A gripping and lushly illustrated tale of love and lies set between 1930s Chicago and New York’s criminal underworld, perfect for fans of manga like Banana Fish and readers of graphic novels like Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me who are looking for adult LGBTQIA+ fiction

Chicago, 1930. Jules Tivoli is a penniless Italian immigrant doing odd jobs to make ends meet. A twist of fate causes him to cross paths with Adam, a kingpin in Chicago’s criminal underworld who sees something in Jules that nobody else does—something special.

Under Adam’s wing, Jules becomes somebody and falls in love hard with the man who made him. But after an FBI crackdown, Adam and Jules must flee to New York to escape being caught in the ensuing chaos.

In New York, Jules’s Italian heritage gains him access, recognition, and power in the Cosa Nostra crime family. As he becomes more important in a city where Adam can’t seem to catch a break, he meets Eufrasio—his handsome, violent, and ambitious new partner who insists that Adam is holding Jules back. But Jules would be nothing without Adam—wouldn’t he?

Torn between his past and his future, a sudden betrayal forces Jules to find a way to protect his love and prove his loyalty—if he can even manage to make it out alive.

to have the galaxy level brain to create a 1950s italian-polish new york mafia yaoi so compelling and to then turn it around on its head and reveal such a heart-breaking, nauseating story about grief and guilt and abuse and have it end on such a thematically perfect note, à la fois bittersweet et satisfying regarding jules’ story…… and still making me feel like i gotta end it all. anaïs flogny merci pour tout

wow wow wow such an elegant art style for such a brutal story—and perfectly so? Externally polished characters who are so precariously perched amidst the struggle for power and recognition, they’ll destroy themselves and each other just to keep their seat at the big boy table.

God also obsessed with the hands and how intentionally they’re drawn. The gestures are as good as dialogue—reading their hands is mesmerizing.

I really thought I was going to love this but I kinda struggled to connect to any of it... It builds on your typical 20th century American gangster story, but add some gayness to the mix. A young Italian boy named Jules meets a much older Polish mafia boss who decides to take him under his wing, and takes him as his lover. Over the course of the following decades, we follow their relationships as power dynamics shift and Jules flourishes in his newfound role. It sticks to the tropes while deconstructing the machismo that often comes with the genre. The more I write about it, the more I think it's actually pretty great haha, but felt very little while reading it. Anaïs Flogny's art is gorgeous though, I'll give her that

Edit: Just gave this one a reread since the author announced she was releasing a pre-sequel this fall. I might still like the concept (think Godfather but make it gay) more than the actual execution. It does a pretty good job of playing into the tropes while deconstructing them, I just struggle to really connect to the characters, despite following their ups and downs over the course of almost two decades. Maybe the added context of the follow up will make me care more ! Still not big on the whole age gap romance though, but it does play into the themes the book tries to tackle so I guess that's fair play. Love her art though, very lush and lively

I loved everything about this. The illustrations were to die for, the story had me in a vice grip, the characters were so complex and compelling... The dynamics were just chef's kiss too.
I love myself a gangster story and this delivered in the best way possible. I also really appreciated how the mafia was portrayed here – there was no romanticisation, but I could still enjoy myself as I followed Jules' ascent.
Absolutely loved the bits in Italian.
Anyone who knows a romance language should read this. Hell, even if you don't, buy the book and use Google translate or something. Just read it

This broke me, but it was amazing. I love the art style and the color palette and just everything about the layout. Watching Jules' situation get progressively worse was hard to swallow, but I should've known that a prohibition era, mafia love story was going to be heartbreaking.

Toxic yaoi final boss

PRAISE:
Illustration and story was to die for. I adored the reversal of power dynamics that happened towards the end. I really liked the scenes with the beach. "I killed Eufrasio. You killed Giulano."

CRITICISMS:
I don't know how to feel on the ending. While it felt like the most logical ending, it didn't make me feel too sastified? I am not sure how I would have preferred it to end, however, and who am I tell to tell an author how to end THEIR story? I (personally) did not find the ending sastifying. It is neither happy or sad, neither good or bad. Just an ending, in my opinion.

TL;DR: Great illustraions, great story, meh ending (imo)

i started reading for the pathetic man but i KEPT reading for the evil little guy. jules is awful, adam is the worst, and together they’re simply terrible! it’s awesome! and doooon’t even get me started on the flip in their power dynamic…plus the colors??? literally scrumptious. i even kinda liked the mafia stuff just for how messy it is. i had so much fun with this, thanks bindi for the rec<3

the art was gorgeous, but i was extremely misled by the video i saw recommending this book lmao.
i thought the story was great, but i also like my yaoi a little more tender and less fucking heartbreaking. dont read this if youre expecting everything to turn out great, do read it if you like being beaten over the head and eviscerated.

* Les personnages *

* L'univers *

* L'objet livre *

* Conclusion *

* Recommandation *
