishing mistakes but nothing that affected how I was able to read the book. If you love magic and adventure (and a little teeny romance) this would be a fun read.

Archeology? Love. Gaslamp fantasy world with a sprinkle of magic? Love. Plucky young heroine? Love. Now we get the Fae in this book? Love! I have other things I should be doing, but instead I’m going right into the next book and nothing can stop me.

Etta and Arthur are my favorite forever. I find their chemistry and delightful awkwardness so palpable! As always, Sutton crafts such a distinct and delightful world. Already pre-ordered book 3.
