9 books31 followersAndrea MacPherson, poet and novelist, is the author of six books: three novels, What We Once Believed, Beyond the Blue, and When She Was Electric, and three poetry collections, Ellipses, Away, and Natural Disasters. Her poetry has been anthologized in the UK publication, How the Light Gets In.
When She Was Electric was listed No. 6 on CBC Canada Reads: People’s Choice; Natural Disasters was longlisted for the 2008 ReLit Awards. Andrea holds an MFA from the Creative Writing Department at the University of British Columbia, where she was Editor of Prism International. She has also acted as the Reviews Editor for Event Magazine. She teaches Creative Writing and Literature at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Towards the end of the year I tend to reach for poetry, short fiction and cookbooks. I can't concentrate enough for a novel, but I can sink into a poem or two, a short story and be inspired by a beautiful cookbook.
This collection is a powerful one. MacPherson really sinks the reader into the female body and experience. I connected to this collection immediately.

Reckless, Poems by Andrea MacPherson is an impactful collection of poetry, which examines the complexities of the female identity. This book was gifted to me by @bookhugpress when I asked for some poetry books to hype.
One of the standout poems called ‘reproductions, or, before the pill’ was a gut punch. It was a strong. Each title of the parts of this poem are named after different birth control methods for example, part I ‘pessary, extended nursings, withdrawal’, evoked a real sense of panic, cloistering feeling. I thought it was a very successful poem in setting tone.
Midway I didn’t connect with the poems as much as I would’ve liked to have, however when the chapter ‘reckless’ came around in in the last 1/3 of the book, I marked almost every single poem from that point on as each had such resonance to them. I had tears, the kind of tears that you don’t realize are falling. So many lines that as a woman I can easily identify with. The author has a really great flow to her writing in this section which really exemplifies that.
I really appreciate getting the opportunity to read this. I’d love to see more poetry around my corner of Instagram in particular, poetry by women.
