Animators Sequoia Blankenship and Rob Thompson deliver a madcap adventure through Hollywood as Feo, a down-on-his-luck chupacabra, must transform into a famous movie monster to save his hometown
When the tiny Mexican town of Cabrito Viejo is in danger of being bought out by a nefarious film studio, Feo, the mythical but feisty chupacabra, teams up with Camila, a plucky mechanic and local monster enthusiast to hatch a plan to save their home. Inspired by her father’s collection of monster movies, the pair head to Hollywood to convince famed screenwriter Doctor Acula to put Feo’s name up in lights. But Feo isn’t exactly the terrifying fiend that local legends make him out to be. Can the unlikely duo really save the village by making the chupacabra Hollywood’s next great monster?
This heartfelt debut graphic novel from two seasoned animators is a funny, fast-paced adventure about the power of friendship and the importance of believing in yourself.
A really fun middle grade graphic novel debut about monsters, an unlikely friendship and classic horror movies. I loved the cast of latine characters, the old world Hollywood vibes and the fantastic artwork! This was a really entertaining read that I'd highly recommend for fans of the Adam Sandler Hotel Transylvania movies.
Feo the Chupacabra is a delightful story full of heart and humor with some harrowing moments! The journey is full of action peppered with some tender moments between characters as their friendship blossoms. The story has elements of mystery and suspense and surprises. The colorful characters are all so endearing (except for one - read it to understand who and why!) and the story is a true ride. The writing and illustrations are captivating, immersing you in that world. Don't let the age recommendation stop any adults from reading this book. It is a fun, feel-good experience for everyone!
This debut graphic novel by Sequoia Blankenship and Rob Thompson is hopefully just the first of many more exciting and charming books to come!
I can't recommend this book highly enough! It's a heartwarming, laugh out loud, action packed adventure that the whole family will love from beginning to end. Sequoia's razor sharp wit and unforgettable dialogue bring every character to life, making them feel authentic and relatable. Rob's artwork is absolutely stunning, bursting with vibrant colors and a charming Disney inspired style that leaps off the page. Every panel is packed with personality and energy. Do yourself a favor and grab this book now!
What a great read! "Feo the Chupacabra" tells the story of a young mechanic who teams up with a chupacabra to save their town by filming a creature feature. It's about unlikely friendships, all told through the lens of 1950s era B-monster movies. Along the way, they cross paths with a mummy, a vampire, and a Frankenstein monster - but each with a twist. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, which builds to a stellar third act and ending. The art is absolutely gorgeously rendered. Every single page felt like a painting. I can't wait to see more!
What a wonderful book! Having watched the old Abbot and Costello movies, I enjoyed seeing the format in a graphic novel. I took my time reading it, so I could study both the artwork and the narrative. For me, it has appeal for both adults and children. I can’t wait for Feo’s next encounter…and hopefully an appearance on the big screen as a movie!
PLEASE continue Feo as a series! And hopefully PIXAR makes this book into a movie-this is what I kept thinking during the entire book! It’s so good I couldn’t stop turning pages. I know Feo needs to find another adventure because I want book 2! I am a former second grade teacher and I have worked in the children’s section of our local library-this book would never be on the shelf-it would always be checked out with a waitlist! Such adorable characters and the story was so original and funny!! Please write more Mr. Blankenship
Absolutely loved Feo! From the beautiful illustrations to the quirky, lovable characters to the super fun, engaging story- it honestly feels like a whole movie is packed between the pages of this book.
I planned to read this over a weekend, but once I started, I couldn’t put it down & ended up finishing it in one sitting. There were so many little moments that had me smiling the whole way through, and now I have several favorite panels saved to my camera roll!
I also really appreciated how the story keeps things light & fun without losing its heart.
Overall, just a really fun read from start to finish. Definitely recommend!
Feo the Chupacabra is a beautifully written and illustrated graphic novel that was engaging from beginning to end. Can we talk about how awesome the illustrations are? The artwork is absolutely fantastic, full of personality, detail, and energy, and it brings the story and characters to life on every page.
The story is full of twists and turns that kept us wanting to read just one more chapter to see what would happen next.
My 7 year old loved it as well. His favorite part was all of the different monsters throughout the story, and reading together quickly became his favorite thing to do after school. The combination of a fun adventure, memorable characters, and incredible artwork kept both of us invested the entire time.
This is a heartwarming and entertaining graphic novel that I would highly recommend for young readers and families looking for a story they can enjoy together.
Feo was such a fun read! It was my son's first graphic novel, and he was so engaged that we read it together every night (and sometimes at breakfast). The artwork and writing complement each other perfectly. The images are SO beautifully crafted, and that's what initially grabbed my attention in scanning the pages. But the writing is equally impressive - the humor is witty and the characters are unique, and you can feel that a rich backstory was developed, making this an overall immersive experience. Excellent work from Rob and Sequoia.
This felt like a movie! The artwork and color direction are wonderfully expressive. It’s also funny. I thought the story was magical and whimsical, and it has something for young monster fans as well.
You’ll have to have some suspension of belief because 1950s USA was not that accepting to the point where a Black man could direct a Hollywood blockbuster, and I missed the point when the main characters became best friends, so I was left reeling at the grand proclamations of friendship. Feo and Camila had a great dynamic despite the short time they had together.
It made me laugh out loud - a perfect graphic novel for those who love silly stories with a lovable main character and an interesting cast of classic movie monsters. I loved the mix of Spanish, Mexican folklore, humor, and good storytelling. It read almost like a movie but in the best way possible.
Feo the Chupacabra is a wonderful graphic novel with tons of heart, humor and personality. The characters are incredibly likable, the artwork is gorgeous, and the the story strikes a great balance between laugh-out-loud moments and genuine emotion. It feels cinematic, with beautiful visual storytelling and a heartfelt message about friendship, family and finding where you belong. Highly recommend.
I've been obsessed with this adorable green dog the moment I saw him, and I'm super excited to finally enjoy his adventure!! Sequoia and Rob are super talented artists and every single panel is a masterpiece. The writing is super charming and funny, and I can't wait to see where it goes - and what other adventures this doggo will have! <3
This book has everything a reader would want. Gorgeous art, fun story, and a great sense of adventure throughout. I had lots of fun following the story of Feo and Camila, and I find myself not being able to put the book down. I would recommend it to anybody looking for a fun and thrilling ride with a cute infamous monster.
The story will draw you in, the humor and beautiful art expand on the already enthralling story. Without spoiling anything, if you’re a horror fan this will be all the more fun! We loved taking turns reading this as a family.
First class illustrations and blocking. Feo steals every scene because he is super expressive & endearing. I loved him. 💚 The pacing and dialogue dragged for me in a couple places, and I thought the story could have been a little tighter, but overall a great younger middle school graphic novel.
When the tiny Mexican town Camila lives in is in danger of being purchased and its residents turned out of their homes--who will save it? Camila will. With the help of a slightly self-absorbed Chupacabra, whom she has christened "feo". Silly, good fun.
A very cute, fun middle school graphic novel! I love the illustrations. Bright and colorful. A wonderful friendship between a girl and a monster, a chupacabra. She names it Feo. Feo is hilarious.
The artwork here is spectacular, and the characters are likable, but the plot seemed to get more convoluted by the page. I suspect the younger set will enjoy this one far more than I did, however.
Such a great book! The story is super fun and incredibly imaginative. There’s really nothing else out there like it. And the art is beyond gorgeous! A great summer time read for all ages
(Actual rating: 4.25 stars) I accidentally got in the habit of reading a bunch of graphic novels without reviewing them. This review will have to suffice until I get caught up.
