Somewhat Disappointing

I absolutely hated the start, and I’m unsure why. There was something missing, that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

The romance was also a too-slow build up for me, with all the “will they, won’t they?”, which is known to annoy me somewhat. It just felt like they kept recircling around the same ideas, not asking the right questions, before finally deciding all was OK. Once they got to that point, the flow was better, until it came to the issue of Oliver...

Banjo is a fun character, and I would have liked to have seen him fleshed out a bit more. Hopefully we’ll get more of other familiars, including Howie, quite soon. They’re magically-bonded familiars, but what that actually means, apart from a tattoo (no spoilers), and whether there are actually any magical properties there outside of that, I’m not too sure right now.

And I was a little confused about how the magic works, but hopefully that will come along, too.

This doesn’t mean that I will just dump the series. But I will just see it all as an introduction, and hope that the next book finds me better. We are all different in our likes, after all!

Final rating: ★★★☆☆ – Sort of liked/OK

I really liked the Purple Oasis series, when the authors announced they would rework the series into the Purple Oak Oasis with a different setting (cozy fantasy instead of post-apocalyptic) I wasn't sure whether to be excited or wary. And I settled on a bit of both with more of the one or the other depending on the moment. I wasn't sure if it would change my opinion of the series and I was afraid the new series wouldn't be the same. On the other hand I love cozy fantasy as a genre and thought it would be a good fit for this series with it's hopeful and cozy tones. I also was a bit confused on how it would work with new books and reworked books in the series.

I decided to pick up this book, the new first book that wasn't in the previous version of the series and give it a try. I really wanted to like this book and hoped I would easily get into it with how much I liked this series already, but it didn't quite work like that. I enjoyed this book, but struggled a bit with the romance as well as the world building. And there was that weird feeling of it being the same series I know and like and different at the same time, not being quite right.

The Tea Witch's Promise is told in dual point of views of both Katie and Brew. Katie is a ward and has a dog familiar and Brew is a tea witch who works in the infirmary. Brew has loved Katie for a long time, but she only sees him as a good friend who flirts with everyone. Then there is the fact Brew is Katie's brother's best friend and both Brew and Katie are part of one of the four families that rule the town and they are discouraged to date someone from the other families.

I liked both character well enough, but had some troubles fully feeling their romance. Katie is totally oblivious to Brew's feelings and states multiple times how she could never see him as more than a friend and could never fall for him until she does and the change just felt a bit too sudden. Then there is this whole will-they/won't-they part where it isn't clear whether they will act on their feelings and I didn't really like that part. And then when they do get together their romance is quite sweet and I liked those scenes toward the end and could actually feel their romance.

There was also the plot line with the four families not liking it when they date that never got addressed. And the brother's best friend trope that got resolved very easily after all the mentions beforehand. The ending felt a bit rushed and I felt it was missing some wrap up, but maybe some of that will occur in future book? I also was confused at what Katie's job with the farm was exactly as al she did was patrol and I wasn't quite sure why. And I didn't quite udnerstand how it worked with these four families that are important and why they are and why they don't want them dating someone from the other families.

The unique magic system was one of the things I really liked from the old version of the series and I still appreciate that here. I did hope we would see some more of the magic and world building, but sadly that isn't the case yet. I know from the previous series a bit about how the shifters work that are now called wards (which I think fits better), but there is very little about it in this book. Katie mentions her magic, the tattoo as well as her bond with her familiar, but I have no clue how it works or what she can do with her magic. There is a bit about the tea magic, which I think is such an unique concept, but I still would've liked a bit more.

As the location changed from post-apocalyptic UK to a fantasy world I feel the series lost some of the logic behind it that doesn't quite work now. On the other hand I think the fantasy world does fit the tone of the series better than the post-apocalyptic setting. I struggled to get a feel for this fantasy world and kept trying to see it as it's own world, but it's at times too similar still and not similar enough to the old version. Without the apocalypse plot line and UK setting it doesn't quite make sense why this settlement with lots of tea witches doesn't grow their own tea yet. I also couldn't get a good feel for this world. I hope this will get better in future books and someone who hasn't read the old version of the series will probably have an easier time at this.

I did appreciate how this book has a lot of set up and mentions of what I know will be future couples. At times it felt a bit much as I already know where some of those threads will go and it just was very obvious when these hints occurred, but I think for someone starting the series here it will be great to get those little hints and introductions here already.

To summarize: This is the first book in the Purple Oak Oasis series, which is a reworked version of a previous series, but this is a new book in the series. I struggled a bit having read the previous version of this series and adjusting to the new setting and changes the authors have made in this one. I also didn't fully feel the romance with Katie not being interesting in Brew at first and I felt that changed quite quickly. There are some really sweet and fun scenes toward the end that I liked. The ending felt a bit rushed and didn't address some things. The magic and world building is quite unique and I like it, but I would've liked to see more of it as the magic stays very vague in regards to how it all works. I also struggled a bit to get a good feel for the new setting and I felt some plot lines like the town not growing tea didn't make as much sense with it not being set in post-apocalyptic UK and no good explanation given of why they didn't grow this yet. While I struggled a bit with this book there are still a lot of things I liked about it and I hope as I get further in the series it will be easier to settle into this new version of the series. I think there are some good set ups in this book for future books and I am looking forward to reading those.

The Tea Witch’s Promise was received as an ARC Review copy.

I want to start this review by saying it’s worth picking up if you like non-traditional magic systems and cozy tales.

When I opened the book for the first time, having never read any of either author’s works, I was a little surprised to see first person narration. While traditionally this isn't my cup of tea (pun intended), I actually found myself enjoying both protagonist’s perspectives throughout the story.

The magic systems described in the story are quite cool and interesting and I enjoyed this particular approach to fantasy as it felt refreshing and despite the somewhat political conflict happening in the background, quite low-stakes. Both characters, (Katie and Brew), are fun and gentle characters that carry the story and romantic plot well. The authors use the dual POV quite well, so that no voice (or plotline) gets stale too quickly and you find yourself breezing through the book almost without meaning too.

I would have liked to see a little bit more of the background conflicts, as a couple of bigger events were mentioned, but never really explored. I was hoping to see how those storylines would play out. However, according to the authors, the next entry to the series does focus on this, which I am excited to read, as well.

Any good tale is such that you find yourself absorbed in it the more you turn the pages. This is a lovely novel that’s worth a try if you want something interesting and light-hearted to read, as any good brew should be.

Thank you to Arizona Tape and Laura Greenwood.

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

Okay, this is a fun and creative world. Definitely a cozy fantasy setting but with all the fun politics that naturally come along with fantasy and magical creatures leaving together.

Our main LI comes from a family that manifest magic through tea and they all have names to reflect this. Sometimes to their dismay. They’re fun to hang around with and have very strong personalities. You never wonder where you stand.

Our main character Katie is fun. She doesn’t really have abilities like much of the group, at least not outwardly. That doesn’t stop her from having a dog familiar or interacting as readily with witches as with widows. There’s a self motivation and confidence to her that’s insanely attractive.

And as for the romance? It’s very much a natural, slow burn relationship. It builds with time and I adored the way Katie and Brew spoke to each other. So much character in their dialogue.

I’d gladly like to return to and explore more of this world.

From what I understand from the author’s note this is a reworking of the original Purple Oasis series. This time there’s no apocalypse that drives the series development. I kinda think that it made more sense before. I get why there’s all these splintered factions and separate groups banded together when they’re trying to survive the aftermath of the apocalypse but now I’m not sure I understand the background as to why people are splintered into these different communes. Also specifically to this book what’s the deal with the four families. When spoken of it’s dealt as an important topic but there’s not much more explanation other than they’re wealthy leaders. The romance between Brew and Katie is sweet, I loved Banjo and the funny interactions/ calamities with her brother and his familiar. I guess I just feel a bit confused on why the switch happened and what this new world is all about. I’m begging for more background. 3.5/5 stars.
I received an ARC from the author this review reflects my honest and sincere opinion.

This is book one of the Purple Oak Oasis series and the main characters are tea witch and healer Brew (Rooibos Brewster) and do g ward Katie (Kathryn) Fields. They are both from one of the founding four families of the Purple Oak Oasis and have been raised with certain expectations and with a duty to uphold the balance between them all and serve their village. Katie helps run the farm her family own and make sure any problems are fixed that the workers come across, so everything runs smoothly. Her and her dog familiar Banjo, make their usual patrol from the farmhouse to the Brewster Hall, where the tea witches live, then back again. He knows the route well and often runs ahead of her. She always ends up meeting her older brother Oliver on her patrol, in a prearranged meeting spot, exactly half way between their paths, to ensure a fair division of work. They’d become ever closer since their parents died and she worries about all the scratches on his arms from his familiar owl, Howie. Katie meets up with Brew after seeing her brother, and he is his usual charming self, and gets Brew to check on Oliver’s wounds, since he is a healer as well, but he shakes him off and tells him not to bother. Brew jokes with Oliver about meeting a cute girl who would love to see a real owl, but Oliver isn’t interested and when Brew turns his comments to Katie, Oliver reminds him not to mess with his sister.

Brew’s sister Jasmine tells the family of a suggested ward ceremony, to integrate all the new and younger wards into their community and getting their tattoos inked. It is something the four families will be key to organising and helping to fundraise for, and he says he will speak to Oliver about it and his mum tells him Katie is organising it, so now he has a good reason to go and talk to her. Brew liked Oliver as a friend, but he had always seen Katie as something different, something more and covered it up with his charm, since he had always been taught that he shouldn’t disturb the delicate balance between the four families. Nothing could happen between him and Katie, however much he wanted it to! Talk of the ward ceremony brings up how much the oasis has changed, with a large influx of people starting some fifteen years ago and the tensions between wards, those who think they are superior to those who haven’t yet been tattooed, due to the shortage of tattoo artists. A meeting of the community to discuss the ceremony and other news, brings the bad news of a rat infestation in the tea supplies, making their dwindling supplies ever more precious and in high demand for healing. They are awaiting a delivery from their usual trader, but prices have been going up all the time, so they are also trying to start growing tea plants themselves, but that isn’t going very well. A visiting dryad from Grower’s Cove may want to enter into an alliance with Purple Oak Oasis, especially with help to grow other produce and with their own tea plantation.

A night at the local tavern turns a it heated afterwards, as they share her shawl and each act a little out of the norm, with Katie finally starting to see Brew as the man he has become, not just the boy she grew up with. His drunken confession to her, seemingly not returned, has Brew worrying constantly in the days that follow. When he ends up healing Oliver again at the infirmary, he can’t help but talk about his feelings after Oliver admits he has feelings for someone he shouldn’t. When he tells him it’s Katie, he doesn’t automatically think it is his sister until Brew tells him it is. Brew tells him he tried for ages to stay away from her as he thought she wasn’t interested, but once it was clear she was, he couldn’t help himself. As Brew and Katie’s romance grows, they have to face the fact that sooner or later, one of these two couples is going to have to tell the heads of the four families, rather than continue to sneak around and try to hide their feelings for each other, from others in the village. Something none of them are really great at hiding, as well as they thought they were. They can see themselves having a family of their own one day and nothing is going to get in their way, so something is going to have to be sorted out sooner rather than later abut all the founding families not mixing malarky. Another budding romance between two former friends turned lovers, who face an obstacle or two in the way of true happiness.

This was a really quick read, I read the last page but thought I would have only been around 60-65% in!

I was waiting for a love connection (not just hook ups) and for everyone to find out and an actual story to develop...
I was also missing the lore and history of such a greatly unusual magic system. The author has created a wonderful system but we know nothing about any of it... there's no rules or background of any sort and the first chapter just confused me on all levels a book about tea and a character was name brew so that took some getting used to and just other random things like that.

The story was over with super quick, so perfect for anyone looking for that.
It was a really over simplified read too but with fade to black spice of 1 chilly so not ideal for younger generations but good as a older young adult read.

There was no drama or tension so it is a good cozy read. Also- a little will they won't they followed by insta love.

For me everything I have listed are reasons why I really did not like it and why I won't pick up the next one.

To simple, no history or lore, no actual relationship and no tension or drama, it felt like I was reading a high school project that some girls created a secret chapter for.

Banjo is a fun character, and I would have liked to have seen him be given more depth and detail in the story. but as with the lack of magic rules we have no clue whatsoever about gow ge came into her life, what he brings to the mix, what he can or can't do, why she has a tattoo of him or what else that tattoo is for/does or why/how anyone else has their Familiars and why some don't seem to get on right away. there's litterally no background or depth at all.

I was given this as an arc-thank you to the author. The review is my honest opinion left voluntarily.

If you’re craving a cozy fantasy romance that feels like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket with a cup of tea in hand, The Tea Witch’s Promise by Laura Greenwood and Arizona Tape is your perfect brew. This delightful opener to the Purple Oak Oasis series introduces us to Katie, a ward witch, and Brew, a tea witch who also happens to be her brother’s best friend. The magic system, centered on tea, is refreshingly original and utterly enchanting. Whether it’s brewing spells or stirring up romance, the authors strike a balance between lighthearted whimsy and deeper emotional undertones. Rating: 3.75/5

If you're looking for a whimsical escape, The Tea Witch's Promise is a delightful pick! This light and heartwarming story kept me hooked, making it the perfect one-day read. With its rustic, small-village charm and a fun magic system, it gives off major cozy vibes that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Brew is utterly charming, with a carefree demeanor that hides a deeper, more thoughtful side he only shows to Katie. Having known each other since childhood, their connection feels both natural and meaningful. Katie, on the other hand, didn’t resonate with me as strongly. Her sudden realization of her feelings for Brew felt a little rushed. That said, the two of them have great chemistry. Their moments together are sweet and heartwarming.

While I enjoyed the romance and the cozy atmosphere, I felt like the story ended too abruptly. There’s so much more potential to explore Katie and Brew’s relationship, as well as the sub-plots. I found myself wishing for more depth and time with these characters.

Overall, The Tea Witch's Promise is a lovely read, perfect for fans of short, sweet, and magical romances. Here’s hoping there’s more to come —I’d love to revisit in Katie and Brew’s story!

Tea – the global “cure-almost-all”
Steeped herbs and flowers aren’t only for witches and other healers; tea should be accessible by all for medicinal purposes as well as for the enjoyment of the pleasant aromas. The varieties alone are a recommendation in itself, let alone the pure delight in late afternoon while “spilling the tea” with close friends. Just wish that I gained some magic after drinking a cuppa!

Fave line:
‘Nothing better than a good pint or two. Maybe even three.’

While this community’s tale focuses mainly on its tea crop, I appreciate the bigger picture that the authors portray in this series. Even without a post-apocalyptic setting (which I DID enjoy, BTW), it’s still important for us to go back to some of our agricultural and other rustic practices such as growing the majority of our own foods, eating seasonally sourced produce, avoiding waste, bartering, etc. We’ll get to see more of this in the upcoming ‘The Tea Witch's Treaty’ as one of the secondary characters goes on a little adventure to another community to form an alliance.

May we all work with the land to improve our lot and of those around us.

THE TEA WITCH’S PROMISE by Laura Greenwood and Arizona Tape is the first installment in their new 'Purple Oak Oasis' series. This is another entertaining, light read from these two authors that work well together, creating great characters and wonderful worlds. The idea of witches having healing powers from drinking tea is a unique premise, making this a cute story concentrating more on romance than magic.

Brew and Katie are are both members of one of the four families dedicated to keeping their people and land healthy and safe. Brew had always been told that the four power families are not to intermingle. The trouble is, he's always been in love with Katie. Too bad Katie's brother Owen and Brew are best friends, putting Brew and Katie frequently together.

I recommend this unique, and interesting cozy fantasy those enjoying cozy paranormal romances.

I really wanted to like this story, but it unfortunately suffers from a severe case of clunky writing. The reader is just TOLD (often about the same thing multiple times) everything that happens instead of showed. Characters have info dumping conversations about things that they should already know having lived in this village all their life. The lack of world building combined with a contemporary tone made it hard to grasp and visualize what this world looked like.

There's also so much contradiction - it's cold but they throw off their clothes without problem, she's surprised to see him although she expected him to be there, she's very dedicated to her community and allegedly takes her duties seriously but zones out during every village meeting (that is exclusive to four families for some reason. No democracy in this cozy town!) and the list goes on and on.

A forbidden love.

Katie is a dog ward holder at Purple Oak Oasis. Brew is a tea witch and her brother’s best friend for over eighteen years. They are members of two of the four families in charge of Purple Oak. The balance between the families must be maintained so any relationship that crosses those boundaries is discouraged, but the heart knows what the heart wants.

This is a sweet friends-to-lovers paranormal romance. Brew and Katie make a good couple. The story lays the foundation for several secondary characters to feature in their own romances later in the series. I received a free copy of this book but my review is honest and voluntary.

I received this book as an Arc. I rate it 3.75 stars

The Tea Witch’s Promise is a lighthearted, fun & cozy read. If you like small town romances then I recommend you read this book.

The two main characters Katie and Brew start out as friends who don’t want to admit their feelings for one another because they worry about what their families would say.

I found the magical aspect of this book very whimsical but I would have liked to explore more of each of the magical abilities that were mentioned in the book. I felt like there was something missing.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes warm, small town, friends to lovers romance.

back to the earlier days in the Purple Oasis, before connections with the Dryads gave the tea and ward families more options.

Friends, family and romance are more complex than before the many deaths.

The grower families face challenges in different ways, as several have lost family members, and resources and balances are not as they once were.

Friendships and romances are tested and forged as new paths and alliances are made and broken.

Friendships facing challenges in romance is mostly sweet, absent parents who passed .

Sweet and intense early beginnings, as the Oasis develops.

Touching, and mostly hopeful.

This was a quick, breezy little romance story with a magical twist. Katie and her brother are tasked with keeping the fence around their town safe, and they are both wards with familiars, Katie's is a border collie and Owen's is an owl. Owen is working on training his owl, but this often results in an armful of scratches, leading them to the Infirmary where his best friend, Brew, works. A sweet relationship between Brew, a tea witch, and Katie develops. It was a cute story, but a lot heavier on the romance than the magic.

I absolutely loved this book, it gave me cosy vibes and I loved everything about it. The characters were great, I really liked Brew, his energy and his charisma with everyone. Getting to know Katie and her brother Oliver was great too. I really liked Kate, I liked how her character developed. The writing in this novel is great, it pulled me into the story and I was so invested in the will they/won't they aspect. The cosy feels of this story just hooked me and the romance was so sweet. I really look forward to reading more from this series.

This is a lightly spicy entertaining read. The magical system is unique but I feel like it could be explained a bit better. It's around 100 pages and there's only so much you can do in that amount of time so perhaps the upcoming books in the series will include more world building.

I love that Brew and Katie have secretly pined after the other for years. For some reason it is forbidden for them to be together because they're part of the founding families. I enjoyed the friendship and sibling bonds, the banter and teasing. I'm looking forward to reading more of these stories.

This is a short little romance set in a small town where four different witch families are in charge of keeping everyone safe.
Kate is part of the warding family of witches with a bonded familiar border collie, she helps keep the town safe. Brew is a healer, who uses teas to augment his powers.
Being from the power families they are not supposed to be together, besides the fact that Brew’s best friend is Kate’s brother.
This is a sweet little romance wit some interesting characters and humour. Easy reading.
Nice break from my usual reads.

One of the reasons I like this author duo is because I always know exactly what I’m getting, and I really need that sometimes. This is a series starter, and it’s a romantic one. I loved how sweet and tender the “courtship” of Katie and Brew is, and I loved how Katie almost spilled the beans to her brother. This is a cute book, and I’m looking forward to reading the rest. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

This is the first story in the Purple Oak series that introduces the characters. And a fun way to do this is a budding friend to dating romance in a clean and cute story. I had me giggling as these two friends figure out they they want to date. And the other characters in the story add to all the fun and cuteness. Add some light tension and the some light world building too and hints of what might be coming in the series.

This was a cute, fast, fun, paranormal read surrounding a tea witch named Brew and a ward named Katie! I absolutely loved Brew. He's this big goofball flirt with a huge heart and eyes for only one woman. That woman remains totally oblivious their growing up years. She has such a kind heart also and their banter is great! If only she wasn't so clueless!! This book is such a cute twist on paranormal romance for me. It was nice and light and fun. I adored it!

The tea witches promise is a sweet light and airy romance. Full cozy vibes set is a small magical village filled whimsical charm.

The balance between the families must be maintained tea witches with tea witches wards with wards etc but the heart knows what the heart wants and you can’t help when it’s calling you to love your best friends sister.

The story just ended very abruptly had it gave us a bit more i probably would have rated it higher.

Thank you, Laura Greenwood & Arizona Tape, for the chance to read and review your book!

This is a super cute and cozy friends-to-lovers romance with a fun magic system. Reading this book was exactly like curling up with a Hallmark movie; the perfect comfy, cozy, warm book for when you're wanting something short and sweet to read.

Absolutely adorable. I’ve always gravitated to healer characters, and the idea of tea witches is awesome. So to have the tea magic be the healer’s power is so cool. The banter between Katie and Brew was delightful and a boisterous doggy familiar to boot. Everything about this book was sweet and warm and lovely. I cannot wait to return to this world in the next books!

Book 1 of the Purple Oak Oasis series features witches, dryads (a reference to them at least) and wards (they have familiars). Tea Witch's Promise has cozy fantasy romance vibes, fairly light reading. This is a MF story, minimal spice but a nice introduction to several characters and the families of Purple Oak.
