What happens when a stick figure desperately wants their book to stay blank, but the reader just won't stop turning pages? Chaos! Words float, doodles appear, and plans backfire in this playful battle of wills between a very stubborn stick figure and YOU - the reader who simply refuses to stop reading. Will our grumpy stick figure learn to love storytelling, or will this book remain stubbornly blank? (Spoiler you're already reading it!)
Recommended for readers of all ages who never do what they're told - especially when told not to read something!
Thank you Ms Dalton. We loved it. Especially when you left to get chocolate. My six year old made me read it again right away. And frantically tried to turn the page for the story written “together” at the end. When I explained that was it, she put her hands on her hips and said, “she needs to write another book. I wanna know what happens when they write together.”
Then, she made her 10 y/o brother also read it and they had so much fun together.
A book filled with giggly moments and simple fun. Great for kids of all ages
This is Jamie Dalton's first children's book and I have to say the quality is right up there with B.J. Novak's, The Book With No Pictures. Stop Reading! is one of those rare jewels that creates a special moment with your child while you read the book together. This book not only encouraged our imagination and creativity but it brought that deep laughter out of our bellies. The children kept wanting me to read it over and over again. It brought smiles to their faces and lit up their eyes. Plus the message it tells is one of love.
Stop Reading! by Jamie Dalton is a delightful and playful book that breaks the fourth wall, much like the beloved Monster at the End of This Book. In this interactive story, the narrator humorously implores the reader to stop reading, creating an engaging and fun experience. The quirky tone and witty illustrations keep both kids and adults entertained as they navigate the unexpected twists in the plot. If you enjoyed Monster at the End of This Book, you’ll appreciate the charm and creativity of Stop Reading!, which offers a fresh and delightful take on interactive storytelling.
Stop Reading! had both of my girls giggling like crazy and trying to converse with the main stick person character. The kindergartener thought it was particularly hilarious that the character got bored from writing the story. Her official review is “This book neeeeeeds 5 stars because it’s amazing!” and I can’t argue with that. It was a very fun and silly read aloud. Definitely a great read for those with kids who enjoy books that ‘talk’ to them and break the fourth wall!
My 6 year old and I loved reading this book, he couldn't stop laughing he found it so funny and really enjoyed reading it.. so much in fact that we read it again! He wanting more at the end and when I told him that's the end he asked, can the author write more 😂 I love Jamie Dalton's writing, albeit I tend to read her adult/YA books but this is a great book for young children, it's simple but effective and it really engaged my son. Definitely a hit!
Yep, readers will keep reading! This is a quick, easy, upbeat story with an energetic stick figure that engages with the audience. I loved these sorts of books when I was a kid. Although the story is in black and white, the visual interest comes from the different fonts and sometimes undulating words on the page. You can tell the author enjoyed writing this silly story with her own kiddo. I recommend getting a copy for any 4-6 year old, plus a copy for your own children's library.
This was such a cute fun book. I read the ebook with my son who is 4 yo & asd/adhd and he absolutely LOVED it. each page is quick and held his attention, there were even a couple moments he laughed out loud. Planning to recommend it to his class teacher for the other kids to enjoy also!
Most of my reviews come from just me, but this one is from me and my kiddo!
I sat with my daughter and had her read this to me tonight. It was such a cute and fun story! She loved how the character interacted with the reader. She really liked the illustrations and the font changed at the end too!
I read this with my 11yo son and he laughed out loud! He loves these types of books and to be "bossed" by the character and then defy their orders. Recommend for any sassy kids who love to read.
This book was so dang cute! My 5 year old laughed and interacted with it the entire time I read to him. He giggled like crazy, and kept answering the stick figures questions. When I asked what he thought about the book he said "It was really good and funny! It made me laugh a lot!"
So cute, fun, and entertaining for kids and adults! I read it with my kids and we all laughed. It's one they'll beg to read over and over until the words are memorized! You've gotta check this out.
