I serve in a county which ranks as one of the highest per capita for dementia patients in the United States. I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count all of the saints with dementia that I currently serve or have laid to rest. I say that to preface my rather negative review. I found the theology and the ensuing practical advice to be questionable.
I am in firm agreement with the author’s insistence on prayer, presence, and pastoral case; however, his discussion of them was overly simplistic. He had a more in-depth discussion of ageism than the three P’s. I could go on, but it would be nitpicking at this point.
The best part of the book was the many recommended resources. Some I have read, others I will read.
Not bad, I think I would have benefited from a more physiological explanation of what is happening in the brain of someone living with dementia. Overall, a good reminder that people living with dementia are often going through the hardest time of their life, and as Christians we should be reminded to treated them with love and compassion at all times.
